The Greykeep Chronicles

I woke to the kettle.

That is not unusual. I have woken to the kettle almost every morning of my life. Helena puts it on before dawn, every day, in the little kitchen at the bottom of the east stair, and has done since before I was born, and the sound of it coming to the boil travels up through the old pipes in the walls in a long thin whistle that reaches every bedroom in that wing. Most mornings I don’t even hear it. It’s like hearing your own heart.

That morning I heard it.

I lay in bed with my eyes open and listened to it rise, and hold, and drop away as she lifted it off the heat. And I realized, lying there, that it was the first morning in more than a month that I had woken up without something heavy already sitting on my chest. No letter in black and silver. No ships off Westmere. No barge creeping up the river a mark at a time. No man in a gray coat sleeping in the east wing.

Just the kettle.

Seraphina was still asleep beside me, with one arm flung over her face. Little Uriah was asleep in his cot at the foot of the bed, on his back, with his arms up over his head like a small surrendering soldier. The window was gray, going gold.

I got up very quietly and went down.

* * *

Helena was at the stove.

She was always at the stove. She had her sleeves rolled to the elbow and her gray hair pinned up any old way and a wooden spoon in one hand, and the little kitchen was warm and close and smelled of oats and cinnamon and the first loaf of the day, which was sitting on the rack by the window, still too hot to cut.

She didn’t turn around.

”Sit,” she said. ”Tea’s in the pot. Porridge in ten minutes. Don’t touch the bread.”

I sat. I poured the tea. I did not touch the bread.

It was very quiet. The sun came up over the garden wall and laid a long yellow stripe across the scrubbed table. A blackbird was going on about something in the pear tree outside. Helena stirred, and hummed under her breath, a tune with no words that I have heard my whole life and never once heard her finish.

”You slept,” she said, after a while. It wasn’t a question.

”I did.”

”Good.” She tapped the spoon on the rim of the pot. ”First time in a month. I could tell from the stairs. You’ve been coming down them like a man carrying a sack of stones.”

”Have I?”

”All of you have.” She lifted the lid of the porridge, looked at it, put it back. ”This whole house has been coming down my stairs like a funeral since that boy came through the Westmere gate with his letter. I’ve been counting.” She sniffed. ”Today you came down like a person.”

I didn’t know what to say to that. So I drank my tea.

* * *

Carol came next.

She came down the east stair in her nightgown and the blue shawl, with her braid half undone and her feet bare, and sat down across from me without a word, and held out her cup, and I filled it. Her hands were warm. I noticed. I don’t think I will ever stop noticing.

”You slept,” said Helena, without turning around.

”Like a stone,” said Carol. ”I don’t think I moved all night. I woke up in exactly the same shape I went to sleep in.”

”Good.”

Then Grandpa Garrick, in his old brown cardigan with the holes in both elbows, with sawdust in his eyebrows from yesterday and a half-carved horse in his pocket that he took out and set on the table beside his cup, as he does every morning, as if it were a dog that went everywhere with him. He kissed Helena on the back of the neck on his way past the stove. She swatted him with the spoon without looking. He sat down at the head of the table, which is his, and always has been, even though the king of the country sometimes sits at the other end.

Then Mary and Melody, together, the way they always come down. Mary already dressed, with her book. Melody in a nightshirt and the red dwarf-made boots from their anniversary, which she now wears to breakfast, and to bed, and very possibly in the bath. Melody’s ears were flat with sleepiness and she put her head down on the table next to the bread and did not lift it again for a quarter of an hour.

Then Roderic, at a run, because he always comes down at a run. Then Caitlin, behind him, already reading. Then Elenos and Faelan together, arguing about something to do with a frog. Then little Mirelle, still mostly asleep, who climbed straight into Grandpa Garrick’s lap and put her face in his cardigan and went back to sleep there.

Then Mother and Adriana, arm in arm, in their dressing gowns, laughing at something one of them had said on the stairs, and stopping in the doorway to look at the kitchen, which by then had about twice as many people in it as it was built for.

”Oh,” said Mother. ”Is it everyone?”

”Nearly,” said Helena. ”Sit wherever there’s room. There isn’t any.”

Then Father, in his socks, last of all, with his hair standing up and his eyes still half closed. He stood in the doorway and looked at all of us, crammed in around the scrubbed table and on the window seat and on the step by the garden door, with the yellow light coming in across the table and the steam going up from the porridge pot. And he didn’t say anything at all for a moment.

