Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

Marek asked permission before examining the shared state again, and Amara made him repeat exactly what she was agreeing to before she offered her wrist. ”Examine. Not remove.”

”I know.”

”Say it back.”

Marek gave her a flat look. She waited without lowering her hand, so he repeated, ”Examine. Not remove.”

”Good.”

They had moved into one of the smaller rooms beside the shelter’s treatment area, where two empty cots had been folded against the wall to make space around a narrow table. The fabric partition at the entrance blocked very little sound. Volunteers continued moving through the corridor with water and medicine; someone was sorting metal trays nearby, and farther into the shelter, a child had begun complaining that everyone kept telling him to sleep when he was not tired.

Rhovan stayed near the opposite wall instead of sitting beside them. The others had been asked to give the room some space, which left him close enough to intervene if Marek’s Mark did something neither of them expected without crowding Amara during the examination.

Before touching her, Marek explained the limits he intended to keep. If a transfer route started forming, he would stop. If Amara or Celeste felt pain, they would tell him immediately. If the Mark showed him something he did not understand, he would leave it alone until he understood what he was looking at.

Amara raised an eyebrow. ”That last rule sounds new.”

”It is.”

Celeste’s voice reached him faintly behind his right ear. ”Keep it.”

Marek chose not to acknowledge the approval and placed two fingers against Amara’s wrist.

He let Recognition form carefully, allowing the familiar pressure beneath the Ophiuchus Mark to settle without following it into Intake. The response came almost immediately, but he kept the Case shallow. He was examining the distinction, not trying to contain anything.

The first pass identified two centers of self-reference within the same living state, with neither given priority over the other. Marek closed the Case before the pressure deepened, waited until the tightness across his shoulder eased, and repeated the same examination.

The structure returned unchanged.

Amara watched his face. ”Same?”

”Yes.”

Rhovan did not interrupt.

On the third pass, Marek changed how he defined the Case. He treated Amara as the Vessel and Celeste as an occupant, without classifying Celeste as a Condition.

The interface rejected it almost immediately.

[CASE BOUNDARY INCOMPLETE]

Marek closed the Case rather than pushing for more detail.

Rhovan noticed. ”You defined them differently.”

”Yes.”

”And the Case rejected it?”

”Yes.” Marek rested his hand on the table while the pressure in his shoulder faded. ”I treated Mom as the Vessel and Celeste as someone inside her. Apparently, that distinction doesn’t work.”

Amara squeezed his fingers once before he pulled his hand away.

For a moment, Marek wondered whether the gesture had come from her or Celeste. The question stayed with him only briefly. Whoever had initiated it had used the same hand, and he was already beginning to understand that trying to assign every movement between them would create distinctions neither woman had claimed.

When Marek used Recognition again, he rebuilt the Case without treating their shared state as possession. Amara and Celeste were both included from the beginning, while transfer and removal remained outside the examination entirely.

The interface took longer to settle.

[SUBJECT A: AMARA VALE]

Several seconds passed before the next line appeared.

[SUBJECT B: CELESTE]

Marek’s breathing slowed.

He had expected Celeste to appear somewhere in the structure, but he had not expected the Mark to place her beside Amara under the same designation. He kept the Case shallow and asked whether anything within it qualified for removal.

The answer did not come immediately.

While he waited, the shelter returned around him in pieces he had stopped noticing. Shoes scraped along the corridor outside. Someone near the treatment tables asked for clean cloth. A metal container struck another with a hollow sound before a volunteer apologized to whoever had been resting nearby.

Then the interface settled.

[REMOVABLE CONDITION: NONE]

Marek read the line again.

He did not end the examination immediately, but he also did not push the Case any further. He remembered the Ophiuchus bearer at the roadside shelter whose transfer had begun taking a child’s antibiotics along with his fever. Her Case had failed to keep the medication separate from what she intended to move. Degree IV had allowed him to hold that distinction without taking the transfer into himself, but it had not given him the right to rewrite another bearer’s Authority however he pleased.

