The Greykeep Chronicles

Seraphina found me on the east wall before the sun was up.

She had little Uriah wrapped in a blanket against her shoulder, asleep, with his mouth open and one fist curled around a fold of her collar. She had two cups of tea in her other hand, balanced one on top of the other in a way that should not have been possible, and she had not slept either. I could tell by the way she sat down. All at once, like a puppet with the strings cut.

She handed me the top cup. We sat with our backs against the warm stone of the nook and watched the sky go from black to gray over the river.

”You know what he’s going to ask,” she said.

”I think so.”

”Everyone thinks so. Nobody’s said it.” She shifted little Uriah higher on her shoulder. He made a small offended noise in his sleep and settled again. ”Two locked boxes. To be opened in her presence. What else would it be?”

I didn’t answer. There was nothing to say that she didn’t already know.

”I’m married,” she said. ”He knows that. He knows the name of our son’s first word. He knows I’m married, Garrick.”

”I know.”

”And he sent me a box anyway.”

The tea in her cup had started to steam harder. I watched it. In the gray light I could see the faint ripple of heat coming off the rim, and the stone under her free hand had gone dark, the way stone goes when it’s been near a fire.

”Sera.”

”I know.” She took a breath. Let it out. The steam settled. ”I know. I’m fine. I’m fine.” She looked down at little Uriah. ”If he asks for me like a thing, I’m going to answer him like a fire. I want you to know that now, so you’re not surprised.”

”Wait for Carol,” I said.

She looked at me.

”Whatever he asks,” I said, ”he’s going to ask Carol first. He’ll have planned it that way. Carol said she’d answer for herself, and she meant it, and she’s been carrying this for weeks. Let her go first. Then you can burn whatever you like.”

Seraphina was quiet for a long time.

”That’s very sensible,” she said finally. ”I hate it.”

”I know.”

”I’ll wait.” She leaned her head on my shoulder. ”I’ll wait for Carol. And then I’m going to burn something.”

”That’s fair.”

Little Uriah woke up, looked at the two of us with grave suspicion, and said, ”Jam.”

”Not today, love,” said Seraphina, very softly. ”Not today.”

Carol came down the north tower stair a little after sunrise.

I felt her before I saw her. The room inside me where she lives had been cold for weeks, the cold of a house with a door left open, and all at once that morning it changed. It didn’t get warmer. It got clear. Like the air after a hard frost, when everything is very sharp and very still and you can see a long way.

She walked across the inner court toward the east wall, in a plain gray dress and the blue shawl, with her hair braided down her back, and she climbed the steps to the nook and stood looking down at us.

Her hands were not pale.

”I know now,” she said.

Seraphina sat up.

Carol sat down on the stone across from us, with her knees drawn up, the way she used to when we were children and she had found out something the grown-ups didn’t want us to know.

”It’s not him,” she said. ”Severin. It was never him. It’s what’s behind him.”

”The god,” said Seraphina.

”Maybe. Something.” Carol looked out over the river. ”Every night since the singing, something has been asking me my name.”

The back of my neck went cold.

”Not out loud,” Carol said. ”Not in words. It’s... I’d be falling asleep, and I’d feel it. Like someone at the foot of the bed, leaning in. Wanting to know. Not who I am. It knows who I am. It wanted me to say it. To give it to it.” She pulled the shawl closer. ”Every night. Over and over. And every night I didn’t answer, and every night it got a little colder, because it didn’t like being told no.”

”Carol,” I said. ”Why didn’t you...”

”Because I didn’t know what it was.” She looked at me. ”I told you. I didn’t know. And I thought if I said it out loud, if I told anyone, I’d be... answering it. Giving it something. Even a little.” She shook her head. ”Name first. That’s the first rule. You don’t do anything until you’ve got the name. And I thought, if it wants my name that badly, then the one thing I can do is not give it.”

Seraphina was staring at her.

”Rysa’s rules,” she said slowly.

”Rysa’s rules.” Carol almost smiled. ”We learned them in the nursery so we’d know how to treat people. Nobody ever told us they work the other way too. If someone won’t ask you properly, you don’t have to answer.”

”And last night?” I said.

”Last night it stopped asking.” Carol turned her face toward the morning. The sun was coming up over the far bank of the river, and the light caught her eyes, and they were very clear. ”I think it’s done asking me in the dark. I think it’s going to ask in the hall instead. Out loud. With everyone watching.” She stood up. ”And that’s fine. That’s better. Because in the hall, I can answer.”

She held out her hand to Seraphina. After a moment, Seraphina took it, and let herself be pulled up, with little Uriah still on her shoulder.

”Come on,” said Carol. ”Helena’s made porridge. If we’re going to refuse an emperor, we should do it on a full stomach.”

* * *

The hall was exactly as it had been the day before.

The long table, the white cloth, a fresh one, with no scorch marks. The empty throne behind Father’s chair. The doors shut and unbarred. Aurethar by the great doors, the Castellan against the west wall, Ansel in his chair beside it. Mary at her little desk with her three pens. Loki by the sideboard with his jug, looking even more virtuous than yesterday, if that was possible.

