The Greykeep Chronicles

The barge came around the bend at a quarter past ten, and the whole of Havenreach was waiting for it.

Nobody had told them to. Nobody had needed to. Fifteen days is a long time for a gray awning to come up a river, and every lockkeeper and fisherman and bargeman between here and the coast had seen it pass, and every one of them had a cousin in the lower market. By the time the barge was three days out, there was a betting pool at the Lantern and Oar on what the envoy would look like. By the time it was one day out, Sorley Pike had told his story about the black sails so many times that people had started finishing his sentences for him.

So when it came, they were there. Lining the quay. Leaning out of upstairs windows. Sitting on the warehouse roofs with their legs dangling. Ansgar’s three daughters had climbed the crane by the salt sheds, and Ansgar was standing at the bottom of it with his arms folded, pretending he had not noticed.

The household had argued about who should go down to meet it.

Father could not. A king does not wait on a quay for a guest, Mary said, any more than a host waits in the road for someone coming to dinner. Mother would not, because Mother had decided that the first time Severin Dask saw her would be in the great hall, at the table, at a time of her choosing. Carol and Seraphina were not to go anywhere near the water.

In the end it was me, and Mary, and Ansel.

Me, because I had been on the beach at Westmere, and he had already seen my face. Mary, because Mary goes to everything that will need to be written down. And Ansel, because Ansel had asked.

”I would like to see him arrive,” he had said, at breakfast, in his mild way. ”I would like to see how he steps off a boat.”

Nobody had asked him why. With Ansel, you learn not to. He will tell you eventually, usually in the middle of something else, and it will turn out to have been important.

The barge was smaller close up than it had looked from Aurethar’s back. Old and broad and patched, low in the water, with the salt of a hundred trips worked so deep into the planks that they had gone the color of bone. The bargemaster stood at the long sweep at the stern, a stout red-faced woman I half recognized from the salt sheds, and she looked like someone who had been paid double and was now wondering whether it had been enough.

The gray awning was stretched across the middle of the deck.

Under it, a man was sitting in a canvas chair with a book open on his knee.

He did not look up as the barge came in. He did not look up as the crew threw the lines and the dockhands caught them, or as the hull bumped and groaned against the quay timbers, or as the gangplank went down with a bang. He finished his page. Then he closed the book on one gloved finger to keep his place, and stood, and stepped out from under the awning into the sun.

The whole quay went quiet.

I had seen him before. On the beach at Westmere, at dusk, with his brass teapot and his two silent oarsmen. I thought I remembered him well. But I had been tired then, and cold, and frightened in a way I had not wanted to admit, and I think I had made him larger in my memory than he was.

He wasn’t large at all. That was the first thing. He was a lean, ordinary-sized man in a long plain gray coat, with dark hair going gray at the temples and a narrow, tired, clever face. Black gloves. And over the glove on his right hand, that ring: dark gold, heavy, shaped like a fist.

He looked like a scholar. Like someone’s favorite uncle, the one who brings you books instead of toys and then asks you what you thought of them.

He looked up at the crowd on the quay. At the people on the roofs, and the girls on the crane, and the children who had been lifted onto their fathers’ shoulders. He smiled, and it was a good smile. It reached his eyes. It looked as if he were genuinely pleased to see them all.

Then he looked at me.

”Prince Garrick,” he said. ”You came down to meet me. That’s kind.”

The accent was the same. Long vowels, soft edges, as if every word had been sanded smooth before he let it out.

”Envoy,” I said. ”Welcome to Havenreach.”

”Thank you.” He came down the gangplank. He did not hurry and he did not hesitate. When his boot touched the quay he paused, very briefly, and looked down at the planks under his feet, the way you might look at the threshold of a house you had been told about for years and never seen.

Then he looked up again, and his eyes went past me, to Mary.

”And Mistress Mary,” he said. ”Who writes the letters.” He bowed. A short, precise bow, from the waist, with one hand flat against his chest. ”Your reply was perfect. I have it still. I read it most evenings.”

Mary inclined her head about a quarter of an inch. Her book was already open in the crook of her arm. She did not write anything. I think that was the point.

Then he turned to Ansel.

And stopped.

