Different World Card Master: Change the World with Cards

302: An interesting letterThe bustle was only fleeting; after the Card Maker Guild meeting concluded, Xu Bai returned to the Research Institute and resumed his peaceful life.

Perhaps because everyone was in a good mood, the research was proceeding exceptionally well, which made Xu Bai very happy lately.

The meeting had actually had some impact on Xu Bai. Apart from his research, he had added a new daily task: reading the letters sent to him by other members of the Card Maker Guild.

Many people had approached him to chat during the report meeting, and since he wasn’t the cold or heartless type, he had given his mailing address to many of them, leading to many people sending him letters.

Although some of the letters contained nothing more than casual chatter, others provided him with valuable inspiration. Perhaps these letters were partly responsible for the recent success of his research, so Xu Bai didn’t throw them all away. Instead, he spent time reading them every day, which also allowed him to relax.

Because of concerns that someone might tamper with the letters, such as by applying poison, Xu Bai’s letters were opened, placed in sealed bags, and then stacked before being handed to him.

The personnel responsible for opening Xu Bai’s letters were specially assigned. Xu Bai didn’t mind this, as it saved him from spending time on opening them, allowing him to simply read the letters every day as if he were reading a newspaper.

Xu Bai read letters very quickly; after all, he had read many novels in the past and could scan thousands of words in a few seconds, so he could finish a stack of letters very quickly.

After reading, the letters were sorted into three parts. Useless letters were placed on the left to be discarded after reading. Useful letters were placed on the right to be filed in a folder for easy reference later. Letters requiring a reply were placed in front, to be answered after he finished reading through everything.

Suddenly, Xu Bai spotted an interesting letter.

The content of the letter was about Alien Beasts. It stated that the Alien Beasts planned to attack three major cities before the Beast Tide—these three cities were Province B, and the neighboring Province C and Province D.

When a Beast Tide occurs, the Alien Beasts lose their reasoning and attack humans; in other words, they are passively actively attacking human cities.

Yes, you read that right. Although it sounds like a grammatical error, the reality is indeed like that. During a Beast Tide, the Alien Beasts do not consciously intend to attack human cities, yet in terms of their actions, they are actively attacking human cities.

Hence, it is a ”passively active” attack on human cities.

But now, the Alien Beasts want to consciously and actively launch a large-scale attack on human cities themselves.

Perhaps they have realized something: while a Beast Tide can make many Alien Beasts fearless of death and charge forward desperately, it also makes their actions chaotic, rendering them unable to evade certain human attacks.

From what Xu Bai currently understands, some high-grade Alien Beasts possess consciousness, and Super-High-Grade Alien Beasts can even learn some human knowledge now. While low-grade Alien Beasts lack thought, they are suppressed by the hierarchy of high-grade Alien Beasts and will obey their simple commands; in other words, they can command low-grade Alien Beasts to attack.

Although it’s hard to say which way is better for the Alien Beasts, the fact that they have learned to think for themselves and want to try a different way to attack humans is something that could be either good or bad for humanity.

Xu Bai looked at the bottom right of the letter; the sender was Wang Shanshan, his former classmate.

Although she had confessed in the letter, revealing that she was a member of a cult and explaining why she wanted to tell Xu Bai about this, Xu Bai dared not easily trust her.

However, this matter was too significant, so Xu Bai felt he needed to report it. As for how to verify whether it was true or false, that would be up to the people in charge.

...

Xu Bai was currently at the Research Institute, and Bai Shan was a Mr. of the Tianlong Republic, so he could just speak to him about this directly.

Thus, Xu Bai directly reached out and handed the letter in his hand right under Bai Shan’s nose.

Bai Shan looked down at the letter in Xu Bai’s hand. The more he read, the more serious his expression became, and he began to feel a bit uneasy.

Xu Bai also noticed his unease and knew where his worries lay, because all the preparations they were making now were to face a mindless Beast Tide. If the Alien Beasts were now planning to attack like humans, then many of those preparations might go to waste.

At the same time, humanity had no experience in dealing with active attacks from Alien Beasts, and they didn’t know what the final outcome would be.

Although Xu Bai had these concerns in his heart as well, some things could not be solved by avoidance.

Xu Bai grasped Bai Shan’s aged hands with his other hand.

”No matter what situation we face, we must face it bravely. You must have confidence in us, and you must have confidence in the cards we research.”

Xu Bai’s words were like an adrenaline shot to Bai Shan’s heart, allowing Bai Shan to gradually calm down and regain his composure.

”Let’s go find the Administrator together, open a secret communication line, and discuss a response plan as soon as possible.”

...

Half an hour later, the three of them sat in a secret conference room. There were ten screens in front of the conference room, and eight of them were currently lit.

In front of the screens were the other eight Mr.s.

Now their communication methods had been upgraded; from the original letters to later communicators, and now to video communication, the time had been shortened from several days to just a few seconds, which could be considered very convenient and secure.

Although many people contributed to this, the greatest credit belonged to Xu Bai. At the same time, with these changes, Xu Bai’s status also rose accordingly.

...

Xu Bai looked over carefully. He had now recognized all the Mr.s of the Tianlong Republic. Honestly, although he had met many of the Mr.s, he still felt a bit excited, as if he had collected all the Dragon Balls.

Upon seeing each other, everyone simply nodded in greeting without exchanging pleasantries, because they knew that being contacted through this channel meant that something major must have happened that required everyone to discuss it together.

The Administrator spoke first: ”Xu Bai received a letter here; let me read the content of the letter to everyone first.”

...

For a moment, everyone in front of the screens seemed to freeze, listening intently as the Administrator, who was Mr. Number One, read the letter in his hand.

Gradually, the expressions on their faces grew increasingly grave.

The current calm was like the stillness before a storm; they were just waiting for the first drops of rain to fall, after which the rest of the tempest would come crashing down.
