The Greykeep Chronicles

He sat in the gate for two days.

Nobody spoke to him. That was the rule, and the Castellan kept it the way it keeps everything, without a single exception. It stood in front of the big arch in the lower hall, day and night, with one metal hand resting on the brass plate of the left-hand pillar, and it didn’t go back to its ledger once. The ordinary traffic of the big gate went around by Lyradon for two days, and nobody complained, because everybody in Havenreach knew by the first evening what was sitting in the gray between the arches, and nobody wanted to walk through it.

He didn’t eat. He didn’t sleep. As far as any of us could tell, he didn’t move. He sat in the middle of the throat of the gate with his back straight and his hands folded inside his long gray sleeves, and he waited. Sometimes, at night, when the lower hall was empty except for the Castellan and me, he spoke. Never loudly. Never to anyone.

”You’ll have to ask me eventually.”

I’d sit on the bottom step of the main stair with my back against the wall and not answer.

I should say something about the lower hall, here, because I spent most of those two nights in it and I’ve never looked at it so closely. It’s beautiful. People who come to Greykeep from the other kingdoms always stop in the doorway and stare. The floor is pale gray granite from the quarries above the Greymere, cut and laid so true that you can’t slide a knife between the stones. The six arches of the gates are faced in white marble veined with gold. The lamps along the gallery are brass and crystal, and every one of them was a gift from somebody whose town got rich off Greykeep’s iron, or Greykeep’s silver, or Greykeep’s copper. There’s a ruby the size of a hen’s egg set into the keystone of the big arch, because when Damar found the seam it came from, he brought the first stone up the hill himself and gave it to Father, and Father didn’t know what else to do with it.

That’s Damar. A god built like a section of wall, with a dusty dark-gray beard and a voice you feel through your boots. He came to Greykeep when I was a baby, and walked the hills above the castle for a year, listening to the stone. And at the end of the year he came down and told Father where every vein of gold and silver and iron and copper and tin ran, for fifty miles in every direction, and every pocket of garnet and sapphire and ruby, and where it was safe to dig and where it wasn’t. And then he refused to take a single coin for it, because, he said, stone doesn’t belong to a god just because he can hear it.

Greykeep was a ruin when my father came to it. Now there isn’t a richer kingdom in Avarra. The miners who work Damar’s seams own their own houses. The schools in Havenreach are free. Helena buys the castle’s meat from Ansgar at whatever price Ansgar asks, and Ansgar, knowing this, has never once asked a dishonest price. You can walk from the top of the hill to the bottom of the lower market and not see a single child without shoes.

I’d always taken all of that for granted, the way you take your own house for granted. Those two nights, sitting on the bottom step under the gold-veined arches with a ruby the size of an egg glinting over the head of a man who’d burned my wife’s mother’s archive, I didn’t take it for granted at all. I kept thinking: this is what he’s looking at. Odo. Malachar. Whoever sent the singing ships. This is what they want.

Not the gold. They have gold.

The fact that nobody here is afraid of the person standing next to them.

* * *

Aurelia came down on the third morning.

We felt her coming, the way we’d felt my father in the Ember Room. But it wasn’t like Father. Father comes like weather. Pressure. Thunder. The back of your neck going tight.

Aurelia came like morning.

It started with the light. The lamps in the gallery didn’t get brighter, exactly. Everything else did. The gray granite floor went warm and gold, the way stone looks in the first sun. The white marble of the arches went pink and then gold. The air filled up with a smell of roses and clean linen and something else, something I couldn’t name for a long time and finally realized was the smell of a sickroom after the fever breaks. Every bruise I had stopped aching. A cut on my thumb from the Ember Room, three days old, closed over and was gone.

And then I heard them.

I’d never heard them before. I don’t think anyone hears them unless she’s close, and means it. Voices. Thousands of them. Hundreds of thousands. All very far away, and very quiet, like a city heard from the top of a hill. Not words. Just the sound of people asking. A midwife in Hallowmere, at two in the morning, with her hands full. A surgeon in Lyradon, with a boy on the table who’d fallen off a roof. A nurse in Concordia, sitting by an old man’s bed, holding his hand while he died. A mother in a farmhouse somewhere, with a child burning up with fever, saying the only prayer she knew. A soldier, years after a war, asking to be forgiven for something no one else alive remembered.

All of them, at once, every hour of every day, everywhere in the world. Asking her.

