The Greykeep Chronicles

There are thirty-one gates on the continent of Avarra, and in the eleven days after the Council voted to watch, I walked through every one of them with Eleanor Stonehand and the Castellan.

I hadn’t known there were thirty-one. Eleanor built them for the kingdoms that came home after the war, so that a harvest in Lyradon could reach a famine in the south in an afternoon. She built them in market squares and at crossroads. One of them is in the back room of a bakery. One is in a sheep-fold on a hillside in the far east, because the shepherds there asked for it, and Eleanor says she has never in her life been able to say no to a shepherd.

Every one of them has a brass plate, and every plate has her closing mark cut at the bottom, held, and her name-knot under that. And since Teo, every one of them was supposed to have one more thing. A line of ward-writing that Eleanor and the Castellan had worked out together over a long week of not sleeping, which taught the gate to feel for a name that had been locked onto someone, the way Kessavel’s brand locks it, and to close.

She’d done the big gates first. Now she was doing the rest. And she wanted me with her, because I can feel gates.

”You feel them from the inside,” she said, the morning we started, in her drafting room above the chapel, packing her chisels into a canvas roll. ”I only know them from the outside. And the Castellan is coming because it knows every name that’s gone through every gate in twenty years. And because it asked.”

”It asked?”

”It asked.” Eleanor pushed her spectacles up her nose and looked at me over the top of them. ”It said, I would like to see them. I have only ever felt them from the lower hall. They are mine also.” She picked up the canvas roll. ”So. That’s three of us.”

”Four,” said a voice from the door.

Wynn Harlow was standing on the landing with a leather case of instruments in each hand and a third under his arm, and a satchel over his shoulder so full of paste-pots that it clinked.

”Four,” he said again, a little out of breath. ”If that’s all right. Someone has to carry the paste.”

* * *

I should say something about Wynn, because I didn’t know him well before those eleven days, and I knew him a great deal better after.

He was Eleanor’s junior ward-keeper. Twenty-six, thin, quick, with ink on his cuffs that never washed out and a way of standing a little too close when he was explaining something. He’d made the fair copy of my notebook for the archive, because my handwriting is terrible and his is beautiful. He’d been with Eleanor since he was fourteen.

”One nod,” he said on the first day, about the closing mark he’d cut at Greymere. ”From Eleanor. That’s like a parade from anyone else.”

On the second day he told me about his family. A mother and two younger sisters, in a fishing town on the southern coast, three days past Orselle by the coast road. He said its name, but so fast I didn’t catch it, and I didn’t like to ask again. His father had been a net-maker, and had died when Wynn was twelve, and Wynn had walked to Havenreach at fourteen with a letter from the town priest saying he was good with his hands and better with letters, and Eleanor had read the letter and looked at his hands and taken him on that afternoon.

”I send them half my wage,” he said. ”Every month. My youngest sister wants to be a ward-keeper too. I’m teaching her by letter.” He smiled, a quick, crooked smile. ”She’s better at it than I was.”

I liked him. That’s the thing I want to write down here, plainly, before anything else. I liked him very much.

* * *

We did it properly. Eleanor doesn’t know how to do anything any other way.

At every gate, she cleaned the brass plate with a soft cloth and a little vinegar, and read every line on it twice, lips moving, the way Severin had read them in the lower hall. Then she cleaned out every cut of the closing mark with a fine steel pick, and deepened it where the brass had worn, and checked her name-knot was whole. Then she took out the new chisel, the one with the bone handle that she keeps wrapped in a separate cloth, and cut the new line.

Wynn held the plate steady with a padded clamp and mixed the black paste, the nameless one that smells of pine and burned hair, and painted it into each new cut with a brush no wider than an eyelash. He was very good at it. Eleanor watched him do it at the first gate and the second, and after that she didn’t watch anymore.

And at every gate, while they worked, the Castellan stood beside the arch.

In the bakery in the north, it had to stoop nearly double to get through the door, and the baker’s three children hid behind the counter, and the Castellan very slowly turned its head and said, ”Good morning. You are Tib, and Arn, and Oskar. You went through this gate to Havenreach at the last spring fair. Oskar was sick on the far side.”