There was only one difference. At the near end of the table, in front of Father, side by side on the white cloth, sat the two small black-lacquered boxes from the lesser hall.

Mary had brought them in herself, a little before ten, and set them down without a word.

We took our places. Carol on Father’s right, with her hands folded on the cloth in front of her, perfectly steady. Seraphina on his left, with hers in her lap, where nobody could see them. I stood behind Carol. This time she didn’t reach back for my hand. She didn’t need to.

Ansel knocked. Three times. Aurethar opened the doors.

Severin came in, with Iselle a pace behind him. He wore the same fine gray coat. He walked the same unhurried walk down the length of the hall. But when he passed between the third window and the fourth, he did not lift his hand to the wall. He kept both hands at his sides, very deliberately, and I saw him not do it, and I don’t know why that was worse.

He stopped at his chair. He bowed to Father and to the queens. Then he turned, and bowed to Carol, and then to Seraphina, as deeply as he had bowed to anyone.

He did not sit.

”Your Majesties,” he said. ”My ladies. Thank you for coming back.”

”We said we would,” said Carol.

”You did.” He looked at the two boxes on the cloth. ”Before I say anything else, I owe you these. They were sent to be opened in your presence. I’d like to keep that promise. May I?”

Nobody answered for a moment.

Then Carol said, ”You may open them. I’ll look.”

Severin bowed again, slightly. He drew off the black glove from his left hand, finger by finger, and laid it on the table. His bare hand was pale and long-fingered and ordinary, with ink on the side of the middle finger, like a clerk’s. From somewhere inside the glove, where it must have been tucked against his palm all this time, he took a small silver key.

He came around the end of the table. He did not come close to Carol. He stopped an arm’s length from the boxes, as if there were a line drawn on the floor, and reached out, and fitted the key to the first lock, and turned it.

The lid lifted on its silver hinges.

Inside, on a bed of black silk, there was a circlet.

It was very simple. A thin band of pale metal, white rather than silver, so pale that it looked at first like a ring of ice. No ornament. No engraving. Only, at the front, where it would sit on the brow, a single clear stone, about the size of a fingernail, cut so plainly that it almost wasn’t cut at all.

Frost bloomed on the black lacquer around it.

I watched it happen. The moment the lid was open, white feathers of rime crept out from under the circlet across the silk and over the edge of the box and onto the white tablecloth, spreading in a little ring, as if the box had been opened in the middle of winter. The air above the table went cold. I felt it on my face.

I felt it in the room inside me where Carol lives, too. That same cold. The cold of the north stair, and the map-room floor, and her pale fingertips. The cold of something leaning in at the foot of the bed in the dark, asking.

Carol looked at the circlet.

She did not touch it. She did not lean toward it or away from it. She only looked at it, the way you would look at a letter written in a language you had finally learned to read, and her face did not change at all.

”Thank you,” she said. ”I see it.”

Severin inclined his head. Then he moved down the table, past Father’s chair, to the second box, in front of Seraphina.

The key turned. The lid lifted.

It was a collar.

I don’t know what else to call it. The Kethrans may have a prettier word. It was a torc of black iron, open at the front, made to slide around a throat and rest on the collarbones, and it was beautiful. I want to be honest about that. It was the most beautiful piece of ironwork I have ever seen, finer than anything Surtr makes, and Surtr is the best smith in the world. Every inch of it was worked in fine raised script. Curling, angular letters, deeply cut, running around the whole circle of it from one open end to the other.

I knew them.

I had copied them, crooked, on Aurethar’s back, with the wind tearing at the pages. I had watched Eleanor bend over them with her nose almost touching the paper. That was a binding stroke. That was a threshold mark. That was the hook she had invented to tie a ward into running water.

Backward.

It was ward-writing. It was Eleanor’s ward-writing, read from the wrong side of the door, cut into a collar made to fit my wife’s throat.

The room got very small.

I don’t remember moving. I remember that I was standing behind Carol’s chair, and then I wasn’t, I was a step to the side of it, and the air in front of me had started to fold. I could feel it go, the way you feel a sneeze coming. The space between me and Severin Dask was about nine feet, and I could have closed it without taking a step, and I wanted to, more than I have ever wanted anything.

Carol’s hand came back and closed on my wrist.

Cold. Very cold. Very steady.

She didn’t look at me. She didn’t say anything. She just held on.

The fold went out of the air. I stood still.

Across the table, Seraphina was looking down at the open box. Her hands were still in her lap. Her face was white and perfectly calm, and the white cloth in front of her had begun, very faintly, to brown.

”Thank you,” she said, in a voice I had never heard her use. ”I see it.”

Severin looked at her for a moment longer. Then he closed neither box. He left them open on the cloth, the circlet blooming frost and the collar lying black and quiet, and went back around the end of the table to his place, and drew his glove back on, finger by finger.

He still did not sit.

Iselle had not moved the whole time. She was standing exactly where she had stood yesterday, one pace behind his chair and a little to the left. But I saw her look at the collar. Just once. Quickly, the way she had glanced at the Castellan in the gateway.

