Chapter 140: Chapter 140: The Day Before Departure

The anime premiered on a warm evening in early autumn, nearly a year to the week since the production committee’s first email had arrived, and Haruki stood outside the theater entrance in a suit that still felt slightly unfamiliar on him, watching a crowd gather that he still couldn’t quite believe existed because of something he’d started drawing alone in a small apartment.

”You look like you’re about to be sick,” Takeda observed, appearing beside him with characteristic lack of tact.

”I might be.”

”Don’t. You’ll ruin the suit. Rika will never forgive you.” Takeda clapped him on the shoulder. ”Also, there are cameras. Try to look like a person who’s happy instead of a person having a medical event.”

Haruki took a steadying breath and forced his shoulders to relax, scanning the crowd gathering outside the theater. Fans, some holding printed art, a few in costumes he recognized immediately — Ren’s jacket, Miyu’s distinctive scarf, Shiori’s Bureau uniform rendered with startling accuracy. He’d seen fan art online for over a year now, but something about seeing people physically embody the characters, standing in a real crowd on a real evening, hit differently than any screenshot ever had.

”There he is.” Sora’s voice cut through the noise, and Haruki turned to find the entire coalition approaching together — Sora and Rika, still bickering good-naturedly about something; Aoi, uncharacteristically dressed up and looking deeply uncomfortable about it; Kenji, unbothered as always; Nanami, elegant and composed in a way that made Haruki feel even more aware of his own nervous energy; Arata, grinning broadly, freedom still visible on him even months after Horizon’s grip had finally released.

”You survived the red carpet portion,” Arata said, embracing him briefly. ”That’s the hardest part. Everything after this is just watching something beautiful happen.”

”I haven’t done the red carpet portion yet.”

”Then you’re about to survive it. I have faith.”

Mizuno and Suzune arrived next, both dressed more formally than Haruki had ever seen them, both looking simultaneously proud and faintly disbelieving, the specific expression of people who’d spent a chaotic year helping build toward exactly this moment and still couldn’t quite process having arrived.

”The reviews are already coming in,” Suzune said, phone in hand as always. ”Early screening audiences loved it. The archive arc sequence apparently made three separate critics cry.”

”That’s either wonderful or deeply concerning.”

”Wonderful,” Mizuno confirmed. ”Trust me. I’ve read enough of these reviews over the years to know the difference.”

Kuroda and Nakamura arrived together, an easy camaraderie between them now that hadn’t existed a year earlier, two men who’d spent over a decade carrying separate versions of the same unfinished fight, finally standing shoulder to shoulder without secrets weighing down the space between them.

”The Lantern Project has sixty-three members now,” Nakamura said, by way of greeting. ”We onboarded three more this week alone.”

”You couldn’t have led with congratulations?” Haruki asked, laughing.

”I’m leading with the thing that actually matters long-term,” Nakamura said, though his smile suggested he understood the joke perfectly well. ”Congratulations too, obviously. Both things can be true.”

Then, through the crowd, Haruki spotted her — Yui, having taken the train up from Osaka specifically for tonight, wearing a dress he hadn’t seen before, looking radiant in the theater’s warm entrance lighting. She caught his eye and smiled, making her way over through the gathered crowd with the same steady confidence she brought to everything.

”You look terrified,” she said, reaching him.

”I am terrified.”

”Good. That means it matters.” She took his hand, squeezing once. ”For what it’s worth, I already watched the preview clips they released last week. It’s beautiful, Haruki. They didn’t compromise anything you asked them not to compromise.”

Something in his chest loosened at that, relief threading through the nervous anticipation that had been building all week. ”You watched it without me?”

”I wanted to make sure I could handle my emotions in private before doing it in public surrounded by cameras.” She smiled. ”I cried. A lot. I’m blaming you entirely for my mascara situation tonight.”

He laughed, pulling her into a brief hug, grounding himself in her presence the way he’d learned to over the past year whenever the noise around him threatened to become overwhelming.

The red carpet portion passed in a blur — photographers, brief interview questions he answered as honestly as he could manage given his nerves, a genuinely surreal moment when the voice actor playing Ren approached to shake his hand and tell him, with visible sincerity, how much the character’s journey had meant to him personally during recording.

Then, finally, the theater lights dimmed, and the opening sequence began.

Haruki sat between Yui and Mizuno, gripping Yui’s hand tightly as the animation unfolded across the massive screen — Ren standing outside the ruined city gate, exactly as Haruki had first drawn him over a year ago, except now moving, breathing, voiced by someone who’d clearly understood exactly what the character needed to carry. The Bureau’s manufactured destinies shimmered into visual existence in ways he’d only ever imagined on paper. Miyu’s fury in the corridor scene landed with a physical weight that made the entire theater go silent. The archive confrontation, faithfully preserved exactly as he’d insisted, drew the exact reaction from the audience that he’d hoped for since the day he’d first drawn it — not cheering, but a heavy, thoughtful silence, the specific quiet of people genuinely moved rather than merely entertained.

When Ren finally delivered his line to the Bureau director — I don’t need you to understand why what you did was wrong. I need you to stop doing it — Haruki felt Yui’s grip on his hand tighten, and beside him, he heard Mizuno’s breath catch slightly, unusual enough from her that he glanced over to find her watching the screen with an expression of quiet, complete satisfaction.

The credits rolled to thunderous applause, the entire theater rising to its feet, and Haruki sat for a moment longer than everyone else, simply absorbing the sound of it, the reality of it, the sheer improbable distance between a boy standing outside a school gate wondering if he had any future worth chasing and this — an entire theater full of strangers, moved by something he’d built, one difficult, honest Chapter at a time.

Yui pulled him up eventually, laughing at his dazed expression, and the coalition swept him into a celebration that lasted well past midnight — laughter, toasts, Sora attempting and failing to give an eloquent speech, Aoi delivering an unexpectedly moving one instead, Arata crying openly and unashamedly, Kuroda and Nakamura sharing a quiet, private toast of their own near the edge of the room that Haruki chose not to interrupt.

Near the end of the night, standing outside the theater with Yui’s hand in his, the city glowing warm and alive around them, Haruki looked back at the theater marquee one final time, his name and the show’s title glowing in lights above the entrance.

”We did it,” Yui said softly, following his gaze.

”We did,” he agreed. ”All of us. Every single person who refused to let this fail the way it almost did, more than once.”

She squeezed his hand. ”What happens now?”

Haruki considered the question, thinking of Chapter Forty-Three still waiting on his desk, of the Lantern Project’s steady, ongoing work, of a life split between two cities that had somehow, against every obstacle placed in front of it, worked out into something worth protecting.

”Now,” he said, smiling, ”we keep going. One honest page at a time.”

It wasn’t an ending, not really. But standing there in the warm autumn night, surrounded by everyone who’d helped him reach this moment, it felt, for the first time in longer than he could easily remember, exactly like enough.
