Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

I had to ask the deepwater folk to save a world that had never once bothered to write them down, and they said no, and they were right to.

I want to start there, because I know how these stories usually go.

The hero finds the overlooked people with the ancient wisdom.

The overlooked people are delighted to hand it over.

Everybody learns something.

That is not what happened.

What happened is that I stood in a driftwood longhouse on the far islands and made my case, honestly, in the light, the way we do it — the whole truth, the whole cost, no leaning on anything — and an old woman heard me out to the end and told me to go home.

”You want the songs,” said Nai.

”I want to learn how you make them,” I said.

”Not the crossings. Those are yours. I want to know the craft. How you put a way into a song so it holds for a thousand years.”

”Same thing,” she said.

”You can’t have the craft without the songs; that’s like asking for the swimming without the water.”

She sat with her hands on her knees, weathered and unimpressed, exactly as she’d been in the storm.

”And here’s the rest of it, inlander, since you’re so fond of the whole truth.”

”A song isn’t a story. You can give away a story and still have it.”

”A song is how we don’t drown. Every one of them is a life-rope that four hundred people are hanging off. You are asking a people to hand their only rope to strangers and trust that it doesn’t fray.”

”I know.”

”Do you.” She said it flat. Not a question.

”Then know the other part too, and I’ll only say it once, and then we’ll have said it and we can be civil.”

And she said it, and I deserved every word.

”Your empire counted every road on that continent for a thousand years and never once counted us.”

”Your sects never sent a teacher to a single island. Your great records have every noble’s fourth cousin in them and not one way-singer, not one.”

”Nobody has ever come out here and asked us for anything, because there was nothing about us anybody wanted.”

Her eye was like a winter tide.

”And now the land is drowning. And the drowning land has come to the people it threw off the boat and asked to be taught to swim.”

There was nothing to say to that, so I didn’t say anything, which is a skill I have been slowly and expensively acquiring.

”No,” said Nai.

And that was that.

Here is the rule we live by, the one from Greywater, the one I would not break to save the world and have nearly had to: you offer the whole truth in the light, and then you let people choose, freely and awake, and if they choose against you, you lose.

Not sulk.

Not press.

Not go and find a cleverer angle.

Lose.

If I’d leaned on them, I’d have been Lu with better manners.

Lu also believes he’s helping.

That’s the entire horror of him.

So we started packing to go, and I meant it, and Yun Shu didn’t try to talk me out of it, and Bai Qing carried the pot down to the boats without a word, and I want you to understand that we were genuinely leaving with nothing, and the Unbinding was still eating the coast behind us, and I had no second plan at all.

And then the Scroll did something on its own, which it has done perhaps four times in four years, and it changed everything, and it wasn’t a trick.

DING — into the longhouse, gold and enormous, visible to nobody but me and audible in my voice because I read it out, because it asked me to.

”Before we go. Not as a trade. I want that said first and I want it said in front of everyone: this is not a trade, and nothing is asked, and if they throw us off the rocks tonight I will still have given it.”

”Way-singer. You told me you steer by a star you call the Homelight. That you have sung it every night for a thousand years without knowing what it is. That your young ones can barely find it now.”

”It has a name. Their name was Su Yue.”

”They were a nobody from a nowhere town who was chosen by a scroll much like me, and they became the brightest name that has ever been, and they spent every scrap of that light making small and unseen people real. That was the whole of what they were for. That was their entire life’s work.”

”Then they were erased, a thousand years ago, to hold back a thing that eats names — and the world forgot them entirely. Every sect. Every empire. Every record but mine.”

”I have kept a single ember of them alight for ten centuries and I believed, until three nights ago, that I was the only thing left in creation that knew they had existed.”

”I was wrong. You never stopped. You have sung them home every night for a thousand years.”

”The light they gave away to make the overlooked real was kept alive, in the end, only by the overlooked. Nobody else held it. Only you. That’s yours. It was always yours. I only came to tell you what you’ve been singing to.”

Nobody said anything for a long time.

Somewhere outside a boat knocked against a jetty.

And then Nai got up and went out of the longhouse, and stood on the rocks in the dark looking at the top of the sky for a very long while, and her people left her alone, and so did we.

She came back in near dawn.

Her face had done something I couldn’t read.

”Su Yue,” she said.

”Su Yue,” I said.

”Thousand years and it turns out we know them better than anybody alive.” She sat down heavily.

