Chapter 135: Chapter 135: The Article Goes Live

Chapter Thirty-Five released on a Sunday morning, and Haruki knew, the moment he finished the final page the night before, that it would be the one readers remembered longest.

The Bureau’s director sat across from Ren in a scene that had taken three full days to get right — not because the art was difficult, but because the emotional weight refused to settle into place until Haruki stopped trying to make it satisfying and let it simply be true. The director didn’t confess dramatically. He didn’t break down or beg forgiveness. He simply stated, flatly, in the careful language of someone who’d spent decades believing his own justifications, that the Bureau’s manufactured destinies had been necessary to maintain social order, that chaos without controlled outcomes would have been worse for everyone, that Ren and the others simply didn’t understand the full picture.

Ren didn’t argue with him. That was the choice that had taken three days to arrive at — not a righteous speech, not a triumphant rebuttal, just Ren looking at the director for a long, silent panel and finally saying, quietly, ”I don’t need you to understand why what you did was wrong. I need you to stop doing it.”

The Chapter ended there, unresolved in the way that actually mattered, the Bureau’s fate left uncertain, Ren’s future left uncertain, nothing wrapped in a bow. Haruki uploaded it at 8:00 AM and, for the first time in the manga’s entire run, didn’t check the analytics until that evening.

When he finally did, the numbers told him everything the delay had protected him from panicking about. The Chapter had broken every previous engagement record for Threadless Gate, not through controversy this time, not through any manufactured drama, but through readers discussing, at length and with real passion, exactly the thing the story had always been trying to say. Comments filled pages arguing about complicity, about institutional justification, about what it actually meant to refuse an apology you hadn’t been offered and demand change instead.

His phone rang. Mizuno, predictably, though her voice carried none of the usual clipped efficiency.

”You finally did it,” she said.

”Did what?”

”Made a Chapter that’s entirely, completely yours. No compromise, no audience-chasing, no fear underneath it. Just the story you actually wanted to tell.” A pause, and he could hear something that might have been pride in her voice, carefully controlled but unmistakably present. ”This is the Chapter Chapter Twenty-Two should have been building toward all along, if you hadn’t gotten distracted by everything else that happened this year.”

He sat with that for a moment, looking out his apartment window at Tokyo’s steady autumn light. ”Distracted feels like an understatement.”

”An enormous understatement,” she agreed, and he could hear the smile in it now. ”But you got here anyway. That’s what matters.”

That afternoon, he met the full coalition — no longer scattered across phone calls and emergency meetings, but gathered together for the first genuinely celebratory occasion since this whole ordeal began, at a small restaurant Sora had insisted on booking entirely, refusing to let anyone see the bill.

Arata arrived first, looking lighter than Haruki had seen him in weeks, the specific unburdened posture of someone who’d recently had an enormous weight lifted from his shoulders. He’d already signed a new, modest representation agreement with a smaller, independent management firm — one Watanabe had personally vetted, clause by clause, before allowing him anywhere near a pen.

”How does freedom feel?” Haruki asked, as Arata settled into the seat beside him.

”Terrifying,” Arata admitted, laughing. ”I spent three months assuming I’d never get out. Now I have to figure out who I actually am as a creator without a five-year leash defining my choices for me.” He shrugged. ”I’m having lunch with Aoi next week to talk about it. He offered, unprompted, which honestly worried me more than the lawsuit did.”

”He’s oddly generous once you get past the intimidating exterior.”

”I’ve noticed. It’s deeply unsettling.”

Sora arrived next, Rika trailing behind him, the two of them mid-argument about something that had clearly started before they’d even entered the restaurant and showed no signs of concluding soon.

”He wants to name the new organization something ridiculous,” Rika announced, sitting down with the exhausted air of someone who’d been managing her brother’s whims for their entire shared lives.

”It’s not ridiculous,” Sora protested. ”’Lantern Project’ has genuine symbolic resonance. Light in dark places. Guidance for lost creators.”

”It sounds like a scented candle brand.”

”You have no vision.”

”I have a functioning sense of professional dignity, which is different.”

Haruki laughed, the sound easy and unguarded in a way it hadn’t been in months, watching the two of them continue bickering as Kenji arrived, unbothered as ever, immediately inserting himself into the naming debate with a suggestion so deadpan — ”Creator Support Initiative Number Two, since apparently the first one already used the good name” — that even Rika broke into genuine laughter.

