Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

By the time we reached the Hush, I’d seen forgetting wear a lot of faces. I’d seen it as the murderer’s tool, in the Vale of Ash, where the Empire wanted to bury its own crime. I’d seen it as the easy escape, in Greywater and Saltmere, where the grieving were offered a way to set down their dead and rest. Every time, I’d found the thing wrong with it — the seam I could pull, the truth that turned the mercy back into a wound. I was getting good at it. I was, if I’m honest, a little proud of it.

Then we crossed the last marsh into a misty river-delta at the edge of every map we had, and I met a forgetting I could not say one wrong word about. It humbled me all the way to the ground.

The Hush was the most peaceful place I have ever stood. I want to be clear about that, because everything else depends on it. A low green country of slow water and white mist, a thousand quiet channels braided through the reeds. And the people who lived there were — I searched, believe me, I searched — happy. Not numb. Not blank. Not the smooth false calm of the Editor’s victims. Genuinely, deeply, unhurriedly at peace, in a way I had not seen one single time in all my travels through a world full of bright and suffering names.

They told us their way the first evening, with no defensiveness at all, because they had nothing to defend. The people of the Hush did not keep their dead. They kept no ancestors, no grudges, no legends, no history past a single generation. When someone died, the family wrote the name and the griefs of that year onto a paper lantern, and at the turning of the season they carried all the lanterns down to the great river. They spoke each name once, with love, set the lanterns on the water, and let the river carry them out to the sea — and they never spoke those names again. They called it the Letting. By it, they said, they had lived a thousand years without a war, without a vendetta, without a single grief that festered into something cruel, because they kept nothing in their hearts that could rot.

Nobody in the Hush was famous. Nobody was remembered. Their sky, when I looked up that first night out of old habit, was dark — not erased, not blanked, just empty. A whole people who had never once been written into the Heavenly Records because they had freely chosen, century after century, to never hold a name long enough for it to light. A thousand years of human beings, lived and loved and let go, leaving the sky as untroubled as still water.

It was the most beautiful and the most frightening thing I had ever seen. I did not have the first idea what to say to it.

The one who kept the rite was an old woman they called the Tender — they were a people of roles, not names, the living keeping their names only until the river took them — and on the second day she sat me down by the water with the kindness of someone who has buried a great deal of certainty and come out gentle on the other side.

”You carry your wounds, demon-slayer, and you call it love,” she said, watching a heron stand in the shallows. ”We let the river carry ours, and we call it peace. I have heard about your sky — full of names so bright they burn, all of them grasping to be kept, all of them suffering to stay lit.” She turned her soft old eyes on me. ”I have lived eighty years in the Hush, and I have never once lain awake with a grief I could not put down, and neither has anyone I love. We do not forget because someone made us, or to escape something, or because a god whispered it was mercy. We forget because, after a thousand years, we decided that holding on is how the heart learns to ache, and letting go is how it learns to rest.” She smiled, without one drop of malice. ”So. You have come a very long way to teach us to remember. Tell me, gently, for I mean you no unkindness — why on earth would we want to?”

And I had nothing.

I sat there with Granny Fen’s noodle pot beside me and my whole gospel turned to mist in my hands, because the Tender was not cruel and she was not lying and she was not the Empire and she was not the Editor. She was an old woman in a peaceful country telling me, truthfully, that her people had found a way to live without pain — a real one, a chosen one, a humane one — and asking me, with genuine warmth, why I’d want to take it from them. Every weapon I’d sharpened for a year was useless. The murderer wins if you forget — there was no murderer here. You’re only running from your grief — they weren’t running; they’d looked grief in the eye for a thousand years and decided, awake, to set it down. The Hush was the strongest case for the other side the whole war had ever put in front of me, and it was strongest precisely because it was honest.

It was the First Author who said the hard part, that night. She sat apart from the village with her ancient face turned to the dark, empty, peaceful sky.

”I have erased eleven thousand four hundred and six people, Lin Bo,” she said quietly. ”Violently. Against their will, most of them, to hold back the dark — and I carry every one of them, because that is my curse. And here is a people who do gently, lovingly, by free choice the very thing I was damned for doing by force.” Her voice was strange. ”Part of me has wanted, for a thousand years, exactly what these people have. To set it down. To rest. They are not our enemy. Do not ever let yourself believe they are. They have hurt no one. They are, by every honest measure, happier than we are.” She closed her eyes. ”Which is exactly why they are the hardest thing you will ever face. Because the enemy you can fight. But how do you stand in front of a happy, peaceful, gentle people and tell them their happiness is a thing the dying world cannot afford — without becoming the very thing we hate, the one who decides for others what they must keep?”

I didn’t answer, because I didn’t know.

And the one person who should have been able to break this open — who’d spent thirty years learning exactly how to make a story land in a stranger’s heart — was the one the Hush had quietly taken apart.

Ji Lan had tried, the first day. She’d done what she does — found the angle, shaped the tale, started to spin the gospel of remembering into something glorious, the way she’d lit a hundred towns across the continent. Your names could shine in the sky forever. Your dead could be legends. You could be remembered. It had landed in the Hush like an offered insult that everyone was too polite to name. These people did not want to shine. The whole idea of building a legend, of grasping to be kept, struck them as — not evil, just sad. A sickness of the heart that they had cured a thousand years ago. I watched something go out of Ji Lan’s face when she understood that her entire art — her gift, her glory, the thing she’d given thirty years to — meant nothing here. Worse than nothing.

Because the Hush was Ji Lan’s deepest fear, made into a whole contented civilization. A people who had chosen to be forgotten — and were happy. If the Hush was right, then every bright burning name in the sky was just a frightened soul grasping not to vanish, and thirty years of building her own legend had been fear dressed up as art, and all her glory was only a long, loud terror of the dark, empty, peaceful sky these people slept so soundly under.

She didn’t say any of that. She made a brittle joke about the mist ruining her hair and went and stood by the water alone. When Tao Tao trotted up scandalized that these people don’t have a single shrine, Lin Bo, not ONE, how do they even know who their heroes are — Ji Lan laughed, a little too sharp, and said maybe they were the only sane country in the world. Her eyes were too bright. She said it was the damp.

That was the night I understood we had finally found a forgetting the gospel could not argue with, and that the one voice who could have carried it was the one most undone by standing here.

I almost gave up. I want to be honest about that too. I sat by the slow water that doesn’t hold anything, in the most peaceful place on earth, and thought: maybe they’re right. Maybe this is just the better way, and I should leave these gentle people their thousand years of rest, and go.

And then a little girl came down to the river in the dark, alone, holding a paper lantern she would not put on the water — and I learned what even a kind and chosen forgetting costs the one it doesn’t fit.
