The Greykeep Chronicles

Everyone who’d come came.

By a quarter to twelve every one of the forty plain wooden chairs in the Council Hall had a god in it, and the gods who hadn’t got chairs were standing along the curved white wall under the high windows, and Mary had moved her little desk twice to make room and was looking at the door as though she’d like to lock it, which she would never do, because there are no locks in the Council Hall. Aurelia asked for that too.

I’d never seen it so full. Not even for Teo.

Brannoc was there, broad and gray-bearded, in his old leather, sitting the way he always sits, as if the chair were a wall he’d been asked to hold. Corra beside him, autumn-colored, with a leaf caught in her hair that I don’t think she knew about. Soren and Meriel, side by side, in gray. Ilyra, who had sat up with Teo. Damar, filling two chairs and apologizing to both of them. Thor with her hammer leaned against her knee, which isn’t allowed, and which nobody ever tells her isn’t allowed. Loki, sitting backward on his chair with his chin on its back, eating an apple. Baldr, pale and quiet, with his hands folded. Lysandra in the seat that used to be Io’s. Io in the seat beside Lexander. Lexander with his eye patch and his gray beard and his raven on the back of his chair, looking at nothing, which is how he looks at everything.

Rysa was by the door, with her faded blue bag of toys in her lap. Thesra was beside her. When I came in, Thesra reached out without looking and patted my hand, the way she has every time I’ve walked into that room since I was old enough to walk.

And Aurelia, in the chair nearest the chapel wall, in her plain white dress, with the light very low and very steady around her.

My father came in last, in his boots this time, and sat down in his chair, which is exactly like every other chair. And Mary opened her black book.

The family sits on the bench by the door. We always have. We aren’t the Council. We’re the people the Council is about, most of the time, and my father says it’s good for a person to have to sit on a bench and listen while other people decide things about them. He says it keeps you honest.

So we sat on the bench. Carol at the end, by the door, in her own blue coat now, with her hands warm in her lap. Ignatius beside her. Then me. Then Seraphina, without little Uriah, who was in the little kitchen with Helena and Iselle, being taught the bread whether he liked it or not. Then Roderic. Then Caitlin, with her notebook. And at the very end, with her knees drawn up and her chin on them, Thora.

She’d come through the Concordia gate that morning with her mother. She was nineteen and a half, and had been on the Council’s road for eighteen months, and had come home tanned and thin and quiet, with Io’s eyes and Lexander’s way of looking at nothing. Seraphina had held on to her for a long time in the lower hall, and Thora had let her, and then said, without any warning at all, ”Something’s going to happen at noon. I’d like to hear it.”

Nobody asks Thora how she knows things. Not anymore.

* * *

My father told it all.

He told it simply, the way he tells things in the little kitchen. The lamp on the pier. The letter, and Mary read it again, every word, we regret the misunderstanding and we permit and we will come ourself, and Iselle’s door that did not open. The second letter, the gray one, which he took out of his shirt pocket and read himself and put back. Then Carol’s night. All of it. The flat sea and the gold city and the room with no doors. The hand. Stop. The holding, going out across the water and closing on the hand of the Emperor of Kethra a hand’s width from her face.

When he got to that part, the whole Council Hall went so quiet I could hear Loki stop chewing.

”And she let go,” said my father. ”Herself. In the dream.” He looked across the ring at the bench. At Carol. ”And then she came down a hundred and forty stairs in the dark and asked her brother to say her name. Because she was frightened that she’d liked it.”

Carol didn’t look away. She sat very straight on the end of the bench with her warm hands in her lap and let forty gods look at her.

”That’s all of it,” said my father. ”Spring. He’s coming. He says he’ll wait to be asked in.” He sat back in his chair. ”I’ve asked you here to decide what we do between now and then.”

* * *

Thor spoke first. Thor always speaks first.

”We go now,” she said, and her voice came up out of her chest like weather, and her red-gold braid lifted off her back and crackled. ”Not in the spring. Now. While the sea’s rough and Draum’s got his hands full holding it flat for sixty ships that aren’t even there anymore. We take the gates as far as Westmere and the rest by water, and we find this golden city, and we knock on whatever he’s got that isn’t a door.” She thumped the hammer’s handle against the floor, very lightly, which made every window in the hall hum. ”He’s come into our harbor. He’s come into Concordia. He’s come into my little spark’s sleep. And we’re going to sit here until the spring?”

”Thor,” said Lexander mildly, without looking at her.

”Father.”

”You’re shouting.”

”I’m agreeing with myself,” said Thor. ”Loudly. There’s a difference.”

There was a low rumble around the ring that might have been agreement. Brannoc shifted in his chair. Corra was watching Thor with her head on one side. Loki, still sitting backward, took another bite of his apple and said, around it, ”I’ll come. Obviously. I’d like to see a room with no doors. I’ve got ideas about rooms with no doors.”

