The Greykeep Chronicles

We buried Teo in the orchard below the castle wall, on the morning after, under the oldest apple tree.

It was Helena’s idea. She said a man who’d been held for a hundred and twelve years ought to lie somewhere things grow and fall and grow again, and nobody keeps any of it. Grandpa dug the grave himself, with Elenos and Faelan taking turns on the second spade, and wouldn’t let anyone else touch it. He made the marker too, that same night, in the workshop, out of a plank of the good oak he’d been saving for a cradle. He didn’t carve a chain on it. He didn’t carve anything on it but the name, in deep plain letters, the way he carves the names under the saddles of his horses.

TEO.

Meriel came for the rite. The goddess of mourning, in her long gray veil, who walks into a room and makes every candle in it burn a little lower and a little steadier, as if the flames were listening. She stood at the head of the grave in the cold bright morning with the frost still on the grass, and said what she always says first.

”A naming needs two voices.”

Aurelia spoke first. She’d been the one to ask him, so she said his name first, in her own voice, clear and gentle, the way she’d said it to the lower hall. Teo.

And then Iselle stepped forward.

She hadn’t been asked. She’d come down from the north tower with Carol, in her gray dress, and stood at the back with Roderic beside her, and nobody had expected her to say anything. But when Meriel turned her veiled head and looked around the circle for the second voice, Iselle stepped forward out of it and knelt at the foot of the grave and took a stick from the grass.

She wrote his name in the frost.

In Kethran. The right way around. Teo. Three letters, clear and careful, in the hand of a girl who’d learned them at a kitchen table between two mountains.

And before it, where every Kethran writes the long hook and the double kink and the short hard stroke, she wrote nothing at all. Just a little space. Just the white frost, untouched.

”His name was Teo,” she said, in Kethran, and then in our tongue. ”He was nobody’s but his own.”

Meriel bowed her head.

”Heard,” she said.

And every candle she’d brought, set in a ring around the grave in the frost, went out together, the way candles go out when a breath of wind comes through a room. Not dark. Just done.

* * *

The Council met at noon.

Not all forty chairs. It never is. But more of them were full that day than I’d seen since the day the fleet came. Brannoc, square and silent, with his shield-arm folded across his chest. Corra, in russet and gold. Soren. Meriel, still in her veil. Ilyra, the goddess of last vigils, who’d sat with Teo’s body through the night. Damar, like a section of wall, with dust in his beard. Loki, for once not leaning on anything. Thor, who’d come through the gate from Concordia with her hammer and set it down very gently on the floor beside her chair. Baldr, beside her. Lysandra, in the seat that used to be Io’s.

And Father, and Lexander, and Io, and Aurelia, in the plain wooden chairs of the ring, no higher than anyone’s.

The Council Hall is round. Eleanor built it the year after the stream. It’s high and full of light, with tall windows all the way around, and no table and no dais, because Aurelia said she was tired of rooms where somebody sat higher than somebody else. I sat on the bench by the door with Carol and Seraphina, where the family sits when we’re not members. You can hear everything from there.

Aurelia stood up.

She held something in her hand. A small square of paper, with a drawing on it in Caitlin’s careful pen. Two loops, one inside the other, joined at one side. The shape that had been burned into Teo’s wrist.

”This is Kessavel’s mark,” she said.

The hall went very still.

”I knew it the moment I saw it,” said Aurelia. ”I knew it when I took Teo’s hands. I’ve felt that oath before. Once. A very long time ago, before any of you had chairs in this hall.” She held up the paper so everyone could see it. ”Kessavel was the god of oaths. Every promise in Kethra was made in his name. When Malachar asked him, he took the oldest oath he’d ever witnessed and forged it into a chain, and locked one end on his own wrist, and gave the other end to Malachar.” She lowered the paper. ”We knew that. I told the family in the chapel, two months ago. The Chained wear their links openly. A dozen gods. Proud of it.”

She looked around the ring.

”What we didn’t know,” she said quietly, ”is that he’s been putting it on people.”

Nobody moved.

”Not gods. People. Children.” Aurelia’s voice didn’t rise. It didn’t need to. ”Teo was eleven years old. In a temple, in a town he couldn’t remember. A hundred and twelve years ago. They burned the link into his wrist, and the oath held him. He didn’t age. He didn’t sicken. He didn’t tire. He did what he was told, and he went where he was sent, and he couldn’t say his own name without it trying to kill him.” She paused. ”And they put a frightened little god inside him like a coat, so nobody would ever look at him twice.”