”I’d like to say we’re doing this because you’ve moved me. We’re not. I’ve been moved before; I’m seventy-one and it never once put bread on a rock.” She looked up.

”We’ll do it for three reasons and I’ll give you all three so nobody has to guess later.”

”One. The far ends of our songs have been going thin for years. Something’s been eating our edges too, and now I know what it is and what it’s called, and it turns out this isn’t your war we’re joining, it’s ours, and we’ve been losing it slowly in the dark without a name for it. I’ll not do that again.”

”Two. Somebody put a light where my grandmother’s grandmother could find it. We have steered by a stranger’s kindness for a thousand years and never paid a copper for it. That’s a debt. My people pay debts, and we don’t like owing anybody, especially inlanders.”

”Three—” and here something crossed her cliff of a face that was almost a smile, and it was a hard one, ”—your archivist thinks we’re too small to matter. I have been told I was too small to matter my whole life by better men than him. I would like, once before I die, to be the size of a very large problem.”

Then she stood up and became, without any transition at all, the most terrifying schoolteacher I have ever met in my life.

”Right. If you’re going to make ways out of songs, you’ll do it properly, or you’ll drown people and blame the water. Sit down. All of you. Sit down, demon-slayer, you’re not special out here.”

So here is the craft, as it was beaten into us over eleven days on a rock at the edge of the world.

I’m going to lay it out plainly, because it is the most useful thing in this entire book and because a thousand years of drowned people paid for it.

A way-song must be useful.

Not a song about the road.

A song that is the road.

It has to carry the real thing — the turn at the split oak, the ford that’s safe in summer and kills you in spring, the name of the family at the far end who’ll take you in.

A song that’s only pretty is a song people stop singing, and a song people stop singing is already gone.

A way-song must be sung by everyone.

Not by a guild.

Not by the old.

If only the way-singers know the ways, then the ways die with the way-singers, and Nai said that like a woman who has buried people.

Children sing it.

Drunks sing it.

The market sings it.

It lives in the whole town or it doesn’t live.

A way-song must be sung every night.

This is the hard one.

This is the one that costs.

Not remembered — sung.

Out loud, regularly, forever, because a thing you only remember is a thing that’s already started to go, and by the time you notice it’s slipping, it’s slipped.

And a way-song must never, ever be written down.

Nai was blunt about this and gave the practical reason, and it was so much better than the mystical one I was braced for:

”Paper burns, paper rots, paper gets wet, and paper makes people lazy.”

”Give a man a chart and he stops learning the water. Then one day the chart’s gone and so’s he.” She shrugged.

”We worked that out a thousand years ago and it saved us. Seems it’s about to save you too, for a completely different reason. That’s luck, not wisdom. Don’t get proud about it.”

I sat on that rock and thought about a small mild man in a records room in a river bend, working his way down a list, and I thought: he can only cut what’s on the list.

And a song in ten thousand mouths is not on anybody’s list.

We tested it at Two Willows, because I wanted to go back to the market where I’d stood feeling the arithmetic in my body, and because of the eggs.

You remember.

The valley in the hill country we’d reached thirty-six hours too late; the woman who brought too many eggs to market every week for a cousin across the ridge in Threewells, a cousin she could no longer hold, on a road that had stopped being a road anybody had a reason to walk.

It went like this, and it’s the whole gospel finally assembled and working in one place, and I’d like it on the record.

Yun Shu found the residue and reconstructed the truth.

Market tallies, the ferry log, twenty years of a standing order for eight eggs a week.

She built the road back out of paperwork the way she once built erased children back out of grief-shaped holes, and she laid it in front of the town: there is a place over that ridge, and here is what it is called, and here is who is in it, and here is the proof.

Then we offered it, in the light, and let them choose.

Nobody was made to take it back.

Some didn’t, at first.

It’s a strange thing to be handed a cousin.

Then Mu Chen helped them carry it, because it is not a small thing to be told that a piece of your life was quietly amputated four months ago and nobody noticed, and some people took that hard, and he sat with every one of them.

And then — the new part — Ji Lan made it a song, so it could never be cut again.

She’d walked back from her barns for this.

She’d been out in the western valleys telling forty people at a time about a net-mender called Ru, and she came over the hill into Two Willows with her boots destroyed and her hair a professional disaster and she listened to the whole problem for about ninety seconds and said, ”Oh, eggs, right, fine,” and went and sat under a tree.

