Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

Marek did not release his mother’s hand after the warning, and Amara did not attempt to pull away. For several seconds, the shelter continued around them as though nothing had changed. Someone dragged a folded cot across the floor near the entrance while a volunteer called for more clean water from the treatment room, and the emergency lamp above their table continued its low electrical hum. Marek heard all of it without really listening.

Rhovan had been leaning back in his chair, but the change in Marek made him straighten. ”What happened?”

Marek kept his attention on Amara. The voice that had told him not to continue Recognition was already gone, yet the sound remained clear enough that he could not convince himself he had mistaken where it came from. ”Say something.”

Amara’s brows drew together. ”I’ve been speaking to you since you found me.”

”I mean the other voice.”

Rhovan turned toward Amara at that, though he said nothing. He could not have known what Marek meant, but Amara did.

Her expression shifted slowly enough that he might have missed it on any other day. There was no confusion in her face and no surprise at the question. When Marek told her that she knew what he was talking about, Amara looked down at their joined hands before giving a small nod.

”Yes.”

The answer brought back the kitchen memory that had surfaced earlier during the search. Marek had been young enough that the counter seemed too high, and although he could no longer remember what started the argument, he remembered the moment Amara changed. Her shoulders settled, and her breathing slowed before she answered in a voice that still sounded like his mother’s while carrying something he had never been able to name.

He had dismissed the difference as exhaustion when he was a child, but hearing Celeste through Amara now made that old explanation feel suddenly inadequate.

Marek’s fingers tightened around her hand before he noticed what he was doing. ”You were there before any of this happened.”

Amara watched him for a moment before answering in her own voice. ”She was.”

He tried to return to the memory without forcing details into the parts he could no longer remember. Tomas had said something about a question. Amara had answered differently, and the argument had ended the instant his father noticed Marek listening from the kitchen doorway.

At the time, the change had meant nothing to him beyond the uncomfortable knowledge that his parents were discussing something he was not supposed to hear.

Another memory surfaced while he was still thinking about it. Marek had once been sick enough that Amara checked his temperature every few hours, and he had pretended to be asleep because he did not want the thermometer under his tongue again. Someone had sat beside him and told him to stop pretending because his breathing gave him away. He had always remembered that voice as Amara’s.

Marek looked at the woman across from him and said the name carefully. ”Celeste.”

Amara’s thumb moved once against the back of his hand. The change that followed was so slight that Marek could not have explained it to anyone else. Her face remained the same, but her posture settled into the same stillness he remembered from the kitchen, and when she spoke, the voice aligned perfectly with the memory beside his childhood bed.

”You were terrible at pretending to sleep.”

Marek could only stare for a moment as the last possibility of coincidence disappeared. He had heard Celeste before he knew her name, long before he knew anything about Astral Marks, and long before the voice behind his ear had given him any reason to question where he knew it from.

”That was you.”

The woman holding his hand watched him quietly before answering, ”Hello, Marek.” 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ

His chair scraped backward as he stood, his hand slipping free from Amara’s in the movement. The sound was sharp enough to turn several heads near the treatment room. Rhovan rose almost at the same time, though he stayed beside the table rather than stepping between them. Amara’s face had not changed, and that made Marek’s uncertainty worse because he no longer knew which name belonged to the person looking back at him in that moment.

”What did you do to my mother?”

Celeste did not flinch. ”Nothing.”

Marek remained standing. ”Then tell me where you are.”

”You’re looking at me.”

He tried to make the answer fit something he already understood, but every simple explanation failed as soon as he compared it with what he knew.

Amara was still unmistakably his mother, but the childhood memory made one thing impossible to ignore: Celeste had been part of her life long before Marek ever heard her voice behind his ear.

Rhovan glanced between them before asking, ”Who are you talking to?”

Marek barely looked away from Amara. ”Celeste.”

The name clearly meant nothing to Rhovan. He looked as though he wanted an explanation, but after seeing Marek’s face, he stayed quiet.

