Chapter 102: Chapter 102: The First Real Cost

The problem with public narratives was that they didn’t care about the truth.

Only momentum.

---

Three days after the Tachibana Media announcement, the discussion still hadn’t died.

---

It grew.

---

Slowly.

---

Steadily.

---

Annoyingly.

---

Haruki tried ignoring it.

---

The internet responded by becoming louder.

---

A predictable outcome.

---

At 8:14 AM, he opened a forum thread by mistake.

---

Actually, not by mistake.

---

Curiosity.

---

The more respectable cousin of stupidity.

---

The thread title appeared immediately.

---

Did Threadless Gate Become Industry-Friendly?

---

Hundreds of comments.

Thousands of views.

---

Haruki closed it.

---

Opened it again.

---

Read three comments.

---

Regretted everything.

---

The criticism wasn’t even unfair.

---

That was the problem.

---

Some readers believed the contract choice proved he was becoming corporate.

---

Others argued success changed him.

---

A few defended him.

---

Many speculated.

---

Nobody actually knew anything.

---

That never stopped anyone before.

---

His phone rang.

---

Takeda.

---

”Stop reading comments.”

---

Haruki froze.

---

”You can’t know I’m reading comments.”

---

”You’ve been online for forty minutes.”

---

A pause.

---

”Your productivity graph probably looks like a dying animal.”

---

Haruki hated that description.

---

Mostly because it sounded accurate.

---

The call ended after Takeda threatened to physically confiscate his laptop.

---

A friendship built on trust and blackmail.

---

Healthy.

---

Very healthy.

---

At noon, the consequences finally became tangible.

---

Chapter Twenty-Five released.

---

The original version.

---

Not the compromised version.

---

Not the popular version.

---

The difficult version.

---

Haruki uploaded it anyway.

---

Then waited.

---

Waiting remained one of humanity’s worst inventions.

---

The first reactions appeared twenty minutes later.

---

Confusion.

---

Then disagreement.

---

Then arguments.

---

The readership immediately split again.

---

Some praised the slower emotional progression.

---

Others hated it.

---

Passionately.

---

The comment section became a battlefield.

---

A familiar battlefield.

---

An exhausting battlefield.

---

The numbers updated.

---

Refresh.

---

Refresh.

---

Refresh.

---

Then Haruki noticed something.

---

The retention graph dropped.

---

Not catastrophically.

---

Noticeably.

---

Enough to hurt.

---

The feeling arrived instantly.

---

Not surprise.

---

Loss.

---

Because this time the cost attached itself directly to a choice.

---

He chose integrity.

---

Integrity chose lower numbers.

---

No inspirational music played.

---

No narrator rewarded him.

---

Just data.

---

Cold.

---

Honest.

---

The system appeared.

---

Workflow Analysis

Current Performance:

Reduced

---

Reader Retention:

Lower

---

Narrative Consistency:

Improved

---

Long-Term Story Health:

Improved

---

Short-Term Growth:

Reduced

---

Haruki stared.

---

The contradiction sat there openly.

---

No tricks.

No hidden lesson.

---

A tradeoff.

---

An actual tradeoff.

---

For the first time, the system didn’t tell him what to do.

---

It simply showed the price.

---

That felt worse.

---

Much worse.

---

At four o’clock, Mizuno arrived at his apartment.

---

Unannounced.

---

Again.

---

Haruki suspected editors enjoyed appearing at inconvenient moments.

---

The profession attracted them.

---

Mizuno entered.

Looked at the analytics.

Looked at Haruki.

---

Then:

---

”Good.”

---

Of course.

---

The word returned.

---

Haruki pointed at the graph.

---

”The numbers dropped.”

---

”Yes.”

---

”You aren’t worried?”

---

Mizuno shrugged.

---

”Are you?”

---

The answer should have been obvious.

---

Instead, Haruki hesitated.

---

Because he was worried.

---

But not as much as expected.

---

The realization unsettled him.

---

Mizuno noticed.

---

Naturally.

---

Then she pointed toward the screen.

---

”Which version lasts five years?”

---

Not:

Which version wins today?

---

Not:

Which version gets more comments?

---

Five years.

---

Again.

---

The same question Rika asked.

---

Different person.

Same direction.

---

Haruki looked at the Chapter.

---

Then at Ren.

---

Then at the consequences he’d restored.

---

The answer arrived quietly.

---

”This one.”

---

Mizuno nodded.

---

Conversation over.

---

Apparently editor conversations followed different laws of physics.

---

At six, another problem arrived.

---

An email.

---

From Tachibana Media.

---

Specifically:

Suzune Kurokawa.

---

Subject:

Urgent Clarification Required

---

That sounded dangerous.

---

Very dangerous.

---

Haruki opened it.

---

The message contained only three lines.

---

Someone inside Hoshikawa is asking questions about your leak.

---

Do not discuss this publicly.

---

Call me.

---

Haruki reread it.

---

Once.

---

Twice.

---

Three times.

---

The leak returned.

---

Of course it did.

---

Nothing stayed buried recently.

---

Outside, rain began falling across Tokyo.

---

Hard.

---

Fast.

---

The city blurred beyond the apartment window.

---

Haruki called Suzune immediately.

---

The line connected.

---

No greeting.

---

No small talk.

---

Straight to business.

---

”What’s happening?”

---

Silence.

---

Not hesitation.

---

Verification.

---

Then:

---

”I think someone wanted the leak to reach you.”

---

The statement landed heavily.

---

Because it matched something Sora suggested.

---

Weeks ago.

---

Someone trying to influence Haruki.

---

Not publishers.

---

Haruki.

---

The pieces shifted slightly.

---

Not enough to reveal the picture.

---

Enough to reveal the frame.

---

Suzune continued.

---

”We don’t know who.”

---

A pause.

---

”But somebody expected you to see it.”

---

Another.

---

”And I don’t think the contract war is the real reason.”

---

The rain intensified.

---

Water streaked down the glass.

Traffic lights reflected red and gold below.

---

Ghost Project flashed briefly through Haruki’s mind.

---

Then disappeared.

---

Not today.

---

The mystery remained background.

---

Exactly where it belonged.

---

Suzune ended the call shortly afterward.

---

Leaving more questions behind than answers.

---

A familiar industry habit.

---

Later that night, Haruki sat before Chapter Twenty-Six.

---

The analytics still hurt.

The comments still argued.

The leak still existed.

---

The consequences remained alive.

---

Good.

---

They were supposed to.

---

For once, the story didn’t heal immediately.

---

For once, the damage stayed.

---

And somewhere between lower numbers and better storytelling, Haruki finally paid the first real price for becoming the kind of creator he wanted to be.

---

Not enough.

---

Not yet.

---

But enough to understand that the bill had finally arrived.
