Sunblind Serpent: The Zodiac Without A House

Vacant Keeper.

Back then, Marek had assumed the name referred to the empty center of the Ophiuchus Mark and the Scales waiting around it. He understood more of it now.

Custody did not have to become ownership. Something could pass through his hands without becoming his, simply because he was strong enough to hold it, and the same had to remain true when the time came to let it go.

Sareth raised one hand, and the remaining black routes pulled against Marek’s Case together.

The force nearly dropped him. Marek bent one knee against the road and held the boundary while the pressure climbed through his shoulder. He did not reach for the secrets behind those routes or the people connected to them. Instead, he followed Sareth’s claim through each one until they all arrived at the same conclusion.

Nobody else carried this, so Sareth had to.

That was the part Marek rejected.

The third Scale burned.

”If no one carries a truth, it disappears,” Sareth said.

”No. It ends.”

”Those are the same thing.”

”They’re not.”1

Marek tightened the Case around Sareth’s ownership and left the truths beneath it untouched.

The black lines stretched across the shelter windows snapped loose from Sareth’s claim. The marks clinging to Rhovan’s wound stopped pulling toward him, while the reflections holding old scenes slowly lost their depth until they showed nothing more than damaged glass and the people standing in front of it.

Nobody forgot what had happened. The memories were still theirs.

Marek had only taken away Sareth’s false ownership over them.

He felt the third Scale strain as Sareth lost one connection after another. The Case was not erasing anything he had uncovered. It was only taking away his ability to keep treating completed events as though they could never end without his permission.

Something shifted inside Sareth’s shadow.

The darkness beneath him thickened instead of retreating, and two narrow shapes slowly opened within it like eyes.

”You cannot release what has nowhere to go.”

Marek looked at him. ”It doesn’t need another owner.”

The darkness around Sareth’s feet broke apart.

Every remaining witness-line jerked toward him at once.

Sareth’s shadow swelled across the road as his Authority resisted the separation. For an instant, the black routes began pulling themselves back together, and the pressure against Marek’s Case multiplied hard enough to drive pain through his shoulder and down his arm.

Marek held the boundary.

He was not stronger than Sareth. If the contest widened even slightly, the difference between their Cycles would crush him. So Marek gave him nothing else to fight over—not the memories, not the truths, and not even the Black Errancy. He kept the Case fixed on the ownership alone.

The connections snapped.

Sareth staggered for the first time.

Marek had never taken the abandoned truths into custody, so there was nowhere else to send them. The Case held only the claim Sareth had forced over them. Once that claim had nothing left to attach itself to, Marek no longer needed to hold it either.

The pressure inside the third Scale collapsed, and the gray slowly faded.

Sareth dropped to one knee.

Sareth’s dark coat had shifted open along his right side during the fight, leaving part of the Scorpius Mark near his waist exposed. The same black break still ran through the tail of the pattern, proof that Marek had not removed whatever Black Errancy had done to it.

His shadow had not returned to normal either.

Marek had not cured Sareth. He had only removed the part that never should have belonged to him in the first place.

Inside the shelter, the curtains remained lowered, but nobody pretended the secrets Sareth had exposed were unknown again. The voices behind the fabric had grown quieter as people spoke to one another, filling in what Sareth had left out instead of letting his version of what happened speak for them.

Sareth listened to them for several seconds.

”Closure is concealment.”

Marek shook his head. ”No. It means something can end without being erased.”

Heat spread across his Mark before Sareth could answer.

The interface appeared.

[DEGREE V — MASTERY ACHIEVED]

[CYCLE I CONTROL: COMPLETE]

[SUNBLIND CONDITION: UNFULFILLED]

The writing remained long enough for Marek to read it before his vision started to blur.

His knees buckled, and Kellan caught his arm before he could hit the road.

”Easy,” Kellan said. ”You’re overexerting yourself.”

”I’m fine.”

”You were falling.”

