I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 1030: Chapter 1029: His First Decision

Although that little boy said Tian Zhi could arrange things for him, Zhang Xiaodong knew that the identity of that young boy and girl was quite extraordinary. Even someone like Bai Yongquan, a top young master in Jiang City, had to fawn over them, which showed their status and position!

Tian Zhi’s identity might also be significant, but his accent doesn’t sound local to Jiang City. Even if he is really a dragon, a strong dragon doesn’t suppress a local snake.

So if Tian Zhi arranges it for him, he would likely be implicated.

It’s not that Zhang Xiaodong is particularly kind-hearted, but he can’t do that; it’s a matter of human nature. He considers himself a person with boundaries. If someone is kind to you and you end up harming them, you can’t live with yourself.

”Actually, the reason I’m here this time is not for you to arrange anything for me.” Zhang Xiaodong said, lowering his head, but he didn’t continue speaking the rest of his thought.

Was it to prove something?

Everyone’s an adult, it would be awkward to say it out loud, especially when you’re in such a desperate situation. Saying such a thing would seem ridiculous.

But he didn’t want to burden others for no reason. By others, he meant the only person who had shown him kindness, that little boy.

”Then what are you here for?” Tian Zhi pretended to be puzzled.

Zhang Xiaodong saw this and understood. Actually, his previous words were very clear. The other party was feigning ignorance to not have to arrange anything for him.

That seems normal because, after all, that child is just a child. Many things are not well thought out; that’s why he reached out to help. Perhaps it’s his purity that made him show kindness.

Adults are different. They understand the stakes involved, and even if they are powerful and fearless, they wouldn’t offend those people for the sake of a small figure.

It’s not worth it.

Not to mention they aren’t related by blood or anything; even if they were, most people would distance themselves in such situations.

These are all matters of a moment’s thought. Zhang Xiaodong took out a small porcelain bottle, placed it on the table, and said, ”Help me return this to that child, and thank him for me.”

After speaking, Zhang Xiaodong stood up. ”I’ll be taking my leave,” he politely said before leaving. Tian Zhi didn’t stop him, allowing him to leave.

”Senior Brother, are you really just going to let him leave like this?” Xing Jun couldn’t help but ask. After all, Little Rui asked him to come; how would he explain this to Little Rui?

Tian Zhi said nothing, stood up, and walked to the balcony. The black suit pants accentuated his straight legs, and the white shirt remained spotless, with the collar slightly open, revealing his exquisite collarbones inside.

Now Tian Zhi had long shed his youthful greenness. His mature and handsome appearance made many girls flock to him.

”Little Rui is still young. We need to help him keep a check on things,” Tian Zhi said.

This was Luo Yirui’s first time making such a decision, which was very important to him. Tian Zhi couldn’t let anyone harm him or take advantage of his kindness, so he didn’t trust this person from the start.

Xing Jun was still somewhat confused. He hadn’t spent much time in the small courtyard and hadn’t formed a rapport with Tian Zhi or Wei Zhongxun.

Tian Zhi watched the figure below gradually fade away and then instructed Xing Jun, who suddenly understood.

”Go ahead,” Tian Zhi said.

Xing Jun nodded and left the room.

Although it was only a brief contact, Tian Zhi could see that Zhang Xiaodong had quite a backbone. Perhaps that’s why Luo Yirui extended a helping hand; maybe there was a trace of his father in this person. Even if it was just a trace, it would move him.

Arranging for someone wasn’t a big deal, let alone Qingyu was aware of these ancient crocodiles’ existence. He was never afraid. Normally, they wouldn’t let the Nie Family notice them at this time, but this was Luo Yirui’s first decision.

He didn’t even need to ask Beisitian to know how she would decide.

Zhang Xiaodong walked slowly along the street. He had nothing urgent, so he wasn’t in a rush. Watching the hurried pedestrians on the road, he felt a bit more at peace.

He didn’t really want to go home because once he did, he would feel immense pressure, both from his family and himself. It seemed like if he didn’t go home, he wouldn’t feel this pressure.

He knew this was an escape, but so what? It was already like this. He would avoid it for as long as he could.

It was already dark when he saw five or six missed calls on his phone. He sighed and started walking back.

Their home was in the west of Jiang City. Because it wasn’t a major economic city, there weren’t many high-rise buildings. More of Jiang City’s residences were bungalows, with tall buildings only in the city center.

However, the bungalows in the west of the city were notoriously dirty and chaotic because it was relatively poor here, and no one managed it. The village team wouldn’t care, and no one was paying them.

As soon as Zhang Xiaodong entered the village, he saw people pointing and talking about him. Everyone knew his family’s situation recently had been bleak. They had offended some bigwig, and everyone lost their jobs, just waiting to starve to death.

Now, his wife couldn’t even properly undergo postpartum recovery. They couldn’t afford nutritional supplements, and her milk supply was dwindling. The soup was just vegetable soup. If her milk stopped, they couldn’t even afford formula for the baby. Formula was really expensive!

”Drink pig trotter soup? Have you seen our situation? We lost our jobs, and you want pig trotter soup? Be glad we have vegetable soup!”

Before even entering, Zhang Xiaodong heard his mother’s roar. He pushed the door open and went in, seeing his mother cooking soup in the courtyard.

He wanted to say a few words, but he swallowed them back. If he were capable, if he hadn’t caused trouble, his wife wouldn’t be missing out on pig trotter soup. The family wouldn’t have conflicts over such things.

He lowered his head and went inside, opening the door. His wife was leaning against the head of the bed holding the baby, silently crying. Seeing him enter, she wiped her tears and remained silent.

Zhang Xiaodong felt a twisting pain in his heart. At this moment, he regretted his actions. No matter how tough he was, he couldn’t live on nothing. If he had only bent a little, would things be like this now?

He didn’t know. He was utterly lost inside. The glimmer of hope Luo Yirui brought to his heart had long since disappeared, leaving him with nothing but gloom, feeling that the road ahead was daunting, mired with mud, and impossible to walk.

”I’m sorry to you,” Zhang Xiaodong said with guilt to his wife, while listening to his mother’s prattle outside.

His deepest guilt at this time was towards his wife. Not only did she lose her job, but she also couldn’t recover properly postpartum. A poor recovery could affect a lifetime.

The woman leaning on the bed cried even harder upon hearing this. She held grievances, but what could she do? Her husband’s actions weren’t wrong, but being right doesn’t pay the bills; they still needed to live.

”Xiaodong, go beg those people, give us a chance to live. How are we going to manage in the future?”

From outside came a voice full of resentment. It was his father.

Zhang Xiaodong clenched his fists tightly, gritting his teeth as he lowered his head.
