The Greykeep Chronicles

”It isn’t her writing,” said Caitlin.

She didn’t look up when she said it. She was bent over her little desk in the corner of Mary’s office with every lamp in the room pulled close around her, so that the light fell in a bright pool on the papers and left the rest of the room in shadow. Her hair had come out of its pins hours ago. There was ink on her chin, and on her wrist, and a long smudge of it down one cheek where she’d pushed her hair back with a wet pen.

I pulled Mary’s chair over and sat down beside her.

”Show me,” I said.

She showed me.

* * *

”Start with the note,” said Caitlin. ”Because that’s what everyone’s looking at.”

It lay in the middle of the desk. A scrap of cheap paper, the size of my palm, folded twice. On the outside, the blot of plain gray wax, and in it, the whorls of a thumb. On the inside, one line, in the common tongue, in a thin, careful, slanting hand.

Ask the Kethran girl what she keeps under her bed.

”Common tongue,” said Caitlin. ”Not Kethran. That’s the first thing everyone noticed, and they thought it meant something. They thought it meant it couldn’t be a Kethran who wrote it, because a Kethran would write in Kethran. Or they thought it meant it had to be a Kethran, pretending not to be.” She shook her head. ”It doesn’t mean either. Iselle writes the common tongue perfectly well. So does Master Ostel. So does half the Kethran house. The language doesn’t tell you anything.”

”Then what does?”

”The hand.” She put her finger beside the first word, not touching it. ”Everyone learns their letters one way first. However many scripts you learn after, your hand remembers the first one. It’s like an accent. You can speak another language perfectly, but somewhere in it, if you listen, you can hear where you come from.” She looked at me. ”Iselle learned Kethran first. At the kitchen table. From the green primer. And Kethran runs the other way from ours. Right to left. Every child in Kethra learns to start every letter from the right-hand side and pull the pen toward themselves.”

She slid a sheet of paper across from her pile. I knew it. It was a page of Iselle’s lecture notes, in the common tongue. Her ordinary, everyday, careful hand.

”Look at her letters,” said Caitlin. ”Look at the crossbars. On the t, on the f, on the e. Look where the ink’s heaviest.”

I looked. And saw it. Every crossbar was heavier on the right-hand end than the left. A tiny blot, a tiny thickening, where the pen had come down and started its stroke, and then thinned out as it pulled left. Every single one. All the way down the page.

”She starts them from the right,” I said.

”She starts everything from the right. She can’t help it. Nobody who learned Kethran first can help it. Master Ostel does it. The clerks do it. I checked every hand in that book.” Caitlin tapped the green letter-book. ”Every Kethran in the house starts from the right.”

She pushed the note back into the light.

”Now look at that.”

I looked.

Every crossbar on the note was heavy on the left.

* * *

”So it wasn’t a Kethran,” I said slowly.

”I didn’t say that.” Caitlin pulled the letter-book toward her and opened it to a page she’d marked with a strip of paper. ”I said it wasn’t Iselle. I said whoever wrote that note learned their letters the way we learn them. Left to right. Like someone from the kingdoms.” She paused. ”Or like someone from Kethra who was taught to write late. As a grown man. By someone from this side of the sea.”

She turned the book around.

Every page of the letter-book had five columns. Caitlin had explained them to me on the way up from the gate, the night before, too tired to stop talking. The date. The sender. The destination. The seal. And a fifth, narrow one, at the very edge of the page, headed with a single Kethran word I’d sounded out on the hill: door. Whoever saw the letter out of the house wrote their mark in it. Most nights it was one of the clerks. Some nights it was Master Ostel himself.

Last night, and the night before, and eleven of the last fourteen nights, the mark in the door column was the same.

Three small Kethran letters. O. D. O.

And before them, very small, almost hidden in the gutter of the page, a mark that wasn’t a letter at all.

”Every Kethran writes Who Holds before their name,” said Caitlin quietly. ”Every child. Fifty times at the kitchen table before anyone lets them write their own. Iselle does it without thinking. Look.” She turned back a page and put her finger beside Iselle’s signature. The long hook, the double kink, the short hard stroke, and then Iselle. ”Master Ostel does it. Both clerks do it. Every letter in this book that’s signed by a Kethran starts with Who Holds.”

She turned forward again. To Odo’s mark.

”He doesn’t.”

