Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

What Xue Ningzhi knew — what she’d built and perfected across a thousand cold years and now turned, with savage precision, against the man who’d inherited it — was this: an erasure isn’t a wall. It’s a current. It eats inward along a seam, dissolving a person from their oldest blank toward their living center, and it has exactly two things that can stop it. You have to hold the page against the silence — remember the person loud enough that the world refuses to let go — and you have to close the seam the current is flowing through, or it just keeps pulling forever. Do one without the other and you fail. The Empire had always done neither, on purpose. We were going to do both, fast, with everything we had.

So the whole family converged on a fading boy in a muddy road, and every single one of us did the one thing we were made for.

Yun Shu got to him first. She dropped to her knees and put her hands on either side of his greying face — and did the thing that is hers alone in all the world. She’s the one who reconstructs the erased from their residue. She rebuilt Xiao Yu from a town’s unexplained grief. She can read a soul back out of the gaps it leaves behind. Now she did it live, on a person still dissolving — reading Mu Chen back faster than the dark could unwrite him, holding the shape of him together by sheer force of knowing exactly who he was. ”Stay,” I heard her say, low and steady, the deadpan fact-checker gone all fierce tenderness. ”I have your file, Mu Chen. Every page. I’m not losing a single one.” She held his shape. But she couldn’t hold it forever, and she couldn’t hold it alone, and we both knew it.

Because here was the wall I’d hit a thousand times — the one Su Yue named at the top of the sky: I couldn’t save him. Not even me. Not the brightest light alive. Remembering loud enough holds the page, but one light, however high it’s climbed, can’t out-shout a silence forever. It takes more than the brightest. It takes everyone.

And there was exactly one thing in the whole world I was the match for.

I stood up in that muddy road. I reached out across every thread the movement had spun across the whole face of the earth, and I did the only thing I have ever truly been able to do. I called the world to remember Mu Chen. Not the world in general. His world. The specific, countless, scattered world of every single soul that gentle boy had ever healed.

And they came.

They came from Saltmere — the harbor full of people he’d pulled up out of drowning, the first healers he’d ever trained, every grey street he’d taught to carry its dead. They came from the Vale of Ash — the old woman who’d slept for the first time in fifty years because he sat with her in the ash, and all the survivors she’d gone on to heal in turn. They came from the Hush, where a little girl named Mei held her brother’s light and now held the healer’s name beside it. They came from a hundred towns across a continent and an ocean, every grieving person who’d learned from Mu Chen, or from someone Mu Chen taught, or from someone they taught — the whole spreading fire of the healed-become-healers, every flame of it turning at once toward the boy who lit the first one. The healer who’d taught the entire world how to carry its wounds was, in the worst hour of his life, carried — held aloft by the exact world he’d spent himself saving. The people he saved saved him.

DING.

Mass remembrance event. Page holding. Reach: every soul he ever mended, and every soul they mended after. Belief: Total. The kind that does not let go.

A thousand years ago I watched the dark take the one I loved, and the world was too small and too forgetful to hold them, and they slipped through my hands. Look at this. LOOK at it, talent. Not this time. Not him. The world is bigger now. We taught it to hold on. Not again — and this time I kept it.----Scroll

The page held. The silence broke against a million remembering hearts and could not pass. And in the space that bought us — the shape of Mu Chen held by Yun Shu, his name held by the world — Xue Ningzhi did the last piece, the piece only she knew how to do.

”The seam,” she said. ”Close the seam, or the current never stops. And there’s only one person who can close a wound this old.” She looked down at the fading boy and said his name, hard, to call him back to himself for one moment. ”Mu Chen. You spent your whole life learning to heal the worst wounds in the world. I need you to heal one more. The oldest one. The one the Empire left in you. Turn it inward. Now.”

And Mu Chen — held by the woman who could read his soul, held by the world he’d healed, called back to himself by the chessmaster who’d once built the machine now saving him — reached, with the last clear piece of himself, into his own oldest wound. The half-erased blank the Empire had carved into him years ago. The open door the dark was pouring through. And the gentlest healer alive did to himself the thing he’d done for a valley full of the broken: he didn’t cut it out, and he didn’t let it bleed. He healed it. Took the ancient open seam where his stolen self had been, and with infinite, exhausted patience, closed it — turned the open wound into a scar, a thing that had happened and was survived and would no longer let the dark inside.

