Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

Marek was used to understanding things by separating one from another. With Amara and Celeste, however, he did not know where to begin.

The simplest description he could manage was that Amara remained his mother while Celeste was another person sharing the same body and much of the same life, although even that explained almost nothing. Celeste remembered the Prime Continuum and understood things about routes that Marek had only begun learning after Day 367. Somehow, she also remembered a dinner from when Marek was six and had pushed peas beneath his rice because he thought covering the green parts was enough.

”You remember that?” he asked.

Amara’s posture changed only slightly before Celeste answered through her. ”You assumed nobody would notice the color difference.”

”I was six.”

”That explains the quality of the attempt.”

A small smile appeared when Amara returned. Marek was beginning to notice the difference between them now that he knew there was one, although the fact that he could do so after spending his entire life with the same face remained deeply uncomfortable.

”You both remember it,” he said.

”We were both there,” Amara replied. ”That doesn’t mean we remember it the same way. I remember being annoyed because you lied about eating them. Celeste remembers watching you move the rice around and wondering why you thought you were convincing.”

Marek looked at her. ”Again, I was six.”

”You still lied about eating them.”

The shelter had grown quieter since their conversation began. Most of the people who had been moving between the tables were settling onto cots, while volunteers continued passing through the treatment area behind the fabric partitions. The emergency lamps cast a pale light over the rear wall, and somewhere beyond it, someone was trying unsuccessfully to convince a child to drink water.

Rhovan remained across from them after asking Amara if she minded him staying. He knew enough about the Prime Continuum to recognize if anything they described became dangerous or impossible, but for once he seemed content to listen.

Marek continued with the memories because they were the only part of the situation he could compare against something he had actually lived through.

He remembered the apartment fire from when he was ten. Smoke had entered the hallway from another unit before most of the residents understood what was happening, yet Amara had moved him and Mara toward the rear stairs almost immediately. Marek had always assumed years of hospital work had made his mother unusually calm during emergencies.

Celeste remembered why they had taken that particular stairwell.

”You stopped at the second landing,” she told him. ”People were coming down behind you, and you kept trying to look back.”

”I thought Mara was still upstairs.”

”She was already ahead of you.”

Amara continued in her own voice. ”Celeste remembered the rear stairs. I was carrying Mara.”

Marek remembered his mother’s hand grabbing the back of his shirt and pulling him forward, but until now he had never known that the decision leading them toward those stairs had belonged to someone else.

A label on Amara’s medicine had the wrong information on it, and Marek remembered standing nearby while his mother refused to leave the counter until the pharmacist replaced it. He had always remembered the argument clearly because Amara had been unusually angry that afternoon.

”What I didn’t know,” he said slowly, ”was that Celeste noticed the label.”

Amara nodded. ”I argued with the pharmacist.”

”And she found the mistake.”

”Yes.”

Marek leaned back and looked at the notebook beside his hand. He could probably spend the rest of the dark period asking about his childhood and still fail to find the exact place where one woman’s memory ended, and the other’s began.

Apparently, there was no exact place.

Amara explained that they did not automatically remember everything the other experienced. Some moments remained clear to both of them, while others reached Celeste or Amara only partially. Privacy had taken years to establish because privacy became considerably more complicated when two people shared the same body.

Control was equally complicated.

Celeste could not simply take over whenever she wanted, nor could Amara dictate every moment of their shared life without resistance.

”How are the rules decided?” Marek asked.

”The same way most rules between two people are decided. We talk about them.”

”Where are they written?”

Amara followed his eyes toward the notebook. ”They aren’t, and you are not writing them down for us.”

”I was only looking at the page.”

”You were thinking about it.”

Marek could not deny that without lying, so he left the notebook alone.

Across the table, Rhovan wisely kept his expression neutral.

Most disagreements between Amara and Celeste remained arguments. If something happened too quickly for discussion, Celeste could sometimes hold the body briefly even when Amara would have preferred otherwise, but doing so without a serious reason could damage the trust between them afterward. Their limits had changed over the years because both women had learned which boundaries the other would accept.

”So neither of you controls the other,” Marek said.

”Not the way you mean.”

”Can either of you force the other out?”

Amara’s expression tightened before she answered. ”Not safely.”

Marek did not ask again.

Instead, he asked about the voice Celeste used to reach him. Amara could sometimes hear parts of those conversations, but not automatically. The connection behind Marek’s right ear, therefore, was not simply Celeste speaking through the body they shared

He wrote ROUTE near the top of a clean page and stopped there. Giving the mechanism a name did not mean he understood it.

After a while, he turned to Rhovan. ”Have you encountered anything like this?”

Rhovan considered the question before answering. ”There are Prime cases people would call possession, and some Sign phenomena can affect identity badly enough to create similar appearances. I know of nothing that matches what your mother is describing.”

”Why not?”

”Because Amara is describing a relationship that has existed for years. Celeste is not behaving like a temporary intruder, and Amara clearly does not consider herself occupied by one. I would rather admit I do not have the correct category than force them into the nearest available one.”

Amara nodded. ”That’s fair.”

Marek looked at Celeste again. ”What Cycle did you reach?”

Celeste was quiet for a moment before answering. ”Eleven.”
