Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Lu stopped trying to break us, in the end, because breaking us kept making us stronger. So he did something worse. He started subtracting the world.

The first sign was the quiet. The Rememberers spread the way water spreads — no center, no leader, fire to fire, a thing you can’t cut the head off because it hasn’t got one. And that whole engine runs on people answering. You come to a town, you say a name, and someone across the fire says it back, and the story lives another day. That’s the whole machine. And in the Mourning Downs, one week, the answering stopped.

Not violently. That’s what took us so long to understand it, and what makes it the coldest thing in this whole book. Nobody burned the Mourning Downs. Nobody blanked it by force. The people there simply, gradually, over a season of the Forgetters going patiently door to door, chose to rest. First they stopped answering the Rememberers. Then they stopped keeping their own dead. Then they stopped remembering the war, and the Empire, and eventually — Yun Shu confirmed it and her voice went flat as a stone when she did — they stopped remembering me. A whole region, a hundred towns and more, gently and freely deciding to set down everything they were carrying and walk on light. A mass rest. A country that chose to sleep.

”He’s changed the shape of the war again,” said Xue Ningzhi, and even she was grim. ”Stop looking for the atrocity, Lin Bo; there isn’t one this time. He’s learned. He tried to split us into hatred and we grieved together and it made us stronger, so he’s stopped attacking us at all.”

She spread the map, and the Mourning Downs sat on it grey and silent as a held breath. ”He’s not fighting the Rememberers anymore. He’s removing the people who would remember. And think about what that does to your one and only weapon.”

She let it land. ”The only thing that beats the dark is the whole world remembering at once. Every soul, together. You cannot do that if whole provinces have quietly gone blank. He is not trying to beat the light. He is turning off the lamps one region at a time, so that when you finally strike the match, half the world is already too dark to catch.”

And then she told me the part that turned the darkest hour all the way to its bottom, and I have to make you understand it, because it’s the thing that made the Mourning Downs not just sad but a front.

Where the people chose to forget, the Editor got a foothold.

That’s the mechanism, and it’s monstrous in its simplicity. A person who freely sets down their memory opens a little door in themselves — a hollow where the holding used to be. And the Editor’s silence, which has been leaning on every door in the world since before the first story, doesn’t need to force that door; it’s been opened from the inside. So the silence pours into the hollow the free forgetting made — and once it’s in, it doesn’t stop at the ones who chose. It spreads. Out from the sleeping heart of the Mourning Downs, into the towns at the edges, it was blanking people who had not chosen anything at all — the involuntary erasure following the voluntary rest like cold water following a crack. The free forgetting was the beachhead. The Editor’s silence was the army coming ashore behind it.

Lu had found a way to invite the dark in through the front door, using nothing but exhausted people’s own free choice to hold it open.

”He’s not the danger here,” said Xue Ningzhi quietly. ”He’s the door. The thing coming through it is the danger. And it is already through.”

So we went into the Mourning Downs, and I found out what I am when nobody knows me.

I want to tell this part carefully, because it is the lowest I have ever been in this whole strange life, lower than the reeds at Sedgewater, lower than the gate at Cairnhold, and it happened quietly, on an ordinary road, in about the space of a mile.

I felt it start as we crossed the border of the Downs. A thinning. Like walking into cold water a step at a time, except the thing getting cold was me — the great warm roar of belief that I have carried since a candle exhibition a hundred Chapters ago, the thing that makes me the strongest being that has ever lived. It got quieter. And quieter. Because that power was never mine, not really. It’s belief, and belief is real here, and it lives in the people who believe. And I was walking into a country that had chosen to believe in nothing at all.

DING.

NEW LEGEND PUBLISHED.REACH: 1 Soul.BELIEF: 0%.Talent, your Renown is falling. Not everywhere. Understand me — across the world you are still near the top of Mythic, still the brightest thing alive, that hasn’t changed. But power is local to belief, and right here, on this road, inside the Downs—They don’t know you.Every step you take deeper in, fewer souls around you hold a single story about you, and so right here, in this place, you are getting weaker. I am watching the strongest being that has ever lived thin out into an ordinary man, and there is nothing I can publish to stop it, because you cannot publish to people who have decided not to read.

By the time we reached the first village, I was just Lin Bo. A tired ex-clerk with sore feet. The muscle had gone out of the world’s arm and left mine, which had never been much. I could feel where the Mythic strength had been the way you feel a missing tooth — a place my tongue kept going back to that wasn’t there anymore. Bai Qing walked close on one side and Yun Shu on the other, not saying anything, and I understood they were guarding me, which they have not had to do since Book One, and I have never felt so small.