Thor’s hand had closed on the haft of her hammer. Very gently. The floor under her chair creaked.

”A hundred and twelve years,” said Brannoc. His voice was like a door closing. ”How many?”

”I don’t know,” said Aurelia.

”How many are in the kingdoms now?” said Lysandra.

It was the question I’d been waiting for. I think everyone had. Lysandra has a way of asking the question everyone in the room is afraid of, out loud, in a perfectly ordinary voice, as if she were asking the price of bread. I watched two old gods across the ring look at each other in alarm.

”I don’t know that either,” said Aurelia.

The hall was silent for a long time.

It was Damar who broke it. He didn’t stand up. He just spoke, and the stone floor carried it, so that I felt it through my boots on the bench by the door.

”They don’t knock,” he said. ”That’s what frightens me. Every god who comes into these lands knocks. Even the Lockwarden waits outside. These don’t knock. They don’t come in as gods at all. They come in as servants. Doorkeepers. Clerks.” He looked around the ring with his deep-set stone-colored eyes. ”And who looks twice at a doorkeeper?”

* * *

”The Castellan does,” said my father.

Every head in the ring turned toward him.

He hadn’t spoken until then. He’d been sitting in his plain wooden chair with his hands folded, listening, the way he listens in the boat. He looked around the ring now, at the old gods and the new ones, at Thor with her hand on her hammer and Damar with the dust in his beard, and he didn’t look frightened. He looked the way he looks when he’s already worked out what to do and is just waiting for everyone else to get there.

”The Castellan looks twice at doorkeepers,” he said. ”It looks twice at everyone. It’s looked at every single person who’s walked through a gate in these kingdoms for the last twenty-four years, and it’s written down every one of their names.” He turned his head toward the door. ”Castellan. Would you come in?”

It had been standing in the doorway the whole time. It doesn’t sit in the Council. It never has. But it came in now, into the middle of the ring, with its metal feet very quiet on the floor, and stopped.

”I am here,” it said.

”You held Teo in your gate for two days,” said my father. ”You were beside him when Aurelia broke the oath. You felt it.”

”Yes.”

”Would you know it again?”

The Castellan was quiet for a long moment. Then it turned its head, slowly, and looked at Aurelia.

”Yes,” it said. ”I know the shape of it now. It is like a name that sits on someone like a coat on a chair. But heavier. With a lock in it.” It paused. ”I did not know what I was feeling before. Now I do.”

”Have you felt it since?” said Lysandra. ”In anyone else? Anyone who’s crossed your gates?”

”I have been looking,” said the Castellan.

The whole hall waited.

”Since the morning Teo gave his name,” it said, ”I have read my ledgers. All of them. Every name, every crossing, every gate. Twenty-four years.” It said it as if it were nothing. As if it had been a quiet evening’s work. ”I have held each name in my mind, and asked myself whether it sat on its person the way a name should. Like a key in a lock. Or like a coat on a chair, with a lock in it.” It paused. ”Most sit as they should. Some sit crooked. Loki’s sits crooked.” It didn’t look at Loki. Loki looked faintly pleased. ”That is not the same thing.”

”And?” said Brannoc.

”Severin Dask,” said the Castellan. ”As before. His name sits on him like a coat on a chair. But there is no lock in it. I have checked many times.” It was quiet a moment. ”I do not know what that means. I am telling you what I found.”

”And the others?”

”None,” said the Castellan.

The hall let out its breath. I felt it go out of the room like a draft through a door.

”No one else bearing that oath has crossed any gate I keep,” said the Castellan. ”Not in twenty-four years. Teo came by sea, with Severin’s ships, and lived by the harbor in Concordia, and never once used my gates until he ran into one.” It turned its head toward my father. ”If any others are in these lands, they did not come through a door that I was standing in.”

”Then we stand in more doors,” said Eleanor.

She’d been sitting on the family bench beside us, with her spectacles pushed up on her forehead. Now she stood up.

”I can cut it into the wards,” she said. ”What the Castellan knows. The shape of it. I can teach the plates to feel for a name with a lock in it, the way the Castellan does, and close if they find one. Every gate. Every harbor wall. Every chapel door, if you want them.” She pushed her spectacles down onto her nose. ”It’ll take brass. A great deal of brass. And it’ll take time. But I can have the big gates done by the end of the month, and every gate in the kingdoms by midwinter.”

”Concordia will pay for every plate,” said Lexander at once.

”Greykeep will,” said my father.