It was very small. If I had not been watching for it, I would never have seen it. A hitch, no more than half a breath, in the smooth unfolding of the man. His eyes went to Ansel’s face, plain and kind and unremarkable, the face of a man who could be anyone’s gardener, and something in them sharpened and went still.

”I don’t believe we’ve met,” Severin said.

”No,” said Ansel pleasantly. ”We haven’t.”

He stepped forward to the end of the gangplank. He lifted one hand and rapped on the barge’s old rail with his knuckles.

Three times.

The sound was small and dry. It carried across the whole silent quay.

”Severin Dask,” Ansel said, ”envoy of Kethra, is come to Havenreach, and is a guest of this house.”

That was all. He lowered his hand. He smiled, the same mild smile he always smiles, and stepped back beside Mary.

Severin looked at him for a long moment.

”Thank you,” he said, at last. And then, more quietly, to no one in particular, ”So that’s how it’s done here.”

* * *

He had not come alone.

The two oarsmen from the beach had come upriver with him. They stood at the bow, side by side, in gray, with their hands at their sides. They had not moved when the barge docked. They did not move now. Not to help with the lines, not to carry anything, not to step ashore. I watched them for a long time while the dockhands unloaded, and I am not sure I ever saw either of them blink.

And there was a girl.

She came out from behind the awning after Severin had stepped ashore, carrying a long flat leather case under one arm and a small traveling bag in the other hand. She was younger than me. Nineteen, maybe, or twenty. Dark hair cut short and straight at the jaw. A plain gray dress, the same gray as Severin’s coat, and a face that was very carefully doing nothing at all.

She came down the gangplank without looking at the crowd. When she reached the quay, she stood one pace behind Severin and a little to his left, and waited.

”Ah,” said Severin, without turning around. ”Forgive me. This is Iselle. She keeps my papers, and corrects my spelling, and tells me when I’ve talked for too long.”

”He’s talked for too long,” said Iselle.

Her voice was low, and the accent was there, but softer than his. She did not smile when she said it. Neither did he. But something passed between them that I could not read, the way I cannot read what passes between Mother and Adriana.

Then she lifted her eyes, for the first time, and looked past all of us. Past the quay and the crowd and the market. Up the hill, to the castle.

To the north tower.

She looked at it for a long moment. Then she looked down again, and her face went back to nothing.

* * *

Mary had brought a carriage. He declined it.

”I’ve been sitting for fifteen days,” he said. ”If you’ll permit me, I’d like to walk. I’ve heard a great deal about your market.”

From whom, I wanted to ask, and didn’t.

So we walked. Up from the quay, through the bottom of the lower market, where the butchers’ street runs down to the drains and the cobbles are always wet. Mary on his left with her book. Ansel a pace behind, his hands in his pockets, looking at nothing in particular. Iselle a pace behind Severin, with her leather case. Me on his right, where I could see his face.

Behind us came the porters with the chests. Eight of them, long and low and black-lacquered, each one sealed with a dab of dark red wax pressed with that closed hand. The dockhands had wanted to know if they should load them onto a cart. Severin had said that if the porters were willing, he would rather they were carried, and he would pay for the carrying, and he did, in good silver, before anyone had lifted a thing.

The oarsmen did not come. When I looked back from the top of the quay steps, they were still standing at the bow of the barge, side by side, exactly as they had been.

The crowd came with us. Not close. Never close. But they drifted along the edges of the street, in doorways and at stall fronts, and they watched.

And Severin watched them back.

That was the thing I noticed first, and kept noticing all the way up the hill. He looked at everything. Not the way a visitor looks, taking it all in at once. The way Eleanor looks at a wall. One thing at a time, carefully, as if he meant to remember it later.

At the bottom of the butchers’ street, he stopped in front of Ansgar’s stall.

Ansgar had come down off the crane by then, and was behind his counter in his apron, with his three daughters lined up beside him in descending order of height. He is very large, and very hairy even in his human shape, and he has a way of standing behind that counter that makes it clear the counter is the only thing between you and a great deal of werewolf.

”Master Ansgar,” said Severin. ”And daughters.”

My skin went tight across my shoulders. Then I saw his eyes go up, very briefly, to the painted sign above the stall. ANSGAR & DAUGHTERS, MEAT HONEST AND FAIR, in red letters a foot high. And I felt foolish, and then I felt worse, because I understood that he had meant me to feel exactly that. To flinch, and then to see the sign, and then to wonder how many of the other things he knew were just as simple.