Then he went and stood behind Helena at the stove, and put his arms around her from behind, which he does perhaps twice a year, and rested his chin on top of her head.

”Thank you,” he said.

”For what?” said Helena. ”I haven’t served anything yet.”

”For the kettle,” said Father.

Helena went very still for a moment. Then she reached up and patted his arm, twice, with the hand that wasn’t holding the spoon.

”Every morning,” she said. ”Since the stream. You know that.”

”I know,” said Father. ”I just wanted to say it.”

* * *

It was Roderic who started it. Of course it was.

We were halfway through the porridge, and the bread had finally been declared cool enough to cut, and Helena had cut it, in thick slices, the way she does, so that every slice is exactly the same width and nobody can complain. And Roderic, with his mouth full, said:

”What do you think he’s like? Really?”

Everyone knew who he meant. Nobody had said the name in the kitchen. Nobody had needed to.

”Roderic,” said Adriana.

”I’m only asking. Everyone keeps talking about him like he’s weather. Like a storm. But he’s a person, isn’t he? Mostly? He eats breakfast. Probably.” Roderic swallowed. ”What kind of person asks for someone’s sister and someone’s wife in the same letter and signs it Who Holds?”

There was a little silence around the table.

Then Helena turned around from the stove.

She had the wooden spoon in one hand and the tea towel over her shoulder, and she looked at Roderic over the top of her spectacles, which had slid down to the end of her nose in the steam, and she said, in a perfectly level voice:

”A proud one.”

”Just proud?”

”There’s no just about it.” Helena put the spoon down on the edge of the stove. ”I have fed a great many proud men in my life, Roderic Grey. Lords. Generals. Two kings and a duke. A god or three, at this table, who shall remain nameless.” Loki was not present, but everyone looked at the chair he usually sat in anyway. ”And I will tell you exactly what a proud man is, because it’s very simple, and nobody ever believes me.”

Nobody moved. Even Melody lifted her head off the table.

”A proud man,” said Helena, ”is a man who has mistaken being obeyed for being loved.”

She let that sit for a moment.

”You can always tell,” she went on. ”Three ways. First, he never eats what he’s given. He eats what he asked for. If you put a plate of something good in front of him that he didn’t ask for, he’ll push it away, because if he didn’t choose it, it doesn’t count.” She held up one finger. ”Second, he never says thank you to the person who cooked it. He says it to the person who carried it in. Because the person who carried it in is the one he can see.” Second finger. ”And third...”

She paused.

”Third,” she said, more quietly, ”he has never once in his whole life been told no by somebody who loved him. Not once. Because everybody who ever loved him was too frightened to. Or too polite. Or too busy telling him yes.” She picked up the spoon again. ”And so he thinks no is something only enemies say. And he thinks the people who say yes to everything must be the ones who love him most.” She shook her head. ”And he’s wrong on both counts. And he’ll be wrong till the day he dies, unless somebody who loves him has the nerve to tell him no and stay in the room.”

The kitchen was very quiet.

”That’s very precise,” said Mary, after a moment. She was writing it down.

”I’ve had a long time to think about it,” said Helena. ”I’ve cooked a lot of breakfasts.”

* * *

”You told me no,” said Grandpa Garrick.

He said it from the head of the table, mildly, with little Mirelle still asleep on his chest and the half-carved horse in his other hand. He didn’t look up. He just said it, the way you’d mention that it looked like rain.

Helena turned around and looked at him.

”I did,” she said.

”Twice.”

”Once.” Helena pointed the spoon at him. ”I told you no once. The second time I didn’t say anything at all. I just walked off. That’s different.”

”It felt like no.”

”It was meant to.”

The whole table was looking from one of them to the other now. Even Father, at the far end, had put down his cup. I had heard a great many stories about my grandparents in my life, but never this one. I don’t think any of us had.

”What happened?” said Caitlin. She had stopped reading.

Grandpa Garrick shifted little Mirelle a little higher on his shoulder.

”Harvest fair,” he said. ”In the market square at Valewood, when I was twenty-two and she was nineteen. There was dancing. I’d been watching her across the square for an hour, working up to it, and finally I walked over and asked her to dance, and she looked at me as if I were something the cat had brought in, and said no.” He turned the little horse over in his fingers. ”So I said, All right, and went home.”

”That’s it?” said Roderic.