I leaned close. The mark before Odo’s name was tiny. You’d think it was a blot. You’d think the pen had caught. But it wasn’t. Under the lamp, it was two small loops of ink, one inside the other, joined at one side.

A link of chain.

”I thought it was a blot too,” said Caitlin. ”For hours. And then I thought, nobody blots the same way eleven times.” Her voice was very steady. ”Then I got the mirror.”

She held the hand mirror up beside the letter-book, angled so that the door column showed in the glass, backward. Then she held it beside the note.

The note was in the common tongue. But at the very top of it, above the first word, in the corner where you’d never look, there was a tiny mark. I’d seen it. Everyone had seen it. Everyone had thought it was where the pen had first touched the paper.

Two small loops of ink. One inside the other. Joined at one side.

”Same pen,” said Caitlin. ”Same ink. Same left-handed crossbars on the three letters of his name, if you look. Same pressure. And the same mark instead of Who Holds. A man who was taught to write as a grown man, by someone from our side of the sea, and who doesn’t sign his name under the Emperor’s title like every other Kethran alive.” She put the mirror down. ”Because he doesn’t belong to the Emperor. He belongs to the chain.”

I sat back in Mary’s chair.

”Odo,” I said.

”Odo.” Caitlin’s hands had started to shake, now that she’d said it. She put them flat on the desk. ”And the thumb in the wax on the note is twice the size of Iselle’s. I measured it against the print on the ring of the Ember Room door, the one Ignatius kept. They’re the same. They’re a man’s.” She swallowed. ”And he keeps the door. Of the Kethran house. He saw every letter Iselle ever sent. He knew when she came and when she left and which way she walked. He saw her to the step. He watched her as far as the turn.” Her voice cracked. ”He’d have known which road. He’d have known she’d pass the kitchen gate. Alone. At half past eight. In a gray dress, with dark hair, like half the women in Concordia. All he needed was the scarf.”

”But the boy saw a woman,” I said.

”The boy saw a scarf.” Caitlin pulled her blue book over and found the page. ”I went down and talked to Tam myself, before I came home. I asked him what her face was like. He couldn’t tell me. Captain Hesk asked him three times, and he couldn’t tell him either. He remembered the scarf, and the gray dress, and the dark hair, and the voice. Long vowels. Excuse me.” She looked up. ”He didn’t remember her face at all. Not one thing about it. He said it was the kind of face you forget while you’re still looking at it.”

I’d said that. Almost word for word. In the narrow hall of the Kethran house, about a man standing against the wall like a coat-stand.

And I thought of a yard of barrels on the river quay in Havenreach, where my eyes had slid off a third barrel onto a gull, and a cat, and anything else at all.

She turned and looked at me. Her eyes were red to the rims.

”I’ve got it, Garrick,” she said. ”I’ve got it with sources.”

* * *

She showed it to all of them at seven the next morning, in the small council room in Concordia, with the door shut but not locked.

Lexander. Io. My father, who’d come back from Westmere a little before dawn, by the fast way, and left a ring of scorch marks on the flagstones of our lower hall that Mary had already entered in a ledger under Damages, royal, recurring. Captain Hesk by the door. Ignatius. Me.

And Iselle, at the foot of the table, with Roderic in the chair beside her, because he’d asked if he could sit there and she’d said yes.

Caitlin went through it all. The crossbars. The heavy right-hand ends on every Kethran hand in the green book, and the heavy left-hand ends on the note. The door column. Eleven nights out of fourteen. The tiny mark that wasn’t Who Holds. The mirror. The two thumbprints in gray wax, one from the note and one from the iron ring of the Ember Room door, laid side by side on a clean sheet of paper, the same size, the same whorls, twice as broad as the small print on Iselle’s letter. A kitchen boy who couldn’t remember a face.

She didn’t hurry. She didn’t skip anything. She showed every page, and said how she knew, and where she’d got it, and what it didn’t prove as well as what it did. When she’d finished, she closed her blue book and put both hands flat on the cover and sat back.

Nobody said anything for a while.

Lexander picked up the note and the mirror and looked at the little chain-link mark for a long time with his one eye. Then he put them down and looked at Caitlin.

”Io said you correct things,” he said.

”Yes, sir.”