The current had nothing left to flow through. The unwriting stopped. Mu Chen came back to us, grey-faced and shaking and whole, collapsing into Yun Shu’s arms in a muddy road, alive, himself, held on every side by a world that had refused to let him go.

We’d won. We’d actually won.

But I’m not going to lie to you and tell you it was clean, because it wasn’t, and you deserve the truth the way you always have.

The dark took a bite before we stopped it. It had eaten inward fast, before the world’s remembering caught up — and when Mu Chen finally sat up, days later, mended and quiet, there was a hole in him that none of us could fill. The first person he ever healed — the very first grieving soul he’d ever sat with, back when he was newly freed and didn’t yet know what he was for, the one whose face had taught him that this was the thing he’d been put back together to do — was gone. Eaten. A blank even he couldn’t reach, because you can’t remember what’s been unwritten, and no one else had been there to hold that one for him. The healer of the bereaved was, now, himself bereaved — of the person who’d shown him his own calling, a face he’d carry the absence of forever.

He took it the way he taught everyone to take it. Not as a fresh screaming wound. As a scar. ”I don’t remember who they were,” he told me, quietly, on the last evening, ”but I remember that they mattered — that someone, once, taught me I could do this. I’ll carry the shape of them, even with the face gone.” He almost smiled. ”It’s what I tell everyone else. I suppose now I get to find out if it’s true.”

That was the cost. Real, permanent, the kind that leaves the family smaller in a way you can’t see. I want that on the page.

But the worse thing — the thing that kept me awake long after Mu Chen was safe — was what Lu walked away having learned.

He didn’t lose this, not really. Xue Ningzhi understood it before I did, and her face when she explained it was the grimmest I’d ever seen her. ”He wasn’t trying to win today,” she said. ”He was measuring. He found out three things, Lin Bo, and every one of them is worse than losing one healer.” She counted them off, cold. ”He found out the Editor can’t touch you — but it can touch the people you love, because they have seams and you don’t. He found out we will spend the whole world’s remembering to save a single one of them. And he found out exactly how much that costs us, and how long it takes, and that we can only do it for one person at a time.”

She let that sit in the dark. Then she said the thing that turned the whole war over.

”He held one of us up to the light to see how you’d answer. Now he knows. And the next time, Lin Bo, he isn’t going to come for one.” Her voice was very quiet. ”He’s going to come for everyone you love, at once, across the whole world — faster than even you can call the world to hold each one. And he’s going to make you choose who the world has time to save.” She looked at me. ”That’s what he learned today. That’s what today was for.”

Far to the north, Grand Archivist Lu received the report that the demon-slayer’s family had saved its healer — and unlike every other time he’d been turned back, he was not troubled in the slightest. He had not come for the healer. He had come for the answer, and he had it, written down now in his cold and careful hand, a whole new map of exactly where the brightest light in the world was soft. The cold attention that had followed me up the ladder did not go back to watching only me. It spread, quietly, to every single face I loved.

I sat in the dark that night with the noodle pot and my whole exhausted family breathing around me — Mu Chen safe, the world that saved him still glowing faintly across the sky — and I understood that the easy part of the war was over. We’d spent a year being the ones who showed up to save people. Now, for the first time, the dark knew how to make us the ones who needed saving. And every rung I climbed, every bit brighter I got, only painted a bigger target on the people standing closest to me.

”It found the seam,” I said softly, to no one, to all of them. ”Not in me. In us.”

Yun Shu took my hand in the dark and didn’t tell me it would be all right, because she’s never once lied to me and she wasn’t going to start now. She just held on. Which, that night, was the entire point — the only thing any of us had ever really had against the dark. We held on.

But I lay awake a long time, looking up at a sky full of names I loved, every one of them suddenly a little more breakable than it had been that morning. I knew, the way you know a storm is coming by the color of the light, that the darkest part of this was still ahead of us.

And for the first time in a long time, I wasn’t sure we were going to be able to hold the line.
