Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

For a while after Sedgewater, I got to watch something I genuinely thought I’d never see: the world getting better on its own, faster than I could track, and needing me for almost none of it.

The un-erasing spread the way Ji Lan had thrown it—down every thread of the movement at once, a story too true and too urgent to sit still. It turns out that once you show a grieving world one single town walk into the dark and pull a forgotten old man back out by his name, you do not have to explain it twice. Every place the great blanking had touched, if it had even one woven neighbor within reach, began the same slow miracle.

The living who still held the lost stood up in their squares and said the names, and one true thing, and their towns held it with them. Those smooth blank faces flickered and surfaced and came home. Region by region, the sky that had gone half-dark in one terrible night filled itself back in, night after night, star after stubborn star, faster than the Scroll could write them down.

And I did almost nothing. That was the point, and it took me a long time to stop feeling useless about it and start feeling something closer to holy.

Because here’s the thing the bottom taught me, the thing I needed a thousand towns going dark to finally understand: it was never supposed to be me. For a year I’d carried the whole sky on my back, rushing to each fire, certain that if I could just be bright enough, fast enough, and everywhere enough, I could hold the dark off the people I loved. But the dark came for far more than one man could hold.

I’d frozen in a road while the world went out and learned the cost of being the only light the hard way. What saved us in the end was the exact opposite of me. It was a fen-town full of nobodies deciding they would not let each other go. It was the saved doing the saving. It was a cloth, not a candle—Bai Qing’s whole life’s truth, proven at last at the scale of a continent.

So I let the world save itself. I stood back and watched it. Somewhere in there, the family started laughing again.

That’s the part I’ll keep forever, more than the stars.

We were on the road east of Sedgewater one evening, following the good news for once instead of the bad. Tao Tao was doing an impression of the old ferryman from Reedmoor explaining, with enormous dignity, that he was nobody and there was really no reason anyone should remember a man who merely rowed a boat.

She had his gruff embarrassed voice exactly.

Mu Chen laughed so hard he had to sit down in the road, the gentle healer who’d been carrying a whole eastern country’s worth of grief, just sitting in the dirt wheezing. Bai Qing’s stern mouth broke into a real grin, and Ji Lan said something so filthy about the ferryman’s two missing fingers that I refuse to write it down. Yun Shu leaned into my side, laughing her quiet laugh.

I sat there in the middle of all of it, in the warm dark, with the noodle pot at my feet, and thought: there it is. The family found its jokes again.

It had been grieving, at the bottom. It had had no laughter in it. And here it was, coming back, the one cloth in the whole world the dark had never managed to pull a thread from, healing itself the same way everything else was—soul to soul, warmth to warmth, refusing to let each other stay in the dark.

That’s when the Scroll finally decided I’d gotten too comfortable.

DING.

The gold popped up bright, gleeful, and enormous, in a way it hadn’t since before the silence—the Scroll waking all the way back up into its old shameless obsession with engagement, and I felt my stomach drop because I knew that particular shade of gold.

It has never once meant something restful was about to happen.

✦ TIER ASCENSION ✦

Legendary → MYTHIC.

Reach: the entire remembering world, and climbing.

Belief: I have stopped measuring it as a percentage, talent, because it broke my instruments.

The world watched you teach it to reach into the dark and pull its dead back home. It has decided it will not stop telling that story for a thousand years. Do you understand what that makes you?

By popular and unshakable belief, you are now: The One Whose Name Comes Back.He Who Walked Into the Dark and Fetched the Morning.Pronounceable Even by the Silence.

New Legend, effective immediately and believed by every living soul: Lin Bo’s name is now so completely known that it can never be un-said — and if you speak it aloud, anywhere in the world, some part of him hears you.

Was this ascension helpful? 👍 👎

I read it twice. Then I put my head in my hands.

”What,” said Yun Shu, watching my face with deepening enjoyment. ”What did it do?”

”It made me Mythic,” I said, into my palms.

”That’s good, isn’t it? That’s more power. You’ll need it, if Lu—”

”It says,” I told her, ”that everyone in the world now knows my name so well that when anyone, anywhere, says it out loud—I hear it.”

I lowered my hands and looked at the ridiculous glowing notification hanging in the dark. ”Yun Shu. Do you understand how many taverns are, at this exact moment, telling the story of the time I sneezed down a mountain?”

There was a pause while she worked it out.

Then my partner, the great love of my ridiculous life, the woman who has never once told me a comfortable thing that wasn’t true, laughed so hard she nearly fell off the road.

And here’s the thing — she was right to. Because I want to tell you what it’s actually like being Mythic, being the single most powerful being that has ever drawn breath.

I want to tell you honestly, because the whole book has been leading here.

It’s loud. I hear my own name now the way you hear rain on a roof, a soft endless patter from every direction, all the time — Lin Bo, Lin Bo, did you hear about Lin Bo — a whole world telling stories about a man I don’t recognize. And every so often it swells somewhere and tugs at me, and I have to breathe through the pull.

There is no off. The tired ex-clerk who spent his whole sad life aching that nobody remembered his real name is now Mythic because the entire world remembers it so hard it comes when it’s called. I got the exact thing I wanted, in the exact wrong quantity, delivered by the universe with what I can only describe as a sense of humor.

And do you know what it’s worth against the actual war?

Nothing.

That’s the part that finally landed, sitting in that road as the strongest being alive. My power had climbed to the very top of the sky, and it could bend reality politely, and hold a bigger space against the dark than ever, and it was completely, uselessly beside the point. Because the war was never a thing muscle could win.

