The Greykeep Chronicles

Aurelia had been gone for twelve days.

Nobody had said so out loud. Nobody needed to. When a goddess has sat by your cradle every night for the first year of your life, and walked the castle corridors every evening since, and put her hand on your head in passing at least once a day for twenty-three years, you notice when she isn’t there. It’s like a clock stopping in a room you didn’t know had a clock.

She left the night the Castellan wrote Something for the first time. She told Father she was going to walk the western shore, and she went, and she did not come back for the barge, or the audience, or the proposal, or the gift table in the lesser hall. Mary wrote her absence down every day, one line, in the corner of the page. A. still away.

On the twelfth evening, she came back.

I was in the inner court, carrying a basket of wooden horses up to the south solar for Grandpa Garrick, who had decided they needed sanding, all of them, at once, that evening. And the light changed. That’s the only way I can describe it. The sun was going down, and the court was already half in shadow, and then it wasn’t. It was full of a soft, late, golden light that came from nowhere in particular, and smelled faintly of roses, and the shadows in the corners went thin and kind, like the shadows in a room where someone has just lit a lamp.

She was standing by the fountain in the middle of the court. The old one, with the statue of the woman holding the open crown, that stood dry for centuries before Father came and has run every day since.

She was wearing the same white robe she always wears. She looked young, the way she always looks, until you met her eyes. Her feet were bare, and they were dusty, and there was salt dried white along the hem of her robe, in a line, as if she had been walking a long time at the edge of the sea.

She was looking at me.

”Garrick,” she said. ”Put down the horses. Go and find your sister, and Ignatius, and Seraphina. Bring them to the chapel.” She paused. ”And your father.”

I put down the horses.

”Is it time?” I said.

She smiled. It was a tired smile. I had never seen her look tired before.

”Yes,” she said. ”It’s time.”

The chapel stands on the south side of the inner court, with the round Council Hall built up against it like a younger sister leaning on an older one. It is a small, plain building. Older than anything else in Greykeep except the lower hall. Gray stone, a slate roof, a single bell in a little open tower, and inside, rows of plain wooden benches facing a plain stone table with nothing on it but candles.

There is no statue of Aurelia in her own chapel. She won’t allow one. Father tried, once, years ago, and she told him very gently that if he put her face on a block of stone, people would start praying to the stone, and she would much rather they prayed to each other.

The candles were lit when we came in. All of them. There must have been two hundred, on the table and in the iron racks along the walls and on the windowsills, and the whole chapel was full of warm, wavering light. Aurelia was sitting on the front bench, with her dusty feet tucked under her robe, like a girl waiting for a lesson to start.

We came in together. Carol first, then Ignatius, then Seraphina, then me. Father last. He closed the door behind him, and stood for a moment with his back to it, looking at her.

”You’ve been to the sea,” he said.

”I have.”

”You’ve got salt on your hem.”

”I know.” She looked down at it, and brushed at it absently. It didn’t come off. ”I walked a long way. Along the whole western shore, from the north cliffs down past Westmere and on to the last of the marshes. I was looking for someone.”

”Did you find them?”

Aurelia was quiet for a moment.

”No,” she said. ”Sit down. All of you. Please.”

We sat. On the bench in front of hers, turned around, the way we used to sit when we were small and she told us stories after supper. Carol and Ignatius on one end. Seraphina and me on the other. Father did not sit. He stood in the aisle with his arms folded, the way he does when something is about to hurt and he wants to meet it on his feet.

Ansel was already there. I hadn’t seen him when we came in. He was sitting at the very back, on the last bench, in the corner nearest the door, the way he always sits in the Council Hall. He did not say anything. He raised one hand, slightly, when I looked at him, and put it down again.

Aurelia looked at the four of us for a long time.

”I promised you,” she said, ”in the Council Hall, when the seal came back on my letter, that I would tell you about it when it was time.” She folded her hands in her lap. ”I have been putting it off. I want to be honest about that. I’ve been putting it off for twenty years, since the first letter went unanswered, because I hoped I would never have to tell anyone at all.”

She looked at Carol.

”And then something sang to you in the dark,” she said, ”and asked you for your name. And I knew I’d waited too long.”

* * *

”Kethra had gods,” Aurelia said. ”Once. As many as we have. More, maybe. It’s an old land, and old lands grow gods the way old walls grow moss.” She looked at the candles. ”Gods of rivers. Gods of particular hills. Gods of harvest and weather and the gate of a single town. Little gods of a single well, or a single lamp at a single crossroads, the way Morning was before Ansel asked him what he wanted to be called.”

At the back of the chapel, Ansel lowered his eyes.