What she came back with was, I am sorry to report, extremely stupid.

It was a counting song.

The kind children use for skipping.

It went eight eggs over the ridge and down, and it had the split oak in it, and the ford, and the fact that you go left at the ford in spring or you go in the water, and it had the cousin’s whole name in the last line where the rhyme lands hardest so you physically cannot sing the song without saying who she is.

It was catchy in the way that makes you want to be dead.

By the third evening every child in Two Willows was screaming it in the lanes and it had crossed the ridge on its own legs and the Threewells children were screaming it back, with a rude second verse.

It is possibly the most important song in the history of the world.

It is about eggs.

”This is the finest work I have ever done,” Ji Lan said, watching a nine-year-old bellow her masterpiece at a goat.

”Thirty years of craft. Every technique I own. Nobody will ever know I wrote it and I can never sign it and if it works it will outlive every beautiful thing I ever put my name on.”

She was quiet for a second.

”I have never been happier. I want that noted, and I want it noted that I’m furious about it.”

Yun Shu was the one who found the problem, because Yun Shu is the one who finds the problem; it is her function and her curse.

”It’ll drift,” she said that night, flat as a plank.

”Songs drift. That’s what songs do. Twenty years from now the ford will be in the wrong verse and somebody’s grandchild will drown in spring because the tune changed.”

She was holding herself very straight.

”I ran the Accuracy Division for eleven years. My entire life is that a true thing has to stay exactly true. And we’re about to hang the world’s roads on a medium that mutates every time it’s sung.”

Nai heard her out with real respect — she’d taken to Yun Shu instantly, two women who have no patience for anything — and then said, ”Aye. It drifts. That’s why the fleet sings.”

”Meaning?”

”Meaning nobody sings alone. Four hundred people sing the same crossing every night. When one boat comes back with a verse gone crooked, four hundred mouths are already singing it straight, and the crooked one gets rubbed off like a burr on a rope. Drift’s not the danger. Drift’s caught.” She shrugged.

”One singer, the song rots. A whole island, the song self-corrects. That’s the only reason it’s held a thousand years.”

And I watched my partner — the most rigorous mind I have ever known, a woman who once opened two hundred separate cases to prove me a fraud — turn that over, and turn it over again, and go slightly pale, and then start to laugh in that dry way she has, which is very rare and worth a great deal.

”So the fact-checking,” she said, ”is done by everybody. At once. Forever.”

”Aye.”

”I spent eleven years,” said Yun Shu, ”trying to be the person who kept the record straight.” She wiped her eyes with the back of her wrist and was immediately embarrassed about it.

”And the actual answer is the whole town, out loud, every night, and nobody in charge.”

”Aye,” said Nai, quite kindly.

”Nobody in charge. That’s the trick. Nothing to take.”

— • —

It spread, and it spread the way everything in this movement spreads, which is to say sideways and unstoppably and with nobody’s permission.

Tao Tao took to it the way I have never seen my fierce junior take to anything — she’d founded a movement with no head on purpose, and here was a technology with no head, and she went off across three provinces teaching towns to sing their own roads with an evangelical fury that frightened people.

Ma Jun’s couriers carried song-teachers over the passes.

The girl with the ruined boots went east with three of the new road-songs in her and a fourth she’d made herself, and somewhere in there I finally, four months late, asked her name, because I’d been calling her the girl with the bad boots in my own head for a season, in a book about names, which is exactly the kind of thing I do.

Qiu Yan.

Nineteen.

Terrible boots.

Remember her; I intend to.

And on the eleventh night, the Scroll:

Talent. Your Renown is climbing. Properly. Not a hair — climbing. Belief is TRAVELLING again, in the one medium he did not think to fear, because it is sung by children and lives in nobody’s vault. I want to be honest about the cost, because I have promised to be a better record than I was. You are getting brighter. And you know the rule. 👍

I knew the rule.

Brightness wakes the dark.

It always has.

And out on the black water past the jetty, the cold came in gentle, the way it does, and said the only thing it had left to say to a world learning to sing.

Every night? it asked, and it was so sad, and it meant it.

Forever? You must sing your own roads, out loud, every night of your lives, or lose them. That is not a rescue. That is a rope you have tied to your own hands.

I would never ask so much of you, said the dark. I only ever asked you to stop.
