Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Here is the thing about a half-blanked town.

The thing Lu hadn’t counted on.

The thing I don’t think the dark is even capable of understanding.

Because it has never, in all its long existence, had to hold a single thought in mind.

The half of Sedgewater that the cloth had saved remembered the half that it hadn’t.

That’s what stopped them grieving.

Once they watched Old Ru come home — once they saw, with their own streaming eyes, that the dark wasn’t just a door that swung one way — every soul in that woven half stopped staring helplessly across the square at the blank faces of their neighbors.

They started doing math of a different kind.

I know him.

That’s Hai, the cooper. He stood up at my brother’s wedding.

That’s the widow Song. She sold me eggs every market day for nine years.

I know where she lives.

I know she lost a son to the fever.

I know she sings to herself when she thinks no one’s near.

The blanked half of the town wasn’t a square full of strangers to the woven half.

It was a square full of people they remembered.

People whose names, stories, bad jokes, and small sorrows were still warm and whole in the heads of the neighbors who’d been learning them just the morning before.

The residue wasn’t lost.

It was next door.

I stood up out of the mud and watched it happen — watched the most overlooked town on the fen turn, all at once, from a place mourning its dead into a place that realized its dead were not, in fact, beyond reach.

Yun Shu stepped into the middle of it, my deadpan soul-reader.

The master of pulling people back out of the gaps they leave.

And she did the thing that I think will turn out to be the most important thing any of us did in the whole war.

She didn’t try to bring them all back herself.

She taught the town how to do it.

She stood in the square and showed them — plain and clear, the way Mu Chen had taught a whole world to carry grief without drowning in it — exactly what Wen had done by accident.

Find the one among you who still holds them.

Say their name out loud, and one true thing.

And everyone who remembers, hold it with them — loud and sure — until the truth has nowhere to go but home.

You don’t need me.

You don’t need him.

She pointed at me, the strongest man alive, standing uselessly off to the side.

And I had never been so glad to be pointed at as the thing that wasn’t needed.

You need each other.

You always did.

Go get your neighbors.

And Sedgewater went and got its neighbors.

It took the whole day.

It was not clean.

It broke my heart a hundred separate times in a hundred ways.

Some of the blanked came back at the first calling of their names and wept like Ru had wept.

Some took the whole town an hour; the truth of them poured in by every neighbor at once before they flickered and surfaced and remembered.

And some — I have to tell you this, because I’ve never lied to you, and I’m not going to start — some did not come back.

The people who’d remembered them best had been on the unwoven side too, and they were blanked themselves.

There was simply no one left holding the thread.

Those we could not get.

Those are gone.

A woken world reaches back into the dark for its lost.

And it is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

But it can only reach as far as someone still remembers.

Where the remembering itself was taken, the dark keeps what it took.

But oh, the ones we could.

By dusk, the square that had been cut down the middle in the night — woven on one side, blank on the other — was almost whole again.

Old Ru sat at the center mending a net by feel, found and unlost.

While all around him, a town pulled its forgotten home one name at a time.

New stars came up over Sedgewater faster than I could count, low and bright and impatient.

A sky that had been half-emptied in a single night filled itself back in over a single day.

By the simple, stubborn, world-saving act of neighbors refusing to let each other stay lost.

And the word went out from there like the cloth itself had gone out — soul to soul, no center, no bottleneck, faster than any of us could have carried it.

That was Ji Lan’s hour.

And I want to give it to her, because she’d been so quiet through the bottom of the night that it had frightened me.

Now I understood why.

Ji Lan, the glamorous A-lister who’d spent thirty years building her own legend, feared being forgotten more than anyone alive.

Precisely because she knew exactly what fame was worth and how fast it goes out.

Ji Lan was the one who took what Sedgewater had just proved and threw it down every thread of the movement.

Her storyteller’s voice was no longer ragged but blazing.

The message wasn’t complicated.

The blanked aren’t gone.

If you remember them, you can bring them back.

Go to the towns the dark took in the night.

Go to the ones near you, the ones you know.

And where you find the forgotten, hold their names and pull them home.

The dark spent everything it had, and it could not keep what we still remember.

She made it spread the way only she can make a thing spread — not as an order, never an order, but as a story so true and so urgent that a whole woken world heard it and went.

And the world, it turned out, had been listening.

Because the world wasn’t asleep anymore.