They looked at each other across the ring. It was the look of two men who’d been arguing about who’d pay for the bait on fishing mornings for twenty years.

”Neither of you will,” said Damar.

The floor rumbled very slightly.

”The copper’s under my hills,” he said. ”The tin’s under my hills. I know where every vein of it runs for fifty miles.” He folded his great arms. ”I’ll bring the brass up myself. Eleanor can have as much as she wants. Nobody pays for it.” He looked at my father with his deep-set stone-colored eyes. ”Stone doesn’t belong to a god just because he can hear it. And it doesn’t belong to anybody who’d burn a child’s name into him, either.”

Thor laughed. Loud, sudden, delighted, the way thunder sounds on a hot afternoon when it finally breaks.

”Oh, I like him,” she said.

* * *

They voted before the bells rang one o’clock.

Every gate in the kingdoms, re-warded with the Castellan’s knowledge and Damar’s brass, the big gates first. Word sent by raven and rider to every king and queen and steward in Avarra, with Caitlin’s drawing of the mark, and Aurelia’s account of what it meant, and one plain instruction from the Council, in Lysandra’s handwriting: If you find someone who carries this, do not ask them anything. Send for Aurelia. A watch put on every harbor, quietly, by people who knew what to look for. Tamar Vale to be told first, in person, by me, that evening.

And one thing more, which Aurelia asked for, and nobody voted against.

”If we find others,” she said, standing in the middle of the ring with Caitlin’s drawing in her hand, ”they won’t be enemies. They’ll be Teos. Children who were eleven once, in a temple they can’t remember.” She looked around the ring. ”We don’t punish them. We don’t lock them up. We break the oath, and we ask them their names, and we ask them what they want.” She paused. ”And if what they want is to stop, we let them. And if what they want is to live, we help them.”

”Seconded,” said Meriel, from behind her veil.

”Agreed,” said Brannoc.

It went around the ring like that. One voice after another. Nobody argued. Nobody even paused.

When it got to my father, he just nodded.

”That’s what we do here,” he said. ”That’s always what we’ve done.”

I sat on the bench by the door with Carol on one side of me and Seraphina on the other, and listened to forty chairs agree, and for the first time since the singing began, since the black ships and the river and the fire and the gate, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time.

Not safe. I don’t think any of us were going to feel safe for a while.

But ahead. For the first time, we were ahead.

* * *

I found the little god that evening, on the Castellan’s ledger.

It had stayed in the lower hall since the morning Teo died. Nobody had told it to. Nobody had told it anything. It had just drifted out of the gate, that first afternoon, and settled on the slanted wooden stand where the Castellan keeps its great open book, and stayed there, very small and very gray, on the corner of the page, like a moth on a windowsill.

The Castellan let it. It wrote around it.

People had been coming to look at it all day. Not to do anything. Just to look. Helena had stood in front of the ledger for a long time, that morning, with her hands folded, and looked, hard, the way she looks at a pan of bread to see if it’s done. Mary had come out of her office twice. Elenos and Faelan had come down in the afternoon and sat on the bottom stair for an hour, staring at it, arguing in whispers about whether it had a face. Little Uriah had been carried down three separate times at his own loud insistence, and every time, he’d laughed and pointed.

Nobody’s eyes slid off it anymore. Not in that hall. Everybody had made sure.

I came down after supper, when the lower hall was empty except for the Castellan and the lamps, and sat on the floor in front of the ledger stand, so that my face was about level with the corner of the page.

Carol came with me. I hadn’t asked her to. She just came, and sat down beside me on the cold granite, and didn’t say anything.

The little god was very still. It knew we were there. I could feel it knowing. The way you feel a bird on a branch decide whether or not to fly.

I took a breath.

”My name is Garrick Grey,” I said.

It didn’t move.

”This is my sister. Carol.” I didn’t take my eyes off it. ”Teo said someone should ask you your name. So I’m asking.” I paused. ”You don’t have to answer. If you don’t want to, that’s the end of it, and nobody will be angry, and I won’t ask again.”

It flickered.

Just slightly. Like a candle in a draft. And then I felt it, very faintly, through the part of me that was still a little bit it, the part I’d kept on the quay. Not words. Just a feeling. A small, bewildered, embarrassed feeling, like a child who’s been asked a question in front of the whole class and doesn’t know the answer.

I don’t have one.

”That’s all right,” I said. ”Lots of people don’t, at first. Little Uriah didn’t. He had to be given one.” I thought about it. ”You can wait for a better one. Or you can borrow one for now. Until you find the one that’s yours.”

