Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

I couldn’t sleep those first nights after Millbrook, and it wasn’t just my name pattering down at me from a thousand distant fires.

It was the question. The one I’d asked on that porch and couldn’t answer—how do you fight mercy without becoming the monster?—turning over and over in the dark. Because that was the trap Lu had built, and the more I turned it, the more perfect and terrible it looked. He wasn’t taking anything. He was asking. He was going door to door across a grieving world, offering exhausted people a real, honest rest —setting down the whole weight, the loving and the fearing and the loss, and finding peace— and people were saying yes, freely, awake, in the full light of day, exactly the way we’d sworn was the only honest way to offer anyone anything. And every soul who said yes became a lock we weren’t allowed to open, because the only thing standing between them and their lost was their own free choice. The day we started overriding free choices was the day we became the Empire.

I’d built that rule myself, back in a town called Greywater. Offer the whole truth in the light, and let people choose, freely and awake, and never, ever choose for them. It was the thing that made us different from everything we fought. And Lu had picked it up off the ground where I’d set it down, turned it into a knife, and handed it back to me.

”We could just make him,” Tao Tao said, on the road, on the second day, in the flat furious voice she’d been using since Hen’s porch. My fierce junior believes in bringing people home like others believe in air, and watching a man refuse his own wife had hit her hard. ”You’re Mythic, Lin Bo. You could stand in that square and pull her home yourself, and it’d be done, and she’d be alive, and in a week he’d be grateful—”

”And then we’re the ones who decide what people are allowed to keep in their own heads,” I said. ”Which is exactly what the Empire did for a thousand years.” I said it gently because I understood the fury; I shared the fury. ”The second we force one soul, Tao Tao, we’ve lost the whole thing. We become just another power reaching into people’s minds and rearranging the furniture, and every reason anyone ever had to trust us is gone.”

She knew it. That was why she was so angry —because she knew it, and it didn’t help.

Ji Lan was quieter than any of us, and that worried me more than Tao Tao’s fury because Ji Lan is never quiet. She’d been strange since Millbrook—my glamorous storyteller, thirty years a master of Renown, sitting on her horse with a look I’d never seen on her face. And on the second night, she finally said the thing, low, staring into the fire.

”I don’t understand it,” she said like a confession. ”I’ve spent my whole life terrified of exactly one thing. Being forgotten. Going out. Having spent thirty years making myself real to the world and then just—fading, like I was never here.” Her jaw was tight. ”That’s the nightmare, Lin Bo. That’s the thing under the bed. It’s why I built the legend, why I fought so hard, why it wrecked me when a clerk out-trended me by accident —because at least being famous meant I couldn’t be forgotten. And now there’s a whole movement of people volunteering for it. Lining up, grateful, to be un-woven. Choosing the one thing I’ve been running from my entire life, and calling it peace.” She looked at me, and there was something raw and unglamorous and completely honest in her face. ”I can’t get my head around it. How do you tell a story that makes people want to keep their grief—when forgetting feels that good, and I of all people can’t even explain why anyone should be scared of it, because I’ve only ever been scared for myself?”

Nobody answered her. It was a real question, and it was the whole war, and we didn’t have it yet.

That’s when the Forgetters tried to stop us.

They’d gotten bold in the weeks since the great blanking—organized, disciplined, moving in the open now, Lu’s disparate grievers forged into something with a shape. A knot of them was waiting where the road crossed the river toward the next town: thirty or so, grey-robed, calm-faced, and they weren’t there to talk. Lu’s crusade wielded the dark’s own tool now—erasure-power, the thin cold reaching that had blanked Willowmere and a thousand towns since—and when we came down the road they raised it, all of them at once, and reached for the bridge, to blank it out from under us, to unmake the very road so we couldn’t cross to the town they were working.

I’d never tested Mythic against a thing like that. I found out what it was in about half a heartbeat.

The cold reaching came for the bridge—and hit me instead, because I was the brightest thing for a hundred miles and the dark can’t help reaching for the brightest thing. It broke against me like water against a cliff. It didn’t just fail to erase me. It couldn’t find purchase anywhere near me—the whole span of erasure-power thirty Forgetters had thrown flickered out in the air around me, because you cannot unwrite a thing the whole world knows this hard, and standing next to that thing is a very good place to keep from being unwritten. The bridge held. The road held. I raised one hand, almost gently, and pushed—not a strike, just the plain weight of being the most believed-in soul alive made physical—and thirty grey-robed Forgetters were moved bodily back off the road like leaves off a step, unhurt, astonished, cast aside by a power none of them could touch.

It was, I won’t lie, deeply satisfying. It was also completely beside the point, and their leader told me so.

She picked herself up off the riverbank, this calm-faced woman, and she looked at me—the most powerful being that has ever lived, who had just brushed her whole company away like crumbs—and she smiled, and there was no fear in it at all.

