Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

For about two weeks after Threewells, I let myself believe we were winning.

I want to be honest: I knew better.

Xue Ningzhi had told me plainly, by the fire that last night. ’He is out of clever. And a man like Lu, out of clever, gets desperate. He reaches for something big. Something cruel. Something loud.’

I’d heard her. I’d banked the fire higher. Then, I’d ridden out into a healing world. The world had been so beautiful in its healing that I let the warning slide to the back of my mind.

It is what you do with a thing you don’t want to look at.

Because it was beautiful.

Everywhere we went, the wells ran clean.

The third door spread faster than the poison could follow it.

The door-showers had learned to beat the ’they want to keep you hurting’ lie the Threewells way. They met it with a kindness so plainly willing to lose that it left the poison nothing to grip.

Town after town came unfolded.

The Scroll counted new stars every night. Its voice was almost giddy.

Ji Lan was writing the truest story of her life down every thread of the movement. She liked herself more with every town. I caught her humming once. Actually humming.

My glamorous storyteller who had spent thirty years too polished to hum.

I didn’t say anything.

Some things you just get to keep quietly.

Tao Tao was teaching new Rememberers by the dozen. Mu Chen was tired in the good way. Yun Shu leaned into my side at every fire, and we watched a world learn to trust the knock.

And I thought—God help me, I thought—we might actually be winning this.

We were.

That was the trouble.

We were winning the war Lu knew how to fight. And so Lu stopped fighting it. He started fighting a different one.

— • —

The word reached us on the road east. It was carried by a rider whose horse was near dead under him. I knew before he had said three words that the warmth of those two weeks was over. I had never seen a Rememberer’s face look like that.

Not grief.

Grief we knew.

This was something under grief. Something the whole movement had somehow, in all our winning, forgotten was even possible.

’Sedgewater,’ he got out.

’The Empire. An army. Lin Bo—they are not blanking it.’

His voice cracked all the way through.

’They are burning it.’

We rode.

God, we rode.

Sedgewater was the first town that ever came back. It was the fen-town where old Ru the net-mender was pulled out of the dark by his name. It was where Old Wen held a forgotten man’s hands all night and would not let go. It was where the whole long road first turned back up out of the bottom.

It was a symbol.

I understood on that ride that this was exactly why Lu had chosen it. He wasn’t picking a soft target. He was picking the one that meant the most.

He wanted to prove the opposite of our work.

We came over the last rise into a thing my toolkit had no answer for.

I understood everything about erasure. I could un-erase. The whole world could, by now. Reach into the dark, find the residue, hold the name, pull them home.

We had built a movement on the beautiful truth that ’gone’ was not the same as ’gone-for-good’.

I came over that rise. I looked down at Sedgewater.

I saw an army with steel, fire, and torches. I saw soldiers going house to house. I understood, in one cold falling instant, that Lu had found the one weapon our entire beautiful movement had no answer for at all.

He wasn’t erasing anyone.

Erasure we could undo.

He was killing them.

And you cannot un-erase a corpse.

That is the whole horror of it. I need you to feel it the way it fell on me. It is the turn the whole rest of the war hinges on.

Everything we had built—the un-erasing, the reaching-back, the third door—every bit of it worked on the erased. On souls the dark had taken from memory. They could be reached and reconstructed and lit back into the sky, because they weren’t gone. They were only forgotten.

But a man run through with a sword is not forgotten. He is dead.

You can remember a dead man all you like. You can hold his name and love him and carry him forever. But he stays dead. Death is not a thing you reach back from.

It is the one door that only ever swings one way.

Lu had watched us pull a thousand towns out of the dark. He had finally, cruelly, understood the flaw in it. Our whole miracle only worked on the reversible kind of loss.

So he had reached past erasure entirely. He reached for the oldest, crudest, stupidest weapon there is.

He had sent men with steel to make the loss permanent.

’You keep reaching into the dark for everyone I take?’

’Fine. Reach into the grave.’

Then I stopped thinking.

There was an army killing people I had fought to save. For the first time in this whole long war, my Mythic power was exactly the right tool.

I want to tell you what it is, being the most powerful being that has ever lived, unleashed at last on a thing that deserved it.

It is not gentle.

I came down off that rise like something out of the legends the Scroll writes. The erasure-power the Empire’s soldiers carry broke against me like water on a cliff. Their steel meant nothing.

I moved through that army like the sneeze story made flesh. Shielding, scattering, throwing whole companies off the burning streets, standing in doorways no sword could pass.

Where I stood, Sedgewater lived.

