Chapter 142: Chapter 142: The Ring in the Drawer

Haruki had been carrying the ring for three weeks, and it had already survived one near-catastrophe involving a washing machine before he’d even worked up the nerve to actually use it.

He kept it in the bottom drawer of his desk, wrapped inside an old sock for reasons he couldn’t fully justify except that it felt marginally less terrifying than leaving it exposed in a box where he might accidentally glance at it mid-panic attack. Twice now he’d opened the drawer specifically to check it was still there, as though rings were prone to spontaneously disappearing out of sheer disapproval of his indecision.

”You’re doing the thing again,” Suzune said, not looking up from her laptop during their Tuesday coalition meeting.

”What thing?”

”The staring-into-the-middle-distance-while-thinking-about-something-terrifying thing. You’ve been doing it for three weeks.” She finally looked up, expression sharp with the particular perceptiveness that made her genuinely excellent at her job and occasionally exhausting to sit across a table from. ”Is it about the contract renegotiation, or something else?”

”Something else.”

”Is it good something else or bad something else?”

Haruki considered the question. ”Terrifying something else. Possibly good. I genuinely don’t know yet, which is the terrifying part.”

Suzune studied him for a long moment, then closed her laptop entirely, a rare gesture that meant she’d decided whatever conversation was about to happen mattered more than whatever spreadsheet she’d been reviewing. ”Is this about Yui?”

He didn’t answer immediately, which apparently answered the question thoroughly enough on its own. Suzune’s expression shifted into something warmer, less professional.

”Haruki. Just ask her.”

”It’s not that simple.”

”It’s exactly that simple. You’re the one making it complicated.” She leaned forward. ”You spent an entire year learning that honesty matters more than perfect timing. Apply the lesson.”

He knew she was right, the way he’d known Mizuno was right about a dozen different things over the past two years, the way Kuroda’s cryptic warnings had always eventually resolved into obvious truths once enough time passed to see them clearly. Knowing something intellectually and actually acting on it under the specific pressure of this particular decision remained, apparently, two entirely different challenges.

That evening, Yui called for their regular video check-in, and Haruki found himself unable to focus properly on the conversation, distracted by the ring sitting in his desk drawer like a small, patient bomb waiting for him to finally defuse it correctly.

”You’re distracted,” Yui observed, midway through describing a complicated situation at the community center involving a donated piano and considerably more logistics than anyone had anticipated. ”What’s going on?”

”Nothing. Just tired.”

She studied him through the screen with the particular narrow-eyed scrutiny that meant she wasn’t buying the deflection at all. ”You’re a terrible liar. You always have been. It’s honestly one of your more endearing qualities most of the time, but right now it’s just making me worried.”

He considered deflecting further, then remembered Suzune’s blunt advice from earlier, remembered an entire year of learning that avoidance never actually solved anything, only delayed the eventual reckoning while making it more complicated in the meantime.

”I want to see you this weekend,” he said instead. ”In person. Not a video call.”

”That’s not unusual. I was already planning to visit next week anyway.”

”This weekend,” he repeated. ”Specifically. It’s important.”

Something in his tone must have carried more weight than he intended, because her expression shifted, curiosity and something more careful moving across her face. ”Haruki, is everything okay?”

”Everything’s fine. Better than fine, actually. I just need to see you, properly, this weekend specifically.”

She agreed, though he could tell the mystery bothered her slightly for the rest of the call, and after they hung up, Haruki sat staring at his desk drawer for a long time, the sock-wrapped ring inside feeling considerably heavier than its actual weight should have allowed.

The weekend arrived faster than he expected and slower than he wanted simultaneously, a contradiction that made no logical sense and felt entirely accurate to his emotional state regardless. Yui arrived Saturday afternoon, and they spent the day doing ordinary things — grocery shopping, cooking dinner together, watching a movie neither of them fully paid attention to — the entire day carrying an undertone of anticipation that Haruki suspected she’d noticed even if she hadn’t directly commented on it.

That evening, he took her to the small riverside path where she’d first confessed, nearly two years earlier now, the same stretch of water reflecting a different season’s light, autumn leaves scattered across the same benches where they’d once sat working through an entirely different kind of uncertain future.

”This feels significant,” Yui said, as they walked, her voice carefully light in a way that suggested she was working hard to stay calm.

”It is.”

She stopped walking. He stopped beside her, and for a long moment neither of them spoke, the river continuing its steady, indifferent flow beside them exactly the way it had two years earlier, entirely unbothered by whatever significant human moments happened along its banks.

”Yui,” he said, and his voice came out steadier than he expected, all the accumulated fear of the past three weeks somehow settling into something calm and certain now that the actual moment had arrived. ”Two years ago, right here, you told me you loved me before I was brave enough to say it first. You’ve spent this entire relationship being braver than me, more honest than me, more certain than me, at almost every turn that mattered.”

”Haruki—”

”Let me finish. I’m going to lose my nerve if I don’t get through this now.” He managed a small, nervous laugh. ”I’ve spent two years learning, slowly and painfully, that the honest choice matters more than the safe one. That waiting for perfect certainty just means never actually choosing anything at all. And I don’t want to wait anymore. Not for this.”

He knelt down, retrieving the small box from his jacket pocket, and Yui’s hands flew to her mouth, her eyes already bright with tears in the fading evening light.

”Marry me,” he said simply. ”Not because it’s the safe choice, or the convenient one, or even necessarily the easy one given the two cities and the schedules and everything else we’d still need to figure out. Because it’s the honest one. Because I don’t want to keep building a life that runs parallel to yours. I want to build one that’s actually, completely shared.”

For a long moment, Yui said nothing at all, tears falling freely now, her hands still pressed against her mouth. Then she laughed, the sound bright and disbelieving and utterly joyful all at once, and dropped to her knees in front of him, pulling him into a fierce hug before he’d even fully processed that she hadn’t actually answered yet.

”Yes,” she said, muffled against his shoulder. ”Yes, obviously yes, you enormous idiot, yes.”

Relief and joy crashed through him simultaneously, and he laughed too, holding her tightly as the last of the evening light faded over the river, two years of careful, honest, hard-won growth finally arriving at exactly this moment — not a fairy tale ending, not a dramatic resolution to every remaining uncertainty in their lives, but something better.

A beginning, chosen deliberately, by two people who’d already proven, repeatedly, that they knew exactly how to build something worth keeping.