The same caution applied here.

Marek added himself as a possible receiving Vessel without establishing a transfer route. The result remained unchanged. Then, he tried defining Celeste as something foreign to Amara, something that did not belong within her current state.

The Case remained incomplete under that distinction.

That told him more than another failed attempt would have.

The problem was not the lack of somewhere to put Celeste. Recognition simply did not identify her as something removable from Amara.

Rhovan had been watching quietly. ”You found the boundary.”

Marek kept his attention on the interface. ”I found where my assumption stops working.”

He rebuilt the Case around the two subjects the interface had identified, without treating either of them as an occupant. They shared the same body, but he had no reason to assume Recognition could tell him which of them had come first. He had already seen what happened when he built an answer into the question.

This time, he asked whether they could be forcibly separated without either of them being lost in the process.

The response came quickly.

[FORCED SEPARATION: INVALID]

Marek closed the Case.

The pressure across his shoulder had begun reaching down his upper arm, though it was nowhere near the shaking that had followed the fever-transfer correction earlier. He flexed his fingers once beneath the table and waited for the sensation to recede before he looked at Amara again.

She had pulled her wrist back but had not moved away from him.

”What did it say?”

Marek took several seconds to arrange the answer without turning the interface language into something more certain than it was. Celeste spoke through the connection while he was deciding.

”Tell her.”

”It recognizes both of you as subjects,” he said. ”When I treated you as the Vessel and Celeste as someone occupying it, the Case rejected that distinction. When I stopped assuming one of you had priority, it recognized both.”

Amara remained quiet.

”I asked whether there was anything in the Case that qualified as a removable Condition. It said none. Then I asked whether I could separate you by force without losing either of you.”

”And?”

”Invalid.”

Some of the tension left Amara’s shoulders.

Marek noticed because he had been watching her closely throughout the examination. ”You expected a different answer?”

”No.”

”You look relieved.”

”I’m relieved you stopped when you got your answer.”

That answer bothered him more than he expected. ”You thought I might not?”

Amara rested her hand on the table between them. ”I thought you might convince yourself that one more question wasn’t the same as trying.”

Marek almost objected, then remembered how many times he had reopened a Case because the previous answer had been incomplete.

”That is different.”

”Sometimes.”

Celeste gave a quiet laugh through the connection.

Marek ignored her. ”I asked permission.”

”You did.”

”And I followed the limits.”

”You did that too.”

Amara was not accusing him, which somehow made defending himself feel less necessary. She had made him repeat the rule before they began because she knew him well enough to know that curiosity could become persistence before he noticed the difference.

Marek looked down at the notebook near his elbow. He wrote the two subject classifications, followed by the final response, but did not add an explanation beneath them. He had several possible explanations already, and none of them had survived contact with the Case particularly well.

Rhovan leaned back against the wall. ”For what it is worth, I would not treat that result as proof that separation is impossible under every circumstance.”

”I wasn’t going to.”

”It means the operation you asked for was invalid under the Case you defined.”

”I know what invalid means.”

”And I’ve learned that doesn’t always stop you.”

Marek looked at him.

Rhovan lifted one hand. ”You stopped.”

The shelter noise returned to Marek’s attention before he could answer. Someone dragged a crate along the corridor, a volunteer called for another blanket, and the same child from earlier announced that he was still awake with enough volume to prove the point.

Amara’s mouth moved slightly, though she managed not to smile.

Marek closed the notebook.

He still wanted to know why Ophiuchus recognized Amara and Celeste the way it did. He wanted to know what made their shared state different from possession, why the Mark had initially reacted when he touched Amara, and what kind of history could leave two subjects where he had expected one.

None of those questions required him to open another Case before Amara wanted one.

Amara reached across the table and held out her hand again.

Marek took it.

His Mark did not react again. He felt only the warmth of her fingers around his and the faint roughness of her palm. There were still questions he wanted answered, but for once, holding her hand was enough.