That was the thing I finally understood, standing in Sedgewater at dusk while the stars came back.

For a year I’d been teaching the world to remember.

I’d thought of it as kindling — a hundred thousand small flames I was lighting one at a time, with the dark always one breath behind me, snuffing what I’d lit.

I’d lain awake the night before, convinced I’d done something monstrous — that I’d taken a world full of forgotten nobodies who were safe in being beneath the dark’s notice and lit them up just bright enough to wake the thing that eats them, ringing the dinner bell.

What if a half-lit world is more dangerous than a dark one? I’d asked my family.

Not one of them had been able to honestly tell me I was wrong.

Here is the answer.

I had to watch a thousand towns go dark and then see a woken world go get them back before I could get it, but here is the answer — and it’s the truest thing in this whole book.

A dark world stays dark.

A world that has truly forgotten how to remember loses a town in the night and never even notices it’s gone.

No gap, no grief, no one to come looking.

The river closes smooth over the dropped stone.

That world is safe the way a corpse is safe.

Nothing can hurt it because there’s nothing left in it to hurt.

But a woken world — a half-lit world, a world I’d taught to remember — a woken world loses a town in the night and will not stand for it.

It feels the gap.

It grieves the absence.

Then it rolls up its sleeves and walks into the dark, pulling its lost back out by their names.

Because it has remembered the one thing the dark cannot survive: that no one is beneath holding.

Gone is not the same as gone-for-good.

And we do not, we do not, leave each other in the silence.

I didn’t ring the dinner bell.

I taught a sleeping world to wake up.

And a woken world is the only kind that ever comes back for its own.

The dark made the people I love into targets.

That part was true; I’ll carry it.

But it also made them into rememberers — a whole world of them, distributed soul to soul across every land.

Each one holds pieces of every neighbor.

So there is no longer any such thing as a soul the dark can take cleanly.

Because somewhere nearby, someone still remembers.

And a woken world does not let go.

It was Xue Ningzhi who put the last cold piece in place, late that night.

She did it with the flat precision of the woman who used to do this same arithmetic for the other side.

”He emptied his hand,” she said.

We were sitting in the lit-again square, the family, the warmth come back into it by degrees through the long miraculous day.

”Lu. He hit every unwoven settlement on the continent at once because he understood he was in a race he was losing.

He spent the Editor’s whole strength to do it — everything, all of it, in one night, because he could not afford to let the cloth finish weaving.”

Her dark eyes were very level.

”He shot his entire arrow, Lin Bo.

The largest blow the dark has ever struck, or will ever be able to strike again for a long, long time — because there’s nothing left in the quiver.

And what did it buy him?”

The faintest, coldest edge of something that might have been satisfaction.

”He blanked a thousand towns.

And then he handed a watching world the single most undeniable proof anyone could ever ask for.

That even a blanking on that scale can be undone, by ordinary people, with nothing but each other.

He didn’t break the movement.

He spent the dark’s whole strength to give the movement its largest miracle.”

She let that sit.

”The dark’s hand is empty now.

And ours is full.”

Far to the north, Grand Archivist Lu received the reports.

I wasn’t there.

I’m telling you what Xue Ningzhi pieced together later, knowing him the way only his dark mirror can.

He’d gone to sleep the night before, having struck the most decisive blow of the entire war — a thousand towns anesthetized in a single merciful breath.

A thousand towns full of people who would never again lie awake under a grief too heavy to carry.

He had done, in his own cold and certain heart, the kindest thing he knew how to do.

And he woke to the news that the towns were coming back.

That the woven were walking into the blank and pulling the forgotten home by their names.

That his masterstroke — the thing he’d spent the dark’s whole strength on — had become, within a single day, the most-witnessed resurrection in the history of the world.

Watched, wept over, and retold down every thread of the movement he’d spent a year trying to silence.

And the thing that I’m told finally cracked him — the thing his whole certainty had no answer for — was this.

Lu’s faith, the very center of it, the belief he’d built a crusade on, was a single belief:

When you offer broken people a choice between carrying their pain forever and setting it down, they never choose the weight.

Let us count how many were brave, and how many merely tired.

That was his thesis.

That was the whole engine of his cruelty.

And he believed it all the way down, the way only a man who’d hardened instead of breaking can believe a thing.

And here were a thousand towns’ worth of broken, exhausted, grieving people — the exact people he’d been so sure would choose the easy peace every time — and they had looked at the choice he laid before them.

