The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Chapter 531: Chapter 301: The Third Man!

As they reached the door, Li Guang suddenly grabbed Zhao Ming’s arm.

”Officer, please, you must get to the bottom of this!”

”Cuilan, she... can’t just leave in such an unclear manner!”

Mr. Fu nodded solemnly, ”We will do our very best.”

At this moment, on the highway, Jiang An and Wan were driving swiftly.

The blue light from the dashboard illuminated their weary faces.

”Mr. Chen, actually, we could let the local precinct gather some initial information.”

Wan said while holding onto the steering wheel, ”That way, we wouldn’t have to rush through the night.”

Jiang An rubbed his temples, ”This clue is too critical.”

”Wang Jun’s alibi hinges on the testimony from this salon. We must personally verify every detail.”

Wan glanced at the navigation, ”At this speed, we can get there before two o’clock.”

”But at that time, will the salon still be open?”

”At places like that, business gets better late at night,” Jiang An remarked meaningfully.

By the time they arrived at the ”Once More” hair salon, it was already 1:40 AM.

The salon’s neon lights continued to flash alluringly in the night.

Through the frosted glass door, one could see people inside.

Wan pushed the door open, and a heavy scent of perfume greeted them.

Two young women, heavily made-up, were curled up on the sofa playing with their phones. When they saw someone come in, they immediately donned professional smiles.

”Welcome, gentlemen~” A blonde-haired woman greeted them enthusiastically.

Soon after, Wan showed his officer badge, ”Police!”

”Don’t be nervous, just have a few questions.”

The two women immediately became flustered, the older one trying to stay calm, ”Officer, we only do regular massages here...”

Jiang An straightforwardly showed a photo of Wang Jun, ”Do you know this person?”

The blonde woman leaned in for a look, then shook her head.

The other woman, wearing a low-cut dress, took the photo, examined it carefully, and responded, ”I know him; he was the man who came last night.”

”Do you remember the specific time?” Jiang An pressed on.

”I remember it very clearly,” the woman puckered her lips, ”He came at 8:30 PM and left when it was almost 5 AM.”

”In between, he extended the session twice and even gave extra tips.”

Suddenly, she lowered her voice, ”This man smelled like cement, and when changing, a high-altitude work permit slipped out—I helped him pick it up.”

Jiang An and Wan exchanged a glance.

This timeline perfectly matched Wang Jun’s testimony.

The detail about the high-altitude work permit was an even stronger corroboration.

After thinking for a moment, Jiang An asked, ”Does he come often?”

”First time I’ve seen him.”

The woman shook her head, ”He was generous but sure gave us a hard time.”

....

After leaving the ”Once More” salon, the night had deepened.

The two headed to a nearby all-night barbecue shop, where Wan eagerly ordered a large portion of barbecue.

The meat skewers sizzled on the charcoal grill, the dripping fat gave off clouds of white smoke.

Two minutes later, a plate of aromatic barbecue was served.

Wan ate with great relish, occasionally letting out satisfied sighs.

However, Jiang An merely mechanically turned the can of iced tea in his hand.

”You should try this, junior!”

As he spoke, Wan handed over a skewer of charred and fragrant lamb, teasingly saying, ”You’ve just been promoted to Vice Squad Leader in the Criminal Investigation Division, so you should pay attention to your health.”

”If you work your body to exhaustion, how will you become the leader someday?”

Jiang An forced a smile, then downed the iced tea in one gulp.

”You eat, brother; driving was tiring today.”

”I just feel so blocked inside, truly have no appetite.”

His gaze fell on the greasy tabletop, his brows knitted tightly.

Wan took a big bite of the skewer, the oil sliding down his chin.

”Still, it’s strange—last night Wang Jun suddenly seemed... so honest in the interrogation room.”

He chewed his food, speaking fuzzily, ”Could it be he used to visit a different salon?”

”That’s why those women didn’t know him?”

”It’s possible.”

Jiang An gently tapped his fingers on the table, ”But something about last night feels odd.”

”According to what we know, Wang Jun has always been a family-oriented guy, and...”

He paused, ”A man who wouldn’t usually even buy a drink, suddenly gave a $100 tip after some fun?”

”Totally out of character.”

”Exactly!”

Suddenly, Wan lowered his voice, ”Mr. Chen, do you think he... found out about his wife’s incident?”

This sudden thought made his eyes light up.

Jiang An raised his head, a trace of bewilderment flashing in his tired eyes.

”Finding out about his wife’s incident and going to the salon—what’s the link between the two?”

Immediately, Wan picked up another skewer of grilled chicken hearts, eating while shaking his head, ”Indeed, no obvious connection. But...”

He licked his lips, ”Don’t you find his behavior too abnormal?”

”There’s only one salon around here. Why did he choose last night to go, and moreover...”

”You’re right.”

Jiang An suddenly interrupted him, opening another can of iced tea, ”Do you think he might be hiding something from us?”

”Hiding?”

Wan put down the half-eaten skewer, ”You mean he didn’t fully disclose the truth?”

”This... certainly possible.”

Instantly, Jiang An’s expression turned serious, his fingers unconsciously rubbing the iced tea cup.

He checked his watch, ”Later we need to go back and interrogate him again, focus on verifying his movements that night.”

”See if, behind his abnormal actions, there’s some undisclosed reason, or...”

”Other hidden facts related to the case.”

After hurriedly finishing their meal, the two drove back to Jiangcheng.

The pre-dawn highway was shrouded in mist, with tiny droplets forming on the car windows.

Upon arriving at the precinct, the east was already showing light, and the officer on duty yawned as he let them in.

Before you know it, Jiang An and Wan pushed open the door to the interrogation room.

At this moment, Wang Jun was lying on the metal table sleeping, uneven snores reverberating in the empty room.

Wan forcefully slapped the table, ”Wake up!”

Wang Jun jolted awake, his bloodshot eyes filled with surprise.

”Now, I will ask you a question, and you must answer truthfully.”

Jiang An’s voice wasn’t loud, but it carried an undeniable authority.

”You said you went to the salon the night before last, had you been there before?”

The man rubbed his sleepy eyes, ”No, no... That was my first time...”

His voice grew smaller and smaller, eventually turning into a whisper.

”First time and so generous? Even tipping?”

Wan couldn’t resist interrupting, leaning forward, his hands resting on the table.

The man’s shoulders visibly flinched.

He lowered his head, his fingers interlocking, ”I... I just...”

His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down, ”My wife hasn’t slept with me for a long time.”

”The key was that night...” His voice suddenly choked.

”Originally, I was sleeping in the construction site dorm, wanted to call home to check, but...”

The air in the interrogation room seemed to freeze.

Jiang An and Wan exchanged a look, ”Go on.”

”When I called...”

The man’s fist suddenly clenched tightly, ”Heard a man’s panting on the other end of the line!”

His face turned completely red, ”I was so angry I cursed at the phone and hung up, but the more I thought about it the angrier I got...”

”I work tirelessly to make money for the family, but my wife is at home...”

As he spoke, his voice trembled, ”The construction site doesn’t allow going out at night, in a fit of anger I climbed over the wall...”

Instantly, Jiang An stood up abruptly, the chair creating a sharp noise across the floor.

”You said when you called the night before, heard a man’s voice? What time exactly?”

”The public phone at the site...”

Wang Jun tried to recall, ”Probably... around 8:30 PM.”

”8:30... man’s voice...”

Jiang An murmured, looking at Wan.

The interrogation room fell into a deathly silence, with only the ”tick-tock” sound from the wall clock echoing.

At this moment, the sky outside was gradually becoming brighter.