Then she looked at the floor.

* * *

”I have a letter,” Severin said.

Iselle opened the leather case. She took out a single sheet of folded black paper, sealed with dark red wax, and handed it to him. He did not break the seal. He held the letter out across the table, toward Father, flat on his gloved palm.

”It’s in his own hand,” he said. ”His Radiance does not often write his own letters. He wrote this one three times before he was satisfied. I was there. I’d like to read it to you, if you’ll permit me, because I know how he means the words to sound. But if you’d rather read it yourself, it’s yours.”

Father looked at the letter for a long moment.

”Read it,” he said.

Severin broke the seal.

The paper was black, like the first letter, and the writing on it was silver. But it was not Severin’s elegant, slanting hand. It was smaller, and heavier, and very upright, the letters pressed so hard into the paper that I could see the ridges they made from where I stood. There was no common-tongue translation underneath. Severin did not need one.

He read.

”To Uriah Grey, King of Greykeep, Keeper of the Accord.

”I am told that you once had nothing. That you came into a ruined house with a sword and a hammer and two servants and three onions, and made it into a kingdom. I am told you did it by asking. That you asked the villages what they needed before you told them what you wanted. That you asked the elves, and the dwarves, and the wolves, and the old gods who had forgotten what they were.

”I understand that. I did the same. We are, I think, the only two men in the world who have.

”So I will ask you plainly, as one asker to another.

”I offer you alliance. Kethra and Greykeep, and every kingdom of your Accord, bound as one. My grain in your lean years. My fleets on your coasts, so that nothing comes across the sea against you that I have not first turned back. My roads joined to your roads, and my rivers to your rivers. And your gates, which I have heard so much about, carried across the water, so that a child in my poorest river town may step through an arch and stand in your market, and buy honest meat from a wolf. I have wanted to see that for a long time.

”In return I ask two things.

”I ask for the Lady Carol, in whom lightning sleeps, to be my Empress. To sit beside me in the golden city, and wear the crown I have sent her, and be held, as everything in Kethra is held, safely and forever. I have never had an Empress. I have never wanted one. I want her.

”And I ask for the Lady Seraphina, who carries the First Flame, to come to Kethra as my flame-consort. The fire she carries is the oldest fire in the world. It should not be kept in a small house. It should burn at the heart of an empire, where it will be honored and tended and never go out.

”I know she is married. I know she has a son. In Kethra, a flame-consort is not a wife. She keeps a fire. Her husband may visit her, and her son may visit her, as often as they like. They will want for nothing.

”This is the first time I have asked.

”Malachar Ostrane. Who Holds.”

Severin lowered the letter.

Nobody moved.

I have tried, since, to remember what the hall sounded like in that moment, and I can’t, because it didn’t sound like anything. There was no sound. Not the chandelier, not the windows, not breathing. Loki, by the sideboard, had gone so still that he looked painted onto the wall. On the west wall, Ansel had closed his eyes. Lexander’s hand had gone flat on the table, and the wood under it had cracked, a long straight split, without a sound. Io’s fingers were wrapped around his wrist so hard her knuckles had gone white.

Mother was looking at Severin as if she were memorizing him.

Adriana was looking at Carol.

And at the foot of the table, at her little desk, Mary had stopped writing.

I saw it. I was looking right at her. She had been writing the whole time, as she always writes, her pen moving steadily across the page of her book, catching every word. Through the gifts and the circlet and the collar. Through the first half of the letter.

At I want her, the pen had slowed.

At her husband may visit, it had stopped.

It was still touching the page, in the middle of a word. A small blot of ink was spreading out from under the nib, very slowly, into the paper. Mary was looking down at it. She did not seem to see it.

Then she lifted the pen off the page. Carefully. And laid it down beside the book, next to the other two, in a neat row.

And folded her hands on the desk.

I have known Mary my whole life. I have never once seen her stop writing. Not at weddings, not at funerals. Not at the birth of my son, not on the night of the stream, when the whole world came apart and put itself back together in the space of an hour. She wrote through all of it, in her small neat hand, because that was what she had promised Father the day he walked through the ruined gate of Greykeep with a sword and a hammer: that whatever happened in this house, someone would write it down, so it would never be lost.

She sat at her desk, with her hands folded and her pen laid down, and looked at Severin Dask.

She did not write a word.

Severin saw it. I watched him see it. He looked at the pen, and the blot of ink, and the folded hands, and for the first time since he had stepped off the barge something moved behind his face that he had not put there on purpose. I don’t know what it was. I’m not sure he did.

Then he folded the black letter in half again, and laid it on the white cloth beside the open boxes.

”His Radiance asks once,” he said quietly. ”This is the first time.”

He looked at Father. Then at Carol. Then at Seraphina.

”I’ll wait,” he said, ”for your answer.”

The circlet bloomed frost on the cloth. The collar lay black and quiet in its silk. The throne sat empty behind my father’s back, with the sun across it.

And the whole hall turned, slowly, to look at my sister.