”She didn’t say you’d correct a king.” He turned and looked down the table at Iselle. His face changed. ”I’m sorry,” he said. ”I asked you as a king. I should have asked you as a man first, and gone on asking that way. I’m sorry I didn’t.”

Iselle looked at him for a long moment.

”You asked,” she said. ”That’s more than I’m used to.”

”It wasn’t enough.” Lexander turned to Hesk. ”Captain. The prisoner is released.”

”She was never a prisoner, sir,” said Hesk gruffly, from the door. ”The young prince was very clear about that.”

Roderic went pink to the ears.

* * *

”Odo,” said my father.

He hadn’t said anything until then. He’d sat through the whole of Caitlin’s proof with his hands folded on the table and his eyes on the little chain-link mark, and the windows behind him had very slowly gone white at the edges.

”I saw the Lockwarden last night,” he said. ”At Westmere. I stood on the harbor wall for two hours, after dark, and looked at him.” He was quiet for a moment. ”He looked back. He didn’t move. He didn’t ask anything. Neither did I.” He turned his cup on the table. ”But there’s a link on his wrist, Lexander. One small black link of iron. And when I looked at it, I knew I’d seen the shape before.” He nodded at the note. ”That’s it. That’s the mark. That’s the chain.”

Io had gone very pale.

”Then whoever this Odo is,” she said slowly, ”he isn’t Severin’s servant. Not really. Severin brought him. But he doesn’t serve Severin.”

”He serves the chain,” said Caitlin quietly. ”He doesn’t even write the Emperor’s title. He writes theirs.”

”And he has the books,” said Lexander. His hand had gone to the axe that wasn’t there. ”Nine of them. Four hundred years. In a narrow house at the bottom of the salt steps.” He stood up. ”Hesk. Twenty men. Now.”

”No,” said my father.

Everyone looked at him.

”Not twenty men,” he said. ”Not shouting. Not boots on the stair.” He stood up too, slowly. ”A man like that answers a question by opening a door, Lexander. You go in there with twenty men and start asking where the books are, and I promise you he’ll answer. And you won’t like what comes through.” He looked at Lexander. ”We go quietly. A few of us. The ones who can stand in a doorway and not be moved. And we don’t ask him anything at all until we’ve got him somewhere with no doors to open.”

Lexander looked at him for a long moment.

”You’ve done this before,” he said.

”I’ve stood in front of a door that wanted to be opened,” said my father. ”When I was a good deal younger than Garrick.” He didn’t say anything else about it. He didn’t need to. Everyone in that room had grown up on the story of Varrick’s door.

”Who, then?” said Io.

Before my father could answer, there was a sound from the far side of the palace. Not the fire bell. A horn. A long, clear, bright note, rising, the kind you blow on a road to tell a gate you’re coming and you’re in a hurry. It came again, closer. Then a clatter of hooves in the outer court, and shouting, and running feet.

Io was on her feet before the second note finished.

”That’s the south road,” she said. ”That’s the embassy horn.” She looked at Lexander, and her face was suddenly so full of something that I had to look away. ”That’s Thora.”

* * *

There were three of them in the outer court, on three horses so lathered they were steaming in the cold morning air.

The first one down was Aunt Lysandra. Lexander’s younger sister, with his dark hair and none of his size, in a riding coat so caked with road dust you couldn’t tell what color it had started. She’s sat on the Council for twenty years, in the seat Io gave up the year Thora was born, and she has a way of asking questions in Council that makes old gods look at each other in alarm. When Carol and I were very small, she used to let us ride on her feet. She swung down off her horse and handed the reins to a groom and said, ”Water, oats, a blanket, and don’t let him lie down yet,” without looking at either of them, and then looked straight across the court at her brother.

”We came as fast as we could,” she said. ”Which was faster than you’d think.”

Behind her, a tall young man slid off a gray horse with a kind of tired grace, and pushed his hood back.

I’d only met Baldr a handful of times in my life. He doesn’t come north often. He’s been traveling with the Council’s embassies since before I was born, keeping them safe on the roads, and when he does come home to Concordia he stays in the old rooms over the stables and plays chess with Lisbeth and leaves again before anyone’s quite noticed he’s arrived. But you don’t forget him. Nobody does. He’s pale-haired, so pale it’s almost gold in the sun, with eyes as blue as a winter sky, and he carries himself the way Lexander does, like someone who was a king once, in a life nobody else remembers. Thor’s brother. Loki’s brother. Odin’s son, a very long time ago, in the old stories.

