Chapter 936: Rusty and Oxy

At the same time that Arabelʼs avatar reached Istel City, Idan appeared in the sky above Rovan, a city plunged into chaos and besieged by evolved beasts.

Part of the city was destroyed, and the streets were filled with the blood of both beasts and defenders.

Despite the deep night, there was enough light in the city due to the influence of the approaching Anomaly.

A couple of days ago, this city was full of life and optimism.

However, the situation has changed dramatically in this short time.

Previously, with the help of the local military, defenders, and Awakened Ones, the city had no trouble fighting off waves of beasts. But after the sudden disappearance of these Awakened Ones, the cityʼs defenses began to crack.

Some residents were evacuated to central shelters, but many refused to leave their homes. There was no time to persuade them and waste energy on their evacuation. As a result, they became the first victims of the beasts, although they slowed down their progress somewhat.

Women and children were safely sheltered in safe shelters and buildings, while men, the elderly and everyone who was ready for battle took up arms.

They hoped that help would come, and they just had to hold out. At the same time, everyone understood that their strength would not be enough to defeat all the beasts.

In the end, they decided to take the animals away from the city center, where there were shelters with survivors. They understood that not everyone would be able to escape, but they were willing to make sacrifices to give their loved ones a chance to escape.

The tactics of distraction and the willingness to make sacrifices allowed them to hold out for so long.

With every passing hour, the number of animals grew with the appearance of a new wave, and some, having satisfied their hunger, attracted by the mysterious attraction of the anomaly, moved towards it.

The residents did not know that help would not come. The federation, which was supposed to protect them, abandoned them to their fate.

But they continued to fight, clinging to a ghost of hope.

Idan could no longer stand by and watch what was happening.

He released his Soul Force and activated [Fire Creation – 3 levels], creating many fire spears.

He then rushed towards the direction where the sounds of battle were coming from.

Not far from the city center, a small group of young men, led by a man in a military uniform, were desperately running from several feline-type beasts.

From time to time, they opened fire with their firearms, trying to stop the beasts, but their efforts were in vain.

The beasts easily dodged bullets, and their skin, which had become thicker during evolution, was almost impervious to penetration by ordinary bullets, unless they hit soft parts of the body, such as the eyes.

The Beasts chasing them also behaved strangely. They took their time killing their victims, as if enjoying their desperation and attempts to escape.

Among the group of people was a young guy named Rusty, who was cursing softly, cursing his life and the girl he was dragging along with him.

”Damn, damn, damn!” he repeated through his teeth. ”I shouldnʼt be here.”

He was an orphan, and he didnʼt care what was going on around him, except for the one he was dragging along with him.

If it wasnʼt for this stupid girl he liked and her bold decision to join the protection group by persuading him to go with her, he would never have ended up here.

If it wasnʼt for her, he wouldnʼt be running away from wild beasts right now, trying to save his life and the life of the one who brought him here.

”Forgive me, Rusty,” the girl cried, overcome with despair and almost resigned to the inevitable death.

”Shut up, you fool!” — Rusty exclaimed, not ready to accept death.

The leader of the group, fleeing, was the first to jump out of the alley and almost rolled down a rather steep flight of stairs.

”Stop!” he exclaimed, stopping Rusty and the girl who were following him, and turning sharply to the right, continued on his way.

But before Rusty and the girl could follow him, one of the young men bumped into the girl. Her hand slipped out of Rustyʼs tight grip, and she fell, starting to slide down the stairs.

”Oxy!” — Rusty shouted in horror.

The guy who pushed the girl just said, ”Oh, Iʼm sorry,” and was about to run on, when Rusty grabbed him by the shoulder and punched him in the face with all his might.

Itʼs unclear if this guy pushed the girl on purpose, or if it was accidental. But it didnʼt matter to Rusty.

Hitting the guy, he did not hesitate, rushed down after the girl.

”Scum!” the guy flared up, holding his bloody nose, and, raising his weapon, was about to shoot when the leader of the group abruptly intercepted his weapon.

”Leave them alone, theyʼre already dead,” the leader said and continued on his way. The young man, still angry but with a slight grin, silently followed him, as did the rest of the group.

Some of the hunted beasts followed the main group, but one feline beast headed towards Rusty and the girl.

”Oxy!”

Rusty quickly went downstairs to check on the girlʼs condition. During the fall, she hit her head hard and injured her right leg and arm.

Hearing the growling of the approaching beasts behind him, Rusty threw the weapon behind his back, picked up the girl in his arms and ran forward.

The growling of the beasts grew closer, as if they were deliberately trying to intimidate their victims.

With a heavy load on his hands, Rusty couldnʼt run far when the beast appeared from behind and slashed his back with its sharp claws.

”Ah!”

Rusty fell forward from the blow, and the girl, falling from his hand, rolled a little further.

”Rusty!”

By this time, Oxy had barely regained consciousness and, seeing this terrible picture, her heart almost stopped.

Both Rusty and Oxy didnʼt have the strength to get up.

”Itʼs... itʼs my fault,” — Oxy sobbed, looking at Rustyʼs bloody back.

”If it wasnʼt for me, he wouldnʼt be in this state.”

Rusty realized that his life had come to an end.

He even stopped swearing.

Along with the unbearable pain, he lost the feeling in his legs, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldnʼt run, let alone get up.

”I knew it... I knew she would be the cause of death,” he said with a slight grin.

”But I never imagined that it would happen so soon.”

Overcoming the pain, he looked up and met Oxyʼs eyes. Even now, with her tear-stained green eyes, she looked incredibly beautiful in his eyes.

”Donʼt cry, silly,” he said, trying to laugh.

But his smile faltered when he noticed an ominous shadow above Oxy, emitting an ominous growl.

His heart skipped a beat.

”No, no, no,” Rusty began to shout.

The red-furred beast, which looked like a large cat, took its time, enjoying the suffering of its prey.

To further increase his despair, the beast opened its mouth, intending to enjoy the taste of the girl beneath it.

However, the beast did not have time to carry out its insidious plan, as an irresistible Soul Force descended on it, immobilizing it.

And then a fiery spear fell directly on the beast, pinning it to the ground between Oxy and Rusty.