”Yes,” she said. ”You’re very strong. We know. The strongest there’s ever been.” She dusted off her robe. ”Move us all you like, demon-slayer. Blank-proof, unkillable, Mythic. It doesn’t matter. Because you can move a body with that hand, and you cannot move a single heart that has chosen rest—and hearts are the only ground this war is fought on.” She looked almost kind. ”That man in Millbrook. You could throw every one of us into the sea. You still can’t make him want her back. That’s the whole thing, isn’t it? All that power, and it’s the one power that’s no use here at all.”

And the terrible part is, she was right, and I knew she was right, and I stood on that road as the strongest man in the world and felt exactly as helpless as I had on Hen’s porch. My power had climbed to the top of the sky. And the war had gone somewhere my power could not follow it—into the private dark of grieving people, where the only thing that matters is what a heart freely chooses, and no amount of Mythic can reach.

We made camp early that night, all of us shaken in our different ways, and it was Mu Chen who finally broke it open.

He’d been silent through the whole thing—the road, the Forgetters, all of it—in the particular stillness of a man turning something over and over against his own scars. The gentlest healer alive, who carries a hole in himself he’ll never fill, the first person he ever healed, whose name the dark ate before he could keep it. He sat down by the fire and said quietly, ”The choice is a lie.”

We all looked at him.

”Not a lie he tells out loud,” Mu Chen said. ”Lu’s careful. He never says a false word—he offers the truth, in the light, freely, exactly like we do. That’s what makes it so hard.” He looked up. ”But he only offers two doors. He sits down with a grieving soul and says: you can carry this unbearable weight forever, or you can set the whole thing down and be free. Two doors. Suffer, or forget. And when those are the only two doors an exhausted person can see, of course they choose to set it down. Of course they do. I would. Anyone would.” His voice was steady, the steadiness of a man who has carried the worst thing and lived. ”But there was always a third door. There’s always been a third door. I’ve been standing in it for two years.”

And there it was. I felt the whole shape of the answer arrive.

”You don’t have to carry it as an open wound forever,” Mu Chen said, ”and you don’t have to cut it off. You can heal it. You can carry the person, the love, and even the loss, as a scar instead of a wound—a thing that’s part of you that aches sometimes but doesn’t bleed anymore. You keep everything. The dead, the love, the whole of it. And it stops being unbearable, not because you set it down, but because you learned to carry it.” He looked around at all of us. ”Lu offers to cut off the leg to stop the pain. We can teach people to let the leg heal. But he never shows them that door. Because if they could see it—if they knew there was a way to keep her and not drown—hardly any of them would choose the cutting. He wins by hiding the third door and calling the choice free.”

The fire popped. Nobody moved.

”So that’s how you fight mercy,” I said slowly, as it came clear. ”Not by forcing anyone. Not by overriding a single choice. You just—you refuse to let the choice be rigged. You go to every soul he’s offered two doors, and you show them the third one. The whole truth, in the light, like we always swore—the whole truth, all three doors, not his two.” I looked at Mu Chen. ”And then they choose. Really choose. Freely, awake, knowing everything. And if, seeing all three, someone still chooses the cutting—”

”Then we honor it,” Mu Chen said quietly. ”And we go. Because that’s a real choice, and it’s theirs.” His eyes were sad and certain. ”But at least it’s an honest one. At least no one’s setting down a wife they’d have kept, just because the only man who talked to them hid the door that would’ve saved her.”

I sat there and felt the ground come back under my feet for the first time since Millbrook.

Because we couldn’t fight Lu with power—the Forgetter on the bridge was right, my Mythic hand was useless where it mattered. And we couldn’t fight him by forcing anyone—the day we did that we became him. But we could fight him with honesty. His whole terrible weapon depended on keeping one door hidden. All we had to do— all, as if it were small—was be the ones who always, everywhere, showed the third door. Un-rig the choice. Complete the truth. And trust free souls, given the whole of it, to choose to keep the people they loved.

”We go back to Millbrook,” I said.

”He already chose,” Tao Tao said, but the fury had gone out of her voice, replaced by something like hope. ”Hen. He already said no.”

”He chose between two doors,” Mu Chen said, standing, brushing off his knees, the gentlest and now the most important person in our whole company. ”He never saw the third one.” He looked toward the dark road south, toward a peaceful man sleeping soundly in an empty house. ”Nobody showed it to him. So it wasn’t really a free choice at all. It was just the only choice he could see.” A small, sad, steady smile. ”Let’s go show him the rest of it. And then—whatever he decides—at least he’ll be deciding awake.”

We rode for Millbrook at first light.

And I want to tell you exactly what we meant to do, because it’s the most careful thing we ever did and it matters that we did it right. We were not going to force Hen. We were not going to drag his wife home over his refusal, or trick him, or wear him down. We were going to knock on his door and ask his permission—may we show you a thing you weren’t shown?—and if he said no, if he said leave me my peace, I don’t want to know, we were going to honor that, and turn around, and never trouble him again.

We were only going to refuse to let him stay forgotten because of a door nobody let him see.

That’s the whole difference between us and Lu, I think. It always was. He narrows the choice and calls it freedom. We were about to widen it back—and let a free man look at all three doors, in the full light of the truth, and finally, actually choose.