The little gray thing was quiet for a long time.

Then it moved. It lifted off the corner of the page, the way a moth lifts off a windowsill, and drifted up into the lamplight, and hung there for a moment, soft and gray and trembling, with the gold of the lamps showing faintly through it.

”Moth,” said Carol.

It went very still in the air.

I turned and looked at her. She was looking up at it, with her pale cold hands folded in her lap, and her face was very soft.

”That’s what it looks like,” she said. ”That’s what it is. Something small that comes to the light, and nobody notices it until it’s right there on the windowsill.” She paused. ”Only if it wants it. Only for now.”

The little god hung in the lamplight.

And then it came down, very slowly, and landed on the back of Carol’s hand.

She didn’t move. She didn’t close her fingers. I watched her not close them. I watched her hold her hand perfectly, absolutely still, flat and open on her knee, with a tiny frightened god sitting on it, and not hold.

The Castellan looked up from its ledger. It looked at Carol’s hand for a long moment. Then it bent its head and wrote.

Moth. Lower hall. Asked.

* * *

”There’s one more thing,” I said.

Moth was still sitting on Carol’s hand. It hadn’t moved. I think it was afraid that if it moved, someone would stop looking at it.

”I kept something of yours,” I told it. ”On the quay. When Loki and I came looking for you. I didn’t mean to. I didn’t ask. It just came in. That’s how it works, for Carol and me. Everything we stand next to comes in, and we keep it.” I swallowed. ”I’ve had it for more than a week. It made people look past me at the breakfast table. It made my own mother not see me. And it showed me where Teo was, in the gate square. So it helped, at the end.” I held out my own hand, palm up, beside Carol’s. ”But it isn’t mine. It’s yours. I’d like to give it back. If you’ll let me.”

Moth didn’t move for a long time.

Then, very faintly, I felt it again. That small, bewildered feeling. Only different, this time. Like a child who’s just been offered something back that they thought was lost forever, and doesn’t quite believe it.

Yes.

I didn’t know how to do it. Nobody had ever done it. Carol and I keep things. That’s what we are. We’d never once given anything back. Not since the stream, when we were three, and held everything Varrick had taken and handed it back to every god it belonged to, one by one, and kept a seed of each without meaning to.

But I’d said no to the keeping once, in the nursery, with my son against my neck. And it had listened.

So I tried.

I went looking for it, inside me. The thing I’d kept on the quay. It wasn’t easy to find. That’s the nature of it. It’s the part of you that nobody notices, including yourself. I had to go very quiet, and look just to the side of everything, the way Father had looked at the gap in the line. And there it was. A small gray softness, at the very edge of me. Like the place where your eye goes when it slides.

I held it. Very gently. The way you’d hold a moth in cupped hands to carry it to a window.

And I said, out loud, in the empty lower hall: ”This is yours. Name. Want. Permission. I’m giving it back.”

And I let go.

It was the strangest feeling of my life. Not like losing something. Like setting something down that I hadn’t known I was carrying. The small gray softness went out of me, out through my open palm, across the hand’s width of air between my hand and Carol’s, and into the little god sitting on the back of her wrist. Moth flickered. Brightened. Went, for a moment, a very soft pale gold in the lamplight, the color of a moth’s wing when the sun comes through it.

And then it was gray again. But it was a different gray. It was the gray of something that knew exactly what it was.

I sat on the floor of the lower hall and looked at my own empty hand.

”Garrick,” said Carol.

She was looking at me. Not at Moth. At me. Her face had gone very white, and her eyes were enormous.

”You gave it back,” she said.

”I gave it back.”

”We don’t do that. We’ve never done that.”

”I know.”

She looked down at her other hand. The one without Moth on it. The pale cold one, that could stop a candle flame in the middle of a flicker, that she’d been holding in her lap for nearly two weeks so it wouldn’t close on anything by accident.

”Then I could too,” she said. Very quietly. As if she were afraid to say it out loud. ”If I found it. If I asked. I could give it back.” She looked up at me. ”The holding. I don’t have to keep it.”

I didn’t answer. I didn’t have to.

Carol closed her eyes. I watched her shoulders come down, very slowly, for the first time since the river. As if something enormous she’d been carrying had just turned out to have a handle.

Moth sat on the back of her open hand in the lamplight and didn’t move. Behind us, the Castellan dipped its pen and wrote one more line, very small, at the bottom of the day’s page. I read it later. I always do.

Garrick Grey. Gave something back.

And underneath, after a moment:

First time.
