Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

Marek crossed the street without checking traffic. There was almost none, but Rhovan still reached for his arm before stopping himself.

Amara waited beside the closed bakery as though she had not spent days making herself nearly impossible to find. Dust darkened the lower part of her trousers, and one sleeve of the gray knitted jacket had been repaired with a different-colored thread. Loose strands had come free from her hair, which she had clearly retied more than once.

As Marek drew closer, he noticed the cut near her eyebrow looked minor, though the weight she had lost was harder to ignore. Her left wrist moved with a slight stiffness, but at least she was standing evenly on both legs.

Amara gave him one slow look from head to toe. ”You look terrible.”

”Mara said the same thing.”

”She wasn’t wrong.”

Something in Marek’s face must have changed, because Amara stopped smiling and opened her arms. He hugged her before he could think of anything else to say.

The gray knitted jacket felt rough beneath his hands, dusty from the road, but the familiar smell of detergent still clung to it. Marek held her tighter than he meant to, and Amara did the same. Her breathing was steady against his shoulder, and for several seconds, he was content to stand there and feel it.

When they finally pulled apart, Marek’s attention returned almost immediately to the cut near her eyebrow.

Amara sighed. ”You found me and immediately started checking injuries.”

”You have a cut,” Marek said.

”Yes, Marek. I am aware of the cut.”

”How did it happen?”

”Mara warned me about this.”

That stopped him more effectively than the complaint.

”You saw her.”

Amara’s expression softened. ”Yes.”

Marek already knew they had met, but hearing Amara confirm it herself settled something the reports and secondhand accounts had not.

”She stayed with Venielle,” he said.

”She did.”

”You agreed?”

”Eventually.”

Marek narrowed his eyes. ”Mara said the argument lasted more than forty minutes.”

”She exaggerated.”

”Did she?”

Amara gave him a look. ”Not by much.”

Marek seemed satisfied with that.

Only then did Amara look past him. The others had kept their distance during the reunion, though none of them had gone far. Nadia and Eren stood near the shelter entrance, while Silas, Kellan, and Rafe remained closer to the damaged vehicle beside the road. Dario was speaking quietly with one of the volunteers. Rhovan stood nearest to Marek, and Amara’s attention settled on him last.

His posture changed.

It was not dramatic. His shoulders simply straightened, and the easy amusement that usually sat somewhere in his expression disappeared. No gold gathered beneath his skin.

Amara’s attention finally reached Rhovan, and something in his posture changed.

The shift was small enough that most people would have missed it. Marek did not. The amusement left Rhovan’s face, and his shoulders straightened slightly.

Amara noticed the change as well. ”And you are?”

Rhovan inclined his head. ”Rhovan Torsk.”

”Amara Vale.”

”I know.”

This time, Marek looked at Rhovan.

They moved inside the roadside shelter once people outside began paying too much attention to Rhovan. Several tables had been pushed against the rear wall to make room for cots and supply boxes, and emergency lamps hummed overhead. Amara took an unused cup of water from one of the tables after asking a volunteer.

She chose a place near the rear wall. Marek sat across from her, while Rhovan remained standing until Amara looked up at him.

”Sit,” she said.

Rhovan sat.

Marek looked from him to his mother. ”That was fast.”

”She asked politely,” Rhovan said.

”I also usually ask politely.”

”...”

Amara took a drink of water. ”You issue instructions in a calm voice. That is not always the same thing.”

Marek decided not to argue.

Amara watched him and Rhovan for a moment. ”How long have you known each other?”

”Several days.”

”That explains very little.”

”It explains most things,” Marek said.

Rhovan made a sound that suggested disagreement but wisely did not elaborate.

Amara’s gaze returned to him, and the same careful stillness entered Rhovan’s posture again. Marek caught it this time without needing to search for it.

”What?” he asked quietly.

Rhovan looked at him, then at Amara. ”Later.”

Amara lifted the cup toward him. ”Good answer.”

Rhovan seemed relieved when Marek did not ask again.

Marek let it go.

His mother gave him less freedom. Before he could ask about her route to the Botanical Institute, Amara made him sit still while she checked him in return. Her hands found the healing cut along his side, the raw skin over his right shoulder, and the bruises left by the department-store collapse.

