Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

Venielle did not explain the procedure until they had crossed through the mirror.

They stepped into a pale stone courtyard. Marek recognized the shallow basin and the covered walkway from what little he had seen through the mirror when Mara returned. Kellan, Dario, Nadia, Silas, Eren, Rafe, and Rhovan had come through with them.

Mara stood beside the basin while Venielle began explaining what she intended to do.

Venielle explained the procedure beside the shallow reflecting pool while Mara stood a few steps away.

”Say it without House terms.”

Venielle paused with one hand resting against the frame of the nearest mirror. ”Earth can still answer the question of where Mara belongs. Her civil records, family records, the Gemini registries that touched those records after the House roads opened, and the correspondence she used to return here all lead toward a living Mara Vale. As long as that continues, someone capable enough can follow the answers.”

”Sareth?”

Venielle nodded. ”And... the House of Gemini could do it much sooner.”

Marek glanced at Mara. She had folded her arms, but there was none of the impatience she usually showed when he asked Venielle too many questions. That worried him more than if she had complained.

”So you cut the route.”

”We close it here,” Venielle said. ”Earth reaches an endpoint. Mara continues somewhere the public Reference can no longer resolve.”

”And what happens at that endpoint?”

Venielle hesitated, and Mara stepped closer before the silence stretched any longer. ”Kuya Marek, I already agreed.”

”You can still change your mind.”

”I know.”

”Then I’m reminding you.”

Mara gave him a tired look, though her voice stayed quiet. ”I know.”

The courtyard had been cleared around the shallow basin, leaving the center open for Venielle, Mara, and the mirrors. The others stayed farther back beneath the covered walkway, with Rhovan among them, unusually quiet as he watched.

Marek kept asking until Venielle stopped trying to make the procedure sound safer than it was.

If they simply told Earth Mara had died, Sareth could eventually find the lie and use it. If they hid her without giving the public route a real ending, the unfinished connection would remain something he could follow.

What Venielle intended depended on the same abnormal correspondence the old paired mirrors had already recognized in Mara: two valid relations, neither false simply because the other existed. One would remain reachable from Earth long enough to close, while the other continued beyond it.

”Will she remember tonight?” Marek asked.

”Yes.”

”The shelter? Mom? Me?”

Mara’s eyes moved toward him, but Venielle answered. ”Everything up to the separation.”

”And if something goes wrong?”

”I stop it.”

”Can you promise she comes through this exactly the way you’re saying?”

Venielle was quiet for a moment. ”No. I can promise I’ll stop the procedure the moment it behaves differently from what I prepared.”

Marek hated the answer, though he trusted it more than a promise she could not make.

Mara moved beside him and opened her bag. ”Before you ask another fifty questions, take these.”

She pulled out the last two noodle packets she had been carrying and a small folded note tucked between them, then pressed everything into his hands.

”What’s this?”

”Put it in your bag.”

”What does it say?”

”You can read it later.”

He started to unfold it, but Mara caught his fingers and folded them back around the paper. ”Later, Kuya Marek.”

Marek stared at her before putting the note away with the noodles. Eight packets were already inside his backpack. Ten, now. The eleventh had gone to the hungry trainee Mara had fed. She caught him counting and quietly reminded him that he knew exactly where the missing packet had gone.

”I know,” he said, zipping the bag.

Mara smiled a little. Marek caught himself wishing he could keep her there a little longer.

Venielle uncovered the mirrors. Both were taller than Mara and faced each other across the shallow pool. At first, they reflected the courtyard normally. When Mara stepped toward the water, silver-white lines spread from Venielle’s fingertips into both frames.

”Recognition only,” Venielle told Marek. ”Do not open a Case unless I tell you something has gone wrong.”

Marek’s Ophiuchus Mark was already warm beneath his shirt. ”I know.”

Venielle kept her eyes on him for another second before turning back to the mirrors.

Mara looked at him from beside the pool. ”Please don’t interfere unless she tells you to.”

Marek kept the Case closed and watched the mirrors.

The warmth beneath his shirt remained as he looked from one reflection to the other. Nothing about his Mark reacted as though either one was wrong.