The blank rest of their forgotten neighbors laid gently down where the dark had left them.

They said no.

They had chosen, freely and awake to the last soul, to walk into the dark and carry their lost back out on their own shoulders.

To take up the weight.

Every single one of them.

Not because anyone made them.

Because a woken world wants to.

He had spent his whole life waiting to count how many were brave and how many merely tired.

And a thousand towns had just answered him, all at once, in a single day.

The answer was not the one his faith could survive.

I’m told he did not break the way Xue Ningzhi had broken — did not sit down in the wreck of his certainty and weep.

Lu is the one who hardened.

So I’m told that he went very quiet, and very still.

Then he began — colder and more careful and more dangerous than before — to think.

Because a true believer whose central faith has just been disproven in front of the entire world does not stop believing.

He goes looking for a harder way to be right.

And I knew, even from a fen-town a continent away, that whatever Lu thought of next would be worse than anything he’d done.

Precisely because he was no longer certain.

A frightened true believer is the most dangerous thing there is.

But that was tomorrow’s problem.

That night belonged to Sedgewater.

We sat in the square under a sky that had been half-dark at dawn and was nearly whole again by dark.

The warmth was back in the family — not loud yet, not joking yet, but there.

The one cloth in all the world the dark had never managed to pull a single thread from.

Grieving still for the ones we couldn’t reach, and lit up, all the same, by the ones we could.

Tao Tao’s fire had come back into her face by inches all day.

Somewhere in the small hours, she leaned her head on my shoulder and said, in something almost like her old bubbly voice, that she’d believed in a lot of impossible things since she’d met me.

But she had never in her life expected to watch a whole town walk into the dark and come back out carrying people.

And that it was, on balance, even better than the time I accidentally sneezed down a mountain.

Which made me laugh — for the first time in two days.

A cracked, ugly, grateful laugh.

Across the square, Bai Qing’s mouth turned up at the corner.

Ji Lan said something dry and unrepeatable about my sneeze that I won’t put on the page.

Mu Chen smiled his gentle exhausted smile — and the family was slowly, by the warm light of a sky filling back in, becoming itself again.

The Scroll spoke once more before I slept.

It came up soft, and it finally — finally — finished the thought it had been too afraid to finish twice now, under skies full of stars.

DING.

A region, coming home.

Towns I cannot count, reaching into the dark for the towns beside them.

New stars, faster than I can write them down — and I have stopped trying.

Talent, I’m only watching now.

Two weeks ago, I started to say a thing, and I didn’t dare.

I started it again the night the dark took the world, and I had nothing to say at all.

Because there is no number for a thousand towns going out.

Let me say it now.

Let me finally say the whole thing, out loud, where you can hear it.

I think we are going to win.

I think the world has learned the one thing I could never teach it alone — that it does not have to let go.

I think it is going to keep them — all of them, in the end.

I think it is going to reach into the dark and keep getting them back until there is nothing left in the silence to take.

I lost Su Yue because the world was too small to hold one bright soul.

But the world isn’t small anymore.

Look how big it’s gotten.

Look how it learned to hold on.

Come back when the whole world remembers.

That’s what they told you, at the top of the sky.

I think — for the first time in a thousand years — I think the whole world is learning how.

I lay down that night with the noodle pot warm beside me again, in a town that had pulled most of itself back out of the dark — under a sky filling with stubborn impatient stars.

And I did not feel like we’d won, because we hadn’t.

There were still a thousand harder roads ahead.

And a frightened cold man in the north was already thinking of something worse.

And a whole region of grief over the ones we’d been too slow to reach.

But I knew, the way the future me writing this down has known all along, that the bottom was behind us now.

Two nights ago, I’d thought we had lost.

I’d sat in the dark with a cold pot and an unanswerable question.

A silence where the Scroll’s voice should have been, and I had genuinely believed I’d done the world a terrible kindness by teaching it to wake up.

And then the world had woken up — really, finally, all the way up — and shown me what a woken world does.

It doesn’t stay safe in the dark.

It walks in after its lost, and it carries them home.

And it does not let go.

That’s the answer to the question I couldn’t answer.

That’s the whole answer.

We’d been at the bottom.

And the bottom, it turned out, was the exact place from which a sleeping world finally learned to stand all the way up — and reach back into the dark, refusing forever to leave anyone behind.