The children shrieked and ran away, then came back and followed it around for the rest of the hour.

At every gate, while Eleanor cut, it put one great metal hand flat on the stone of the arch, and stood very still, and listened.

”For what?” I asked it, at the fourth gate.

”For anything that is not mine,” said the Castellan.

* * *

And my job was to feel.

I’d stand in the arch with my eyes shut. A gate is a fold that somebody has pinned open, like a book held open at one page by a stone, and you can feel, if you’re careful, if anything has been wedged between the pages that shouldn’t be there.

By the end of the third day we’d done eleven gates, and they were all perfectly clean, and I was beginning to feel foolish standing in an arch with my eyes shut while a bakery full of children watched me.

”That’s good,” said Eleanor, when I said so. She was sitting on an upturned crate in a cobbled square in the south, eating a peppermint, with her chisels spread out on a cloth beside her. ”That’s what we want. Clean.”

”It doesn’t feel like doing anything.”

”It’s not supposed to feel like doing anything.” She crunched the peppermint. ”It’s supposed to be something. Every gate we’ve done is one more door he can’t use. That’s not nothing, Garrick. That’s a wall, one brick at a time.” She looked up at me. ”Your father said watch. This is what watching looks like, when you do it properly. It’s boring, and it’s slow, and every bit of it matters.”

Wynn, packing the paste-pots back into his satchel, laughed.

”She told me that on my first day,” he said. ”It’s boring, and it’s slow, and every bit of it matters. I was fourteen. I thought she was the most frightening person I’d ever met.”

”I am the most frightening person you’ve ever met,” said Eleanor.

”Yes,” said Wynn. ”But now I know it’s on purpose.”

* * *

On the seventh day, at Orselle, the gate closed on somebody.

The Orselle gate stands at the top of the harbor steps, in a little square of white stone with a lamp-seller’s stall that never closes, and its plate is so crusted with salt that Eleanor has to clean it twice. The gate runs all day: porters, midwives, traders with glass packed in straw. Eleanor didn’t close it while she worked. She never closes a gate if she can help it. She just worked to one side, with Wynn holding the clamp, while people went through the shimmer in a steady stream behind her, and the Castellan stood beside the arch with its hand on the stone, and named every single one of them under its breath as they passed.

I was standing at the edge of the arch with my eyes shut. Not inside it. There were too many people.

Eleanor cut the last stroke of the new line a little before noon. Wynn painted the paste in. Eleanor sat back on her heels and said, ”There,” the way she always does.

And the gate shut.

Not slowly. Not the way a gate closes at night, when both sides agree. It shut the way a mouth shuts. The gray shimmer in the arch went white, and then went hard, like ice forming in a single breath, and every person on the steps stopped dead and stared. And in the middle of the arch, half in and half out, with one foot on the white stone of the square and the other on nothing at all, a young man was standing perfectly still with a crate of lamp-glass in his arms.

He couldn’t go forward. He couldn’t go back. The gate had closed around him like a hand.

”Not mine,” said the Castellan.

It said it very loudly. I’d never heard it raise its voice before. Everyone in the square heard it, and the lamp-seller dropped a lamp.

”Not mine,” it said again, quieter. It took its hand off the stone and turned its great iron head and looked at the young man in the arch. ”That name is not his. Someone has locked it on him. I do not know the one underneath.” It paused. ”I would like to.”

* * *

He was about nineteen. Sandy-haired, sunburnt, in a porter’s leather apron, with a porter’s thick shoulders. He was holding the crate of lamp-glass so tightly his knuckles were white, and his face had gone the color of the plate.

”I didn’t do anything,” he said. His voice cracked. ”I carry glass to Havenreach for Master Avel, ask anyone...”

”We will,” said Eleanor.

She’d stood up. She was looking at him over her spectacles, and her face had gone very calm, the way it goes when a plate is giving her trouble. She didn’t touch the gate. She didn’t touch him. She just looked at the arch, and at the white hard shimmer around him, and then at the inside of his left forearm, where the leather sleeve of his apron had ridden up as he clutched the crate.

