Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

We went to Sedgewater.

I made the choice, and I’ll carry that choice forever.

I want to tell you exactly why I made it.

Because the dark had built this whole night to force it upon me.

I went to Sedgewater because it was close.

Because the cloth there was half-woven and might still be saved.

And because—God help me—Old Wen was there.

The people of Reedmoor were there.

I could not bear to let the dark take the very people who had just learned to hold on.

I chose the place I loved.

Which meant I chose to let a thousand places I’d never met go dark without me.

That is what triage is.

That is what being one light in a thousand fires actually means when it stops being a thing Xue Ningzhi warns you about and becomes a thing your own legs are doing, running toward one town while the whole rest of the world screams.

We rode like the dark itself was behind us.

We got to Sedgewater too late.

And not too late.

Both at once.

In the cruellest possible measure.

The woven held.

That was the thing I clung to, standing in that half-blanked town as the silence receded.

The thing that kept me from going to pieces entirely.

Where the cloth had finished, it held.

The reed-folk Reedmoor had already woven in.

The families who had learned each other’s names.

The half of Sedgewater the weavers had reached.

The dark closed its hand around them and found knots it could not pull.

They stood there blinking, shaken, alive, held by each other against a silence that had unmade the world on every side.

The answer worked.

Even here.

Even tonight.

The cloth is real, and it beats the dark.

I need you to know that it held.

Because of what I have to tell you next.

The other half of Sedgewater was gone.

Not dead.

Worse.

In the particular way this war has always been worse than death.

Blank.

Hollow.

The unwoven half of the town—

The people the weavers hadn’t reached yet.

The ones still loose.

Still un-held.

Still two days away from being knotted safely in—

Stood in the moonlight with smooth empty faces.

Not knowing their own names.

Not knowing their neighbors.

Not knowing the half of the town that stood across the square, remembering them and unable to give it back.

Strangers where, that very morning, there had been people learning to love each other.

A whole town cut down the middle by the difference between woven and not.

Between reached-in-time and not.

Between a name someone had learned to hold and a name no one had gotten to yet.

And in the middle of it stood Old Wen.

Untouched.

Because being woven isn’t about where your feet are — it’s about being held in memory.

Reedmoor held her now, all of them.

From a day’s walk away.

So the silence rolled right over her and found nothing to take.

The most overlooked woman in the world stood unharmed in the center of a blanked town.

The one soul the dark couldn’t reach in a square full of the people it had reached.

She was holding the hands of the half-blind old man she’d been weaving in just hours before.

The one she’d sat beside and asked to tell her one true thing.

He was looking at her with a smooth, empty face and no idea who she was.

Because she’d learned his name but hadn’t had time.

She hadn’t finished.

The town hadn’t taken him up yet.

One woman holding one name is not a cloth.

One thread cannot hold a person.

It takes the whole town.

And the whole town hadn’t gotten there in time.

She looked up at me when we came.

Old Wen, this woman who had been invisible for forty years and seen for three weeks, said, in a voice with nothing left in it, ”I learned his name. I did. I learned it this morning. I just—I couldn’t hold him by myself.”

And she kept holding the hands of a man who no longer knew her.

Even now.

Even when there was nothing left in him to hold onto.

I did not save Sedgewater.

I saved half of it.

The half that had already saved itself.

I watched the other half stand blank in the moonlight.

Somewhere to the east and the south and the north, a thousand other towns I never reached had gone exactly the same way.

Or worse.

With no Reedmoor nearby to have woven even half.

Whole towns.

Whole valleys.

Whole coasts.

Blanked entire in one night while I rode toward the one place I loved.

The Scroll did not ding.

I kept waiting for it.

The gold.

The count.

The not again.

And this time, I kept it.

It had vowed.

It had kept its vow for Mu Chen.

And it said nothing at all.

All that long night.

Because there is no engagement number for a thousand towns going dark at once.

No ”Was this helpful?”

No thumbs up or thumbs down.

No way to publish a silence.

The Scroll that had narrated my entire ridiculous life simply had nothing to say.

For the first time since I’d found it.

And its quiet was the loudest and most terrible thing in the world.

Far to the north, Grand Archivist Lu received the reports of what he had done.

And he did not gloat.

That was the worst part.

Because Lu has always believed, all the way down, that he was being kind.

That remembering is a wound and forgetting is mercy.

That what he’d done that night was not a massacre but an anesthetic.

A thousand towns full of people who would never again lie awake with a grief too heavy to carry.

Because he had lifted the whole weight of being a person off of them in a single merciful breath.

He had won the largest blow of the entire war.

And in his own cold and certain heart, he had done it out of love.

There is nothing more frightening than that, and I have stopped pretending otherwise.

We sat in the dark that night, my family and I, in a half-empty town.

With the woven half of Sedgewater grieving across the square for the blanked half they could remember and not reach.

Nobody knew what to say.

So for a long time, nobody said anything.

And then I said the thing out loud that had been eating me since the silence fell.

The thing I think had been waiting under this whole war for me to finally have to look at.

”They were safe,” I said.

”Before.

All those people.

They were so forgotten the dark didn’t even bother with them.

Beneath its notice.

Beneath the leaderboard.

Beneath everything.

Nobody.

Safe in being nobody.”

My voice didn’t sound like mine.

”And then I came along and taught the whole world that remembering matters again.

I made it worth something.

And the second I did that, every forgotten nobody in the world stopped being beneath the dark’s notice and started being a target.

I lit the world up just enough to wake the thing that eats it.”

I looked at them.

My found family.

The only faces I had left that the dark couldn’t touch.

”What if a half-lit world is more dangerous than a dark one?

What if I did this to them?

What if all of it—Reedmoor, the cloth, the stars, every beautiful thing—

What if all I really did was ring the dinner bell?”

Nobody answered me.

That’s the part I need you to sit with.

Because I had to.

Yun Shu took my hand in the dark.

She did the thing she has always done—the thing I love her for and that nearly killed me that night.

She didn’t lie to me.

She didn’t say, ”No, of course not, it’s not your fault.”

She held on, and she was quiet.

Because she’s never once told me a comfortable thing that wasn’t true.

She could not, in that moment, honestly tell me I was wrong.

Bai Qing sat with her faith in her own life’s work shaken for the first time since I’d met her.

Mu Chen carried one more hole—the whole eastern country he couldn’t reach—on top of the one already inside him.

Tao Tao, my fierce bubbly junior who believed in everything, sat staring at nothing.

Her fire gutted down to almost nothing at all.

We were not destroyed.

I want to be clear about that because it matters for whatever comes next.

The family held.

We were all still there.

All still ours.

The one cloth in the whole world the dark had never once managed to pull a thread from.

The warmth was still there, under everything.

But it was grieving that night.

It had no jokes in it.

For the first time since a tired ex-clerk picked up a cursed scroll and started accidentally saving the world, I did not know if we were doing the right thing.

Or if I should have left the whole world asleep and forgotten and safe.

I sat in the dark with the noodle pot cold beside me.

A thousand blanked towns at my back.

A question I could not answer in my chest.

I looked up at a sky that, two weeks ago, had been filling with stars—and was now, across half the world, gone dark again.

This was the bottom.

I know that now.

That night in Sedgewater was the lowest the whole long road ever took us.

But I didn’t know it yet.

That night, I only knew the dark.

The silence where the Scroll’s voice should have been.

The unanswerable question.

The cold pot.

And the held hands of an invisible woman who wouldn’t let go of a man who’d forgotten her.

That night, I thought we had lost.