”That’s it. I went home and I didn’t go back.” Grandpa almost smiled. ”Next harvest fair, a year later, I went to the fair again, and I didn’t go anywhere near her. I’d been told no. So I stayed on the other side of the square with my brother and ate a pie.”

”And?”

”And she came across the whole square,” said Grandpa, ”with everyone watching, and stood in front of me and my pie, and said, Aren’t you going to ask me again? And I said, No. You told me no.” He looked at Helena. ”And she walked off. That was the second no.”

”That was not a no,” said Helena. ”That was me being furious.”

”Then what?” said Caitlin. She had abandoned all pretense of reading. Her book was face down in her porridge.

Helena turned back to the stove. She picked up the kettle, and found it empty, and filled it from the jug, and set it back on the heat. Her back was to all of us. But I could see the side of her face, and it had gone very slightly pink.

”Then I walked back,” she said. ”Half an hour later. And I asked him.”

Nobody said anything for a moment.

”He’s the only man who ever asked me for anything,” said Helena, to the kettle, ”and took no for an answer the first time, and went home, and stayed home, and never once came back to ask again. Not even when he wanted to. Especially not when he wanted to.” She was quiet. ”So I married him. Fifty-six years ago. Proud men never understand that part. They think if you stop asking, you lose. They’ve never once in their lives found out what happens if you stop and wait.”

Grandpa Garrick went back to carving his horse. But he was smiling. I don’t think I had ever seen him smile quite like that.

”You can’t get to Friend,” said Carol softly, across the table from me, ”without going through Stop.”

Helena turned around and looked at her.

”Who told you that?”

”Garrick. On the roof. He made it up.”

”Did he.” Helena looked at me, over her spectacles, for a long moment. ”Well. He’s not as stupid as he looks.”

From Helena, that is practically a medal.

* * *

There was a soft knock at the garden door.

Three times. I looked up, expecting Ansel.

It was Iselle. She was standing on the step outside in her gray dress, with the morning behind her, holding the unopened letter from her mother against her chest. She looked as if she had been standing there for some time, working up to it, the way Grandpa had once stood on one side of a market square.

Helena looked at her.

Then she took a bowl down off the shelf, and filled it with porridge, and put a slice of the new bread on the side, and set it down on the end of the table, at the one corner where there was still a little room, between Caitlin and the wall.

”Sit,” said Helena. ”Don’t touch the butter, it’s for the bread. Tea’s in the pot.”

Iselle stood in the doorway for a moment longer.

Then she came in, and sat down, and ate.

* * *

The phoenix came at ten.

We were all still in the kitchen, more or less. Nobody had wanted to leave. It was that kind of morning. Father had gone up to his study and come back down again twenty minutes later without having done anything, and sat on the step by the garden door with a second cup of tea. Seraphina had come down with little Uriah, who had been passed around the table from lap to lap like a parcel until he ended up in Iselle’s, where he sat very still and stared at her with enormous solemn eyes and then grabbed her nose. Iselle had gone rigid. Then, slowly, she had laughed.

It was the first time I ever heard her laugh properly. Out loud. Not a breath. It was a surprisingly loud laugh, a little rusty, as if it hadn’t been used in a while.

Then the light in the garden changed.

It went gold. Not the gold of the sun, which was already up and doing its ordinary work on the pear tree. A deeper gold, warmer, moving, like the light inside a lantern when the wind gets at the flame. Melody’s ears shot straight up. Carol turned toward the window. And out in the inner court, past the garden wall, I heard the Castellan’s voice, level and precise, carrying through the morning:

”Serevan of the aeries. A friend of this house.”

We went out. All of us. Through the garden door and around by the herb beds and out into the inner court, still holding cups and bread and in Melody’s case a slice of butter on the end of a knife.

He was sitting on the rim of the fountain.

I had seen him before. Twice, when I was small. But I had forgotten, the way you forget the color of the sea until you see it again. He was the size of a large eagle, perhaps a little larger, and every feather on him was fire. Not burning. Not consuming anything. Just being fire, the way water is wet, in long sweeping shades of gold and copper and deep, deep red that moved all the time, like flame in a still room. His eyes were black and very bright and very old.

He bowed when he saw Father. Precisely as far as he intended, and not a hair further. That was the thing I remembered most clearly about him from when I was small.

”King Uriah,” said Serevan. His voice was like a fire talking. ”I bring word from the aeries.”

