Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

For most of that night, nothing moved.

I sat with the cold pot and the unanswerable question. My family was silent in the half-blank town. I waited for morning the way you wait for something you already know is coming. Because I did know. I’d been a clerk. I knew how systems behave under stress. I had watched the Forgetters all year — watched the grieving and the tired say yes to the easy mercy, one door at a time. I was certain, in that cold, arithmetic place where Xue Ningzhi lives, exactly what a thousand blanked towns would do to a watching world.

It would teach them the price.

That was the whole genius of what Lu had done, and the whole cruelty of it. He hadn’t just blanked those towns. He’d put the bill where everyone could see it. He’d shown the entire half-lit world, in one night, in letters too big to ignore, what it costs to be remembered in a world where the dark has woken up. Then he sat back, up north in his certainty, and waited for the sensible thing to happen. For people to look at Sedgewater, cut in half, and do the math any frightened animal does. If being woven is what the dark comes for, then stop being woven. Put it down. Forget on purpose, before the silence finds you too. He had spent the Editor’s whole strength in a single night to write that lesson across the sky. Now, he let grief and good sense finish the war for him.

I want to be fair to the plan. It was a good plan. If I were sitting where he was, I might have believed it too.

He was wrong about the morning.

The dawn came up grey and ordinary over Sedgewater, the way dawns have the nerve to do over the worst places. I watched the woven half of the town come out of their houses. I braced for it. I thought I was watching people gather their things to run — to put the river between themselves and whatever had reached into the dark and taken half their neighbors. They’d find somewhere small and quiet and unwoven where silence wouldn’t bother them ever again.

They didn’t run.

They walked toward the square. Toward the blanked half. Toward the smooth, empty strangers who just the day before had been the people they were learning to love. I didn’t understand it at first. I’d been so sure of how this would go that I genuinely couldn’t process what I was seeing — a whole town of frightened people walking toward the thing that should’ve sent them fleeing, gathering in the square around the hollow ones, not away from them.

It was Tao Tao who moved first.

She’d been gutted all night, my fierce, bubbly junior, her fire down to almost nothing. She sat, staring at the dark like it had taken something from her. But then she saw the town gathering and something sparked back in her face — not happiness, nothing so simple, but recognition, like she remembered who she was supposed to be. This was the thing about Tao Tao that I kept underestimating: she founded the Rememberers on one naïve belief, the belief that the dead can be brought home. She cannot — she physically cannot — sit in silence in a room where someone might be brought home. It’s the whole of her. The part the dark couldn’t gut even on the worst night of the war.

She got up and crossed the square to where Old Wen was still sitting — Old Wen, who hadn’t moved all night, still holding the hands of the half-blind old man with the smooth empty face. The one she’d learned the name of that morning and hadn’t had time to finish weaving in. The one she’d told me, her voice drained, that she couldn’t hold by herself.

Tao Tao knelt down in front of him. She looked at his blank, polite, empty face and said his name. Out loud. Clear.

Then she stood up and turned to the woven half of the town, all gathered there, grieving and afraid, not knowing what they were allowed to do. And she said it again, louder, to all of them: ”You know him. You all know him. You’ve known him your whole lives. Say his name.”

And the thing I have to make you understand — the thing it took me, the supposed expert, until that exact moment to understand — is that the residue was right there in front of us the whole time.

Yun Shu got it half a breath before I did; I felt her go rigid beside me. Un-erasing has always worked the same way: you find the residue the erased soul left behind. You reconstruct the truth of who they were and make people genuinely remember it, loud enough and real enough that the name lights back into the sky. We had done it for Xiao Yu by digging the truth out of a town that had only an ache left, a grief with no name attached. We’d done it slow, over weeks, because the residue was buried and scattered. We had to excavate a whole erased life from almost nothing.

But the blanked half of Sedgewater wasn’t erased like that. It had been blanked last night. The woven half of the town had watched it happen. They still remembered every single neighbor — remembered their names, their faces, their bad jokes and how they took their tea. They were standing right there across the square, holding all of it and unable to give it back. The reconstruction wasn’t something we had to do over weeks. It was already done. It was sitting finished and whole in the hearts of every woven soul in that square. All it needed was to be said out loud, together, loud enough to light.

