Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Here is the thing nobody tells you about deciding to walk, which is that walking is slow.

I know.

I know how that sounds.

We’d found the answer to the Unbinding — Tao Tao had banged it out of the map at midnight, be the thread, stop sending word and be word, a woman with a bag going over a hill is a road no pen can unwrite — and it was true, and it was beautiful, and I stand by every glowing thing I told you about it on the last page.

And it lost the race.

I have to tell you that up front, because I promised you honesty on the first page and I’m not going to start decorating things now.

A person walks forty miles a day, on a good day, on good feet, not sleeping much. Ji Lan told me.

Ji Lan was out doing it — my glamorous storyteller, who once put a phrase in the capital on Tuesday and heard it back off a western mountain by Monday, was walking valley to valley on her own two feet, standing in barns in front of forty people who couldn’t tell anyone, and loving it in that furious way she has. Forty miles a day.

Do you know how fast a pen moves down a list?

That’s the whole arithmetic of those weeks, and it broke us slowly, which is the worst way. Lu wasn’t burning towns anymore, wasn’t blanking them, wasn’t doing anything you could ride toward and stop. He was sitting in a records room in a river bend, working down Xue Ningzhi’s old route-registry line by line, unwriting the link between one place and the next — and every stroke of his pen cut a thread that had taken a human being nine days to walk. He could sever in an afternoon what we could stitch in a season. We were bailing a boat with a cup, and the hole was the size of the sea.

Let me show you what losing that race actually looked like, because a number on a page won’t do it, and I owe you the face.

There was a valley in the hill country called Two Willows, and we rode for it because the reports said the Unbinding hadn’t reached it yet, and we got there mid-morning with a storyteller and four of Ma Jun’s couriers to walk the thread on to the next place. And we came over the rise, and it was already gone.

Not burned. Not blanked. Gone the new way — every soul in it whole and hale and going about their morning, and not one of them able to hold that there was a Threewells a half-day down the valley, where half of them had cousins. The road out the south end just stopped being a road anybody had a reason to walk. We’d missed it by — Yun Shu checked the market tallies against the ferry log — by about a day and a half. Thirty-six hours. We’d killed two horses getting there and we were thirty-six hours too slow, and there was nothing to do, because you cannot un-cut a thread by standing in the place looking sad about it.

And a woman in the Two Willows market, selling the same eggs she’d sold across the ridge to her Threewells cousin every week for twenty years, had a basket of eggs she could no longer sell and could not say why she’d brought so many. She wasn’t upset. She just had too many eggs, every market day, forever, and a warm blank where a lifetime of a road used to be.

I stood in that market and felt the arithmetic in my body for the first time. We had the answer. The answer was true. And the answer walked at forty miles a day, and the pen did not walk, the pen flew, and there were a thousand Two Willows ahead of us and we would reach most of them a day and a half too late until the day we found a way to be faster than a man writing a list.

That night the Scroll totted it up, quiet, no like button, and told me we were reconnecting threads at perhaps one to Lu’s forty. One to forty. I have been behind before in this war. I had never been behind like that.

And it was heading for the sea. That’s the part it took Xue Ningzhi a while to see, and when she saw it she went very quiet, which by now you know is how she screams.

’West,’ she said. She’d spread the registry across three tables — her own registry, her twelve years of proud young work, the most complete map of how the world talks to itself that has ever existed, now the blueprint for its unmaking. She had one finger on it and it was not quite steady. ’He’s not working outward from the middle. He’s working west. Down the great post road, toward the coast, and he’s not slowing down.’

’Why west?’ said Tao Tao.

’Because the registry ends at the coast,’ said Xue Ningzhi. ’Think about what I built. Post roads. Ferries. Market circuits. Relay-houses. Every path belief walks across the land.’ She looked up, and her face had the colour it gets when she’s reading her own dark mirror. ’And at the western edge, it runs out. Because past the last quay there are no roads. There’s water. And I never mapped the water — nobody maps the water, there’s nothing on it to map, it’s just the empty edge where the land stops.’

I still didn’t understand. I said so. I’ve stopped pretending I understand things faster than I do; it wastes everyone’s time.

’He’s going to cut the world off from the sea,’ she said. ’Every link between the interior and the coast. And once the coast is severed from the inland, and the last quay can’t hold the name of a single town behind it—’ She stopped. ’Lin Bo. What’s past the sea?’

’I don’t know,’ I said. ’Nobody I’ve ever met has been past the sea.’

’No,’ she said softly. ’They haven’t. And there are lands out there — there have to be, the sea doesn’t just stop — full of people who’ve never heard one word of any of this. Who’ve never heard of the Editor, or the Rememberers, or you. Places the spark has never reached and now never will, because he’s about to seal the one edge of the world we haven’t crossed before we ever cross it.’ She sat down slowly. ’He’s not just cutting valley from valley. He’s about to cut the whole known world off from everything it doesn’t know yet. He’s putting a lid on it. And in fifty years, sealed in a shrinking box, each valley alone, tired—’

’—they set it down on their own,’ I said. ’One at a time. Exactly as he always said.’

’Exactly as he always said.’

I have described Grand Archivist Lu to you as a small, mild, ink-stained man who does his eleven-hour days in a records room. I want to add one thing to the portrait, now, from the vantage of those weeks: he is the best there has ever been at this, and it is not close, and the reason is that he does not need to win in front of anybody. He is content to win in fifty years, quietly, by arithmetic, having never raised his voice. That is a far more frightening kind of enemy than any I fought in the tournament, and I had a whole tournament of them.