And I found I was on my feet.

I hadn’t meant to stand up. The family sits on the bench. The family listens. But I was standing up anyway, with my hands in fists at my sides, and the whole Council Hall was turning around to look at me, and over by the door, with her blue bag in her lap, Rysa looked straight at me and mouthed, the way she has since I was two years old:

Name?

”Garrick Grey,” I said. Out loud. To the whole ring. ”May I speak?”

My father looked at me for a long moment across the hall.

”You may,” he said.

* * *

I don’t remember all of what I said. Caitlin wrote it down, so I know it was more than I meant and less than I felt.

I said that I’d stood on the north pier at Westmere and felt those ships sing at my own sister through the soles of my boots. That I’d chased Teo through the gate square with a brand on his arm a hundred and twelve years old. That I’d been in the Ember Room when the white fire wouldn’t go out. That I’d watched Hobb Kitto’s mother sit on a herring barrel for twenty-four days.

I said that there were gods on the other side of that sea sitting on a shelf where Malachar had put them, like pots. Storm gods and river gods and harvest gods, and little ones, the kind nobody notices, held still so long they’d forgotten what it was to move. I said there were children over there with a mark burned into their arms. I said there was a choir below decks on sixty ships made of gods who’d said no twice and had their names taken for it.

”And last night,” I said, ”my sister held him. With his own power. In his own dream. She held his hand still and told him no and he couldn’t do a thing about it.” I looked around the ring. ”We’ve never been stronger than we are right now. Carol and I have been around every god in this room. We’ve kept every power we’ve ever been near. We’re every god in the room, Aurelia said, when we were babies. And he’s one man in a gold box with no doors.” My voice was shaking. I didn’t care. ”And you want to sit here until the spring and wait for him?”

Nobody said anything.

Then Thor said, ”Yes,” very loudly, and hit the floor with the hammer again, and the windows hummed.

And Aurelia stood up.

* * *

She didn’t raise her voice. She never does. She stood up from her chair by the chapel wall in her plain white dress, with the light very low and steady around her, and she looked at me. Not at Thor. At me.

”Garrick,” she said. ”Thank you. That was true, all of it. Every word.” She folded her hands. ”May I answer?”

I nodded. I didn’t trust my voice.

”You said the held gods are like pots on a shelf,” said Aurelia. ”You’re right. That’s exactly what they are. That’s how he keeps them. Still, and quiet, and within reach.” She paused. ”So tell me. If a stranger comes into a man’s house with a hammer, what does that man do with the things on his shelves?”

I didn’t answer.

”He throws them,” said Aurelia gently. ”Every one. At the door. The storm gods first, I should think, because they’d do the most damage. And then the rivers. And then the harvest gods, last of all, so that whatever he couldn’t keep would go hungry.” She looked around the ring. ”If we cross that sea with fire and thunder, my dears, we won’t be fighting Malachar. We’ll be fighting every god he’s holding. Gods who never chose him. Gods who’d come to us, if they could. He’ll throw them at us one by one, and we’ll have to break them to get to him, and when it’s done he’ll be standing in his room with no doors, holding the rest, and we’ll be standing in the wreckage of everything we went over there to save.”

The hall was very quiet.

”That’s what he’s for,” said Aurelia. ”That’s what holding is for. It’s not to keep things safe. It’s to have something to throw.”

* * *

Then Lexander spoke.

He hadn’t moved the whole time. He was sitting in his chair with his raven on the back of it and his one eye on nothing, the way he sits at the fishing table with his line in the water, looking as though he’s asleep and catching more than anyone.

”He reached,” said Lexander. ”Slowly. Carefully. The way you’d reach for a bird.” He turned his head and looked at Carol, on the end of the bench. ”Isn’t that what you said, girl?”

”Yes,” said Carol.

”I’ve reached for a great many birds,” said Lexander. ”I’ve got one behind me. And I’ll tell you a thing about reaching for a bird, slowly, carefully, so as not to frighten it.” He turned his eye back to the middle of the ring. ”You don’t do it because you want the bird to stay where it is. You do it because you want the bird to come to you.”

Nobody said anything.

”He’s written that he’ll come in the spring,” said Lexander. ”Perhaps he will. I’ll believe it when I see his feet on our pier. But I’ll tell you what I think he’d like better.” He leaned back. ”I think he’d like us to come to him. I think he’d like us very much to cross that sea, angry, with our hammers, and knock on a wall that isn’t a door. Because then we’d be on his shore. In his city. In his room. And a room with no doors is a very hard room to leave.” He shut his eye. ”A man who reaches carefully, son, is a man who wants you to reach back.”

I sat down.

I didn’t decide to. My knees just did it. Seraphina, beside me, put her hand flat on the bench between us, where I could see it, and didn’t take mine. Just left it there.