”You’re welcome here,” said Father. ”Always. What word?”

”The black ships,” said Serevan. ”We watched them from the high air. Fifty-seven. They went west past the outer islands, two days ago, and kept going, and did not turn.” He paused. ”We followed them as far as the last of the islands, where the sea goes on with no land in it. Then we turned back. Phoenixes do not cross that sea. Nothing that flies crosses that sea.”

”Thank you,” said Father quietly.

”There is more.” Serevan’s black eyes went to the west, over the castle wall. ”The singing has stopped. We heard it, from the aeries, every night for a month. A cold sound. Every phoenix in the aeries felt it in our feathers. Two of our young ones would not sleep.” He ruffled his wings, once, and a ripple of gold went down them like wind over wheat. ”Three nights ago, it stopped. Tonight we will all sleep. I wanted you to know that the aeries are grateful.”

”It wasn’t us,” said Father. ”It was...”

He stopped. He looked at Carol.

Serevan followed his gaze. He looked at Carol for a long moment. Then he bowed again. To her. A little further, I thought, than he had bowed to Father.

Carol went pink.

* * *

It was while Serevan was bowing that the feather came loose.

Phoenixes molt in late summer. I didn’t know that. Nobody had ever told me. But one long feather from the edge of his wing, a deep red one shading to gold at the tip, about the length of my forearm, drifted loose as he bent his head, and floated down, turning slowly in the air like a leaf, and landed on the flagstones at the foot of the fountain.

Right next to my son.

Little Uriah had got down. I don’t know when. Nobody had been watching him; everybody had been watching the phoenix. He had crawled out of Iselle’s arms and across the court on his hands and knees, the way he does, very fast and very determined, and he was sitting on the flagstones beside the fountain looking at the feather.

It was glowing.

He picked it up.

I moved. So did Seraphina. So did Ignatius, from the other side of the court, faster than any of us, his hands already starting to go gold. Because it was fire, the feather. It was made of fire. I could feel the heat of it from ten feet away.

Little Uriah looked at it very seriously. Turned it over. Considered it, the way he considers everything.

And then he put the end of it in his mouth.

I don’t remember crossing the court. I was just there, on my knees on the flagstones beside him, with Seraphina on his other side and Ignatius right behind her, and all three of us reaching for him at once.

He looked up at us, with the end of a phoenix feather in his mouth, glowing gold between his lips.

He was not burned.

Not at all. Not a mark. The feather was blazing, and his mouth was full of it, and the gold light was coming out between his little teeth and lighting up his whole face from inside, so that he looked like a lantern with a baby in it. And he was perfectly fine. He was chewing on it, thoughtfully, the way he chews on Grandpa Garrick’s horses.

A little puff of smoke came out of his nose.

He sneezed.

Then he took the feather out of his mouth, looked at it, and held it out to Seraphina, very politely, the way he has seen us hand things to each other at the table.

”Jam,” he said.

* * *

Nobody said anything for a long time.

Seraphina took the feather. Her hands were shaking. It didn’t burn her either, but then nothing does. Ignatius had both his hands on little Uriah, one on his chest and one on the back of his head, the gold going into him, feeling for damage. I watched his face. I watched it go from terrified to puzzled to something else entirely.

”Nothing,” Ignatius said. ”There’s nothing wrong with him. Not a blister. Not anything.” He looked up at Seraphina. ”Sera. There’s heat in him. Down underneath. It came up to meet mine.” His voice dropped. ”Like a little banked coal.”

Seraphina looked at her son.

On the rim of the fountain, Serevan had gone completely still. He was looking down at little Uriah with his black, old eyes, and for the first time since I had known him, he did not look as if he knew exactly how far to bow.

”The fire knows him,” said Serevan.

Then he bowed. All the way. Further than he had bowed to Father, or to Carol. His burning head almost touched the flagstones, at the feet of an eleven-month-old boy with smoke still coming out of one nostril.

Then he lifted into the air with a sound like a forge drawing breath, and went up over the castle in a long wheel of gold, toward the aeries, and was gone.

We all knelt there on the flagstones, looking at the sky where he had been.

Behind us, in the open door of the little kitchen, Helena stood with her arms folded and her spoon in one hand.

”That does not go in his mouth again,” she said. ”I don’t care whose fire it is. He’s not eating anything in this house I didn’t cook.”

And from inside the kitchen, behind her, the kettle began to whistle.