And the village. God, the village.

It was peaceful. That’s the horror I can’t get past. I keep wanting to tell you it was grim, a wasteland, obviously wrong — and it wasn’t. The Mourning Downs were the most peaceful place I have ever walked through. People sat in their doorways in the sun. Children played. There was bread baking. Nobody wept, because nobody had anything left to weep about, because they’d set it all down. A woman hung washing and hummed, and she was content, truly content, in a way almost no one in this suffering world ever gets to be — and she did not remember that she had ever had children, though there were two small graves behind her house that she stepped around without seeing, the way you step around furniture in a dark room you’ve stopped noticing.

There was a man tending a grave he did not know was a grave. He kept it clear of weeds. He couldn’t have told you whose it was, or why he came every day, or why his hands shook when he touched the stone. He just knew that this was a thing he did, and it gave him a quiet he couldn’t name, and he was, in his blank and gentle way, at peace.

That is what forgetting looks like when it wins. Not screaming. Not ruin. A woman humming over washing, at rest, with two graves she can’t see. It is the most merciful-looking thing in the world.

And that’s when the Editor spoke to me, and it had never been so gentle, because it had never been so sure it was right.

’Look,’ it said, soft as the sun on the washing. ’Look how peaceful. No one weeps in the Mourning Downs. No one lies awake. No one carries a weight too heavy to bear, because they have set it down, every one of them, freely, and I have simply let them rest. You call it a country that has been robbed. Walk through it. Where is the suffering? Where is the harm? You have spent your whole life insisting that people must carry their grief — that the love is worth the weight. And here is a country that put the weight down, and they are happy, Lin Bo, happier than your Rememberers with their fires full of names and their eyes full of tears. Which of us, really, is the kind one?’

And here is the thing I have to be honest about, all the way to the bottom of the page, the way I promised on the very first one.

I did not have an answer.

I stood in that peaceful humming village, weak as a child, the roar gone out of me, looking at a contented woman and two graves she’d never weep over again, and the Editor’s voice was so gentle and the village was so calm and I was so tired — I have always been so tired, from the very first Chapter, that’s the one true thing about me — and for a long, long moment in the sun, I could not think of one single reason it was wrong.

The offer, again. The only thing I have ever wanted. Rest. And a whole country in front of me proving it could be had.

It was Yun Shu who moved me. She didn’t argue with the dark — you can’t, it’s too gentle to argue with — she just took my sleeve, the way you’d steer someone away from an edge they’ve gone quiet at the top of, and said, low, only to me, ”Not here. Come away from her washing-line. You’re listening to it because you’re weak and it knows you’re weak, and being weak isn’t the same as being wrong.”

And Bai Qing came up on the other side without a word and put her shoulder under mine like I was a man who’d been hurt, which I suppose I had, and the two of them walked me out of that humming village between them, one tired hollowed-out clerk who could not, in that sunlit peaceful street, remember why the dark was wrong — held up on both sides by two women who could, and who had decided they would carry the remembering for me until I was strong enough to carry it again myself. That’s the found family. That’s the whole thing. When you go so far down you can’t hold the light, somebody who loves you holds it for you, and walks you home.

We couldn’t force them. I need you to understand that this was never even a question, no matter how bad it got, because it’s the line that separates us from everything we fight. The Editor takes memory away without asking. The Empire took it away cruelly. And if we marched into the Mourning Downs and shoved their grief back down their throats — held them down and made them remember their dead children whether they wanted to or not — then we would simply be a third kind of thief, with a nicer speech, and I would rather lose than become that.

But you also cannot offer someone their memory back if they don’t know there’s anything missing. That was the trap of the Mourning Downs, snapping shut. You can’t say choose freely, in the light to a woman who doesn’t know she ever had children. There’s no choice to offer. There’s no her left to offer it to. The person who could have chosen is exactly the person the forgetting removed.

So we stood at the bottom of the pit that first night — me hollowed out and ordinary, Yun Shu grim, Bai Qing’s hand never far from me, the Editor’s edge eating the towns at the rim faster than we could count — and we had no way in. You cannot force memory on the willing, and you cannot offer it to people who don’t know they lost anything, and between those two walls there did not seem to be any road at all.

The strongest being alive sat weak and useless in a country that had forgotten him, and could not think of a single reason the dark was wrong, and did not know how to save one single soul.

That was the bottom.