* * *

”Thora,” said Io.

She didn’t say it loudly. She didn’t turn her head. But everyone in the Council Hall turned to look at the end of our bench, where Thora was sitting with her knees drawn up and her chin on them, looking at the middle of the floor.

Her eyes had gone far away. The way they’d gone in the college square, the morning of the chase, when she saw a gray coat and nine books and a green door.

”If we go,” she said, in a quiet, ordinary voice, as if she were reading it off the floor, ”the sea stands up.”

Thor stopped with the hammer half lifted.

”All of it,” said Thora. ”Like a wall. Gray. Taller than the castle. From Westmere all the way down the coast. And we’re on the wrong side of it.” She blinked, slowly. ”And it doesn’t come down. Not for a long time.”

”Draum,” said Brannoc, very low.

”And if we don’t go?” said Io.

Thora was quiet for a long time. Her eyes moved, a little, as if she were following something very small across the floor.

”Doors,” she said at last. ”Little ones. A long way off. Opening.” She frowned. ”From the inside.”

Then her eyes came back, and she was just Thora again, nineteen and tired and a long way from the road, and she put her chin back on her knees and said, ”Sorry. That’s all. It doesn’t come with instructions.”

”It never does,” said Io, and for a moment, across the whole width of the ring, she looked at her youngest daughter in a way I’d only ever seen her look at the First Flame.

* * *

My father decided.

He doesn’t, usually. Not in the Council Hall. He’s one chair of forty. But he’d called them, and it was his harbor and his family and his daughter’s dream, and when he leaned forward with his elbows on his knees, every god in the ring leaned a little way forward with him.

”We watch,” he said.

Thor opened her mouth. My father held up one hand, not looking at her, and she shut it again.

”We don’t go,” he said. ”Not in winter. Not with hammers. Not to knock on a wall. We don’t send ships, and we don’t send letters, except the one we’ve already written, and only if Selvane says she’ll carry it. We don’t give him a single thing to throw.” He looked around the ring. ”But watch doesn’t mean sit. I’ve been sitting since one o’clock this morning and I’m sick of it. So here’s what watching means.”

He counted it off on his fingers. He does that when he’s tired.

Eleanor would walk every gate on the continent with the Castellan before midwinter. Every arch, every ward, every brass plate. She’d already begun cutting the Castellan’s knowing into the big gates after Teo; now she’d finish all of them, and look for anything that had been opened, or loosened, or left ajar.

Tamar would keep the double watch at Westmere all winter. Not on ships. There weren’t any. On the water itself, and the sky over it, and the mist.

Benjamin would stay at Westmere with the stone, if he was willing, and sing to it every night, if Selvane was willing to listen.

Damar would walk the coast. All of it. Every harbor, every cliff, every beach, listening down through the stone to the seabed for anything else that had been left behind. ”For listening,” said my father. ”Or for anything else.”

Loki would not go anywhere near Kethra.

”I wasn’t going to,” said Loki, injured, with his mouth full of apple.

”You were,” said my father. ”You had the face.”

The mercy clause stood. Anyone with a mark on them was a Teo, not an enemy. Ask their name. Ask what they want. And the Council’s peace roads would stay open, every one of them, all winter. Thora’s road, and Lysandra’s, and Baldr’s. ”Nobody shuts a door here because they’re frightened,” said my father. ”That’s his trick. Not ours.”

And Carol would sleep in the top room of the north tower, the same as always, with Ignatius in the chair by the east window, the same as always. And every morning she’d say my name, and I’d say hers.

”And if he reaches again?” said Brannoc.

My father looked at the end of our bench.

”Then she’ll tell him stop,” he said. ”She’s already shown him what that means.” He sat back. ”I’d like to see him try it a second time. I don’t think he will. Not before spring. I think he’s sitting in his gold room right now, looking at his own hand.”

* * *

They voted.

They do it in the Council Hall by standing up. You don’t raise your hand. You stand, so everyone can see you, and you stay standing until Mary has written you down. Aurelia stood first. Then Lexander. Then Io, and Lysandra, and Baldr, and Brannoc, and Corra, and Damar, both of his chairs creaking with relief. Then Soren and Meriel and Ilyra and all the rest, row after row, until there were forty gods on their feet and twenty more along the wall.

Thor stood last. She did it slowly, with her hammer in her fist, glaring at the ceiling, and said, to nobody in particular, ”I want it written down that I think it’s a terrible idea and I’m voting for it anyway.”

”I’ve written it,” said Mary. ”I write it every time.”

And Mary wrote one word in the black book, under Spring.

Watch.

I sat on the bench by the door and watched her write it, and hated it with my whole body.

* * *

I went to find Grandpa Garrick afterward. I’m not sure why. I think I just wanted to be somewhere that smelled of something other than gods.