So we rode for the coast. Because if the lid was going to come down, I wanted to be under the open sky when it did, and not sealed in the box with everyone else.

We reached Saltreach three days ahead of the Unbinding, and only that far ahead because we killed the horses doing it.

Saltreach is — was — the great port of the western edge, the place where the whole interior finally runs out of land and has to decide what to do about it. A grey stone town stacked up a hillside over a grey working harbour, gulls, tar, salt, rope, the smell of fish being turned into money. Ten thousand people. Forty generations of them had made their living off the water, off the deep trade, off boats going out past the edge of the map and coming back heavier.

And the boats weren’t going out anymore.

I felt it before Yun Shu named it, the way you feel a room where something’s wrong before you know what. The harbour was full — masts like a burned forest, hull to hull — and none of them were moving. Good boats. Deep-water boats, the big ones built to cross the real water and not just hug the coast. Tied up. Rotting, a little, at the waterline, the way a thing rots when it stops being used.

’Ask them why,’ said Yun Shu, in the flat voice she uses when she already knows the answer and needs to hear a stranger say it, because a stranger saying it is evidence and Yun Shu runs on evidence.

So we asked. And the harbourmaster of Saltreach, a broad weathered woman with fifty years of salt in her face, told us cheerfully that the deep trade had ’dried up a while back.’ When Yun Shu asked how long back, she frowned, and thought, and could not say. When Yun Shu asked where the deep boats used to go, she opened her mouth to answer — a woman who had cleared those exact boats for those exact ports for fifty years — and there was nothing there. Not sadness. Not loss. Just a smooth blank where a lifetime of far shores used to be, and a mild puzzlement that anyone would ask.

’They went somewhere,’ she said, and laughed, a little uneasy. ’Course they did. Loaded ’em myself. Just — you know how it is. Long time ago now.’ It was April. She had the ledgers. She could not hold the fact that the ledgers meant a place.

That’s the Unbinding, and I want you to sit in how quiet it is. Nobody in Saltreach had forgotten a soul. Every family whole. Every name in its place. They simply could no longer hold the far shore — the link out across the water had been cut, and so the boats sat, because you cannot sail to a place that isn’t in anybody’s mouth, and nobody was even sad about it, because you can’t miss a road you can’t remember was ever there.

Except.

Yun Shu found it, because Yun Shu finds the residue, it is the thing she is for. Down at the end of the harbour there was a chandler — that’s the shop that sells rope and canvas and sea-tackle — and the old man who kept it made, every single week, a particular kind of long twisted rope-splice that no boat in Saltreach had any use for anymore. Made a dozen of them. Hung them up. Sold none. Couldn’t say why he made them. Got upset when asked. His father had taught him; they were for a kind of rigging used only on the deep boats, on the long crossings, and he’d made a dozen a week for sixty years and his hands would not stop even though the reason was four months gone.

Twelve rope-splices a week. For a sea nobody could remember crossing.

The shape of the missing. The ache with no name. A whole ocean of it, sitting in an old man’s hands.

I stood on the last quay of Saltreach that evening and looked at the water, and I felt the wall of it, and I want to describe the wall to you because it’s the lowest I’d been since the Mourning Downs.

We had an answer to the Unbinding. Walk. Be the thread. A woman with a bag over a hill.

You cannot walk the sea.

That’s the whole thing. There was no hill. There was no road for a woman with a bag. Tao Tao’s beautiful answer, the thing that had lifted us all four nights ago — it ended at the waterline, hard, like a slammed door. Every valley Lu cut on the land, we could send a person to on foot, slow, too slow, but possible. And past this quay there was a thing no person could walk across, and beyond it lands that had never heard of us, being sealed away one link at a time, and not one walker in all the world could carry a single story over that much water on their own two feet.

’He picked the one between we can’t be a bridge for,’ I said.

Beside me, the Scroll dinged, and it was quiet, and it did not have a like button, and I have learned that its silences are where it keeps the things it can’t make into a legend.

DING. NEW LEGEND PUBLISHED. REACH: 0. BELIEF: 0%. Talent. I have carried a name across the dark for a thousand years. I told you that. I was a road when there were no other roads left; I would not close. But I am a road across the sky. I go where names go — up, into the Records, star to star. I cannot go across water. There is nothing for me to walk on out there either. It is the one dark even I have never learned to cross.

And then, after a while:

He has found the between that has no walkers and no roads and no me. I am sorry. I do not have this one.

The sea made no sound that a sea doesn’t make. It just lay there, grey and enormous and old, the widest silence in the world, and somewhere out in the dark of it were shores full of people I would now never get to fail to save.

And the dark spoke to me, gentle, the way it does, coming off the water like a cold I’d forgotten to name.

You keep calling me the dark, it said. I told you. I am the distance. And here I am at my truest — I am the sea. I have kept every far shore apart from every near one since before your first boat. He did not build me here. He only stopped you shouting across me. You were always going to lose the edges, Lin Bo. The edges are mine. They always were.

Sit down, it said, kindly, over the water. You have run out of hill.

And I stood on the last quay of the known world with my number stalled for the twenty-ninth day, and for a while I had nothing at all.
