Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

Marek knew Amara had already answered the question.

That was what made asking again feel worse.

The next morning, she asked to speak with him alone. Rhovan and the others stayed outside the smaller shelter room, while Celeste agreed to remain quiet unless either of them addressed her directly. Beyond the fabric partition, volunteers moved between the treatment area and the corridor with medicine, folded blankets, and metal trays that knocked against one another whenever the carts turned too sharply.

Marek waited until Amara sat across from him before speaking. ”I know what you already said.”

Amara gave him a look. ”Then this should be a short conversation.”

”It probably won’t be,” Marek replied. ”The Case said forced separation was invalid under the way I defined it. That doesn’t mean it will always be impossible.”

”I know.”

”If I become strong enough to understand the shared state properly, and if I find a way to separate you without hurting either of you...” He paused because he could already see the answer forming on her face. ”Would you reconsider?”

”No.”

Marek leaned back in his chair.

Amara did not look annoyed. That somehow made it more difficult.

”You answered before I finished.”

”You asked me this already.”

”I changed the conditions.”

”You just made them longer.”

”That matters.”

”Not to my answer.”

For several seconds, Marek listened to someone outside complain that a box had been delivered to the wrong treatment table. He had known Amara would say no. He had asked anyway because some part of him had expected better wording to produce a different result.

It had not.

”What if sharing one body becomes dangerous later?” he asked.

”Then we deal with that if it happens.”

”What if one of you starts hurting the other?”

”Then we deal with that too.”

Marek opened his mouth again.

Amara reached across the table and rested her hand over his notebook before he could turn the next hypothetical into another question. ”You’re trying to make me agree now to something I’ve already told you I don’t want.”

”That’s not what I’m doing.”

”What are you doing?”

”Preparing.”

”For a rescue I didn’t ask for?”

Marek looked at her hand.

Inside his head, preparation still sounded reasonable. Learn more. Understand the boundary. Find out what Ophiuchus could and could not do. If something ever went wrong, he would not be standing there without an answer.

The problem was that he kept treating the existence of an answer as if it would eventually become permission to use it.

”I need to know what I’m working toward.”

”Then work toward being able to choose.”

”I can already choose.”

Amara shook her head. ”You’re very good at choosing to act.”

Marek frowned.

”I mean choosing not to.”

What made it worse was that he understood her immediately.

He had spent enough time learning how to stop Recognition before Intake, how to close a Case before it deepened, and how to refuse a route before it formed. Those were forms of control he respected because he could point to the exact moment where something dangerous might happen.

Amara was asking him to stop before any of that became necessary, rather than waiting until fear had already given him a reason to act.

”What if I spend years learning how to separate a shared state safely and you never want me to use it?”

”Then you learned something useful.”

”For who?”

”For someone who asks.”

Marek stared at her.

Amara’s expression softened slightly. ”You keep talking like learning something for me means I owe you the chance to use it on me.”

”I didn’t say that.”

”No. You just keep finding longer ways around it.”

Marek wanted to object, but every version of the objection he came up with seemed to prove her point.

He looked down at his hands instead. ”You’d really be fine with me doing all that work and using it on someone else?”

”I raised you. Most of what you learn will eventually help someone who isn’t me.”

”That’s different.”

”Why?”

”Because I’d be learning this because of you.”

”And if someone else needs it more?”

Marek had no answer that did not make the problem worse.

The room remained quiet until a cart passed outside. One wheel squeaked every time it turned, and the sound continued down the corridor before finally disappearing.

”You think I’m trying to make the choice for you,” Marek said.

”I think you’re scared,” she said, as though it was a fact. ”And when you’re scared, you want something you can do. I understand that. But I’m still allowed to tell you I don’t want this.”

Marek had already learned a version of that lesson with Mara. He could question her decision, prepare for what might go wrong, and make sure she understood the risks, but none of those things gave him the right to choose for her.

Understanding that with Mara did not make it any easier now that the person refusing him was his mother.

His Mark warmed faintly beneath his shirt. No interface appeared, and Marek did not invite one.

”Fine.”

Amara raised an eyebrow.

He sighed. ”I know. You hate that answer.”

”I don’t hate it. I just never know what you mean by it.”

”I mean, I can learn if I want to. I can understand how separation works if Ophiuchus ever lets me. But that doesn’t mean I get to use it on you.”

”And if I still say no?”

Marek looked at her for a long moment.

He had answered versions of this question before. Somehow, saying it when the person refusing him was his mother made it feel less theoretical.

”Then no.”

Amara’s shoulders lowered.

Marek noticed her eyes becoming wet a moment later and immediately looked uncomfortable. ”Don’t do that.”

”Do what?”

”That.”

”You’ll have to be more specific.”

He stood before she could make him explain. Amara stood too, and the hug that followed was quieter than the one they had shared when he first found her. She pressed one hand against the back of his head the way she used to when he was younger.

”You make everything difficult,” she murmured.

”You raised me.”

”Don’t put that on me.”

”Then blame Dad.”

Amara laughed softly against his shoulder.

Tomas entered the conversation through that one sentence, but neither of them followed him any farther. Marek still wanted answers about his father, Project Meridian, and everything Celeste knew. This time, he let the questions remain where they were.

When he stepped outside later, Rhovan sat on the curb with Dario. The shelter entrance behind them had become busier, with two volunteers carrying water containers inside while another argued with a driver about where the next supply vehicle was supposed to unload.

Dario stood when Marek approached and headed back inside, leaving Rhovan on the curb.

Rhovan glanced at him. ”How did it go?”

”She still said no.”

”I figured.”

Marek sat beside him. ”I’m leaving it there.”

Rhovan nodded and said nothing more.

Celeste’s voice reached Marek faintly behind his right ear.

”Thank you.”

Marek said nothing.

Later during the light period, Amara complained that her left wrist still hurt from the days she had spent moving between shelters. Marek noticed the way she avoided bending it while helping a volunteer separate folded blankets.

His attention went to the joint automatically.

This time, he stopped before his Mark did anything.

”Do you want me to check that?”

Amara looked at him, then at her wrist. ”Yes.”

Only then did Marek take her hand.

Recognition formed around the injury without reaching toward the shared state. He kept the Case limited to the wrist and found an ordinary sprain that was already healing. There was nothing Ophiuchus needed to remove, so he closed the Case and asked one of the volunteers for a cold pack and elastic wrap.

The whole thing took less than a minute.

Amara rotated her wrist carefully after he finished. ”Better.”

Marek began putting the remaining wrap away.

Amara looked at him. ”You asked before touching it this time.”

He glanced at her. ”You said yes.”

”I did.”

Later, Marek opened his notebook to the page where he had written ROUTE while trying to understand Celeste’s connection. The single word had been useful when he knew almost nothing about how she reached him, but it explained considerably less now.

Beneath it, he wrote:

PERSON FIRST. MECHANISM UNKNOWN.

His pen remained above the page.

He almost added everything he thought separation might require, then stopped himself. The examination had already shown him what happened when he built assumptions into a Case. Writing guesses as rules would be the same mistake in a different form.

Instead, he added one line.

CAPABILITY DOES NOT CREATE CONSENT.

Rhovan entered carrying two bottles of water and placed one beside Marek before taking the other chair.

Marek took one bottle and leaned back in his chair.

The problem would probably survive several Cycles. He still did not know whether separation was possible, what Ophiuchus would require if it was, or whether Amara would ever change her mind.

For the first time, those questions no longer felt like instructions.

Amara had already answered the only one that belonged to her.

Marek did not need to ask again.
