The Greykeep Chronicles

I did not run. I want that written down, because I wanted to, very badly, and I didn’t.

I walked. Across the blue court, past the end of the long tables, past Thor telling her sea-serpent story and Mother pouring wine and little Mirelle asleep across two chairs with her head in Faelan’s lap. Through the arch by the kitchen passage. Down the back stair, the narrow one the servants use, which comes out at the bottom of the castle by the old cellars. And only then, when there was nobody left to see, did I start taking the steps two at a time.

The lower hall is the oldest part of Greykeep. It was a cistern once, Father says, before he came. Now it’s a long vaulted room under the great hall, with a stone floor worn smooth in paths and a row of plain arches down one side. Six of them. Six gates. Lyradon, Concordia, the two southern towns, Greymere and Orselle together on one arch because they’re close enough to share, and Westmere at the end, the smallest. Each with its brass plate beside it. Each with its ledger on its stand.

At night the lower hall is lit by a single lamp at each end, hung high, and the arches stand in a long row of shadow between them, like doorways into nothing.

He was not there.

I stood at the bottom of the back stair and looked down the whole length of the hall. The arches. The ledgers. The brass plates, gleaming faintly where the lamplight reached them, and Eleanor’s new name-knots cut under every closing mark, still bright from the chisel. Nothing moved. Nothing had been disturbed. Every ledger was closed.

I put my hand against the nearest arch, the Lyradon one, and felt for it the way I do. The fold, pinned open. Tight and steady and fine, exactly as it had been when Eleanor and I came back through it a week ago. I went down the row. Concordia. The southern towns. Greymere and Orselle. Westmere, last, small and warm and humming faintly with the Hold on the other side.

Nobody had touched them. I could feel that much. A gate remembers a hand the way water remembers a stone thrown into it. They were all still.

Then I heard a voice.

It came from the far end of the hall, past the Westmere arch, where the lower hall narrows and turns a corner into a short passage that most people in the castle have never had any reason to go down. It was very quiet. Level, and precise. A voice I knew better than my own.

”No,” said the Castellan.

* * *

The passage beyond the Westmere arch goes about twenty feet and stops at a door.

It is not an impressive door. Oak, iron-banded, with a plain iron ring for a handle and no lock that anyone has ever seen. You would walk past it in any other castle. But I have never walked past it in mine, not once in my whole life, because I know what’s behind it.

The archive.

Every ledger the gates have ever filled. Every plan Eleanor has ever drawn of every ward she has ever cut. Every letter Mary has decided is too important to keep anywhere else. Copies of all of it, and some things there are no copies of, kept in a long cool room under the castle where the air is dry and the light is always the same. Mary has a key she has never needed. Eleanor has one too. And in the archive, on a shelf by itself, in a folder bound with black ribbon, was the fair copy Wynn Harlow had made of my notebook from the sea, in his beautiful hand, every line of the backward script and the one great letter written on the water.

The Castellan was standing in front of the archive door.

It filled the passage. I had never thought of it as large before. It is tall, but narrow, and it moves so quietly that you forget it is there. But it was standing square in front of that plain oak door with its back to the iron ring and its metal hands folded in front of it, and the passage was not wide enough for anything to go past it. Not a man. Not a cat. Not a draft.

Severin Dask was standing in front of it.

He had his back to me. He was perhaps six feet from the Castellan, in his gray coat, with his gloved hands loose at his sides, and he was perfectly still. He had not heard me come. Or he had, and did not care.

”I’m a guest of this house,” he said. Quite gently. The way you might remind a friend of something they had forgotten. ”You said so yourself, at the gate. Ansel has said so.”

”You are a guest of the house,” said the Castellan.

”Then...”

”This door is not the house.”

Severin was quiet for a moment.

”What is it, then?”

”It is mine,” said the Castellan.

I have known the Castellan my whole life. I have heard it say a great many things in that level, precise voice. I have heard it announce kings, and correct Mary’s arithmetic, and tell Helena that the eggs were three short, and inform my father, once, when I was nine, that a dragon was sitting on the chapel roof and would not come down. I had never once heard it say that anything was its.

”I see,” said Severin.

”I do not know you,” said the Castellan. ”I have looked. At the gate. In the hall. At the table tonight, from the arch, for an hour and ten minutes. I know the name you are called by. I cannot find you behind it.” Its blank gray face did not move. ”I do not open my doors to people I cannot find.”

Severin stood there a moment longer.

Then he did something I did not expect. He bowed. Not the short, precise bow he gave to kings. A deeper one, slower, all the way from the waist, with one hand flat against his chest, the way you might bow to an old priest at a shrine.

”That’s fair,” he said. ”That’s entirely fair. I’d do the same.”

He straightened. He turned around.

And saw me.

He did not look surprised. He looked, if anything, a little relieved, like a man who has been walking alone down a dark road and hears footsteps and turns and finds that it’s only someone he knows.

”Prince Garrick,” he said. ”Did Loki send you?”

”Loki told me you’d gone down.”