”Both are still valid,” Venielle said.

Marek looked at the two reflections again.

Both were Mara.

He had seen the result before, but the knowledge sat differently inside him now. One Mara stood beside the pool, yet both surfaces claimed her with the same certainty. There was no rejected copy, no convenient error he could point to and use as a reason to stop everything.

Mara stepped into the water. It barely covered the soles of her shoes as Venielle told her to stand in the middle and breathe normally while the correspondence settled. The Gemini lines across Mara’s palms brightened toward her wrists, and the reflections slowly stopped matching the courtyard.

Marek noticed the change first in the covered walkway behind him. In the left mirror, it stretched much farther than it should have, repeating through one opening after another, while the right mirror showed only empty space.

”Venielle.”

”I see it.”

Her answer came too quickly.

The water beneath Mara’s shoes darkened until it reflected something that was not above them. A moment later, the courtyard seemed to pull apart around everyone. The stone beneath their feet continued through overlapping glass planes, and the shallow basin appeared again and again at impossible distances.

Rhovan straightened. ”This isn’t yours.”

”No,” she acknowledged, her face losing the indifference she always had. Venielle moved toward Mara, but a woman walked out of one of the reflections before she reached her.

She wore pale Gemini robes without any visible insignia beyond the paired pattern glowing across both palms. Marek did not know her, but Venielle clearly did. Recognition crossed her face at the same moment the woman smiled.

”You came yourself,” Venielle said.

”I had to.”

Her gaze passed Venielle and settled on Mara.

Venielle immediately stepped between them. ”Leave.”

”You know why I’m here. There will only be one successor to the House of Gemini, Venielle. Mara Vale will not become another.”

Venielle attacked before the woman could move closer.

Silver-white light crossed the mirror-space so quickly that Marek saw the impact before he understood the movement. The woman disappeared from in front of Venielle and emerged from another reflection behind her, only for a second Venielle to meet her there. Both struck at once, and the nearest mirrors rippled from the force as the floor tilted beneath everyone.

Rhovan raised one hand, but Venielle shouted for him to stop before gold could leave his palm. ”This space belongs to her. Anything you send into a surface gives her another route.”

The woman’s voice came from several reflections at once. ”Still teaching while you’re in a fight?!”

Venielle ignored her. Two images of her moved in opposite directions, crossing through separate mirrors before reappearing around Mara. The woman met both. One Venielle broke apart into silver light when struck, while the real one caught the attacker’s wrist and drove her backward through a glass plane that bent without breaking.

Marek could not tell which direction was real anymore.

Some reflections showed attacks that had not happened yet while others continued movements already finished, and the stranger used that confusion naturally. She could step into one surface and emerge from another without crossing the distance between them, while Venielle had to keep pulling herself back toward Mara after every exchange.

They were close enough in strength that neither could simply overwhelm the other, but this place belonged to the stranger. Every mirror already answered to her.

Marek moved toward Mara and watched the pool slide farther away without moving at all. After another step, three separate pools stood ahead of him, each holding a different Mara. His Mark reacted to none of them as though they were false.

”Mara!”

”I’m here!”

Her voice came from directly ahead while the nearest reflection showed her behind his shoulder.

Venielle struck the woman across the face and followed before she could disappear again, catching her by the throat and slamming her against a surface that cracked outward in silver lines. For the first time, the stranger’s smile vanished.

Then, every crack became a doorway.

Hands emerged from them and caught Venielle from several directions. She tore free of the first two, but another dragged her shoulder sideways as a reflection opened beneath her feet. Venielle vanished halfway into it before forcing herself back out, blood spreading down one sleeve where something inside the glass had cut her.

Mara wanted to move toward her.

”Stay where you are!” Venielle shouted.

The stranger came out beside the pool.

Marek saw her before Mara did and ran, but the distance folded around him. One moment he was less than five meters away; the next, the pool seemed to be at the far end of a corridor made entirely of his sister’s reflections.

Rhovan shouted behind him, ”Don’t trust the distance!”