When he pushed back his hood, the morning got brighter. I don’t know how else to put it. The shadows in the corners of the outer court got shorter. The frost on the cobbles started, very gently, to melt.

And I felt it come into me.

Not his. Not yet. Just the edge of it, the way it always comes, the way the cold comes in through an open door. A warmth like the first real sun of spring. A light that didn’t burn anything, just showed it. I didn’t ask for it. I never do, for the first touch. It just arrives. That’s the part of what Carol and I are that we never get to choose.

I put it away, somewhere at the back of me, and didn’t use it. You don’t use what you haven’t asked for. That part, we do get to choose.

Baldr turned and held up his arms to the third rider, still sitting on her horse.

She didn’t take them. She slid down on her own, the way she’d always insisted on doing everything on her own, since she could walk. Small. Smaller than I remembered. Very blonde, with her hair in a long braid that had half come undone on the road, and road dust on her face, and a big black raven sitting on her shoulder as if it had always lived there.

She landed on the cobbles, and turned around, and looked at us all on the steps.

She had her mother’s eyes. I’d forgotten how much.

”Thora,” said Io.

And then Io was down the steps and across the court, and her arms were around her youngest daughter so tightly that the raven had to take off and flap up onto the edge of the well, complaining. And Lexander was right behind her, and then the three of them were standing in the middle of the outer court of Concordia with the horses steaming around them, holding on to each other and not saying anything at all.

Lysandra came up the steps and stood beside me while they did it. She smelled of horse and road and woodsmoke.

”Hello, Garrick,” she said. ”You’ve grown.”

”I’m twenty-three, Aunt Lysandra.”

”Mm. You were three last time I looked.” She watched her brother’s family for a moment. ”We were already on the road when the raven found us. Did you know? Three days north of the southern gate. Riding as hard as the horses would let us.”

”Why?”

”Ask her,” said Lysandra. ”She woke me up four nights ago, in the middle of the night, in an inn in Varrowmouth. Sitting bolt upright in the bed. She said, Someone’s opened Mother’s room. And then she got dressed and went down to the stable and started saddling her horse, and Baldr and I had to run after her in our nightclothes.” She shook her head. ”She didn’t have a dream. She doesn’t dream, that one. She just knows. She knew before it happened.” She looked at me sideways. ”Four nights ago, Garrick. The fire was two nights ago.”

I didn’t say anything.

* * *

Thora let go of her mother at last. She stepped back, and wiped her face with the back of a dusty hand, and looked up the steps.

Not at Lexander. Not at my father, standing in the doorway with the frost still on the windows behind him. At me.

Her eyes went very still. Not unfocused. The opposite. Focused, past me, through me, on something a long way off, the way you’d look at a ship on the horizon. I’d seen it once before, when she was eight, sitting in the middle of the palace courtyard, just before she lifted her hand and pointed at the stables.

”Garrick,” she said. ”There’s a man in a gray coat.”

The court went quiet.

”He’s in a narrow house by the water. With a green door.” Her voice was very calm, the way her mother’s goes calm. ”He’s putting something in a bag. Books. Nine of them. Old. Heavy. One of them is missing its clasps.” She tilted her head, as if listening to something far away. ”He’s buttoning his coat. He knows someone found his name. Someone read it in a mirror.” Her eyes didn’t leave mine. ”He’s going to the gate. The big one. The one to Havenreach. He thinks if he can get through it before anyone thinks to ask him anything, he’ll be gone.”

Behind me, I heard Caitlin, who’d come out onto the steps with her blue book under her arm, draw in her breath.

”How long?” said my father.

Thora blinked. Her eyes came back. She looked at my father as if she’d only just noticed he was there, and smiled, a little tiredly.

”Hello, Uncle Uriah,” she said. ”He’s on the step now. He’s going up the lane. If you want him, you’ll have to be faster than a horse.”

My father was already moving.

”I’m faster than a horse,” he said.

The lightning went up off the steps of the palace and across the roofs of Concordia toward the gate square in a single white-gold line, and the thunder came after it so loud that every one of the three exhausted horses in the court reared at once, and Baldr caught two of them by the bridles without seeming to try.

I looked at Thora. She looked at me.

”So am I,” I said.

And I folded.