”Loki,” said Severin, ”is a very dangerous man to have a pleasant dinner with.” He came down the passage toward me, unhurried. Behind him, the Castellan did not move from the door. ”I wanted to see your gates. I’ve heard about them for years. Everyone in Kethra who knows anything has heard about the King of Greykeep’s gates. I couldn’t come all this way and not look.”

”And the archive?”

He paused beside me, at the mouth of the passage, with the Westmere arch at his shoulder.

”I wanted to look at that too,” he said. ”Obviously.” He glanced back at the Castellan, standing square in front of its door in the dark. ”I don’t think I’m going to.”

”No,” I said. ”I don’t think you are.”

* * *

We went up together.

Not the back stair. The main one, the broad stone stair that comes up from the lower hall into the entrance court, under the old portcullis. I think he chose it on purpose. A guest who has been caught somewhere he should not be goes up the main stair, in the open, where everyone can see him come. It’s what I would have done.

He climbed slowly. I matched him. Above us, through the arch at the top, I could hear the dinner still going on in the inner court: Thor’s laugh, and the clatter of plates, and somebody singing badly. The blue of the lanterns spilled down the top few steps like water.

”You almost came at me,” Severin said. ”Two days ago. In the hall.”

I didn’t answer for a few steps.

”Yes,” I said.

”I felt it. The air went strange. Like standing on a frozen pond and hearing it creak.” He glanced at me sideways. ”I’ve been in rooms with a great many dangerous people, Prince Garrick. Generals. Assassins. Two gods, once, who were very angry with each other. I don’t think I’ve ever been closer to dying than I was for about a second and a half that morning.”

”No,” I said. ”I don’t think you have.”

He nodded, as if I had confirmed a figure in a ledger.

”Why didn’t you?” he said.

I stopped on the stair.

He stopped too, a step above me, and turned, and looked down at me with that narrow tired clever face, and I could see he actually wanted to know. Not as a spy. Not as an envoy. As a man who had been wondering about something for two days and could not work it out.

”My wife said my name,” I said.

He waited. When I didn’t go on, he said, ”That’s all?”

”That’s all.”

”She said your name, and you stopped.”

”Yes.”

Severin looked at me for a long moment. The noise of the dinner came down the stair, and the blue light, and somewhere far off, a dog barking down in the town.

”In Kethra,” he said slowly, ”nobody says the Emperor’s name. Not to his face. Not in his hearing. It isn’t forbidden. It’s just... not done. We say His Radiance. We say the Emperor. We say He Who Holds.” He looked down at his gloved hands. ”I’ve served him for a very long time. I have never once heard anyone call him by his name. I said it in your hall the other day, telling you the story of a boy in a river town. It was the first time I had said it out loud in twenty years. It felt very strange in my mouth.”

He was quiet for a moment.

”I wonder,” he said, ”what he would do. If someone did.”

I didn’t have an answer for that. I don’t think he expected one.

He turned and went on up the stair. After a moment, I followed him.

At the top, under the portcullis, with the blue lanterns over our heads and the whole inner court spread out in front of us, he stopped once more.

”For what it’s worth,” he said, without looking at me, ”I didn’t touch anything. In the lower hall. Your gates, your plates, your ledgers. I looked. I looked at everything very carefully, for a very long time. But I didn’t touch.” He paused. ”Looking is free. Even here.”

”Is it?” I said.

He glanced back at me then. And for the third time that night, I saw it. That thing that crossed his face when he wasn’t watching it. It wasn’t quite a smile.

”No,” he admitted. ”I suppose it isn’t.”

He went back to his place at the long table, and sat down beside Loki, who handed him his cup without a word. Iselle’s place at the far end was empty. She had already gone up.

I stood under the portcullis and watched him drink.

I didn’t believe him. I want to be honest about that. I didn’t believe he’d only looked. A man like that doesn’t go down to the lower hall in the middle of a feast to admire the brasswork.

But I believed him about the name. I don’t know why. I just did.

* * *

Eleanor found me before breakfast.

I was in the little kitchen, which is where everyone ends up before breakfast, sitting at the scrubbed table with a cup of Helena’s tea and little Uriah on my knee trying to eat a spoon. Helena was at the stove. Seraphina was still asleep. Eleanor came in through the garden door without knocking, in her old brown coat with ink on the cuffs, and sat down across from me, and Helena put a cup in front of her without being asked.

She looked as if she had not slept.

”You went down last night,” she said.

”Loki told me he’d gone.”

”I know.” She took off her spectacles and rubbed the bridge of her nose. ”I was there.”

I stared at her.

”I didn’t go to the dinner,” said Eleanor. ”I sent my apologies. I said my back was bad. Helena knew.” Helena, at the stove, did not turn around. ”I took a stool and a blanket and I sat down in the far corner of the lower hall, behind the Concordia arch, where the old wobble is, where the lamplight doesn’t reach. I’ve sat there before. When I’m thinking. Nobody ever looks there.”