I held a line down the middle of that town by main force. Behind it, people ran for the reeds and got out. Dozens of them. Old Wen among them.

For a few blazing minutes, I was everything the world believed I was. I saved everyone I could reach.

But I am one man.

Even Mythic, I am one man.

Here is the lesson the bible of my whole life keeps teaching me. The one I keep having to learn: I can hold one line. I cannot be everywhere.

While I stood in the eastern lanes of Sedgewater being a god, the western lanes burned. I was not in them. I cannot be in two lanes at once, not even the strongest soul alive.

And worse—I felt it even as I fought—my own brightness was drawing them.

The more I blazed in the east, the more the dark and its soldiers understood exactly where I wasn’t. They pressed the west.

You cannot fight a fire by being the brightest thing in the room. You only tell it where the shadows are.

I saved the east.

The west I could not save.

The arithmetic of that broke something in me even as my hands did impossible things.

In the west, they got old Ru.

I didn’t see it happen. Old Wen did. She had made it to the reeds, safe, pulled out by the line I held. She had looked back—the way you do—for the man she had once refused to let the dark keep.

She saw a soldier reach him.

Old Ru. The net-mender who had never been lost on the water in sixty years. The man whom a whole town had pulled out of the silence by his name in the most beautiful morning of the whole war.

A soldier reached him in the burning western lane. It was not erasure. There was no name to hold. There was no reaching back.

We found Old Wen after, in the reeds, holding him.

That was the image that ended the two weeks of believing we were winning. It is the image I will carry to the end of my own days.

Old Wen. The most overlooked soul in the world. The woman who in the best moment of this whole story had held a forgotten man’s hands all night and pulled him home out of the dark.

Holding that same man now, in the mud, dead.

In Sedgewater, in the morning, she had held his hands and said his name. The whole town had reached into the silence and brought him back.

Here she was holding him again. Saying his name again, over and over—Ru, Ru, Ru.

This time the name reached nothing.

He wasn’t in the dark. He was gone.

There is no door in all the world you can pull a person back through from gone.

’Bring him back,’ she said, when she saw me.

Not angry.

Worse than angry. Certain.

The way she had been certain that first night. The stubborn certainty of a woman who had already reached into the dark once and won.

’You did it before. We held his name and we brought him back. So do it again. Bring him back, demon-slayer. Hold his name with me. Please.’

She looked up at me. The strongest being that has ever lived, standing over her useless.

She said, ’Why aren’t you holding his name?’

I had to tell her.

I had to kneel down in the mud beside the woman who had taught the whole world that gone wasn’t gone-for-good. I had to tell her that this time it was.

That her name had nowhere to reach.

The one thing our whole beautiful movement could not undo was this: a sword, and after it, the grave.

Old Ru, whom we had pulled from the dark together, was somewhere no holding could reach. He would not be coming home, not this morning, not ever. Lu had found the one loss that stays lost.

I have done a great many hard things in this war.

Kneeling in the reeds and telling Old Wen there was no reaching him this time was the hardest.

She didn’t scream.

She just went very still, holding him.

After a while she said, in a small voice, ’But we brought him back.’

Like it was a rule. Like the world had made her a promise.

’We brought him back, and it was so hard, and we did it. And now—’

She stopped.

I watched the truth of the new war land on the woman it would land on hardest. The truth that was about to land on the whole remembering world: we had taught them the dark could be undone, and Lu had just shown them a dark that couldn’t.

Behind us, Sedgewater burned, half-saved and half-gone. A dozen more towns were burning that morning across the fens that I would never reach in time. I am one man. The Empire has many soldiers. Steel is cheap. I cannot be everywhere.

The Scroll dinged, once, and then said nothing else for a long time. What it said was small.

-------------------------------

DING.

...I do not have a number for this.

I have a number for erasure. I have watched this world lose names for a thousand years and I have counted every one. Lately I have counted them coming back, and it has been the joy of my whole long life.

This is not erasure, talent. This is the other thing. The old thing. The thing my Records were never built to measure, because it happens in the body and not in the sky. I cannot reach it, and neither can you.

He found the one loss we cannot undo. I do not know how to help you carry this. I only know that we must.

----------------------------

I knelt in the reeds with Old Wen and a dead man we had once saved, in the smoke of the first town that ever came back. I understood that the clever part of the war was over. We had won every subtle round so completely that Lu had thrown the whole board on the floor and reached for the sword.

The sword was going to be so much worse.

Everything we knew how to do, we could not do to a grave.

The war of memory had just become a war of blood.

Blood, unlike everything else in this whole strange world, does not come back.
