The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Chapter 545: Chapter 308: Is This a Perfect Crime? (2)

”Moreover, after the murderer killed the three people, they intentionally organized the crime scene, wiping the blood clean. This was clearly not a crime committed on impulse.”

In an instant, the office fell into a brief silence.

Only the sound of the air conditioning unit’s operation echoed in the ears.

After a long while, Jiang An raised his head, his gaze resolute: ”We plan to focus our efforts during this period and launch an all-out assault on this case again.”

Captain Li Jian’s gaze swept back and forth over the three faces, his expression somewhat hesitant.

”This case isn’t normally difficult.”

”Don’t you need to contact other departments and bring in more people and resources?”

”Current criminal investigation technology is way more advanced than back then, we might be able to discover new clues.”

Jiang An waved his hand, his tone firm: ”No need, Captain.”

”So much time has passed with this case, many modern techniques might not be applicable.”

”For example, mobile positioning. Back in those days, most villagers used feature phones without positioning capabilities.”

”Network investigations are out of the question since the village didn’t even have network coverage.”

”I believe that the most traditional investigative methods might actually be the most effective.”

”We plan to start from on-site investigations and interviews, combined with the case files from that year, and sort out the case again.”

After pondering for a moment, Jiang An suddenly asked, ”By the way, is the crime scene still there?”

”Yes!” Captain Li Jian sighed.

”So many years have passed, the case remains unsolved, and due to the significance and unresolved nature of the case, the site has been kept in its original state after special approval.”

”Currently, that site is still under lockdown, with a security line set up around it, and designated personnel patrolling regularly. After all, it’s the site of a major murder case and must be strictly protected until the case is closed.”

Jiang An nodded softly after hearing this.

”What about the bodies?”

”The bodies have been stored in the funeral home!”

Captain Li Jian’s expression was somewhat helpless, ”The families were extremely dissatisfied with the progress of the investigation at the time and demanded that we find the culprit quickly.”

”But the case was just too difficult, and despite all the efforts of the previous two criminal investigation captains, they couldn’t break through, and could only continue cold-storing the bodies.”

”However, after such a long time, even in a low-temperature environment, the bodies have decomposed, turning into mummies.”

As an experienced forensic expert, Jiang An deeply understood the importance of bodies in solving cases.

Each wound, every tiny trace, could hide critical clues.

He nodded slightly: ”Even mummified remains have research value.”

”As long as the bodies are there, we have one more hope of cracking the case.”

Captain Li Jian patted Jiang An’s shoulder.

He said sincerely, ”Alright, since you’ve decided, I’ll fully support you.”

”But this case carries immense pressure; you must be mentally prepared.”

”If you encounter any difficulties, let me know anytime.”

”Thank you, Captain!”

The three said in unison.

”Let’s go, let’s eat in the canteen first. You need energy from a full meal to solve the case.”

Captain Li Jian said with a smile, trying to lighten the slightly heavy atmosphere.

The four of them arrived at the canteen during the peak dining time.

A long queue formed in front of the meal counter, with the aroma of food wafting in the air.

They finally found an empty table, sat down, and began eating from their lunch boxes.

”By the way, Jiang An!”

Captain Li Jian suddenly spoke, with a hint of a smile at the corner of his mouth, ”I’ve asked your sister-in-law to keep an eye for suitable young ladies at the hospital, to introduce to you.”

”You’re not getting any younger; you should consider personal matters.”

This sudden topic left the three who were eating momentarily stunned.

Jiang An’s chopsticks paused in mid-air.

Zhang Yean almost choked, while Wan widened his eyes in surprise.

They were just discussing a tense, thrilling murder case; how did the conversation suddenly shift to personal life issues?

Jiang An put down his chopsticks, smiled wryly, and said, ”Captain, I’m still young and want to focus on my work first.”

”Let’s talk about personal matters after solving the case.”

”Young people should establish a family first and then a career.”

Captain Li Jian picked some food with his chopsticks.

”You’re working here alone, with your parents not around; if you fall ill or encounter an emergency, there’s no one to take care of you, which is worrisome.”

”I have the organization, colleagues, Zhang Yean, and Wan. Everyone will take care of me.”

”They have their own lives too!” Captain Li Jian said earnestly.

”Being in a relationship and forming a family not only brings personal happiness but also facilitates work.”

”Us criminal police officers often engage with the darker sides of things due to the special nature of our work.”

”If you have a warm family by your side, it helps alleviate pressure and adjust your mindset.”

”Moreover, life experiences help in case analysis, enabling a better understanding of human nature and criminal motives.”

Zhang Yean joked from the side, ”Captain, you speak so profoundly, even tying falling in love to criminal investigation work.”

”This is no joke!”

Captain Li Jian said seriously, ”When I was young, I focused solely on work and missed many opportunities.”

”Now at 45, I come home every day to help my child with homework. If I had settled down earlier, I wouldn’t be so tired.”

Wan laughed, ”Weren’t we advocating for late marriage and late childbirth back then?”

”Advocacy is one thing; each person’s situation is different.”

Captain Li Jian put down his chopsticks, ”Jiang, listen to me, don’t be too stubborn.”

”If there’s someone suitable, try to get to know them.”

Jiang An smiled helplessly, ”Got it, Captain. I will consider it.”

After returning to the office from the canteen, Zhang Yean and Wan went back to their workstations to rest.

Jiang An headed straight to his office. Pushing open the door.

The afternoon sunlight spilled through the blinds onto the desk, where the thick case file still lay quietly on the coffee table.

He sat on the sofa, gently touching the cover of the file, and sank into deep thought.

This case was like a shroud of mist, enveloping his mind.

No surveillance, no eyewitnesses, no obvious motive...

The killer seemed to have disappeared without leaving a trace.

But Jiang An firmly believed there was no perfect crime; even the cunningest criminal would leave traces.

He opened the case file, re-examining each crime scene photo, each interview record, each piece of evidence analysis report.

As his eyes fell on the full-scene photo, his finger suddenly stopped.

In the photo, the bodies of a family of three were arranged in a triangular layout in the living room; the father fell beside the dining table, the mother curled up in front of the sofa, and the child’s body lain on the bed.

This layout seemed somewhat unusual.

Logically, if the killer intended to silence them, they should have concentrated their actions and quickly fled the scene.

But why were the three bodies so scattered in their distribution?

Could it be that something unexpected happened during the commission of the crime?

Or was there a special logic to the method used?

Jiang An closed his eyes, constructing a three-dimensional model of the crime scene in his mind.

He imagined himself walking into the room, step by step reconstructing the killer’s modus operandi.

Suddenly, he recalled Captain Li Jian having mentioned that the method used to kill the child differed from that used on the adults.

The adults were killed with a sharp object, one fatal blow, while the child died of asphyxiation.

Suddenly, he recalled what Captain Li Jian remarked, ”The primary scene remains sealed!”

”The bodies are frozen in the funeral home.”

If these two key factors are still there, could they be the starting points for the investigation?”

As he thought, Jiang An suddenly felt a wave of fatigue, sleepiness took over, and he slowly fell asleep.

In his dreams, he continued to ponder over the case.

It seemed like he transformed into a detective, back at the crime scene.

The first scene’s items unfolded before him, one by one.

Moreover, lined up before him were three bodies...

In the dream, the child suddenly sat up, a muffled sound came from its covered mouth, small hands desperately waving towards him...
