Bear School Astartes

The concept of evolution was defined simply and clearly in the basic education Lann received.

Unlike typical fantasy works, the real process of evolution is cruel and involves great sacrifice.

Real evolution is: within a species, a particular trait on an individual is beneficial for survival. Thus, through the process of natural selection, other individuals without this trait perish, and only the descendants of the individual with the trait survive. This unique biological trait is steadily inherited.

Therefore, we can say—this species has undergone evolution.

It does not manifest in a certain generation or a specific individual.

Rather, it is a life iteration at the level of ’species’.

Even in artificial cultivation, wanting to cultivate a flower with a unique color—something that sounds simple—requires cultivating the original species for dozens or hundreds of generations.

Continuously selecting flowers that closely match the target color to remain, and discarding the rest.

Gradually strengthening the target traits over generations, until finally achieving the desired flower.

Changing the gene of a specific ’flower’ to make it immediately become the target color within its own lifecycle... this is not nature’s method, this is genetic engineering.

Still, it is super-advanced genetic engineering.

But, in this mysterious and extraordinary world of nature...

A Barbaric Jaws Dragon, just because Lann almost broke its leg, has... completed evolution on the level of ’individual’?!

Lann looked at the giant beast in front of him, still in a state of anesthesia, then looked at the seemingly nonchalant scholars, blinking his eyes in bafflement.

No... what’s going on with you guys?

What’s going on with it?!

And what’s going on with me?!!

The fact that nature has done something this outrageous doesn’t stir any of you at all?!!!

A gland that is compatible with the original biological system... such a thing, in a normal natural world, might not even be achieved after tens of thousands of species iterations!

It’s highly probable that it would become extinct before it evolves!

”Mentos, let me confirm...”

Lann hesitantly asked.

”Did you not find any traces of artificial intervention on Fierce Claw?”

Lann looked up at the sky, somewhat skeptical whether there might be some advanced civilization monitor in outer space in this world.

”Strictly speaking, I cannot guarantee it 100%, sir.”

The voice of the biological neural interface echoed in his mind.

”But at least from the biological tissue level, I can’t see any traces of artificial intervention; everything seems naturally formed.”

Mentos’ meticulousness somewhat eased Lann’s anxiety.

After all, this is a learning device from the Human Revolution Alliance, and even if its computing power isn’t fully unlocked yet, its knowledge level is of stellar civilization.

Following this, Lann’s tone carried a hint of surprise.

”Completely natural organ tissue, does this mean... I can study and apply these biological tissues?”

Here, ’application’ does not mean using monster materials on armor and weapons like Hunters in this world do.

Lann has a ’more essential’ method of application—

Integrating it with enhancement surgeries!

In theory, Lann had already witnessed in the [Memory Deep Dive] many Sons of the Emperor, driven by their own biological talents and the pursuit of perfection, tampering with their strengthened organs.

They believed their biological knowledge was sufficient to make alterations to the Emperor’s creations.

Yet, often the best outcome was merely the self-made enhancement organs disrupting the existing balanced and stable reinforcement system, resulting in decreased combat power.

While the worst... would be Sons of the Emperor secretly exterminating those who had altered themselves beyond recognition.

Lann should respectfully follow the surgical procedures personally planned by the Emperor.

He indeed had been doing so all along.

However, undeniably, with his present biological expertise, he could indeed discern that the enhancement surgeries of Interstellar Warriors primarily focus on survival, scalability, and cost control.

In the memories of the Sons of the Emperor, there were numerous Mechanical Cult bigwigs’ bodyguards, or the bigwigs themselves.

Through cost-agnostic enhancement methods, they achieved individual combat power vastly exceeding that of Interstellar Warriors.

Those cost-agnostic enhancement methods could even enable them to annihilate a fully-organized troop of Interstellar Warriors single-handedly.

The enhancements of Interstellar Warriors never pursued the so-called ’strongest’, but rather sought a balance between ’comparatively strong’ and cost-effective universality.

After all, the destiny of Interstellar Warriors always seemed to become part of a grand legion, not a super-hero.

However, at present, Lann isn’t required to join any grand legion.

His life and tasks always pursued personal intensity.

”Moreover, those arrogant Sons of the Emperor, thinking their knowledge sufficient to alter surgical organs, differ from the modifications I currently strive for.”

Lann elaborated on his thoughts in his mind, which would be verified and deduced by the computing power of Mentos, leading to results.

”The monsters in this world, their powerful and robust organs are evolved from the natural world through prolonged survival competition. If merely considering organ stability and reliability, these pure natural organs might be stronger than enhancement organs!”

In the [Memory Deep Dive], Lann knew the core enhancement [Gene Seeds] of Interstellar Warriors would, owing to the passage of time and accidents over millennia, cause various mutations and genetic disorders.

But the species in nature?

Let alone a mere thousand-year span; a species that hasn’t changed even after millions of years against stable environments isn’t unheard of.

Even viable traits in altered environments resemble those of progenitors from tens of millions of years ago.

Biological traits selected by nature exhibit unbelievably high stability.

Lann need not passionately, by sudden inspiration go ’create’ something; he just needs to studiously ’copy’ it quietly.

”I agree with your views, sir.”

At this point, the biochemical intelligence from stellar civilization also presented its own calculation outcome.

”If we can find powerful organs matching the original surgical procedure in function, then we only need to consider the overall system’s operational stability. Without challenging the original surgical procedure’s concepts.”

”Everything remains within the framework of the procedure’s creator, namely the so-called [Emperor]. We’re simply installing numerous additional equipment within the body, akin to the various models of outer armor of Interstellar Warriors in the [Memory Deep Dive].”

”Upon calculation, the feasibility of your approach stands at 89.7%.”

After the biological neural interface produced the calculation result, a trace of an excited smile appeared at the corner of Demon Hunter’s mouth.