That’s what Aurelia is. People forget, because she’s so quiet, and so kind, and sits by the cradles of babies and holds the hands of the dying, and brought my father to this world, and has never once raised her voice in Council. She’s the goddess of forgiveness, and compassion, and healing. Every doctor in the kingdoms prays to her. Every nurse. Every midwife. Every healer, every apothecary, every grandmother with a pot of willow-bark tea, every soldier who’s ever wanted to put something down and couldn’t, every one of them. And every prayer goes to her, and every prayer makes her stronger, and she’s been listening to them for longer than there have been kingdoms.

My father is a storm. Aurelia is the reason anyone survives one.

She came down the main stair barefoot, in a plain white dress, with her hair loose and the light coming off her in long soft waves, and stopped on the bottom step beside me, and put her hand on top of my head for a moment, the way she did when I was small.

”You haven’t slept,” she said.

”No.”

”No.” She looked across the lower hall at the big arch, and the Castellan in front of it, and the thin gray figure sitting in the gray beyond. ”Neither has he.”

My father came down the stair behind her. He’d slept. Not much, by the look of him. He stopped on the step above us.

”I’ve been thinking,” he said, ”about who asks.”

Aurelia didn’t turn around. ”So have I.”

”A man like that answers a question by opening a door. You told me that once. A long time ago.” He put his hands in his pockets. ”So whoever asks has to be able to stand in the door. Whatever comes through. Whatever he says. They have to be able to hear it and not be moved. Not be frightened. Not be angry.” He paused. ”They have to be able to forgive it.”

Aurelia was quiet for a long moment.

”I’ve stood in doors my whole life, Uriah,” she said at last. ”Your grandfather held one for two hundred and twenty-two years, and I stood on the other side of it for every one of them.” She stepped down off the last stair, onto the warm gold of the granite. ”Forgiveness is a door. It’s the only one I know how to keep.”

She looked back at my father.

”Say it,” she said.

My father looked at her for a long time. Then at the gate. Then back at her.

”You can ask him,” he said.

* * *

They came down to watch. All of them. Nobody sent for them. They just came, the way people come to a window when they hear something in the street.

Mother and Adriana, arm in arm. Helena, with a tray she’d forgotten she was carrying. Grandpa. Mary with her green book and Melody beside her with her arms folded. Caitlin. Carol, with Iselle. Seraphina, with little Uriah on her hip, very quiet for once, his eyes enormous in the gold light. Ignatius came through the little Concordia arch with Io and Lexander and Thora behind him. Loki, from nowhere, leaning on a pillar. Eleanor, with her spectacles pushed up on her forehead, standing very close to her gate.

Nobody said anything. They made a half circle on the warm granite, a little way back from the big arch, and waited.

Aurelia walked up to the Castellan.

”May I?” she said.

The Castellan looked at her. Then it took its metal hand off the brass plate of the left-hand pillar, very slowly, and stepped aside.

”Yes,” it said. ”You may.”

She stepped into the gate.

I’d never seen anyone walk into the throat of a gate and stop. People go through. That’s what gates are for. But Aurelia walked under the arch and into the gray, and three paces in, she stopped, and stood there in the middle of nothing with the light coming off her, and the gray around her went gold. Not all of it. Just a little circle, around her bare feet, like the circle a lamp makes on a floor at night.

Odo looked up at her.

He’d been sitting for two days. He didn’t get up. He just lifted his head and looked at her, and for the first time since I’d met him, at the green door of the narrow house by the salt steps, his face did something. I couldn’t have told you what. Something very small. The kind of thing a face does when the sun comes out after a long time.

”You’re going to ask me,” he said.

”Yes,” said Aurelia.

He let out a long breath. It sounded like relief.

”Ask,” he said. ”I’ll tell you. Everything. Exactly as I was given it. Where the rest of the line went, the pages I copied, who has them, who sent me, what they want with the boy.” His voice was very steady. ”Ask me what you want to know.”

Aurelia knelt down in front of him on the floor of the gate that wasn’t a floor, so that her face was level with his.

”I don’t want to know any of that,” she said. ”Not yet.”

He stared at her.

”I want to know your name,” said Aurelia. ”Not Odo. That’s the name on the door column. That’s the name they gave you when they taught you to write, when you were already grown, so that you could sign for letters in a house by the sea.” Her voice was very gentle. ”I want to know the name your mother called you. Before any of it. Before the chain.”

Odo didn’t move.

Something went across his face. I’d seen it before. I’d seen it on Severin, in Father’s hall, when the Castellan said a name sat on him like a coat on a chair. I’d seen it on Iselle, in the lower hall, the morning she said Iselle, daughter of Saba and the Castellan said there you are.

The look of someone who has been carrying something for so long they forgot it was heavy.