A thousand towns had come home, and I hadn’t lifted a finger for any of it—the world had done that, the people holding each other doing the one thing no amount of Mythic can do: choosing, freely, to hold each other.

I was the most powerful man who’d ever lived, and I’d never mattered less to the thing that mattered most. Instead of frightening me the way it would have a year ago, it made me feel light as air. The answer was never me. I finally, fully, all-the-way believed it. And a man who no longer needs to be the answer is the freest man in the world, even when he’s Mythic, even when he can’t stop hearing his own name.

The First Author came to us on the road three nights later.

She’d been walking among the people for a long while by then—the apex power who writes the Heavenly Records and erases names, the being who is not allowed to forget the eleven thousand four hundred and six souls she unwrote.

Dressed like a traveler, she went quietly from town to town to watch what the world was learning to do. She sat down at our fire without a word, this woman who carries more grief in her than any soul alive. She looked up at a sky that three weeks ago had been half-emptied and was now nearly whole again. For a long time, she just looked at it.

”For a thousand years,” she said at last, ”I have written this sky, and every name I ever put in it, I eventually watched go out. That is what the sky was to me. A ledger of loss. I would light a soul, and love it, and lose it, and carry it, and never once— not one single time in a thousand years—did I see a name come back.”

Her eyes were very bright in the firelight. ”I erased Su Yue with my own hand because the world was too small and forgetful to hold them, and I was certain, all the way down, that gone was gone. That my curse was the truth of the whole world—that to lose someone is to lose them forever, and the only mercy is to carry it.”

She looked around at us—at the family, at the match and the fact-checker and the gate-keeper and the healer and the founder and the storyteller.

”And I have spent three weeks watching fen-towns full of nobodies prove me wrong. Prove that the sky is not a ledger of loss. That it can take names back from the dark.”

Her voice caught just once. ”I did not know the world could do that. In a thousand years, I never once let myself hope it could. And a tired clerk with a cursed scroll taught it to, in a year.”

Nobody said anything. What do you say?

”When the whole world remembers,” she said quietly, to the fire, to Su Yue, to the ember at the top of the sky she’d been grieving for a thousand years, ”we are going to bring them home too. Aren’t we? Even them. Even the brightest one.”

It wasn’t quite a question. ”I am beginning to believe it. For the first time. I am beginning to believe we might actually—”

She didn’t finish it either.

I’ve noticed that. None of us can finish that sentence yet—not the Scroll, not the First Author, not me. We get right to the edge of we might actually win, and something in us refuses to tempt it into words.

But we’re all thinking it now. That’s new. Three weeks ago, I sat in the dark, certain I’d rung the dinner bell. And now the most sorrowful being in existence was sitting at my fire, looking at a sky filling back in, letting herself hope out loud for the first time in a thousand years.

It was Bai Qing who put it plainest, later, when the others had gone to sleep and it was just the two of us keeping the fire.

The gate-keeper of the overlooked sat quietly through the whole recovery, in the way she goes quiet when a thing is touching the center of her. Because it was her truth the whole world had just proven. Her nameless teacher had been erased for being unknown, and she built her entire life around one stubborn belief: that you beat the silence not by shining brightest but by holding each other so completely there’s nothing left to take. And she’d just watched a continent do exactly that, and pull its dead home besides.

”He’d have come back,” she said into the fire, not looking at me. ”My teacher. In this world. Even if they’d taken him—someone would have remembered him, and held his name, and brought him home.”

Her jaw worked. ”The world I wanted is real now. I got to see it. I didn’t think I’d get to see it.”

”You didn’t just see it,” I said. ”You built it. Every bit of this—the cloth, the way the towns hold, the reaching-back—that’s yours, Bai Qing. That’s the thing you knew in your bones when nobody else did. The whole world is doing what you spent your life trying to teach one order to do.”

She was quiet for a long moment. Then she looked at me—really looked, the unguarded way she’d looked at me once in Reedmoor, the composed, careful woman gone open in a way she clearly hadn’t planned. Something moved behind her steady eyes that I was, God help me, still too slow to read.

”You’re the only one who ever said it was mine,” she said very low. ”Everyone else calls it your movement. The demon-slayer’s gospel.”

A pause. ”You’ve never once done that. Not from the first day. You always give it back to whoever it belongs to.”

She stopped like she’d said more than she meant to, turned firmly back to the fire, and said something about taking the next watch.

That was the end of it.

But I lay down that night and thought about the look on her face. I thought: I feel like I’m supposed to understand something here, and didn’t, and fell asleep to the sound of my own name pattering softly down from a thousand distant taverns.

In the morning, the first report came in that something, somewhere, had gone wrong.

Not the dark. That was what confused Yun Shu, poring over the thread from a river town two days south called Millbrook. Everything that should have worked was there. A woman had been blanked in the night—one of the last stragglers of the great erasure, a soul the reaching-back had not yet gotten to. Her husband was alive, woven, and held her name, and her whole town loved them both. By every rule we had learned, by everything Sedgewater had proven, that town should have stood up in its square and pulled her home in an afternoon.

They hadn’t. She was still blank. Days had passed, and she was still blank.

And the reason wasn’t the dark.

The reason was that her husband—the one man in the world who still held her name, who could have said it aloud and brought her back in an hour—had looked at the town gathered to help him and quietly, gently, with a strange new peace on his face, said no.

Said he didn’t want her back.

Said it was better this way.