One thread can’t hold a person. That was true. We’d learned it the cruelest way the night before, watching Old Wen hold one man with one thread and lose him anyway. One thread can’t hold a person.

But a whole town can.

The first name into the square was low and uneven — a dozen frightened voices saying one hollow woman’s name, not in unison, ragged, half of them crying. Mei. Mei. That’s Mei. You sold cloth at the south gate, you have a daughter, her name is— and her daughter was there, screaming it now, Mama, you’re my mama, your name is Mei— and for a long, terrible moment, nothing happened. The woman just stood there, her smooth empty face being shouted at by strangers. I thought, no, this is too much to ask — you can’t reach into the silence with bare voices—

And then her face flickered.

I have no better word. Something moved under the blankness like a candle behind a curtain, there and gone. The voices caught it and surged — the whole woven half of the town pouring the truth of the woman back into her at once. Her name, her daughter, her south-gate stall, every true thing they held — and the flicker steadied, caught, held. Mei the cloth-seller put her hand to her own mouth, made a sound like she’d surfaced from deep water, looked at her daughter, and knew her.

The square came apart. Not into chaos — into work. Every woven soul there understood, all at once, the same way you understand a thing in your hands before your head catches up, that they were not victims standing in the ruins of their town. They were the loom. They were a town full of people who remembered, surrounding a town full of people who’d been blanked. Remembering out loud was the whole entire engine. They scattered to it. Each hollow stranger got a knot of neighbors around them, all of them saying who you are, who you are, you are not gone, we have you, here is your name — and one by one, slow and uneven and impossibly, the smooth faces flickered and caught.

And in the middle of it, Old Wen had not let go of the half-blind old man’s hands.

Tao Tao went back to her. Started his name again. This time the woven folk nearest came and joined her — they knew him, of course they knew him, the half-blind man who’d lived at the edge of Sedgewater, the man everyone walked past, the one Old Wen had found because she of all people knew where to look. A dozen voices, then more, all saying who he was around the one thread Old Wen had refused to release.

Here is the part I will carry to the good end of my life, the part that pays back the worst moment of the night before. One thread cannot hold a person — but it can keep the place. Old Wen couldn’t hold that man alone. But because she never once let go, when the town finally came, they had somewhere to start. Her single stubborn thread was the warp they wove the whole cloth onto. The most overlooked woman in the world held one hollow man through the longest dark of the war, not because it could work, but because she could not bear to let the world stop seeing someone — and that refusal, that seemingly useless refusal, was the seed the rescue grew from.

His face caught. He blinked, looked down at the hands holding his. The first thing the re-woven man said — before his own name, before anything — was, ”You’re the reed-cutter. You held my hands. You stayed.”

And Old Wen, who had been invisible for forty years, seen for three weeks, and was now the anchor a man had been pulled out of the silence on, finally let go of his hands so she could put hers over her own face. I had to turn away again, because I’d run out of whatever it is that keeps your face together.

DING.

It was the first sound the Scroll had made since the silence fell. I’d stopped expecting it. I’d half-decided it would never speak again, that a thousand towns going dark had broken something in it that didn’t mend. And then the gold came up in the grey morning, soft, the way it does. I read it standing in a square full of people pulling each other back out of the dark with their bare voices.

A name, returned to the sky. Mei of the south gate. Reach: one town, holding one woman, holding on.

TALENT. Forgive me. I had nothing to say all night, because there is no number for what was taken, and I would not insult it with one.

But I can count this. I have always been able to count this. One soul, lit back. And then another. And another.

A thousand years ago, I lost the one I loved because the world was too small and too forgetful to hold them. There was nothing — nothing — anyone could do but grieve.

Look at this square, talent. Look what they are doing with their voices.

Not again. And this time — this time we do not just keep the ones we have.

This time we go back into the dark, and we bring them home.

I stood in the middle of Sedgewater and watched the second half of a murdered town come back to life one flickering face at a time, and I felt the question I’d carried all night — the cold, reasonable, dinner-bell question — begin, for the first time, to crack.

Because Lu had spent everything to show the world the price.

And he had also, without meaning to, shown it the proof.