Marek sat again because standing had not helped him understand anything. Amara remained across from him with one hand resting on the table, though this time he did not reach for it immediately. He asked whether Celeste could hear him while Amara was speaking, and Celeste said she usually could. When he asked whether Amara heard the conversations that reached him through the connection, the answer was less consistent.

”Sometimes.”

Marek’s mouth tightened. ”You really like that word.”

”I use it when the answer changes.”

Hearing such a familiar Celeste response come from his mother’s mouth made the familiarity feel almost invasive. He had argued with Amara in almost the same way growing up whenever he asked a question that sounded precise to him and incomplete to her. Until now, he had never considered that the resemblance might have a reason.

His Mark warmed beneath his shirt before he consciously asked it to do anything.

Marek felt Recognition trying to form around the person across from him, but he stopped it before a Case could take shape. He had already reached farther than he should have when he first touched Amara, and the warning had been clear. Whatever existed between Amara and Celeste, Marek had already gone far enough without asking.

Rhovan noticed the brief glow beneath Marek’s collar. ”Did your Mark react?”

”Yes, but I stopped.”

That answer seemed to satisfy him for the moment. Marek returned his attention to Celeste and waited until he could ask the question without hiding several others inside it.

”How long have you been part of my mother’s life?”

Celeste answered without hesitation, ”Since before you were born.”

Marek had expected a difficult answer, but not one that reached beyond his entire life. He looked at Amara’s face and tried to imagine the years before he existed, knowing now that something he had always treated as part of his mother’s private history had included another person whose voice he would eventually hear inside his own head.

”So you’ve known me my entire life.”

”Yes.”

”And when you started speaking to me recently, you let me think we had only just met.”

Celeste remained calm. ”I told you we had met before.”

Marek remembered asking exactly that much earlier in his search for Mara. Celeste had answered yes and then refused to explain what she meant.

At the time, he had assumed she was referring to an encounter he had forgotten or something connected to the strange events surrounding his Awakening. It had never occurred to him that the meeting she meant belonged to memories old enough that he had mistaken her voice for Amara’s.

”Does Mara know?”

The posture across from him softened before the answer came, and Marek realized Amara had returned. He could see the difference now only because he knew there was one to notice.

”Not everything,” she said.

Marek leaned closer. ”You knew about this the entire time.”

Amara did not pretend to misunderstand. ”Yes.”

”You let her use your body.”

Her expression hardened. ”It is also her life.”

The answer caught Marek before he could continue. He had been trying to understand the situation by deciding where Amara ended and Celeste began, but his mother was not speaking like someone describing an intruder she had tolerated.

She was correcting the assumption before he could build anything else on top of it.

”What does that mean?”

”It means you are already trying to make this simpler than it is.” Amara remained calm, though exhaustion had begun to show more clearly around her eyes. ”You found me less than an hour ago, Marek. I am not going to explain years of my life in one sitting because you finally noticed there was another person involved.”

Rhovan turned his attention toward the shelter entrance and left the conversation alone. A volunteer passed their table carrying a stack of folded cloths before disappearing behind the partition leading into the treatment room. Nobody else nearby seemed to understand what was happening, and Marek was beginning to accept that he did not either.

Amara continued before he could ask something else. ”Celeste did not arrive after Day 367, and whatever happened between us was not an attack that erased or replaced me. I was afraid of her once, but that was a long time ago.”

Celeste answered through the private connection rather than Amara’s mouth. ”She was not especially welcoming.”

Amara closed her eyes briefly. ”You used to speak through my mouth without asking.”

Celeste answered through the connection, ”I learned not to.”

”It took you long enough.”

The exchange sounded too ordinary for what Marek had just learned, and that was what made it difficult to dismiss. They spoke like two people continuing an argument Marek had entered years too late.

For most of his search, he had treated Celeste as a mystery that appeared beside everything else happening to him, while Amara remained a separate problem moving somewhere through Linden.

Sitting across from Amara now, Marek could no longer separate Celeste from the life he remembered. The realization left an ache he could not quite place, as though something familiar had shifted without actually being taken away from him. He had spent all this time wondering where Celeste came from, only to realize that some part of her had been there whenever he thought of home.
