The Greykeep Chronicles

The Castellan had put the silk map on the floor.

Nobody told it to. Nobody had told it anything about the map at all, since Severin left it on the white tablecloth in the great hall and said for your floor. Father had looked at it for a long time that afternoon and then gone out without touching it. Mary had written it down. And then, sometime in the five days since, the black silk had disappeared from the great hall, and nobody had asked where it went.

It was in the map room.

The Castellan had laid it out on the bare gray stone west of the shoals, the place where the floor had always simply stopped. It fit almost exactly. Someone had trimmed the edges, very neatly, so that the silver coastline of Kethra lay flush against the bare stone where Father’s mapmakers had never been, and the little scatter of silver islands lined up with the shoals, and Westmere on the silk sat almost on top of Westmere in the floor.

Almost. Not quite. The silk Westmere was about a hand’s width north of the stone one, as if the two maps did not entirely agree about where we were.

I found it when I went up on the seventh morning, early, to look at the barge marks the way I still did every day out of habit, though the barge had been tied up at the quay for nearly a week. I stood in the doorway and stared. The whole west of the room, which had been gray stone my whole life, was black now, and glittering faintly where the light from the tower windows moved across the silver thread. Rivers. Mountains. Dozens of seed-pearl cities. And on the far side, against the wall, the golden city on its great bay, catching the morning sun.

It made the room feel smaller. As if a wall had been knocked through into a house next door that was much bigger than ours.

The Castellan was standing at the edge of it, looking down.

”You put it there,” I said.

”It was given for the floor,” said the Castellan. ”It is on the floor.”

”Do you think it’s accurate?”

The Castellan was quiet for a moment.

”I think it is the map he wishes us to have,” it said.

Severin asked for a meeting that morning. Not in the great hall. He sent a note, in his elegant slanting hand, to Mary, asking if the King would be willing to receive him somewhere less formal, and leaving the choice of where entirely to us.

Mother read it twice and then laughed, shortly.

”He’s asking us to pick the ground,” she said. ”So that whatever happens, we chose it.”

”Does it matter?” said Father.

”Everything matters with him.” She handed the note back to Mary. ”The map room. Let him stand on his own map and talk to us.”

So at ten o’clock, there were eight of us in the map room at the top of the old west tower, where I had come back from Westmere on my hands and knees, a lifetime ago, not quite four weeks ago. Father. Mother. Adriana. Mary, with her book. Io, because Mother had asked her to come, and had not said why, and Io had not asked. Ansel, because Ansel had simply been there when we arrived, sitting on the windowsill with his hands in his lap, and nobody felt like asking him to leave. The Castellan, by the door. And me.

Seraphina was not there. Nor was Carol. That had been Adriana’s idea, and they had both agreed to it, readily. They’ve answered, Adriana said. They don’t owe him another minute.

Severin came up the stair with Iselle a pace behind him, as always, and stopped in the doorway, and saw the floor.

He stood there for a long moment, looking at the black silk laid out against the gray stone. At the way it fit. At Westmere on the silk sitting a hand’s width north of Westmere on the stone.

”Ah,” he said softly. The same ah he had said to the empty throne. Then he looked at the Castellan, by the door, and inclined his head to it, very slightly. ”Thank you. That was well done.”

The Castellan said nothing.

Iselle came in behind him and stopped too. She did not look at the silk the way he did, taking it all in at once. She looked at one place on it. Low down, toward the southern edge, far from the golden city. A cluster of small seed pearls along a thin silver river, in a valley between two raised knots of mountains.

She looked at it for a long time. Then she looked at the floor in front of her feet, and her face went back to nothing.

I noticed. I don’t think anyone else did. I made a note of where on the silk it was.

* * *

He didn’t sit. There was nowhere to sit, really, in the map room, except the windowsills and the edge of the big chart table, and he did not seem to want either. He stood on the gray stone at the edge of the black silk, with Kethra at his back, and folded his gloved hands in front of him.

”I’ve had four days to think,” he said. ”And a great deal of very good wine, and a conversation on a staircase that I haven’t stopped turning over.” He glanced at me, briefly. ”I’d like to begin again, if Your Majesty will allow it. Smaller.”

”Smaller,” said Father.

”Much smaller.” Severin looked down at the silk under his boots. ”I came here with an offer that was too large. I know that now. I think I knew it on the barge. An alliance of two continents, sealed with two women who had never been asked. It was the kind of offer that only works if the other side is afraid, or greedy, or both. And you’re neither.” He looked up. ”So I’d like to set it aside. All of it. Entirely. And accept yours instead.”

Mary’s pen stopped.

”Mine,” said Father.

”Your answer. In the great hall. For the crown.” Severin’s voice did not change at all. He might have been reading from a ledger. ”We’ll trade with Kethra. Gladly. Your grain for our wool, your silk for our iron, whatever’s fair. Your ships are welcome in Westmere, so long as they move when the harbormaster asks them to. Your people are welcome in our markets. Your children are welcome in our schools.” He paused. ”That’s friendship. That’s what it costs. Nothing.”