Venielle came through the rightmost mirror and hit the woman before she could reach Mara. They collided beside the pool, silver-white light bursting between them as Venielle drove her backward once, then again. The third strike never landed. The woman caught Venielle’s wrist, twisted, and the entire mirror-space rang with the sound of breaking glass.

Venielle dropped to one knee.

The stranger’s other hand had gone into the reflection beside her.

Not Venielle’s reflection.

Mara’s.

Venielle saw it at the same moment Marek did.

”NOOOOOOOO!”

She lunged, but the woman smiled and closed her fingers around something inside the glass.

A thin silver fracture crossed the reflected Mara’s chest.

Mara’s body jerked in the water. Her eyes widened and found Marek through the shifting mirrors, confusion passing over her face before pain replaced it.

”Kuya...”

Her knees gave way.

Venielle struck the woman hard enough to shatter the mirror behind her.

The woman smiled as she stepped backward into the broken reflection. ”There will only be one successor!”

Then, she laughed and disappeared into the mirror.

Venielle reached for her and caught nothing.

The mirror-space collapsed around them. The impossible distance folded away, and the pale stone courtyard returned around the shallow pool as though it had never left.

Mara was falling.

Marek reached her before she struck the stone. Her weight dropped into his arms without resistance, wet hair sliding across his wrist as he lowered her beside the pool.

”Mara?”

She did not answer.

Venielle stumbled toward them with blood running down her arm, but Marek barely saw her. His fingers were already against Mara’s neck, searching for a pulse that was not there. He checked again, pressing harder as if the problem might be his own hands. Then, he lowered his face near her mouth and waited, but no breath reached him.

”Mara... c-come on. Stop it. Please...”

Her eyes were partly open. Marek touched her face, called her name again, and when she still did not move, he laid her flat and began compressions.

Venielle dropped beside him. ”Marek—”

”Fix it.”

She froze.

”You told me you would stop it if something went wrong.” His hands kept moving over Mara’s chest even as his voice started breaking. ”Something went wrong. Fix it.”

Venielle looked toward the dead mirrors. ”I can’t reach what she severed.”

”No. You said you could protect her.”

”I thought I could.”

”Then do something!”

Marek’s Mark burned beneath his shirt. He opened everything he had held back during the procedure and searched Mara for an injury, a route, a condition—anything he could isolate and take into himself.

There was nothing active.

Whatever had killed her had already finished.

He searched again. The answer remained Mara Vale. The body under his hands was still his sister; Ophiuchus did not reject her or call her false. It simply gave him nothing he could remove to make her breathe again.

Rhovan finally came closer and knelt on the other side. He checked Mara’s neck, then her wrist, and whatever he found changed his face so completely that Marek immediately shook his head.

”Don’t.”

Rhovan looked at him without speaking.

”Don’t look at me like that. Help me.”

Rhovan moved closer and did, even though the silence around him had already said what Marek refused to hear.

Nobody pulled Marek away. He kept going until his arms shook badly enough that Rhovan had to take over for several compressions.

Nadia was crying near the wall. Dario stood with one hand covering his mouth, while Kellan’s fists were clenched so tightly that the Aries Mark across his hand had begun glowing. Eren, Rafe, and Silas had all moved closer, but none of them seemed to know what they were supposed to do after someone as powerful as Venielle had failed.

Venielle remained on her knees beside the pool.

Marek looked at her. ”You brought her here.”

Venielle did not defend herself.

”You told me not to interfere.”

”I know.”

”You told me you’d stop it.”

Her eyes lowered.

Something inside Marek finally gave way.

Less than an hour earlier, Mara had repaired the seam beside his pocket and complained about where he kept the gauze. She had given him her egg, asked about their apartment, their neighbor’s ladder, the bakery near her school, and a charger he had apparently stolen months ago.

She had asked so many ordinary questions that he had thought she was simply trying to catch up on the life they had lost.

He had answered every one of them because he believed there would be more time.

Outside the shelter, while remembering the night she had slept beside his bed during a storm, he had thought about telling her one day that she had once held his wrist in her sleep.

The thought had come so easily that he had let it pass.

Now, Marek held the same hand in both of his and waited for fingers that would never close around his again.
