The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Chapter 515: Chapter 293: Why Is There So Little Bleeding From This Corpse?

Zhang Kun stared at the overly youthful face in front of him, and the words ”Jiang” that were at the tip of his tongue were swallowed back forcefully.

He hurriedly held Jiang An’s hand, his voice changing pitch, ”Hello, Mr. Jiang! I’m really sorry, I... I really didn’t recognize your importance, and just now didn’t realize at first...”

”Mr. Zhang, you’re too kind.”

Jiang An gently interrupted, ”I’ve only been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Team for a month, and it’s been less than a week since I became the deputy captain. It’s perfectly normal for you not to know me.”

”In just a month...”

Zhang Kun’s eyes widened, and he swallowed back the words that were at the tip of his tongue again. He discreetly stepped back half a step and exchanged an incredulous glance with Li Biao.

As he took another look at Jiang An, his gaze became more scrutinizing.

This young man dressed plainly, with a tall and straight build, bearing an air of maturity beyond his age.

The most striking were his eyes, clear yet fathomless, seemingly able to see through a person’s heart.

The atmosphere at the scene became momentarily stagnant.

Zhang Kun cleared his throat and quickly adjusted his demeanor, ”Mr. Jiang, let me report the scene investigation to you.”

Seeing Jiang An nod, he opened his notebook, ”Around 6:20 this morning, a villager found this electric scooter parked on the bridge while going to the vegetable field.”

”At first, it wasn’t given much attention, but then a shadow was vaguely seen under the bridge pier. Because it’s the dry season now, he went down to the riverbed to check and found it was a villager of this village, Wang Cuilan, 39 years old...”

After listening to the report, Jiang An nodded lightly, ”Now that the identity of the deceased is clear, have you all carefully examined the body?”

As he spoke, he turned his head to look under the bridge, and indeed saw a female corpse lying on the dry riverbed directly below the stone bridge.

The deceased was fully clothed, but the legs were in an unnatural bent position, with noticeable twisting and deformation in the upper limbs, clearly indicating multiple fractures all over the body.

Standing beside him, Zhang Kun said in a deep voice, ”I went down to take a preliminary look before you all arrived.

”The female deceased was neatly dressed, with obvious external injuries to both hands, and the major trauma was concentrated on the head.”

”However...” He looked up at the bridge about ten meters high, ”Falling from such a height, such injuries are not surprising.”

Given the limited information currently available, Jiang An did not rush to make any conclusions.

After a brief thought, he said, ”In that case, we’ll conduct a detailed examination of the scene and surrounding areas later.

”Additionally, while conducting the scene examination, Brother Biao and Wan, you two are in charge of visiting the surrounding residents to see if any valuable clues can be discovered.”

Li Biao and Wan straightened their backs immediately and responded in unison, ”Yes, Mr. Jiang!”

”We promise to complete the task, and if any new situations arise, we will report them to you immediately.”

Soon, all personnel started to act according to their assignments. Forensic officer Zhang Yean and Jiang An put on disposable rubber gloves and went down the slope to the bottom of the bridge.

Since it’s the dry season, the riverbed is completely exposed, revealing a bottom filled with various sizes of cobblestones.

Walking on the uneven riverbed, Zhang Yean couldn’t help but exclaim, ”Wow, with so many hard cobblestones, falling from a ten-meter high bridge, or even five or six meters, could be fatal instantly.”

”Especially the impact of these cobblestones on the head would definitely cause comminuted skull fractures, and the rib cage would suffer massive fractures as well.”

At this moment, Zhang Kun still stood in place, absentmindedly rubbing the second button of his police uniform with his rough fingers, a habit he had developed when nervous.

His mind buzzed like countless bees spinning inside his skull.

Fifteen years — a full fifteen years flashed back in his mind.

From a grassroots officer, enduring countless overnight shifts, handling numerous trivial matters;

Sitting and watching for three months straight to solve a theft case; fierce competition with twelve colleagues during the deputy section chief promotion;

And over the years, his hair slowly thinning and more gray hairs appearing in the mirror...