”That one is already healing,” Marek said when her fingers stopped near his ribs.

”Still there.”

”It is not dangerous.”

”Still there.”

”The shoulder is mostly strain.”

”Still.”

By the third answer, Marek stopped trying.

Amara pressed lightly near the edge of the bruise and frowned. ”You found your sister and somehow arrived looking worse than she did.”

”The route was complicated.”

”So was laundry. I managed not to bleed on the way home.”

Marek let the answer stand. There was something strangely comforting about hearing his mother complain about his injuries again. He had spent days imagining what finding her would feel like, but sitting beneath a humming emergency lamp while Amara told him off had never been one of those possibilities.

Somehow, though... he preferred this.

Once Amara was satisfied that nothing on him required immediate treatment, Marek finally asked about Mara. His mother described reaching the Botanical Institute without explaining exactly how she had done it. She had spoken with Venielle before agreeing to leave Mara there, and when Marek asked whether Venielle had convinced her quickly, Amara laughed.

”That bad?” he asked.

”Worse.”

Rhovan looked between them but, for once, kept his opinion to himself.

Outside, something heavy rolled over the pavement as another group arrived. The noise blended into the shelter while Amara rested both hands around the cup and Marek watched her.

There were still too many questions. Why had she avoided registration points even while searching for him? How had she reached the Botanical Institute without using the routes everyone else depended on? And what had the woman at the civic center meant when she said Amara had seemed different?

For the first time since finding her, Marek did not ask all of them at once.

Amara reached across the table and took his hand.

His Ophiuchus Mark reacted immediately, and Marek went still.

The response was nothing like recognizing an injury or infection. There was no foreign condition trying to cross into him and no obvious route asking for a Vessel. His Authority reached the familiar boundary of his mother’s body and returned a distinction he had not expected.

It did not feel like an intruder or something attacking her. The recognition unsettled him because Marek had expected one clear answer from the person holding his hand, and his Mark returned more than one without declaring either false.

His fingers tightened around Amara’s.

She felt it. ”Marek?”

The black center of his Mark seemed to pull at his attention, searching for a boundary he had not asked it to define. Marek stopped it before Recognition could become anything more. He had learned that lesson too well to reach deeper without permission.

Then the pressure behind his right ear returned.

Marek’s eyes lifted to his mother.

This time the voice did not arrive from some distant point he could not locate. He heard it through the same air as the shelter, beneath the hum of the emergency lights and the movement near the entrance.

It came from Amara.

”Don’t.”

Marek stopped thinking about the questions. His attention fixed on the response from his Mark. ’Something was wrong.’

For a moment, Marek assumed Celeste had spoken beside his ear as she had throughout the past week, but something about the sound made him hesitate.

The voice had not reached him from the familiar place behind his right ear. It had come from the woman sitting across from him.

Amara was still holding his hand, watching him closely as his expression changed.

Marek stared at her without speaking, trying to understand why hearing that voice from her felt wrong in a way he could not immediately explain.

He knew it was Celeste’s voice, but the familiarity reached farther back than the short time since he had first heard her speak. Hearing that same voice come from Amara began pulling old memories to the surface, moments from his childhood that had never seemed connected before.

He remembered standing outside the kitchen as a child while Tomas and Amara argued behind a half-closed door. At some point, his mother’s voice had changed—not enough for him to think she was someone else, but enough that he had noticed it before dismissing the difference as exhaustion.

Other memories began surfacing with the same uncomfortable familiarity, ordinary moments he had forgotten because there had never been a reason to question them.

Marek’s hand tightened slightly around hers as the realization finally reached somewhere he could no longer dismiss.

A chill moved through Marek as the familiarity finally found its place. Celeste’s voice belonged somewhere in his childhood, tangled so deeply with his memories of Amara that he could no longer understand how he had gone all these years without recognizing it.

Every question he had asked about Celeste suddenly felt wrong. He had kept wondering where she was because he had never considered that the familiarity in her voice might come from somewhere much closer, somewhere that had existed in his life long before she ever spoke to him by name.

Marek looked at his mother as that realization settled into something he was almost afraid to understand. ”That voice...”