”They were never kind to each other,” Aurelia went on. ”A thousand years of kingdoms at war, and every kingdom had its gods, and the gods went to war too. A river would dry up its neighbor’s valley for spite. A storm would be sent to flatten a rival’s harvest.” She was quiet for a moment. ”Envoy Severin told you about the famines. He told you the truth. What he didn’t tell you is that half of them were made on purpose.”

”And then Malachar,” said Father.

”And then Malachar.” Aurelia folded her hands. ”He saw what the gods of Kethra did to the people they were meant to care for. And he did something nobody had ever thought to do. He went to them, one by one, and he asked them to stop. To come to him. To be held.”

”And most of them said no,” said Carol softly. ”The first time.”

”Most of them said no. And then he asked again, small, and reasonable, and most of them said yes.” Aurelia nodded. ”Those are the held. The storms in the towers. The rivers in their channels. The harvest gods in his granaries. They’re fed, and safe, and quiet, and they will never be cruel again. They will never be anything again. They sit where he put them, the way a pot sits on a shelf.”

She looked down at her dusty feet.

”But that isn’t what I came to tell you about,” she said. ”I came to tell you about the ones who said yes the first time.”

* * *

The candles burned. Outside, very faintly, the chapel bell moved in a breath of wind and gave one soft note.

”Not many,” said Aurelia. ”A handful. Out of all the gods in Kethra, a handful. When Malachar came and asked them to be held, they didn’t argue. They didn’t make him ask twice.” Her voice went very quiet. ”They wept, and said yes, and at last, and went down on their knees.”

”Why?” said Seraphina.

”Because they were tired,” said Aurelia. ”Tired of wanting. Tired of being cruel and not knowing how to stop. Tired of deciding things. And here was someone who would decide for them. Forever.” She paused. ”There is a kind of god, and a kind of person, who would rather belong to someone than to themselves. It’s easier. It’s warm. You never have to choose anything again.”

”The first of them was a god of oaths. Kessavel. Before Malachar, he was the god every Kethran swore by. Marriages. Treaties. Debts. Every promise in that whole land was made in his name.” Aurelia looked at the candles. ”When Malachar asked him, he took the oldest oath he had ever witnessed, and forged it into a chain. A real one. Iron. And he put one end around his own wrist, and gave the other end to Malachar. And said, Hold this.”

Nobody moved.

”The others followed. Each of them made a link from something of their own, and joined it to Kessavel’s chain, and put it on.” Aurelia’s hands were folded very tightly now. ”Draum, the god of the drowning tides, who used to pull whole fishing fleets under for sport. A god of locks and keys. A god of fences. A goddess of the last breath before sleep. A dozen, perhaps. No more. And they wear their links openly, on their wrists or their throats, and they’re proud of them. They call themselves the Chained.”

”They’re prisoners,” said Ignatius.

”No,” said Aurelia. ”That’s the thing I need you to understand. They’re not prisoners. Prisoners want to be free. The Chained would tear apart anyone who tried to free them.” She looked at each of us in turn. ”The held are his granary, Ignatius. Quiet. Stored. The Chained are his hands. They go where he sends them. They carry his letters. They walk at the bow of his ships. And when someone tells him no the first time, it’s very often one of the Chained who goes back, smiling, to ask the second time. Small. Reasonable. In daylight.”

At the back of the chapel, Ansel had gone very still.

”Draum is out there now,” Aurelia said. ”Under the fleet. Holding the water flat. That’s why the ships don’t rock, Garrick. You saw it from the dragon. The sea was choppy and they sat on it like ornaments on a cloth. Draum was underneath, holding them up.”

I remembered. The gulls swinging wide around the ships, every one of them, like water around a rock. The chop running right up to the black wood. No reflection.

”Your letters,” said Father slowly. ”The first one. Before the Accord.”

”I sent it to every god in Kethra I could find.” Aurelia nodded. ”Held, Chained, free, all of them. I told them what we were trying to build here. A round hall. Forty chairs. No head. Gods who ask each other for things, and share, and stop when they’re told no, and can get up and walk out whenever they like.” She almost smiled. ”The held couldn’t answer. The free were too frightened. And the Chained...”

”Laughed?” said Carol.

”Didn’t bother.” Aurelia shook her head. ”To a god who has put his own wrist in iron and handed the chain to someone else, a chair you’re allowed to leave isn’t a gift. It’s an insult. It means nobody wants you enough to keep you.”

* * *

”And the third letter?” I said. ”The one that came back with the seal?”

”That one I sent to him,” said Aurelia. ”When we founded the Council. I asked him to come and sit in one of the forty chairs. Not at the head. There is no head. Just a chair. Like everyone else.” She was quiet for a moment. ”He sent back a blank page with a closed hand on it. It wasn’t an insult. It was an answer. I do not sit in chairs I am allowed to leave.”