There was a mark there. Small. Coin-sized. A single iron link, burned in, edged with silver.

Everyone in the kingdoms knew it by then. The Council had sent Caitlin’s drawing to every gatehouse in Avarra after Teo.

Kessavel’s mark.

Somebody on the steps gasped. Somebody else said, ”Chained,” in a frightened voice, and there was a little movement in the crowd, away from the arch, the way a crowd moves away from a dog that might bite.

”No,” I said.

I said it loudly. Louder than I meant. Everyone turned and looked at me, and some of them knew who I was, and the movement stopped.

”No,” I said again. ”He isn’t chained. He’s branded. It isn’t the same.” I took a breath. ”There’s a rule. The Council made it. Anybody with that mark on them is a Teo. Not an enemy.” I looked at the young man in the arch. ”We ask their name. We ask what they want.”

The young man stared at me.

”Garrick,” said Eleanor quietly, without looking around. ”Fold. Bring Aurelia.”

I folded.

Orselle to Greykeep is a long way to fold. A few months ago it would have put me on my knees. That morning I came out in the inner court beside the fountain, said ”Orselle, the gate, a branded boy,” to Aurelia, who was sitting on the fountain’s rim feeding sparrows, and she stood up and took my hand without a word.

* * *

We came out in the white square seven minutes after I’d left it. Aurelia was barefoot, in her plain white dress, with the light coming off her so bright that half the harbor of Orselle stopped what it was doing and looked up the hill. She crossed the square without hurrying, and the crowd parted for her without being asked, and she stopped in front of the arch where the young man was still standing frozen with his crate of glass.

She didn’t look at the mark. She looked at his face.

”Hello,” she said. ”My name is Aurelia. You’ve had a fright.” She smiled at him. ”May I take that crate? It looks heavy.”

He stared at her. Then, very slowly, as if he were afraid it might be a trick, he held it out.

She took it from him and put it down on the stone, carefully, and then she looked at him again.

”Will you tell me your name?” she said. ”Not the one they gave you. The one underneath. You can say no.”

His mouth worked. Nothing came out.

”They called me Porter,” he said at last, in a whisper. ”Just Porter. Since I was sixteen. A man came on a grain ship. He said he’d give my mother money for the winter, if I’d carry things for him. He said it would only hurt for a minute.” He looked down at his arm. ”It did only hurt for a minute. And then I couldn’t remember my name. I tried. I tried every night. It’s like a word on the tip of your tongue. Three years.” His eyes filled. ”He said one day someone would come through this gate and ask me to carry something to Greykeep. And I’d carry it. And I wouldn’t be able to say no.” He looked up at her. ”Nobody’s come yet. I swear. Nobody’s asked me yet.”

”I believe you,” said Aurelia. ”Now, I’m going to ask you something instead. I’m going to ask you to try one more time. Just once. For me.” She put her hand very gently on his arm, over the mark, not pressing. ”What did your mother call you, when you were small? When she called you in for supper?”

The young man shut his eyes.

His face twisted. I could see him reaching for it. The way you reach for something on a high shelf in the dark. And the brand on his arm went from silver to white, and the gate around him groaned, and the light around Aurelia went up like a fire catching, gold and blinding and very, very warm.

”Kip,” he said.

The brand cracked.

I heard it. Everybody on those steps heard it. A sound like ice breaking on a pond in the first thaw, exactly the sound it had made in the Concordia gate when Aurelia broke Teo’s. And the white hard shimmer in the arch went soft and gray again, all at once, and let go of him, and the young man stumbled forward out of the gate onto the white stone of the square, and fell to his knees, and put both hands over his face.

”Kip,” he said, through his fingers. ”Kip. It’s Kip. It’s Kip. Kip Marrow. My mother’s Gilla Marrow, she sells eels on the north quay, I’m Kip...”

”Hello, Kip,” said Aurelia, and knelt down on the stone beside him, and put her arms around him.

The Castellan, beside the arch, turned its head and looked at him for a long moment.

