Entertainment Creator System: Building an Anime Empire

Chapter 138: Chapter 138: The Girl Who Didn’t Wait

The first production meeting happened three weeks later, in a conference room considerably more intimidating than any Haruki had sat in during the entire Horizon ordeal — not because of the people inside it, but because of what the room represented. Storyboards for other productions lined one wall, framed cels from finished series decorated another, and somewhere down the hall, he could hear the faint, distinctive sound of an actual animation studio actually animating something.

He arrived with Rika, Mizuno, and, at Watanabe’s firm insistence, an entertainment lawyer who specialized specifically in adaptation contracts, a necessary addition given everything Kuroda had warned him about weeks earlier. Animation deals carried their own particular traps, distinct from publishing ones — creative control clauses, script approval rights, character design authority, all of it negotiable in ways that could either protect a creator’s vision or quietly strip it away one seemingly reasonable concession at a time.

The production committee’s lead producer, a woman named Ishida with the calm, efficient energy of someone who’d shepherded a dozen successful adaptations through exactly this kind of nervous first meeting, greeted them warmly, gestured toward comfortable chairs, and got directly to business without wasting time on unnecessary pleasantries.

”We love the manga,” she began. ”Genuinely. Our director specifically requested this project after reading the archive arc twice in one sitting.”

Haruki felt a flush of pride he tried not to show too obviously. ”That’s good to hear.”

”It is.” Ishida smiled. ”It’s also why I want to be upfront about something before we go any further. Adaptations require compromise. Pacing changes for episode structure. Visual simplifications for animation budget. Sometimes narrative restructuring to fit a season count that publishing Chapters don’t naturally divide into.” She met his eyes directly. ”I’ve read about your history with compromise, Amamiya-san. I know it’s a sensitive subject.”

The directness caught him slightly off guard, though he appreciated it more than he expected to. ”You’ve done your research.”

”Thoroughly. I don’t like surprises in a working relationship, and I suspect neither do you, given recent events.” She opened a folder. ”So let’s discuss exactly where the lines are. What matters most to you creatively, in a way that shouldn’t be compromised no matter how convenient it might seem to a production schedule?”

Haruki considered the question seriously, aware of Rika and Mizuno both watching him carefully, aware that his answer here would shape the entire relationship going forward. He thought of Chapter Twenty-Four, of the wrong turn Ren had taken in the corridor, of Miyu’s anger that had refused to soften on command.

”Consequences,” he said finally. ”If a character makes a mistake, the story needs to actually cost them something. I’ve had readers, editors, other creators all tell me the same lesson in different ways over the past year, and I finally understand it well enough that I’m not willing to soften it again just because a happier version might test better with a preview audience.”

Ishida nodded slowly, writing something down. ”Noted. And specifically?”

”The archive arc’s ending stays exactly as written. Ren’s choice to delete his manufactured destiny, the alarm it triggers, the consequences that follow — none of that gets streamlined into something safer.” He paused. ”And the Bureau director’s final scene. He doesn’t get a redemption arc he hasn’t earned. Ren refusing to accept an apology nobody offered — that line stays intact, word for word, or the adaptation isn’t the story I actually wrote.”

The lawyer beside him made a small approving note. Ishida smiled, something genuine in it. ”Good. Those are exactly the kinds of specifics I needed to hear. Now I know precisely where the creative negotiation actually needs to happen, instead of guessing and accidentally stepping on something that mattered.”

The meeting continued for nearly three hours, covering script approval processes, character design review rights, episode count projections, and the delicate question of how much involvement Haruki would personally have during production — a balance Rika helped negotiate carefully, drawing on months of watching contract language for exactly the kind of buried complications that had nearly trapped Arata.

By the end, a framework existed that felt, remarkably, fair. Haruki would retain script approval on all major character and plot decisions. The studio retained creative freedom over visual direction, pacing adjustments necessary for episode structure, and voice casting, areas where Haruki readily admitted he had far less expertise than trained professionals. Neither side got everything. Both sides got what actually mattered most to them.

”This is good,” Watanabe’s colleague said afterward, reviewing his notes in the elevator down. ”Genuinely good. I’ve seen far worse frameworks from far more experienced creators.”

”I had good teachers,” Haruki said, thinking of Mizuno’s red pen, of Kuroda’s cryptic warnings, of an entire year spent learning the hard way exactly what needed protecting and what could reasonably bend.

That evening, he called Yui immediately, walking her through the entire meeting in careful detail, watching her expression shift from nervous anticipation to genuine relief as he described each negotiated point.

”That sounds like it actually went well,” she said, once he’d finished.

”It did. Genuinely did. No hidden clauses, no buried traps, no page thirty-two waiting to ambush me six months from now.” He leaned back against his couch, exhaustion and satisfaction mixing pleasantly. ”I kept waiting for the catch. There wasn’t one. Just a company that actually wanted to make something good and was willing to negotiate honestly to get there.”

”Maybe that’s just what a normal, functional business relationship feels like,” Yui offered. ”You’ve spent so long dealing with predatory contracts and public scandals that you forgot ordinary professionalism was even an option.”

The observation struck him as uncomfortably accurate. ”That’s a depressing thought.”

”It’s also probably true. Give yourself permission to just have a good professional experience without treating it as a red flag. Not every studio is Horizon. Not every meeting needs to end in a lawsuit.”

He laughed, some of the residual tension from months of vigilance finally easing at her gentle teasing. ”I’ll work on it.”

”You’ve been working on quite a few things this year,” she said, warmth clear in her voice even through the phone. ”You’re allowed to actually enjoy the results occasionally.”

After the call ended, Haruki sat for a while longer in the quiet of his apartment, looking out at Tokyo’s winter evening, snow still falling steadily outside, softening the city’s usual sharp edges into something gentler. The animation deal was moving forward, carefully, fairly, exactly the way he’d hoped it might without daring to fully expect it.

His phone buzzed one final time. A message from Ishida, sent directly rather than through official channels, brief and warm.

Looking forward to working together. Your story deserves the careful treatment we’re going to give it. Thank you for trusting us with it.

He read the message twice, something settling comfortably into place that had nothing to do with contracts or negotiations or hard-won protective clauses.

Trust. Given carefully, earned mutually, extended without the fear that had shadowed nearly every professional relationship he’d built this past year.

For the first time in longer than he could easily remember, Haruki closed his laptop that night without a single worry trailing behind him into sleep.

Just quiet, ordinary satisfaction.

It turned out, after everything, to be more than enough.