”I don’t,” he said slowly. ”I don’t think I...”

”You do,” said Aurelia. ”It’s still there. It’s always still there. Nobody can take it. They can only make you stop looking for it.” She held out her hands to him, palms up, in the gold light. ”Look for it. I’ll wait.”

He looked at her hands for a long, long time.

Then, very slowly, he unfolded his own hands from inside his long gray sleeves, and reached out, and put them in hers.

And the sleeve of his left arm slid back.

* * *

There was a mark on his wrist.

I’d known there would be. I think all of us had. All the way through Caitlin’s proof, all through the chase, all through two nights on the bottom step. He doesn’t belong to the Emperor. He belongs to the chain.

It wasn’t a link of iron, like the Lockwarden’s. It was burned into him. A brand. Two loops, one inside the other, joined at one side, the size of a coin, burned black and deep into the skin on the inside of his wrist, where the veins run, so old the scar had gone silver at the edges.

As Aurelia’s hands closed around his, it began to glow.

Dull red first, like a coal. Then brighter. Then a color I don’t have a word for, a dark burning color that wasn’t red or black or any color, that hurt to look at, the way the Ilvane cold had hurt to feel. The smell of hot iron filled the gate. Odo’s whole body went rigid. His mouth opened and no sound came out.

”Teo,” he said.

It came out of him like something torn. One word. A child’s name. The kind of name a mother calls up a stair.

”My name,” he said. ”Was Teo.”

And the brand on his wrist burned.

I’ve seen a lot of terrible things since the singing started. I’d never seen anything like that. It wasn’t fire. It was an oath. I knew it the way you know thunder is thunder. An oath, sworn a long time ago, by someone a great deal stronger than Odo, and burned into him so deep it had become part of the shape of him: you will not be anyone but what we made you. And he had just said his own name. Out loud. In front of everyone. And the oath was doing what it had been made to do.

It was killing him.

Aurelia didn’t let go.

I felt it. Everyone in the lower hall felt it. The gold light around her went from a lamp’s circle on a floor to a sunrise. It filled the gate. It came out through both arches and filled the lower hall and went up the stairs and out of the windows. The voices came with it, all of them, louder, closer, a hundred thousand people asking her to help, and help, and help, and she took them, every one, and poured them into the gray man on the floor of the gate. Every midwife. Every surgeon. Every nurse at every deathbed. Every grandmother with every pot of willow-bark tea. Healing. Compassion. Forgiveness. All of it, at once, into one thin man in a gray coat, against one small black mark on the inside of his wrist.

The brand fought her.

I watched it fight her. I watched the dark burning color push back against the gold, pulse by pulse, the way the white fire in the Ember Room had pushed back against my father’s winter. And I watched Aurelia, my great-great-grandmother, who brought my father to this world and has never once raised her voice in Council, kneel on the floor of a gate with her eyes shut and her teeth set and her hands locked around a dying man’s hands, and hold.

It was the strongest thing I’ve ever seen anyone do. Stronger than the lightning. Stronger than the Castellan’s hand on the gate.

The brand broke.

I heard it. A small, sharp sound, like ice cracking on a pond in the first thaw. The dark burning color stuttered, and dimmed, and went out. And the mark on the inside of Teo’s wrist was just a scar. Old, and silver at the edges, and dead. A shape somebody had once burned into a man, and nothing more.

* * *

The gold light went slowly back down, out of the windows, down the stairs, out of the lower hall, back into the gate, until it was just a circle again around Aurelia’s knees. The voices went back to being far away. I could breathe.

Teo was still sitting on the floor of the gate with his hands in hers.

He looked at his wrist for a long time. At the silver scar. He turned his hand over in hers, very slowly, the way you’d turn over something you’d found in a field and didn’t recognize.

Then he looked up at her, and he was crying.

Not like a man. Like a child. Silently, with his face open and the tears just running, the way little Uriah cries when he’s too tired to do it properly.

”It’s gone,” he said.

”It’s gone,” said Aurelia.

”I can’t feel them.” He looked down at himself. ”I could always feel them. Every minute. Pulling. Since I was...” He stopped. He frowned, as if trying to remember. ”Since I was a boy. A long time. A very long time.” He looked up at her. ”What year is it?”

Aurelia told him.

I watched him count. It took a while. His lips moved.

”A hundred and twelve years,” he said. Wonderingly. ”They put it on me when I was eleven. In a temple, in a town I don’t remember. They said I’d be useful. They said I’d never get tired, and never get old, and never get sick, as long as I wore it.” He looked at the scar. ”They were right. I never did.”