”Envoy,” said Ansgar, in a voice like gravel going down a chute.

”Your stall was the first one I heard about,” Severin said. ”In Westmere. A bargeman told me that the King of Greykeep buys his meat from a werewolf, and that the queen’s mother came down here herself to make sure it would be worth his while.” He smiled. ”I thought that was the most interesting thing anyone had told me about this kingdom. I wanted to see it for myself.”

Ansgar did not smile back. But something in his shoulders eased, just slightly.

”It’s good meat,” he said.

”I don’t doubt it.”

The smallest of the three daughters, who is perhaps seven, leaned out from behind her father’s arm and looked up at Severin with enormous yellow eyes.

”Are you the bad man from the black ships?” she said.

Ansgar put a hand on her head. Her sisters went rigid. The whole street went quiet.

Severin crouched down. Not all the way, so that he was looking up at her, which is the trick that grown-ups do when they want to seem harmless. Just enough that his eyes were level with hers, across the counter.

”May I ask your name first?” he said.

She blinked. ”Tova.”

”Thank you, Tova.” He said it carefully, as if it were something she had handed him that he did not want to drop. ”I came on a salt barge. Not a black ship. Do I look bad to you?”

She studied him with a seven-year-old’s ruthlessness.

”You look gray,” she said.

”I am gray,” Severin agreed. ”It’s very restful. You should try it.” He stood up again, and bowed to Ansgar, and moved on, and the street started breathing again.

I walked beside him and turned that over in my head.

May I ask your name first.

He did it all the way up the hill. With the elf weaver at her silk stall, where he admired the Fourth Canal blue and asked what it was called and who had dyed it, and offered twice the price, and when she refused the extra, he bowed and paid what she asked and did not try again. With the dwarf smith, and the boy selling roasted chestnuts, and the old woman on the corner of Tanner’s Row who sells nothing at all and just sits there watching. Every single time. He asked their names before he asked anything else.

Rysa taught us that. In the nursery. Name. Want. Permission. You ask a person’s name, and you ask what they want, and you ask if you may, and only then do you do anything at all. I have known those rules my whole life. I have never once in my life seen a stranger follow them so perfectly.

It should have made me trust him.

It didn’t. It made me feel as if someone had read the household book over my shoulder.

The Castellan was in the gateway.

It stood exactly in the middle of the arch, with its metal hands folded in front of it, its gray head level, its blank gray face turned down the road toward us. It did not move as we came up the last stretch of the hill. It did not move as the porters set the chests down with grunts of relief, or as the crowd that had followed us all the way up from the river came to a halt behind us and went quiet.

Severin stopped in front of it.

They looked at each other. A tall gray construct and a lean gray man, in the shade of the old gate, for a long time.

”It doesn’t know me,” Severin said at last, softly. He did not say it to the Castellan. He said it to me.

”It knows everyone it’s met,” I said.

”Then it has met me now.”

”No,” said the Castellan.

Just that. Level and precise. The same voice it uses to tell Helena the pantry needs restocking.

Severin’s face did not change at all.

The Castellan held the silence a moment longer. Then it stepped to one side, exactly one pace, leaving the gateway clear.

”You are a guest of this house,” it said. ”Ansel has said so.”

It did not say his name. It has never, to this day, said his name.

Severin inclined his head, very slightly, as if to an equal. Then he stepped past it and through the gate and into the courtyard of Greykeep, and Iselle followed him, and as she passed the Castellan she glanced at it, quickly, sideways, the way you glance at someone you have been warned about.

The Castellan’s head turned, very slowly, and followed her all the way across the court.

The gifts went into the lesser hall, to be presented the next day.

Mary and I unpacked them. It was not a job anyone else wanted. The chests were heavier than they looked and smelled faintly of cedar and something else underneath, something like cold metal, and every one of them was packed with black silk so fine it slid off your fingers like water. Each gift had a tag tied to it with silver thread. Kethran script on one side. On the other, in a careful, elegant common-tongue hand that I recognized from the letter, the name of the person it was for.

Mary wrote every one of them down.

