Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

The chimes over Linden had not fully faded when the nearest House road began to change.

Its ivory-white surface stayed bright, but the crest moving along it suddenly burned red, the color spreading through the design until the entire mark looked heated from within. A moment later, warmth rolled across the street with it, followed by a pressure that had nothing to do with weight.

Kellan reacted first.

He opened and closed the hand bearing his Aries Mark as its lines brightened against his skin, red light gathering between his fingers strongly enough to stain his knuckles and palm. The air around him seemed sharper somehow, charged with the same restless force that had settled over the intersection.

Marek felt it before he could decide whether the sensation was coming from the road or from every Aries Mark answering beneath it.

Nothing pressed against his body, yet remaining still suddenly required effort. His muscles wanted to tighten, his breathing shortened, and for a few seconds the simple act of standing in place felt less like waiting and more like refusing a challenge.

”Aries,” Rhovan said.

The road settled again, its crest continuing into the distance, and another answered before the red had completely faded.

The next House announced itself through the ground.

Marek noticed when his next step came shorter than he intended. The pavement felt denser beneath his shoes, as though it were reluctant to give back any weight placed on it.

Around the intersection, people slowed instinctively. One man caught himself against a parked vehicle while another dragged a foot across the concrete instead of lifting it. Even the loose gravel had settled into the cracks, and somewhere beneath the damaged curb, metal gave a low groan.

Dario seemed untouched by it. His Taurus Mark had darkened across his skin with the sheen of worked metal, and above Linden, bronze was spreading through the crest of one ivory-white road.

He watched it for a moment before saying, ”Taurus.”

Rhovan nodded. ”They’re identifying themselves.”

Marek looked up again. ”The crests weren’t enough?”

”For you people on Earth, yes. Earth doesn’t know what any of them mean yet.”

Marek understood the point. Twelve Houses had just opened paths over a world that had spent most of its history unaware they existed. A crest meant very little when almost nobody beneath it knew what it represented.

But with everything happening above them now, that ignorance no longer felt harmless. Earth’s future could depend on how quickly its people learned what those symbols meant.

The third response warped the street around them.

The shelter entrance shifted sideways, leaving another version of itself half a meter from the first, complete with the same cracked panes, torn fabric, and people near the doorway. Across the road, the building doubled with it, two rooflines crossing through one another while every person beneath them briefly stood beside another version of themselves.

Marek blinked, and the displaced images slid back into place. Beside him, Nadia’s Gemini Mark was already glowing across her skin as she watched the House road overhead.

”Gemini...”

Nadia was staring at the road now. Marek had seen enough of Venielle’s work to recognize the same kind of relation behind it.

Another crest brightened.

A pale curve appeared beyond the buildings, too large for Marek to decide whether it belonged to the road or the sky behind it. The temperature did not drop, yet people near the shelter began moving closer together. A child reached for his father’s shirt. Two strangers who had spent the last hour sitting on opposite sides of the entrance shifted nearer without seeming to notice they had done it. ℯℯ𝑙.

Marek felt something equally difficult to place. It was not exactly safety, but the nearest word he had for it was home.

The feeling vanished almost as soon as he recognized it.

”Cancer,” Rhovan said quietly.

Another path brightened. It was from another House.

This time, warm gold spread through the crest, and the district brightened with it. Every window, puddle, shard of glass, and polished piece of metal caught the same point of light regardless of which direction it faced. People began turning toward it, though there was no single place in the sky where the source could be found.

Gold showed faintly beneath Rhovan’s collar, but he did not smile. Since the roads appeared, Marek had rarely seen him this serious.

”Leo,” he said.

The golden light soon faded from the district as another crest brightened overhead.

The change it brought was quieter. A fracture running down the shelter wall stopped spreading halfway through the concrete. Bent metal along one of the window frames shifted just enough to sit properly against its support, and a section of loose roofing that had been sagging since the fighting settled back into place.

None of the damage disappeared. The cracks remained, the metal was still bent, and the roof was still battered. It had simply stopped getting worse.

Marek studied the wall. ”Which Sign does that?”

”Virgo.”

Marek looked at the stopped fracture again. ”It didn’t repair anything.”

”Correction,” Rhovan said. ”Not restoration.”

Another crest brightened overhead.

Two pale lines appeared across the street, facing one another from opposite sides.

The air between them tightened.

A loose section of metal near the shelter dragged several centimeters across the pavement before stopping opposite a heavier piece of debris. The smaller object trembled, then pressed harder against the ground until both sides seemed to carry the same weight.

Nearby, a bent signpost shifted under its own imbalance. One side dipped, the other rose, and the movement stopped only when the post settled between the two lines.

Eren stared at his Libra Mark as its pattern brightened.

Marek watched the strange equilibrium hold. ”Libra?”

”Yes.”

Dr. Mercer came to mind. The Libra who had spent years preparing Project Meridian was somewhere on Earth, and Marek still had no idea how much of this Mercer had expected. He left the thought there. One House road was enough to deal with, and eleven more still hung above the world.

The two pale lines across the street faded. The pressure between them loosened, and the debris they had balanced stayed where it was.

Then, the light around the shelter began to dim.

The darkness thickened beneath the damaged vehicles and along the half-closed entrances around the street. Under the collapsed awning across from the shelter, it outlined a space nobody had searched since the fighting ended.

Marek glanced at Silas. ”Scorpius?”

Silas gave a small nod.

Sareth had left only minutes ago, so Marek recognized the difference immediately. His darkness had reached for people, records, and buried truths.

This one stayed where things were hidden.

A gust swept through the street.

Dust lifted from the pavement and streamed between the buildings in a narrow line, ignoring every side street as it passed through the intersection. Small points of white light appeared along the same path, one after another, continuing beyond the last visible buildings until Marek could no longer follow them.

Rafe watched the trail disappear. ”Sagittarius.”

The next crest crossed one of the ivory spans above Linden, and slabs of dark stone began taking shape beneath it. Gold traced their edges as they stacked higher, each terrace wider and heavier-looking than the last. The change reached the street below as a slow increase in pressure. Gravel settled deeper into the pavement, damaged railings strained against their bolts, and several loose sheets of metal flattened with a dull scrape.

”Capricorn,” Rhovan said, watching the terraces continue upward until the highest disappeared beyond sight.