Kellan stared at him for a second, looking genuinely baffled. Marek could apparently understand things nobody else could and still fail at something as simple as taking care of himself.

Marek pulled his arm free once he was steady on his feet again and found Sareth watching him.

Beneath his shirt, the Ophiuchus Mark was still warm.

Sareth glanced toward the black seam still cutting through his Scorpius Mark. It had not disappeared.

”You left the Errancy.”

”I wasn’t trying to take it.”

Marek studied him for a moment. ’He knows Ophiuchus can contain it.’

And that was something he would have to ask Rhovan about.

Sareth rose slowly. Most of the routes he had spread through the shelter were gone, but nothing about his expression suggested he considered the matter finished.

”Then I will return.”

Marek met his eyes. ”With fewer routes.”

A cracked pane beside the shelter entrance brightened before either of them moved again.

Sareth turned sharply.

Marek did the same a moment later, his attention snapping toward the glass as silver-white light crossed its surface. He had not noticed the correspondence forming. For someone who had spent the past week learning to track routes and connections, that was unsettling.

Venielle Zilis appeared on the other side of the reflection. Marek could see little behind her except a pale wall and the edge of another mirror. Mara was not with her, which was probably deliberate. The last thing Marek wanted was to give Sareth another glimpse of his sister or another trace he might learn how to follow.

Sareth did not move closer. His shadow gathered more tightly beneath his feet as his gaze settled on Venielle.

”So you found him,” Venielle said.

Sareth’s gaze stayed on the reflection. ”How long have you been there?”

Venielle did not answer him. Her attention remained on Marek.

”Keep him away from the mirrors.” She pressed her palm against the glass.

The image behind her collapsed at once. The pale wall and the second mirror disappeared, leaving Marek staring at an ordinary cracked pane and his own faint reflection.

A moment later, he felt the connection he had barely noticed before disappear with it.

Venielle had closed the correspondence.

Sareth noticed the correspondence disappear. His attention stayed on the pane for another second before returning to Marek.

The water in the drainage channel darkened behind him.

Marek noticed it first, but Sareth was already stepping toward the edge. The reflection beneath the water stretched around his heel, its surface showing depth where there should have been only shallow runoff.

”So that’s it?” Kellan called.

Sareth glanced at him, then at Marek. ”No.”

He stepped backward.

His body sank into the reflection without disturbing the water. By the time Marek reached the channel, only his own face and the damaged shelter remained on its surface.

Venielle was still visible through the cracked pane.

”He’ll search again,” she said. ”Because losing a route doesn’t erase the trace that led him to it.”

Marek turned toward her. ”Can he still reach Mara?”

”Not through the correspondence I just closed.”

”What if he finds another?”

”Then I’ll know.”

Marek looked at her.

Venielle shifted her hand against the glass. ”Sareth is good at finding routes, but that doesn’t mean he’s good at keeping them once I notice.”

The silver-white reflection thinned until the cracked pane showed Marek and the shelter entrance again.

Marek was still watching the pane when Dario called his name.

Rhovan was still where they had left him.

The black lines around his wound had faded into thin stains along the torn edge, and none of them reacted when Marek approached. The cut underneath remained deep enough that pressure alone was no longer going to be enough.

Marek crouched beside him and pulled the blood-soaked fabric away from the wound. ”You’re going to need stitches.”

Rhovan glanced down. ”I was hoping pressure would be enough.”

”It isn’t.” Marek tightened the bandage around his side before Rhovan could shift again.

Dario set the medical case beside Marek and opened it for him. Someone had found a working lamp, and Nadia held it close enough for Marek to see the wound properly.

The cut was deeper than he had hoped.

He washed the blood away, threaded the needle, and began.

Kellan watched the first stitch go in, then turned away before Marek started the second.

Silas noticed. ”Afraid of needles, aren’t you?”

”Shut up, dumbass.”

”Dumbasses usually call other people dumbasses. It’s like looking at your own reflection,” Silas replied in a flat tone.

Nadia laughed.

Kellan kept his back to them.