It was word for word. I know, because Mary told me afterward, and she had it in her book. Every word, in the right order, with Father’s pause in exactly the right place.

The room was very quiet.

”I’d like to accept that,” said Severin. ”Exactly as given. Nothing added. Nothing taken away.”

Father looked at him for a long moment.

”You’ve got a good memory,” he said at last.

”It’s most of what I’m for,” said Severin.

* * *

He went through it point by point. He was very good at it. Mother said afterward that she had sat through a hundred trade negotiations in her life and never once heard anyone negotiate by simply agreeing to everything, and that it was the most unsettling thing she had ever witnessed, and that she was going to try it on the Lyradon wool merchants at the first opportunity.

Grain from Kethra in lean years, at fair prices, to be agreed by a council of merchants from both sides. Wool and iron going the other way. Kethran silk in the lower market, if the elf weaver would consent to have competition, which Severin very much doubted she would.

The ships.

”The fleet will leave Westmere,” Severin said. ”I sent word to the harbor three days ago, by Tamar Vale’s own courier, that they should weigh anchor whenever the harbormaster next asked. I’m told he asked yesterday morning, very politely, for the fourth time. I’m told this time they listened.” He paused. ”They should be gone within the week.”

”All of them?” said Father.

Severin hesitated. It was very small. A half-breath. But I saw it.

”Most,” he said. ”A few will stay, with your permission. For trade. Someone has to carry the first grain.”

Father looked at Mother. Mother looked at Severin. She said nothing. Mary wrote it down.

”And the last thing,” Severin said. ”Your schools.”

He turned his head, then, for the first time, and looked at Io.

She was sitting on the windowsill beside Ansel, with her hands folded in her lap and her red skirts spread out on the stone, and she had been watching Severin the entire time with the expression of a cat watching a bird on the other side of a window. When he looked at her, she raised one eyebrow.

”Queen Io,” he said. ”The college in Concordia is yours, I’m told. You made it out of a barracks.”

”I did.”

”It’s spoken of in Kethra. Not often. But the people who speak of it speak of it with a kind of longing.” He paused. ”There are no colleges in Kethra that are not His Radiance’s. Every scholar there is his scholar. Every book is his book. Every question that is asked, is asked in his name.” He looked down at the silk. ”I would like to send some of ours to you. A few, to begin with. Young ones. To learn whatever you’ll teach them. And if any of yours ever want to come the other way, they’ll be welcome, and safe, and I’ll see to it personally.”

”An exchange,” said Io.

”An exchange.” Severin turned his head again, very slightly, toward the girl standing a pace behind him. ”And as a sign of good faith, I’d like the first of them to begin now. This autumn. With your permission.”

He did not say her name. He didn’t need to.

Iselle did not move.

I was watching her. I was watching her the way I had been watching her for a week, since the night on the east wall when she held up her open hand. And I saw it. Her right hand, hanging at her side, closed slowly into a fist. Not tight. Just closed. The way you close your hand around something you are afraid of dropping.

Then it opened again.

Her face did nothing at all.

* * *

”Is she a hostage?” said Father.

He said it plainly. The way he says everything.

Severin turned back to him. ”She’s a student.”

”That’s not what I asked.”

”No.” Severin met his eyes. ”It isn’t. And I’ll answer it plainly. She is not a hostage. If you sent her back to Kethra tomorrow, nothing would happen to anyone. No ships would sail. No threats would come. I would be... disappointed. That’s all.” He paused. ”She’s a gift, Your Majesty. Not to you. To her. A chance to learn something that isn’t his.”

”And you just decided that,” said Mother. ”For her.”

There was a short silence.

Then Io stood up off the windowsill.

She did it all at once, the way she does everything, in a rustle of red skirts, and she walked straight across the map room, across the gray stone, and stepped onto the black silk of Kethra without even looking down, and walked across it, over mountains and rivers and seed-pearl cities, until she was standing directly in front of Iselle.

Severin had to step aside to let her through. He did.

Io looked at Iselle. Iselle looked at the floor.

”I’m Io,” said Io. ”I run the college. I made it out of a barracks because I was tired of looking at a building that was only for killing people, and I wanted it to be for something else.” She paused. ”What’s your name?”

Iselle’s eyes came up. Slowly.

”Iselle,” she said.

”Iselle.” Io said it carefully, the way Severin had said Tova’s name in the butchers’ street. As if it were something she’d been handed that she didn’t want to drop. ”Do you want to come to my college, Iselle?”

The whole room went still.

Iselle opened her mouth. Closed it. Her eyes went, very briefly, to Severin, and then away again, as if she had touched something hot.

”Not him,” said Io gently. ”Not what he wants. Not what’s polite. You.” She tilted her head. ”Do you want to?”

It took a long time. Longer than it should have. Longer even than just Iselle had taken, in the blue light of the inner court. I could see her working at it, the way you work at a knot that has been pulled tight for years.

”I don’t know,” Iselle said at last. Very quietly. ”Nobody has ever asked me what I wanted before. Not about anything. I don’t...” She stopped. Her right hand closed again at her side. ”I don’t know how to tell.”

Io nodded slowly.

