Bear School Astartes

Chapter 357: 357. How long has it been?

The Warlock group in the Magic World hasn’t widely spread the qualities and consciousness of technology.

One of the strongest warlocks in that world—Elf Sage Ada Emin once said a widely circulated quote: My strength comes from possessing knowledge, not sharing it.

Therefore, Lann is not worried that Rita might reverse engineer technology and then spread it out.

That simple and understandable woman would at most fiddle with the firearm with interest for a few days when she first got her hands on it, and then she would return to her luxurious and leisurely life with this weapon that surpasses the era.

Actually, Lann is not worried about the issue of his martial strength being suddenly downgraded a level after firearms are born in the Magic World.

Geralt and Vesemir, old-style demon hunters like them, might face such problems in front of firearms.

But he is different.

Interstellar Warriors were created in the Interstellar Era as Superman Warriors.

The more advanced the combat environment, the greater their lethality will be.

Lann just doesn’t want the races like tree spirits and dwarves to be turned into ’scalp collections’ by the humans of the Magic World.

The young man, after shedding the armor of the Beast Hunter, was preparing to return to the Gascoigne family home.

The blood piled up here was a bit too much, the stench of the beast plague blood could drift far away.

Lann now has a bit of a headache over how to deal with this smell.

Even just staying in Yan’an for such a short time, Lann wouldn’t consider the ’piled-up smell of blood’ to be harmless.

Even normal and natural beasts would instinctively seek out the smell of blood in nature for easy prey.

And in Yan’an, where there is such a frenzy for blood, in this mountain city where the beast plague and blood have some unknown connection... Lann knows without thinking that the blood will certainly attract the beast plague patients.

”Tsk.”

Lann cautiously retreated out of the Fountain Square while clicking his tongue.

He wasn’t fully out yet when he could already hear from across the square, the sound of beast claws scraping the concrete ground, and the noise against the wall bricks coming from the shadows of the alleys.

The beasts of Yan’an have blood sensitivity that is as incredible as the Yan Nan People.

After withdrawing from Fountain Square, Lann simply pulled the lever at the square’s gate.

Letting a solid iron gate close with a creak, isolating Fountain Square from the residential area.

All over Yan’an, there are many such handles commonly used for city defense.

This Victoria-style city, due to the residents’ insecurity, integrated many castle-era defensive devices within the city.

Lann returned to the door of the Gascoigne family, knocking on the door.

”Who? Who is it?”

Viola’s nervous voice immediately sounded. It seems that after he left, she stayed by the door, worried.

Lann answered calmly and steadily.

”It’s me, I’ve dealt with this batch of patients, but the situation gives me some concerns, let’s talk inside.”

He deliberately slowed his speech because he’s worried that Viola might not hear clearly in her tense state.

After confirming the person knocking is indeed Lann, the solid wooden door immediately made the clicking sound of locks turning.

Viola’s sigh of relief and the cheerful chatter of the little girls were vaguely heard.

It appears that the two little girls had been keeping their mother company.

The door opened, and before entering, Lann glanced again towards Fountain Square.

Two patients seriously beastified to the point of moving on all fours have already followed the scent of blood there.

They were currently like stray dogs, licking the foul blood from the ground and wall bricks.

It’s not hard to imagine how frenzied they would become encountering human blood, or even ’higher quality’ blood as defined by the Healing Church.

Lann first patted the heads of the two little girls to give them some sense of safety.

Ovilia and Victoria, although they are always sensible and not crying or making a fuss, Lann doesn’t believe they aren’t scared.

They’re just sensibly holding up when their father is out and their mother is panicking.

As for Viola, an adult, Lann doesn’t spend time offering psychological comfort.

The current situation far exceeds what common sense can summarize, adults have to adapt.

”I’ve said just now, the situation is a bit off, giving me concerns.”

Lann led Viola to the window, pulling the curtain aside slightly, pointing towards Fountain Square.

”The smell of blood has attracted more beasts, although I can still take care of this batch, I have no ability to make them die without bleeding, this is entirely not an easy task... Do typical hunting nights have this situation? Just last night, I followed Henrik and Gascogne casually killing them without issue. This didn’t happen.”

Lann’s description made Viola clutch her Ruby brooch, her throat rolling dryly.

”I-I don’t understand, I’m not a Hunter. But I suspect, could it be... because too many people have gotten sick tonight?”

Viola cautiously guessed.

She tucked her brown hair behind her ear, pressing her lips.

”During usual hunting nights, staff from the Healing Church would promptly clean up the bodies, and beastified patients wouldn’t exceed the hunters’ handling capacity. They would be hunted by patrolling hunters before they were drawn to blood. But tonight...”

But tonight, everything happened too suddenly.

Whether it’s the Healing Church’s emergency announcement of hunting night, or the sudden outbreak of beast plague patients, it’s all too fast, too intense.

Hunters’ hunting activities can effectively control the beast plague when case numbers aren’t serious. But if these cases suddenly explode like a floodgate opening, then what the hunters can do is quite limited.

”Whatever the reason, the situation isn’t good now.”

Lann spoke in a low voice to Viola, not wishing the two children to hear and panic.

”How much incense did Gascogne bring back?”

When Lann asked this, Viola’s expression inexplicably froze for a moment before continuing.

”Five blocks of incense, one is burning now... huh? This one is already more than halfway burned?”

”Why would it burn so fast... oh, it should be Gascogne hurriedly bought low-quality incense this time.”

Is it low quality?

As Lann watched Viola count the incense from behind, he slightly squinted his eyes.

He remembered clearly that Viola told him all Yan’an’s beast-repelling incense came from the Healing Church.

A block is enough to burn for a whole night.

How long has it been since nightfall?

This thought just arose in his mind; Lann again felt the scenery before him blur in a wavy manner, then returning to normal.

It was a fleeting sense of disengagement.

Wait...I can’t seem to grasp how much time has passed!

Lann raised his head, looking upward through the curtain gap.

Above the high and sharp outlines of Yan’an’s buildings, a bright moon was shining in the sky by itself.

The moon phase hasn’t changed at all compared to when night just fell...

Exactly how much time has passed?