His workshop is off the stable yard. A long low room with a stove, and tools hanging on the wall in painted outlines so you can always see which one’s missing, and a smell of linseed oil and oak shavings and the pipe he isn’t supposed to smoke. He was at his bench in the window with his spectacles on, and a row of wooden horses in front of him, waiting.

He didn’t look up. He just pushed a square of sandpaper across the bench toward me, and a little walnut horse with rough ears.

”Ears,” he said.

I sat down and sanded ears. We didn’t talk for a long time. The stove ticked. The light moved across the floor. I did one horse, and then another, and then a gray one with a chipped tail that I think might have been the one Roderic was holding the night he told me about Iselle.

”Your father told me,” said Grandpa at last. ”About the vote.”

”I hate it.”

”I know you do. You’ve been sanding that ear for ten minutes. It’s going to be a very small ear.” He took his spectacles off and rubbed his eyes. ”You know what the hardest part of a war is?”

I shook my head.

”Not the fighting. Anyone can fight. A dog can fight.” He put his spectacles back on and picked up the next horse. ”The hardest part’s the part where nothing happens. Weeks of it. Months. Watching a road. Watching a gate. Watching a harbor with nothing in it. And every day you want to go and do something, and every day somebody with more sense than you says not yet, and you hate them for it.” He blew dust off the horse’s mane. ”And then one day it turns out that the watching was the whole thing. That’s what nobody tells you. The waiting isn’t the bit between the war. The waiting is the war. The side that can wait longest, without doing anything stupid, usually wins.”

I looked at the walnut horse in my hand. Its ear was, in fact, very small.

”Who told you that?” I said.

”Brannoc.” Grandpa put the horse down. ”Years ago. Right here, on that stool, with a cup of my tea he didn’t like. He said he once stood on a wall for eleven months watching a road for an army that never came. Worst year of his life, he said. Most useful one, too. Turned out it never came because he was on the wall.” He pushed another horse toward me. ”Here. That one’s got two ears. Try and leave it some.”

* * *

Benjamin came through the Westmere gate a little after nine that night.

The Castellan logged him. I was in the lower hall when he came through, because I’d gone down to look at the six arches, the way I do sometimes when I can’t settle, and I saw the brass plate on the Westmere gate go bright, and the gray shimmer in the arch move like water. And Benjamin stepped out of it in his salt-white coat, with the sea wind still in his hair.

He saw me and stopped.

”Garrick,” he said. ”Good. Where’s your father?”

”The little kitchen, I should think.”

”Come with me.”

We went up the back stair. My father was at the scrubbed table with Aurelia and Mary and Carol, and a pot of tea, and the black Council book open between them. Benjamin stood in the doorway and didn’t sit down.

”I sang to her,” he said. ”An hour ago. She answered.”

Aurelia stood up.

”She’ll carry the letter,” said Benjamin. ”She said yes. She said she’d come for it to the end of the north pier the night after the next new moon, and light the lamp, and take it.” He swallowed. ”And then she told me something else. She said she’d been waiting for someone to sing so she could tell somebody.”

He looked at Carol.

”Last night,” he said, ”a little before dawn, their time, something happened in Kethra. Something nobody’s ever felt there before. Selvane felt it from wherever she’s hiding. She said it went through the whole country at once, like a bell.”

”What was it?” said my father.

”His hand went still,” said Benjamin.

Nobody moved.

”Just for a breath,” said Benjamin. ”Just for one breath. Everything he’s holding, every god on every shelf, every river and every storm and every harvest, all of them at once. For one breath, his grip on all of them went still. Not loose. He didn’t let go. But it stopped. The way a hand stops when someone takes hold of the wrist.” His voice went rough. ”A river god in the south moved for the first time in forty years. Just a ripple. A harvest god up on the plateaus made it rain on one field. One. And then the grip came back, and everything went quiet again.” He looked at Carol. ”But they felt it. All of them. Every held god in Kethra felt the hand that holds them stop, for one breath, because somebody somewhere held it.” He paused. ”Selvane says they’re whispering. All over Kethra. On their shelves. In the dark. For the first time in a hundred years.” He swallowed. ”They’re asking who did it.”

Carol had both hands pressed flat on the table. They were warm. I could feel it through the twin-room, the warmth of them, and under it something going through her that wasn’t fear and wasn’t wanting. Something enormous and quiet and very, very bright.

My father looked at her for a long moment. Then he looked at me.

”Well,” he said. ”That’s watching.”

Mary had already picked up her pen.

She didn’t say anything. She just turned the black Council book around on the table, so that we could all see the page, and there, under Spring, and under Watch, in her neat, small, careful hand, she wrote one more line.

They are asking.

I went back to Grandpa’s workshop after that, at ten o’clock at night, and let myself in, and sat at the bench under the lamp, and finished every ear on the row.

I left them all a reasonable size.