Nanami arrived shortly after, sliding into the seat across from Haruki with the particular sharp-eyed satisfaction of someone who’d followed the entire saga closely and was pleased with how it had resolved. ”I read Chapter Thirty-Five three times already,” she said, without preamble. ”Miyu’s arc finally paid off completely. I’m almost jealous.”

”You could write something like it,” Haruki offered.

”I write something entirely different, and it’s better for being different.” She said it without arrogance, simple fact rather than boast. ”But I appreciate the compliment disguised as encouragement.”

The table filled gradually, laughter and conversation overlapping in that specific comfortable chaos of people who’d been through something difficult together and come out the other side still willing to sit in the same room. Even Takeda showed up eventually, uninvited as always, immediately commandeering a chair and half of Haruki’s plate without asking permission for either.

”You’re famous now,” Takeda announced, mouth full. ”Actually famous. Not manga famous. Regular famous. My mother saw you on the news.”

”That’s deeply concerning.”

”She said you looked tired but handsome, which I’m relaying exactly as she said it because I refuse to filter my mother’s opinions for your comfort.”

Haruki groaned, and the table laughed, and for a while the conversation simply flowed — easy, warm, entirely unburdened by lawsuits or contracts or anonymous callers or any of the machinery that had consumed the last several months of his life.

Near the end of the meal, Nakamura arrived, quietly, almost apologetically, standing near the entrance for a moment before Haruki waved him over. The table’s energy shifted slightly, not unwelcoming, just recalibrating around someone whose history most of them were still learning to fully understand.

”You’re welcome here,” Haruki said simply, gesturing to an empty chair.

Nakamura sat, visibly relieved by the lack of ceremony. ”I wasn’t certain I would be.”

”You spent six years fighting for exactly this outcome,” Rika said, her voice carrying a warmth Haruki hadn’t expected given her father’s role in Ghost Project’s original collapse. ”That earns you a seat at any table I’m sitting at.”

The dinner continued for hours, gradually thinning as people drifted toward trains and evening plans, until eventually only Haruki, Kuroda, and Nakamura remained, the restaurant staff patiently tolerating their extended stay.

”What happens now?” Haruki asked, once the conversation had settled into something quieter, more reflective.

Kuroda considered the question seriously. ”We build slowly. Carefully. No secrecy this time — everything the new organization does happens in the open, with creators who choose to participate knowing exactly what they’re signing up for.” He glanced at Nakamura. ”And we don’t let any single person carry the weight of it alone. That’s the mistake that broke us the first time.”

Nakamura nodded, something like genuine peace settling over his tired features for the first time since Haruki had properly met him. ”I’d like that. I’ve spent six years being the only one who knew what I was actually doing. I’m ready to just be one part of something larger again.”

Haruki looked between them — two men who’d each spent over a decade carrying different versions of the same unfinished fight, finally sitting together without secrets separating them — and felt something settle into place that had been unsteady since the very beginning of this whole exhausting, transformative year.

His phone buzzed. Yui, checking in from Osaka, a photo attached of her standing outside her new office building, genuine pride visible even through the small screen. First official day tomorrow. Wish me luck.

You don’t need luck, he typed back. You’ve never needed it. You just do the work and it happens anyway.

That’s suspiciously kind of you.

I’ve been told I’m getting better at that.

You have, she wrote back, and he could feel the smile behind the words even through text. I’m proud of you. All of it. The lawsuit, the coalition, the Chapter. All of it.

He set the phone down and looked out at Tokyo’s evening lights, the city continuing its endless indifferent rhythm below, entirely unaware of how much had actually changed inside one small restaurant that evening. The lawsuit was over. The coalition had won. Ghost Project, broken for eleven years, had finally found its way back to something resembling life, built this time on foundations Haruki suspected might actually hold.

But none of that, he realized, sitting there with Kuroda and Nakamura in comfortable, unhurried silence, was actually the thing he’d remember most clearly when he looked back on this year eventually.

He’d remember Chapter Thirty-Five. Ren, refusing to accept an apology nobody had offered, demanding change instead. Not because it was dramatic. Because it was honest, built from months of his own hard-won understanding about what actually mattered when everything else fell away — not vindication, not victory laps, not the satisfaction of watching an enemy squirm.

Just the quiet, stubborn insistence that things could actually be better, if enough people cared enough to keep showing up and doing the difficult, unglamorous work of making it so.

That, he thought, closing his eyes briefly against the warm restaurant light, had always been what the story was actually about.

Not Ren’s story.

His own.