”And the ones who said no twice?” said Seraphina. Her voice was very low. ”Severin said those cities aren’t on the map anymore. What happened to their gods?”

Aurelia looked at her for a long time.

”The Chained took them,” she said.

The candles wavered, all at once, as if a door had opened somewhere.

”A god who refuses to be held can’t be stored in a tower. There’s too much of them. Too much will. So the Chained take the part that refuses.” Aurelia’s voice did not change. That was the worst of it. It stayed gentle the whole time. ”Kessavel is a god of oaths. He knows exactly where a name sits in a god, the way a smith knows where the grain runs in iron. He takes the name. And what’s left can’t refuse anything anymore, because there’s nobody left inside to do the refusing.”

Nobody breathed.

”What’s left is hollow,” said Aurelia. ”And cold. And always hungry. And it sings, very softly, the same thing over and over, to anyone who’ll listen. It sings for a name. Any name. Anyone’s. Because a hollow god who’s given a name can wear it, and be someone again, for a little while.” She looked at Carol. ”They call them the Hollow Choir. The Chained keep them below decks on the black ships, the way you’d keep hounds. And when the ships come into a harbor where there are names, they let the Choir sing.”

”It asked me every night,” said Carol. Her voice was very steady. ”For weeks.”

”I know. And if you had answered, even once, even just to make it stop, there would be one more voice in that choir tonight, and it would be singing in yours.” Aurelia’s face broke open then, all at once, the way the sky breaks open at the end of a storm. ”You held on to your name with both hands, Carol Grey, alone, in the dark, with something cold at the foot of your bed asking and asking. I have known gods who couldn’t do that.” She reached out and put her hand on Carol’s head, the way she has done every day of our lives. ”I’m so proud of you I don’t know what to do with it.”

Carol put her face in her hands. Ignatius put his arm around her.

”Severin,” I said. I couldn’t stop myself. ”The Castellan says his name doesn’t fit him. That it was put on him.”

”The Castellan met me at the gate an hour ago and told me.” Aurelia was quiet for a moment. ”He wears no chain. I looked, at the quay, through other eyes, the day he came. And he isn’t hollow. Hollow things don’t look at their feet. They don’t wonder.” She shook her head slowly. ”I don’t know what he is. I think he’s something the Chained began, and didn’t finish.”

* * *

”Who were you looking for?” said Father. ”At the sea.”

Aurelia took her hand back from Carol’s head.

”There was a goddess of harbors in Kethra,” she said. ”A small one. Lamps on the ends of piers, and safe anchorage, and the moment when a ship comes home and the people on the quay see the sail. Her name was Selvane.” She smiled a little. ”She said no to Malachar. Twice. And when the Chained came for her, she ran. Not far. She stayed in the little harbors at the edges of Kethra, keeping the lamps lit, moving every night so they could never find the same light twice. One of the very last free gods in that whole land.”

”She carried your letters,” said Carol.

”All three. Across the sea, in the dark, with the Chained hunting her.” Aurelia looked at the salt on her hem. ”Every time, a little lamp would appear on the end of the pier at Westmere for one night, where there wasn’t a lamp before. That was how she told me they’d arrived.”

”And this time?”

”This time the ships came,” said Aurelia. ”With the Chained at their bows, and the Choir below their decks. And I went down to Westmere, and walked out to the end of the pier.” She was quiet. ”There was no lamp. I walked the whole shore. Every harbor. Every pier. Twelve days. There was no lamp anywhere.”

She stood, and went to the stone table, and took a fresh candle from the box beneath it, and lit it from one of the others. She set it down at the very end, a little apart from the rest.

”For Selvane,” she said. ”Wherever she is. Whoever’s holding her.”

We sat and watched it burn.

* * *

When we got up to go, Aurelia stopped Father at the door. I was right behind him. I heard.

”The ships are leaving,” she said quietly. ”Most of them. And most of the danger with them.” She looked past him, across the dark inner court, toward the east wing, where a single lamp burned behind the curtain of the guest balcony. ”But not all of it.”

Father followed her gaze. ”The girl.”

”The girl.” Aurelia’s voice was very gentle, and very sad. ”The Choir can only take a name from someone who doesn’t know how to hold on to it. Carol knew. Carol has known who she is since she was two years old.” She looked at the lit window. ”That child doesn’t know what she wants. She told Io so, in front of all of you. Nobody has ever asked me.”

She turned back to Father.

”You’re sending her to Concordia,” she said. ”To a college full of young people who know their own names and their own wants, and hold on to them with both hands without even thinking about it. And in the middle of them, one girl who was never taught how.” She paused. ”If I were one of the Chained, and I wanted a door into this kingdom, I wouldn’t knock on a gate. I’d wait for someone to leave one open.”

Father was very still.

”That,” said Aurelia, ”is the easiest door in the world.”