All of this amounted to just being the head of a remote township police station.

And that young man...

Zhang Kun’s gaze followed the tall figure in the distance.

A month into the job, his uniform hasn’t even creased, yet he’s already wearing the rank insignia of deputy captain in the Criminal Investigation Team.

That’s the position he had imagined countless times while tossing and turning in deep nights, the height he could only look up to during each commendation ceremony within the system.

”Are young people so remarkable now?”

He heard his own voice, parched and gritty, ”and this is just speaking on a normal promotion basis...”

When he turned to look at Deputy Director Huang Fei, he found that he was also staring into that direction in a daze.

Huang Fei withdrew his gaze, carefully choosing his words, ”This young man... is quite extraordinary.”

”Although he wears the most ordinary uniform, there’s an aura when he stands there.”

He paused, ”I noticed when he was observing the scene, his gaze was so sharp, like he could engrave each detail in his mind.”

”When speaking, he was articulate, neither overbearing nor falsely humble — this sense of propriety can’t be faked.”

”If he’s neither a rich second generation nor an official second generation, then could it be...”

Zhang Kun’s voice lowered, and his index finger unconsciously pointed upward.

”This...”

Deputy Director Huang looked around and lowered his voice, ”Hard to say!”

”But, in the city bureau meeting last month, colleagues from the criminal investigation department mentioned a newcomer who’s a case-solving expert, solving several long-standing unsolved cases.”

Zhang Kun felt the corners of his mouth twitch involuntarily, and his right eyelid trembled continuously.

He pulled out a cigarette pack, only to find the last cigarette already deformed from pressure.

”No matter how skilled, cases must rely on evidence.”

He crushed the empty cigarette pack into a ball, ”In my opinion, this case is a typical suicide.”

Deputy Director Huang glanced at his watch, ”The victim’s family is already on the way.”

Zhang Kun’s voice suddenly rose, startling the sparrows on the courtyard wall, ”Just follow the procedure, sign the necessary documents, and let the family take the body away, isn’t it over?”

Suddenly, he abruptly stopped because that young officer in the distance suddenly glanced over, his gaze penetrating through half the courtyard like a sharp blade, making his neck hair stand on end.

Deputy Director Huang lightly cleared his throat, ”Director, I suggest we do as they request. After all...”

He gave a meaningful glance at the city bureau police car parked in the yard, ”People who rise this quickly might have connections we’re unaware of.”

Zhang Kun silently looked toward the horizon, the last ray of sunlight swallowed by dusk.

He suddenly recalled what his instructor said when he graduated from the police academy: In the police system, some people rise fast because they know how to handle affairs, some because they genuinely have skills — and the most terrifying are those who possess both.

At the same time, Jiang An and Zhang Yean had already reached the body at the bottom of the riverbed.

The body was covered with a white sheet, leaving only the head and hands exposed.

Jiang An squatted down, expertly put on gloves, and gently lifted the sheet.

A ghastly female corpse lay fully revealed: the face was severely deformed from impact, completely unrecognizable.

The arms and fingers were bent unnaturally like bamboo joints, clearly having multiple fractures.

Zhang Yean raised the professional camera and adjusted the focus, ”Mr. Jiang, shall we start the examination now?”

”Sure, you proceed with the standard procedure, and I’ll assist you.”

Said Jiang An, habitually moving slowly around the body, observing its condition from different angles.

This was his professional habit — ”a ridge when viewed from the side and a peak when seen from the front, differing heights from near and far.”

By viewing from multiple angles, one can often discover details easily overlooked by a single perspective.

Suddenly, his brows furrowed, and his pupils shrank sharply.

The very next moment, he turned to Zhang Yean, ”Sister, there’s something wrong with this case.”

”What’s wrong?” Zhang Yean immediately put down the camera.

”Did you notice the amount of bleeding at the scene... it’s too little.”
