Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

The earlier offers were now being turned into actual agreements. Cancer’s reunion corridors would operate beside existing family-registration systems rather than replace them, while Taurus teams would need local approval before altering damaged ground or structures. Sagittarius would distribute updated maps through Earth agencies, and Aquarius support would remain limited to infrastructure that still existed.

Capricorn also offered advancement doctrine, although the public summary came with enough restrictions that Kellan stopped reading halfway through.

”Does this thing ever explain how to advance?” he asked. ”Half of it is telling us what not to do.”

Eren glanced at the screen. ”Probably because they expect someone to try those things first.”

Kellan looked at him for a moment, then somehow continued reading.

The newer proposals drew more attention. Aries offered training teams for governments that requested them. Gemini offered translation, identity verification, and technical help with duplicated records or manifestations. Pisces proposed supervised sleep wards for areas affected by dream contamination. Libra offered legal observers for negotiations involving House law, while Leo offered to coordinate joint efforts when separate House missions overlapped.

Marek glanced at Rhovan when House Leo offered to coordinate the joint missions.

Rhovan caught the look. ”Don’t.”

Marek looked back at the screen.

The argument became more serious when several Houses asked whether dangerous Astrants could be transferred to them in emergencies. The House of Aries pointed out that an untrained bearer who lost control of heat or kinetic force could injure or kill someone before local authorities even understood what was happening.

Earth’s representatives agreed that the danger was real, but they still refused automatic transfer.

The argument lasted longer than most of the technical discussions because nobody could hide behind theory. People had already been injured by uncontrolled manifestations on Earth, and every House representative could point to examples from older Newborn Worlds where hesitation had made things worse. Earth officials answered with a simpler concern: emergency power had a habit of becoming ordinary power if nobody wrote down where it ended.

Emergency assistance could be requested. Individual arrangements could be negotiated. Local authorities could accept House training, observers, or temporary support. None of that became universal custody over every person carrying a corresponding Mark.

Marek approved of the answer and kept that opinion to himself.

Then, the House of Gemini requested voluntary assessment access to minors displaying high-order correspondence effects.

His attention fixed on the screen.

The representative did not say Mara’s name. There was no reason she would, at least not publicly, but Venielle had already warned that the House of Gemini could eventually take an interest in what Mara had done. Now formal House systems were operating on Earth, and the distance between eventually and now had become much shorter.

”Can they find her?” Marek asked.

Rhovan took a moment before answering. ”Not by opening an ordinary registry, if Venielle is still doing what she was doing.”

”That is not the same as no.”

”No.” Rhovan leaned forward, forearms resting on his knees. ”Venielle was using older correspondences and keeping those minors outside the systems most House officials would normally rely on. She is also stronger than the delegated Voice they sent, it seems. That does not make Mara impossible to find. It means the representative cannot simply request a file and expect a location.”

Marek looked down at his phone.

Nothing from Mara. Nothing from Amara either.

Celeste had not spoken since Amara left. Marek noticed the silence more now that he knew she had been there for years, inside memories he had always thought belonged only to his mother. Amara could take care of herself, and Mara had chosen to stay with Venielle, but he still checked his phone every few minutes.

Rhovan noticed where he was looking. ”If there were a problem, Mara knows how to reach you.”

”She doesn’t always tell me right away when something’s wrong.”

Near the end of the light period, the House of Gemini issued its first public technical notice.

It was not about recruitment. The notice warned governments, banks, hospitals, registration offices, and security agencies against treating duplicated identities or mirrored records as automatic fraud. Under certain Gemini manifestations, two records could remain valid because they continued to reference the same person through an active correspondence. In more complicated cases, one correct relation could exist from more than one reference position without either becoming false simply because the other also existed.

Marek read the notice three times. He kept stopping at the same paragraph.

He thought of Venielle’s lesson with the two keys. Even when Marek lost track of which one was the source, the correspondence did not. The old paired mirrors had reacted differently to Mara. Each had recognized her as Mara Vale, and neither had called the other answer false.

The word from Ilyara Sen’s dream returned to his mind.

’True.’

One mirror. Another mirror. Both giving the same answer to the same girl.

The notice did not prove that Ilyara Sen’s dream was about Mara. But it did confirm that Venielle had been describing a real Gemini phenomenon. The House of Gemini was now warning Earth about the same thing: one person could hold more than one valid relation at once without either becoming false.

Marek saved the notice.

Around him, the shelter had begun settling in for the dark period. Volunteers lowered the volume on the public screens while people unfolded blankets across cots and cleared food containers from the registration tables. Outside, the House roads still cast pale bands across the damaged intersection, bright enough to leave long shadows beneath the parked vehicles.

Marek had just put his phone away when Nadia stopped speaking in the middle of a sentence.

He followed her gaze.

The concrete wall beside the shelter entrance had changed.

At first, it looked wet, a narrow vertical sheen running from shoulder height almost to the floor. Then, the reflection deepened. Blank concrete disappeared behind a glass surface tall enough for a person to walk through, and a courtyard appeared on the other side.

It was not the shelter courtyard.

Pale stone surrounded a shallow basin under unfamiliar light. Part of a covered walkway crossed the background, and several figures moved beyond it without seeming to notice that one wall now opened into Linden.

Rhovan was already on his feet.

Nadia moved closer to the edge of the room but did not approach the mirror. ”Please tell me that’s Venielle.”

A figure crossed the distant courtyard.

Marek stood before he had decided to.

Blonde hair appeared first, followed by a familiar face that turned toward the correspondence as if she already knew exactly where to look.

Mara stepped through.

The mirror held behind her for another second, long enough for Marek to see the courtyard and the shallow basin beyond. Then, the image flattened into an ordinary reflection of the shelter.

Mara looked him over from head to toe.

”Are you doing okay?” she asked.