”Kip Marrow,” it said. ”Yes. That fits.” It put its hand back on the stone of the arch. ”Now I know you.”

* * *

He didn’t die.

Teo had been held a hundred and twelve years, and when Aurelia broke his brand all those years came down on him at once, and he chose to go. Kip had been held three. When the brand broke, the three years came back to him the way a lost afternoon comes back to you, a little dizzy, a little strange, and then just his. He was nineteen, and sunburnt, and crying in the square, and absolutely, entirely alive.

His mother came up from the north quay at a run an hour later, in her eel-seller’s apron, because half of Orselle had gone down to tell her. She didn’t say anything. She just took his face in both her hands the way Mother Kitto had taken Hobb’s, and the way Aurelia had taken Benjamin’s, and held it.

”Three years,” she said at last. ”Three years you’ve been calling yourself Porter and I thought you’d gone strange from the work.”

”Sorry, Ma.”

Mary wrote it in the black book that evening, when we got home. Kip Marrow, of Orselle. Branded at sixteen. Found by the gate. Unbranded by Aurelia. Alive.

And under that, in my father’s handwriting, which is almost as bad as mine:

First one we caught before anyone asked him anything.

* * *

After Orselle, nobody said boring again.

We did the last nineteen gates in four days. Wynn went very quiet after Orselle, and painted paste into every new cut as though his life depended on it. At the sheep-fold gate in the far east, he cut the whole new line himself, start to finish, while Eleanor stood behind him with her arms folded. When he’d finished she bent and read it twice, with her lips moving, and then straightened up.

She didn’t nod. She put her hand on his shoulder, very briefly, and took it away again.

Wynn didn’t say anything. But he packed the paste-pots back into his satchel very slowly, and when he stood up his eyes were bright, and he wouldn’t look at either of us for a while.

The gates were clean. All of them. Every plate, every mark, every name-knot. No more branded porters. No more locked names. Nothing wedged between the pages. By the end of the tenth day, the far end of every gate on the continent of Avarra would close like a mouth on any name Kessavel had ever burned onto anyone, and the Castellan had stood beside every one of them with its hand on the stone and listened, and found nothing that wasn’t its own.

That left the lower hall.

* * *

We did the six arches on the eleventh morning, with the high lamps still lit at each end of the vault and the floor still cold.

Lyradon. The two southern towns. Greymere and Orselle, sharing their arch. Westmere, the smallest, at the end. Eleanor cut every one, and Wynn painted every one, and I stood in every one with my eyes shut, and every one was clean.

Then Concordia.

I’d been dreading it. There’s always been something in that gate. A wobble, very faint, like the crease in the spine of a book held open at one page too long. Eleanor had sat on a stool behind that arch the night Severin read the plates, waiting to see if he’d notice it too.

”All right,” said Eleanor. She’d cleaned the plate. She’d read every line twice. She’d taken out the bone-handled chisel, and then put it down again, and looked at me. ”Go on. Tell me what it is. I’ve been wondering for nine years.”

I went in.

I stood in the gray shimmer of the Concordia arch with my eyes shut and my hands open at my sides, and felt for the crease.

It was there. Exactly where it had always been. A little lean in the fold, a little give, toward the Concordia side. Not a crack. Not a gap. Nothing wedged in it. Nothing wrong with it. It was more as if the gate had a habit. As if, after a long time of doing one thing over and over, it had started to do it before it was asked.

And I knew the shape of it.

I’d have known it anywhere. It was the shape of a small boy running. Of two small boys, running, one from each side, to swap a spoon or a wooden duck in the middle and run back. Of a girl going through to Concordia to sit on the end of a bed in the palace and argue about books. Of another girl coming through the other way, with her red hair coming loose, to sit on the east wall and drink tea at dawn. Thousands of times. Year after year. Since before any of us could walk properly. Our feet had gone through that gate so many times that the gate had learned them, the way a path learns the feet that walk it, the way a door learns the hand that opens it every morning.

The wobble was us.

I opened my eyes. I don’t know what my face was doing. Eleanor looked at me for a long moment over her spectacles, and then she began, very slowly, to smile.