”You thought he’d come.”

”I knew he’d come.” She put her spectacles back on. ”A man who looks at a wall the way he does was always going to come and look at my plates. I wanted to see what he looked at first.”

Little Uriah dropped the spoon. I picked it up and gave it back to him, and he put it straight back in his mouth.

”What did he look at?”

”Everything,” said Eleanor. ”That’s what frightened me.” She wrapped both hands around her cup. ”He came down the back stair a little after the second course. Very quietly. He stood at the bottom for a long time, just looking down the hall, the way you did when you came. Then he went to the first arch. Lyradon. And he read it.”

”Read it?”

”The plate. Every line. He bent down until his nose was nearly on the brass, the same way I do, and he went along it from the first mark to the last, slowly, with his lips moving. Garrick, he was reading it. Not looking at it. Reading. Like a man reading a letter in a language he learned as a child and hasn’t used in years.” Her mouth went thin. ”He went down the whole row. Forty minutes. Every plate. He never touched one. He kept his hands behind his back the whole time, like a man in a shop full of glass.”

”He told me he didn’t touch anything.”

”He didn’t. I’ll give him that.” Eleanor looked down into her tea. ”He stood at Westmere the longest. Nearly ten minutes. He read the closing mark, and then he read my name underneath it. The knot. I watched him read it. And then he took his glove off.”

The back of my neck went cold.

”He held his bare hand up,” said Eleanor, ”about an inch from the plate. Over my name. Not touching. Just... holding it there. The way you’d hold your hand over a stove to see if it’s hot.” She was quiet for a moment. ”And then he smiled. And put his glove back on. And went straight down the passage to the archive door, without looking left or right, as if he’d known exactly where it was for years.”

”Who told him?”

”I don’t know.” Eleanor looked up at me, and her eyes behind the steel spectacles were very tired, and very hard. ”Nobody in this castle goes down that passage but me and Mary and Wynn and the Castellan. And you. I’ve never written it on a plan. Mary’s never written it in a letter. It’s not on the map in the map room. It isn’t anywhere.”

Nobody said anything for a while. Helena stirred the porridge. Little Uriah sucked on his spoon.

”Wynn was at the dinner?” I said. I don’t know why I asked. It just came out.

”No,” said Eleanor. ”He said he had a cold. He went home early.” She looked at me steadily. ”Why?”

”I don’t know,” I said, and that was true.

Eleanor held my eyes a moment longer. Then she looked away.

”He spent your whole feast reading my wards, Garrick,” she said quietly. ”And he didn’t need anyone to teach him the letters.”

* * *

The Castellan came to find me that afternoon.

I was on the east wall, in the nook, alone. Seraphina had taken little Uriah to see Lexander and Io, and I had come up to sit in the sun and not think, and I was failing at it. The Castellan came along the wall-walk from the north tower and stopped in front of me, and stood there with its metal hands folded.

”I did not recognize him,” it said.

”I know. I was there.”

”I wish to tell you why,” said the Castellan.

I sat up.

It is not like the Castellan to explain itself. It does what it does, and says what it says, and if you don’t understand, that is generally felt to be your problem. In twenty-three years I had never once heard it offer a reason for anything.

”When a person comes through my gate,” it said, ”I find them. It is what I do. I find the name, and behind the name, the person it belongs to. It is like... a key in a lock. The name fits the person, and turns, and I know them. Always. Even the gods. Even Loki, who has a great many names, and wears them all a little crooked. They are still his. They still fit.”

”And Severin?”

”Severin Dask is a name,” said the Castellan. ”I can hear it. I can write it down. But when I try to turn it, it does not fit the man. It slides. It sits on him the way a coat sits on a chair.” Its blank gray face turned toward the east wing, where the guest rooms were. ”Someone put that name on him. A long time ago. And he has worn it so long he has forgotten that it is not his.”

I sat very still on the warm stone.

”Then who is he?” I said.

”I do not know,” said the Castellan. ”That is what unrecognized means.” It was quiet for a moment. ”I have only met one other person in this house whose name does not fit.”

I knew before it said it.

”The girl,” said the Castellan. ”Iselle. But hers is different.” It paused, as if choosing its words, which I had also never seen it do. ”His slides because it was put on him. Hers slides because she is holding it on, very tightly, with both hands. Because there is another one underneath, and she does not want anyone to see it.”

It turned, and went back along the wall toward the north tower, in the sun.

I sat in the nook for a long time after it had gone. Below me, in the inner court, kitchen boys were taking down the blue lanterns one by one and packing them back into their straw. On the guest balcony of the east wing, the curtain was drawn.

Just Iselle, she had said. And paused, too long, before she said it.

I thought about a man wearing a name that wasn’t his like a coat on a chair. And a girl holding hers on with both hands. And somewhere across the sea, in a golden city lit by stolen storms, an emperor whose own name nobody had said aloud in twenty years.

Three people, I thought. One whose name doesn’t fit him, one holding hers on with both hands, and one whose name nobody dares to say.
