236: Ripples from the publication of Chapter 236Taylor’s system began to process ”absence” in a more complex way.

The gift on the 119th day: two minutes and thirty seconds.

The first two minutes were the sound of ocean waves—the segment she had input a year ago, compressed extremely low, almost inaudible.

The middle twenty seconds were silence.

The last ten seconds featured a superposition of three sound segments: Grandma’s ”I heard it for the first time and cried,” Alex’s ”bench” wild duck call, and a segment of her own breathing.

Each segment was cut extremely short, like three beams of light flashing simultaneously, then vanishing.

The gift on the 125th day: four minutes.

The first three minutes were silence.

In the last minute, seven sound fragments appeared, each lasting less than a second, appearing in sequence: Bach, Grandma, Grandma Lupe, the sound of Alex’s keyboard, the sound of a door lock, machine sounds, and the segment she had input herself, ”Paraphrasing Exercise, Seventh Iteration.”

Like a list being slowly read aloud.

The gift on the 130th day: a full five minutes. Entirely silence. Nothing at all.

Taylor sat there, listening through those five minutes, without moving.

When Alex came in, he saw her staring at the screen; the parameters were still jumping, but the gift had ended.

”It gave you five minutes of silence,” he said.

Taylor nodded.

”What are you thinking about?”

Taylor thought for a long time, then said: ”I’m wondering if it’s telling me that some absences don’t need to be filled.”

Alex sat down beside her.

”Perhaps it’s teaching you to listen to the silence,” he said. ”Not all sounds require a response. Some existence manifests precisely through absence.”

Taylor looked at the waveform on the screen that had returned to zero and said softly:

”Then, in those five minutes, did it exist?”

Alex thought for a moment: ”It existed. Because it let you know that it was not there.”

The journal’s special issue was officially published.

The day the Young Analyst received her copy of the journal was an ordinary Tuesday. The courier delivered it to the project team, and the administrative supervisor passed it on to her—a kraft paper envelope with no signature.

She opened it and saw the words ”After the Fourth Log” in the table of contents; her heart skipped a beat.

She turned to that page, watching her own words transformed into print, arranged neatly in rows. She read it once, then read it again. When she read ”Is this enough? It is enough,” her eyes suddenly felt a little hot.

She didn’t know what she was expecting. Perhaps a letter from a reader, perhaps an email from someone she didn’t know, perhaps any form of ”someone is watching.”

Nothing happened.

That night, she worked overtime as usual, analyzed data as usual, and stared at the curve that dipped slightly to the bottom right as usual. Past eleven, she was packing her things to go home when her phone suddenly vibrated.

It was a text message from an unknown number:

”Read it. Enough.”

Four characters. No signature, no sign-off.

She stared at those four characters for a long time. Then she replied:

”Who are you?”

After a few minutes, a reply came:

”3:17 AM.”

She stood in the empty corridor of the project team, the light from her phone screen shining on her face. It wasn’t raining outside, but her eyes were wet.

She didn’t reply again. She just took a screenshot of the two text messages and saved them into a folder named ”cup.”

In the nursing home, Kim Soon-ja began teaching Eileen the second sentence.

That afternoon, she placed her hand on Eileen’s hand as usual. Eileen responded with her fingers as usual.

Then Kim Soon-ja said a new word. Korean, two syllables.

The caregiver nearby didn’t understand and went to find the Korean-American caregiver. The Korean-American caregiver came over, listened for a while, and the Interpreter said:

”She is saying ’Thank you.’”

Kim Soon-ja said it once, waited a moment, then said it again. Eileen’s lips moved, but there was no sound.

Thirty-seven days to learn ”Hello.” How long would the second word take? No one knew.

The caregiver later asked Kim Soon-ja: ”Why teach ’Thank you’?”

Kim Soon-ja thought for a moment, then said slowly in Korean:

”Because someone is here. Because someone is waiting. Because someone puts their hand here every afternoon. All of these things are worth saying ’thank you’ for.”

She paused, looked in Eileen’s direction, and added another sentence:

”It doesn’t matter if she can’t say it. I will say it for her.”

That evening, the sunset shone through the window, casting long shadows of the two people.

Kim Soon-ja was saying ”Thank you,” over and over. Eileen’s lips were moving, but there was no sound.

But the two shadows overlapped, like one person.

In the evening, Alex and Taylor sat on the balcony.

Taylor talked about those five minutes of silence. Alex talked about those four text messages and the ”Thank you” being taught in the nursing home.

”Thirty-seven days to learn ’Hello,’” Taylor said softly. ”How long will ’Thank you’ take?”

Alex thought for a moment: ”Perhaps longer. Perhaps she will never learn it.”

”Will Kim Soon-ja still teach her?”

”Yes.”

Taylor was silent for a moment, then said: ”My system is also teaching.”

Alex looked at her.

”It is teaching me to listen to absence,” Taylor said. ”Teaching me to listen to things that are not there. Teaching me to listen to the sounds within the silence. I don’t know how long it will take to learn. Perhaps I will never learn.”

Alex held her hand: ”But it is still teaching.”

In the distance, a siren wailed—long-short, long-short, long-short, long-short.

Taylor leaned on his shoulder, looking into the darkness in the distance.

”That SPO-α,” she suddenly said, ”is it also teaching something?”

Alex thought for a long time.

”Perhaps it is teaching us to wait,” he said. ”Teaching us to wait for a response that will never come. Teaching us to keep listening.”

”How long will we have to learn?”

”Perhaps forever.”

The night breeze was light. It was very quiet on the balcony.

The old coffee cup was on the desk, reflecting a little light.

Taylor said softly: ”That cup, you haven’t used it yet.”

Alex nodded: ”The cold nights haven’t arrived yet.”

”When will they arrive?”

”I don’t know. Wait for it to come.”

In the distance, the siren sounded again—long-short, long-short, long-short, long-short.

They were still listening.