And I saw it start.

It was very gentle. Not like the brand. Not like anything that hurt. It was just time. A hundred and twelve years of it, that had been held back behind that small black mark the way the Ilvane was held back behind the grip in the mountains, coming down all at once, now that the grip was gone. His hair went gray, and then white. The lines came into his forgettable face, one after another, and for the first time it was a face you could remember. A thin, tired, kind old face, with a long nose and a mouth that looked as though it had wanted to laugh once, a long time ago, and never been allowed to.

Aurelia saw it too. Her hands tightened on his.

”I can hold it,” she said quietly. ”I can heal you. I can give you years. Not a hundred and twelve. But years.”

He looked at her for a long moment.

”Will you ask me?” he said. ”First?”

Aurelia was very still.

”Teo,” she said. ”What do you want?”

The whole lower hall was silent. I don’t think anyone breathed.

”I want to stop,” said Teo. ”I’ve been held for a hundred and twelve years. I’m very tired.” He looked down at their hands. ”Please don’t hold me too.”

Aurelia closed her eyes.

I’ve never seen her cry. Not at the stream. Not at any funeral. Not when Grandpa had the fever and we thought he’d go. She’s the one who sits with everyone else while they cry. But she knelt there in the gate with the old man’s hands in hers, and the tears ran down her face, and she didn’t stop them.

”Yes,” she said. ”You can stop. I won’t hold you.”

He smiled at her. It changed his whole face. It was the face of an eleven-year-old boy in a town he didn’t remember, the morning before somebody came to the temple and told him he’d be useful.

”You were going to ask me where the rest of the line went,” he said. ”And who sent me. And what they want.”

”I was going to.”

”I’ll tell you one thing,” said Teo. ”Not because you asked. Because I want to. Because it’s mine to give, and I’ve never had anything that was mine to give.” He leaned forward, very slightly, toward her, and toward the lower hall beyond her, and the half circle of people standing on the gold-lit granite. His eyes found mine.

”There was a little one in me,” he said. ”The whole time. Not a god of theirs. A small one. A frightened one. Nobody ever noticed it, so they took it, and put it in me, so nobody would ever notice me.” His voice was getting very faint. ”It’s not theirs either. It never was. Somebody should ask it its name.”

He looked back at Aurelia.

”That’s all,” he said. ”The rest isn’t mine. I’d like the last thing I say to be mine.”

”Then say it,” said Aurelia.

Teo looked at her for a long moment, with his white hair and his old face and his hands in hers.

”Thank you,” he said. ”For asking.”

And then he stopped.

* * *

Nobody moved for a long time.

Aurelia stayed kneeling on the floor of the gate with his hands in hers. Then, very gently, she laid them in his lap, one over the other, the left one on top, so that the silver scar on the inside of the wrist was turned up to the light. She closed his eyes. She stood up.

”Teo,” she said, to the lower hall. Clearly. So that everyone could hear it. ”His name was Teo. He was eleven when they took it from him. He gave it back today.”

Mary opened her green book and wrote. I didn’t need to look to know what.

And then, very quietly, from the gate, something moved.

It came out of Teo. Not out of his mouth, or his chest. Out of the edge of him. The place where your eye goes when you look just to the side of something. It was small. Very small. About the size of a moth, or a sparrow, or a breath on a cold morning. Gray. Soft. Not a shape you could draw. A sort of flicker at the corner of the world.

My eyes started to slide off it.

I made them stop.

So did everyone else. I watched it happen, all around the half circle on the granite. My father. Mother. Adriana. Carol. Seraphina. Helena with her tray. Every one of them set their jaw and looked, the way Seraphina had made herself look at me across the kitchen table, past whatever was pushing at their eyes. They’d all heard Teo. Nobody ever noticed it. And not one of them was going to be the next.

Little Uriah, on Seraphina’s hip, pointed straight at it with one fat finger, and laughed.

The little gray thing went very still in the middle of the gate. Like a mouse when a door opens. As if it had never in all its life been looked at by this many people at once, and didn’t know what to do.

The Castellan looked at it for a long moment.

Then it turned, slowly, and went back to its ledger for the first time in two days, and picked up its pen.

I knew what it was going to write before it wrote it. I’d read the paper Eleanor keeps in her drawer with the key to my notebook. The same line, nine times, in the Castellan’s neat printed hand, from the morning it found the place on the east wall it couldn’t remember. East wall. Between the third and fourth windows. Something.

It dipped the pen. It wrote.

Something. In my gate.

And underneath, after a long moment, in the same neat hand:

Seen.
