Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

Marek discovered another use for Degree IV while they were still following Amara’s trail southwest.

The group had stopped at a roadside shelter to compare its visitor records with Rafe’s map. Nadia and Silas were speaking with volunteers near the entrance while Eren helped move a damaged water container.

Marek was just walking through the treatment rooms with Rhovan when pressure tightened beneath his right shoulder.

It was not one of his Cases.

Inside the nearest room, an Ophiuchus Astrant was trying to pull a fever from a child and had opened the transfer too broadly. Marek entered before Rhovan finished asking what he had noticed.

The Astrant was a woman in her thirties. One scale on her Mark was green, and two were red, all already occupied. A fourth had begun responding to the child on the cot. He had a severe infection and had already been given antibiotics by the shelter clinic. The woman had meant to take only the fever and inflammatory response, but her Case was too broad.

Once the transfer opened, it began pulling at anything the Case had failed to separate from the infection, including the medication already circulating through the child’s body.

”Stop,” Marek said.

The woman looked at him, panic already visible in her face. ”I can’t close it.”

Marek moved beside the cot but did not open one of his own scales. He used Controlled Recognition only far enough to separate what the other Case had blurred together: the child, the infection, the fever response, the medication already treating him, and the woman who had opened herself as the intended Vessel.

Too many connected things had been treated as though they were the same condition simply because they existed inside the same body.

Marek defined what had to remain where it was before reaching toward the active route. Resistance struck his right shoulder immediately.

The Case was not his. Understanding its mistake did not give him ownership over it, and he could not command another Ophiuchus bearer as though the boundary belonged to him. Instead, Marek held one distinction against the transfer: the antibiotics were treatment already accepted by the child, not part of what the woman intended to take.

The route pulled against that distinction.

The Ophiuchus woman’s body jerked once. Marek felt the transfer try to carry the medication forward with the fever response, but he kept Recognition separate from Intake and refused to become another destination. Degree IV kept his own rule intact while another route moved against it.

The medication dropped out of the transfer first. Once that distinction held, the woman’s Case narrowed enough for her to regain control. Marek talked her through closing the route instead of taking it from her, and a few seconds later the pressure between them disappeared completely.

The child remained feverish, but his breathing was steady. The antibiotics were still in his system, untouched by the transfer.

Marek stepped away from the cot and immediately regretted moving so quickly when pain ran from his right shoulder down his arm.

Rhovan was beside him before he reached the doorway. ”Sit.”

”I’m fine.”

”Your hand is shaking.”

Marek looked down. Indeed, his hand was shaking.

The Ophiuchus woman remained near the child, watching the medic check him again. ”How did you do that?”

”Your route included something you never intended to take,” Marek said. ”Next time, define what must stay before you open the Case. Do not wait until the transfer is already moving.”

She looked at her Mark, then repeated the last part quietly to herself.

Rhovan waited until the shelter medic had resumed care before speaking. ”You adjusted part of another Astrant’s transfer without accepting the condition yourself.”

”I interrupted an unintended inclusion.”

”At Cycle I, Degree IV, that is a very careful way of making what you just did sound small.”

Marek rolled his shoulder carefully. ”I stayed inside the same rule. I didn’t gain anything new.”

Rhovan’s expression changed slightly. Marek knew that look. He had reached the lesson before Rhovan could turn it into a speech.

”Exactly,” Rhovan said. ”Integration does not require a collection of new tricks. The rule has to remain true while more things move around it.”

Marek gave him a warning look before he could continue, and Rhovan stopped there.

It took several minutes for Marek’s hand to stop shaking. Around them, the shelter continued with ordinary problems. Someone argued over how long a phone could remain attached to the only working charger when there had been no signal for hours.

Behind a hanging sheet, a baby started crying until an exhausted voice began soothing it. The woman checked the child often enough that the medic finally told her he was stable. Marek understood why she kept checking.

For days, he had imagined finding Amara as another endpoint: reach her, confirm she was alive, then deal with whatever came next. Mara had already shown him that she could be safe without him. His mother seemed to be doing the same.

”Mara was fine without me,” Marek said. ”My mother probably is too.”

Rhovan glanced at him. ”You say that like it’s bad news.”

”It isn’t.”

”But?”

Marek looked toward the treatment room. ”I’m getting used to it.”

He was glad they could take care of themselves. That did not mean he was used to being somewhere else when they did.

The Ophiuchus woman approached again before they left. ”Could I learn to do what you just did?”

”I don’t know,” Marek answered. ”Your Mark may not respond exactly the same way mine does.”

She glanced toward the child. ”But you didn’t take anything from him.”

”No. I only kept the medication separate long enough for you to close the transfer yourself.”

Rhovan had been listening from beside the doorway. ”Sharing a Sign does not mean two Astrants will develop exactly the same way.”

The woman looked between them before returning her attention to Marek. ”So I shouldn’t try what you just did?”

”Not by deliberately widening another transfer,” Marek said. ”Start by making sure you know what belongs inside the Case and what needs to stay outside it.”

Her eyes moved toward the cot again. The child was still feverish, but the antibiotics remained in his system, untouched by the transfer.

”I almost took his medicine.”

”Yes.”

The answer clearly did not make her feel better, but Marek saw no reason to soften it. She had noticed the mistake now, and the child was stable. Well, to him, that mattered more.

They left once Marek’s hand stopped shaking. Rhovan handed him water before they continued the search, and Marek drank without arguing this time.

”Degree IV does not remove strain,” Rhovan said once they were back on the road. ”You held a boundary against a route that did not belong to you.”

”It stopped when I told it to.”

”Yes.”

Rhovan did not add anything else.

They had gone two blocks when a shelter worker called after them. ”Marek Vale?”

Marek stopped.

”Someone asked me to tell you something if you came through. She wouldn’t give a name. Looked around forty. Faint-gold hair. Maybe a hospital worker. You match the description she gave me.”

Marek became still. ”What did she say?”

The woman repeated it carefully. ”Tell him to stop looking behind him. Then she said, ’He always checks the wrong direction when he’s worried.’”

Rhovan watched his face. ”That sounds personal.”

”It is.” Marek looked behind them anyway.

The road behind him was almost empty. Two volunteers crossed between shelters with folded blankets stacked against their chests, while farther down the block, metal scraped against pavement as someone dragged a damaged barricade aside. The last stretch of dark still lingered between the buildings, broken by shelter lamps and pale reflections across the shattered storefront windows, but there was no faint-gold hair among the people moving through them.

Marek turned back and saw a woman standing across the street beside a closed bakery. He stared long enough to notice everything at once.

Her faint-gold hair had been tied loosely behind her head, with several strands escaping around a face that looked thinner than he remembered. The gray knitted jacket was the same one he knew, only dustier now, hanging loosely from her shoulders. Her hospital shoes were worn pale along the edges, and a small cut near one eyebrow had already begun to darken.

She looked exhausted, as though the roads between them had taken their share from her, but none of that mattered as much as the simple fact that she was standing there alive.

For days, Marek had known his mother only through the traces she left behind. Now she was standing across the street from him, and for the first time, he did not need anyone else to tell him where she had gone.

Amara Vale was looking directly at him. Her tired expression softened into a small smile. ”Still checking the wrong direction.”

Behind him, the shelter continued as though nothing had happened. A cart rattled over broken pavement, and voices carried from the treatment rooms. Marek barely heard any of it.

He had spent so much time thinking about what he would ask when he finally found her that, now that she stood before him, every question had vanished.

Somewhere between recognizing his mother’s face and hearing her voice again, the fear and exhaustion of the past several days seemed to lose their weight.