”Oh,” she said. ”Oh, of course it is.”

”I haven’t said anything.”

”You don’t need to. You’ve gone pink.” She shook her head. ”Nine years. Nine years I’ve been worrying about that crease. Lying awake about it. I nearly cut the whole arch out and started again, the winter after the stream.” She took her spectacles off and rubbed her eyes. ”It’s not a fault. It’s a path.”

”It is not a fault,” said the Castellan.

We both turned.

It was standing beside the Concordia arch with its great iron hand flat on the stone, exactly as it had stood beside every other gate. It hadn’t spoken all morning. Its head turned, slowly, and it looked at me.

”Three thousand, eight hundred and forty-one crossings,” it said. ”Garrick Grey. Concordia, outward. Since you were three. Ignatius of Concordia, inward, three thousand, six hundred and two. Carol Grey, inward and outward, two thousand, nine hundred and ninety. Seraphina of Concordia, inward, three thousand and eleven, of which four hundred and twelve before sunrise.” It paused. ”I have counted every one. The gate has counted them also. It learned you. It leans a little toward the other side, so that you will arrive sooner.”

Eleanor put her hand over her mouth.

”Leave it,” I said. ”Please. Can we leave it?”

”I was always going to leave it,” said Eleanor, a little thickly. ”Now I know what it is, I wouldn’t touch it for anything.” She picked up the bone-handled chisel. ”I’ll cut the new line underneath. It won’t touch the lean. Nothing Kessavel’s ever burned on anybody will get through this arch. But you four will still arrive a little sooner than anyone else.” She knelt in front of the plate. ”That’s the best ward I never made.”

Wynn, behind her, holding the paste-pot, was looking at the arch with a strange expression on his face.

”A gate that leans toward the people it loves,” he said quietly, half to himself. ”I didn’t know they could do that.”

”Neither did I,” said Eleanor, and began to cut.

* * *

That night was the night after the new moon.

My father went to Westmere himself, with me and Benjamin and Tamar and Aurelia. We didn’t go onto the pier. We stood on the harbor wall in the dark, the five of us, a long way back, with our coats buttoned up against the wind off the sea.

The letter was on the end of the north pier. Mary had sealed it with plain gray wax and no mark at all, because my father said we didn’t need one. It lay on the last plank, in the dark, held down against the wind by the same smooth gray pebble that had held down Malachar’s.

We waited a long time.

Around midnight, the sea went quiet.

Not flat, not held. Just quiet, the way a harbor goes quiet when the tide turns and the wind drops at the same moment. And on the end of the north pier, all by itself, with nobody near it, a little lamp came on.

It was the brass ship’s lamp, the same one as before. Burning low and steady. We hadn’t seen anyone put it there.

Aurelia made a small sound and put her hand on Benjamin’s arm.

Nobody went out onto the pier. You don’t walk up to someone who’s been hiding for a hundred years. You wait for them.

The lamp burned on the end of the pier until a little before dawn, and then, in the gray before sunrise, it went out. And when Tamar walked out along the pier with a lantern in the first light, the letter was gone.

The pebble was still there. The lamp was still there, cold now.

And beside it, in the place where the letter had been, there was a shell. A small one, white, spiral, the kind that only washes up after a storm, with the narrow end worn away so that you could blow through it. Tamar brought it back along the pier and held it out on his flat palm in the gray light.

Benjamin picked it up. He turned it over. Then, without saying anything, he put it to his lips and blew.

It made a sound. Very soft. A single long low note, like wind across the mouth of a bottle, that went out over the harbor and across the water and kept going, a long way, toward the west.

Under our feet, very faint, deep in the stones of the harbor wall, the Hold began to hum again.

”Oh,” said Benjamin. He was looking at the shell in his hand. ”Oh. She’s left me a way to call her.”

And my father, standing beside me on the harbor wall in the dawn with his hands in his coat pockets, looked out at the empty pier and the cold lamp and the quiet sea, and said, to nobody in particular, in the voice he uses in the little kitchen at six in the morning:

”Little doors. Opening from the inside.”