For the King of Greykeep. A book, bound in gray leather, with no title on the spine. A history of the Ostrane Imperium, Mary said, after she had looked at the first page. She did not look at the last page. I did, when she wasn’t watching. The last chapter had a heading and nothing under it. Forty blank pages, waiting.

For the Queen. For the Queen. Two of them, identical. Two long flat boxes, each with a bolt of the same black silk inside, so dark it seemed to drink the lamplight. He had not guessed which of them was which, or ranked them, or tried to. He had simply given them both the same, which was either very wise or very well informed.

For Mistress Mary. A pen. Silver, plain, perfectly balanced. Mary looked at it for a long time and then put it back in its box and wrote it down with her own.

There were others. A clockwork bird for Elenos that sang when you wound it. A Kethran sword for Roderic, beautifully made and slightly too heavy, which I suspect was the point. A box of the dark bitter tea for whoever wanted it.

And two boxes that were not like the others.

They were small. About the size of a jewel case, the kind Mother keeps her mother’s pearls in. Black lacquer, with silver hinges, and each one locked, with no key in the lock. The tags were longer than the others.

For the Lady Carol, in whom lightning sleeps. To be opened in her presence.

For the Lady Seraphina, who carries the First Flame. To be opened in her presence.

Mary held the first tag between two fingers for a moment. She did not write anything. Then she set both boxes on the very end of the long table, a little apart from everything else, and put a cloth over them.

”We’ll leave those,” she said.

”Yes,” I said.

There was one more thing at the bottom of the last chest. Wrapped in a twist of black silk, all on its own. I almost missed it.

A jar.

A small, round glass jar with a waxed cloth tied over the top, and inside it something deep and dark and glossy, like garnets in syrup. The tag on it was the shortest of all.

For the little one.

And then, underneath, in the same elegant hand:

Kethran plum. He will like it.

I stood there in the lesser hall with the jar in my hand and I could not think of anything at all to say.

Mary took it from me. Gently. She turned it over and looked at it from every side, the way she looks at a document she suspects of being forged. Then she wrote it down, with the time, and carried it out of the lesser hall herself, and down the passage to the little kitchen, and gave it to Helena.

Helena looked at it.

She looked at it for a long moment, with her spectacles on the end of her nose and the kettle beginning to sing behind her. Then she opened it, and smelled it, and tasted a little on the end of a spoon, very carefully, like a woman testing a stranger’s soup.

”It’s good,” she said.

Then she poured it all out into the slop bucket, and washed the jar, and put it upside down on the drainboard to dry.

”We have our own,” she said, and went back to the kettle.

* * *

I could not sleep.

Near midnight I gave up and went out onto the east wall, to the nook where Seraphina and I eat breakfast on fine mornings, and sat with my back against the warm stone and looked at the castle.

Most of the windows were dark. Father’s study was still lit. And high up on the north tower, Carol’s window, with the lamp still burning behind it. Even from the east wall I could see the faint glitter on the glass. Frost, in the middle of summer, catching the light.

The guest rooms are in the east wing, below and to the left of where I was sitting. There is a balcony outside the largest of them, a narrow stone one with a carved balustrade, that looks out across the inner court toward the north tower.

Someone was standing on it.

Not Severin. Smaller. Short dark hair, a gray dress, bare arms in the night air. Iselle. She was standing very still, with her hands on the balustrade, and she was looking up at the north tower. At Carol’s window. At the frost.

She looked at it for a long time.

Then, as if she had felt it, she turned her head and looked straight at me.

I don’t know how she knew I was there. I was in shadow, in a corner of the wall, with nothing to give me away. But she looked at me as directly as if I had called her name. Across the dark court, across forty yards of night, her face pale and unreadable.

Neither of us moved.

Then she took her right hand off the balustrade, and held it up, so that I could see it against the lamplight from the room behind her.

Open. Palm out. The fingers spread wide.

The opposite of a closed hand.

She held it there for three heartbeats. Then she lowered it, and turned, and went back inside, and the curtain fell across the window behind her.

I sat on the east wall until the lamp in Carol’s window went out, and then a long while after that, looking at the empty balcony, and trying to decide whether I had just been threatened, or warned, or asked for help.

I still hadn’t decided when the sun came up.