”That’s all right,” she said. ”That’s the first thing we’ll teach you.”

* * *

In the end, Iselle said yes.

Not then. Not in the map room. Io would not let her. ”Sleep on it,” she said, ”and tell me tomorrow, and if the answer’s no, then it’s no, and nobody in this room gets to be disappointed about it. Do you hear me?” She looked over her shoulder at Severin. ”Nobody.”

”I hear you,” said Severin.

The next morning, Iselle came down to the little kitchen before breakfast. Alone, for the first time. Without Severin, without the leather case. Helena put a cup in front of her without being asked, and she sat at the scrubbed table and held it in both hands and didn’t drink it, and when Io came down at seven, Iselle stood up.

”Will I have a window?” she said.

Io looked at her for a moment.

”Every room in my college has a window,” she said. ”I made sure of it. It cost a fortune. The masons thought I was mad.”

Iselle nodded. Once.

”Yes,” she said. ”Then yes.”

And sat down again, and drank her tea.

* * *

Mary wrote it all down. The grain, the wool, the iron, the silk, the ships leaving Westmere within the week, most of them. The exchange of students. Iselle, of Kethra, to the college at Concordia, this autumn. By her own mouth. She underlined the last four words, the way she had underlined little Uriah’s first word, twice.

Father signed the trade agreement in the south solar that afternoon. Severin signed beneath him, with a plain steel pen, not the silver one. He did not use the closed-hand ring as a seal. He used a plain blob of gray wax, and pressed it with his bare thumb.

Mother watched him do it with her arms folded.

”I don’t like it,” she said, when he had gone.

”Which part?” said Father.

”Any of it. All of it.” She walked to the window and back. ”He came here with the largest offer anyone has ever made this house, and we said no, and he took it like a gentleman. Then he came back with the smallest offer anyone has ever made this house, made entirely of your own words, and we said yes.” She stopped. ”Uriah, I’ve watched you bargain since before the twins were born. Nobody walks away from a no and comes back with less.”

”Maybe he meant it,” said Father. ”Maybe it’s just trade.”

”Maybe,” said Mother. But she didn’t believe it, and neither did he, and neither did I.

* * *

Roderic heard about it at supper.

He was halfway through a plate of Helena’s stew when Caitlin, who hears everything in this house about four minutes after it happens, leaned across the table and said, ”Iselle’s going to Concordia. To the college. In the autumn.”

Roderic put his spoon down.

”My college?”

”It’s Aunt Io’s college,” said Caitlin. ”You just go there.”

”That’s what I said.” He stared at his stew. ”She’s going to be at my college. In my lectures. Walking around my courtyard. With Imogen, and Talia, and Wren, all of them, right there, and she’s going to see me every single day, and she already thinks I’m three too many.”

”She does,” Caitlin agreed.

”She said I was too heavy for a sword.”

”She said the sword was too heavy for you. It’s different.” Caitlin went back to her stew. ”Master Ashby’s put her in his lectures on the Unanswered Shore. I saw the list. She’s going to be sitting in the front row correcting him about her own country. I’m going to bring a cushion.”

Roderic was quiet for a while. Then he picked his spoon back up and turned it over in his fingers, and said, in a completely different voice, much smaller:

”Do you think she’ll want someone to show her where things are?”

Caitlin looked at him for a long moment over the top of her bowl. She has Mother’s eyes. They see a great deal.

”I think,” she said, ”you should ask her.”

* * *

I found Ansel that evening on the east wall. In the nook. My nook, and Seraphina’s. He was sitting in it as if he had always sat there, with his hands folded in his lap, watching the sun go down over the river.

I sat down beside him. He moved over to make room, the way Carol does on the roof.

We sat for a while.

”You were in the map room,” I said finally. ”You didn’t say anything.”

”No.”

”What did you think?”

Ansel was quiet for so long that I thought he wasn’t going to answer. The sun touched the far hills. Somewhere down in the lower market, a bell rang for the end of the day.

”When I was a very young god,” Ansel said, ”younger than you, in the way gods are young, someone came to me in the dark and told me that a lamp was mine if I reached far enough.” He looked at his folded hands. ”I said no. I was very proud of saying no. I thought that was the end of it.”

”It wasn’t.”

”No.” Ansel smiled, a little. ”He came back. A long time later. Not in the dark, that time. In daylight. And he didn’t offer me the lamp. He’d heard my no. He respected it, he said. He only wanted to help me look after the little lamps that were already mine. To share the work. To make it lighter. It was such a small thing to ask.” He turned his head and looked at me. ”By the time I understood what I’d agreed to, I had forgotten my own name. They called me Othellos for a very long time, and I answered to it.”

The sun went down behind the hills. The light went gray along the wall.

”The first asking is always large,” said Ansel quietly. ”So that you’ll say no, and feel strong, and proud, and safe. The second asking never looks like the first. It’s small. It’s reasonable. It’s made out of your own words. It asks for almost nothing at all.” He looked out over the darkening river, toward the west. ”That’s how you know.”

I sat very still beside him.

”Know what?” I said, though I knew.

”That it’s the second time,” said Ansel, ”he’s asked.”
