222: Chapter 222 The Postman a Century LaterTaylor almost forgot about that 0.0001 Hz adjustment herself.

After lowering the system’s global keynote frequency, she didn’t deliberately pay attention to it anymore. The Parameter Flow continued to run day after day, the system evolved through various presets and randomness, generating countless new sound combinations. That infinitesimal frequency shift was submerged in thousands of adjustable parameters, like a drop of water falling into the ocean.

Until the eleventh day.

That day, she was organizing all the operation logs automatically saved by the system over the past two weeks, preparing to filter some interesting ”gift combinations” into the library. Following her habit, she randomly selected a few complete ninety-minute recordings for blind review.

When the third recording reached the fifty-second minute, she suddenly pressed the pause button.

”Alex, come here for a second.”

Alex came over from the study and saw her frowning, repeatedly playing the same short segment—it was a gift after a window of silence. The material consisted of the first three notes of the theme from Bach’s ”Goldberg Variations,” embedded by the system at an extremely low volume with an extremely long reverb tail at the edge of the background field, almost like the memory of a memory.

”Do you hear anything different?” Taylor asked.

Alex closed his eyes and listened carefully. He had heard Bach’s theme appear in this system over a hundred times, but this time...

”It seems... a bit heavier.” He wasn’t sure. ”It’s not that the pitch is lower, it’s the texture, like...” He searched for a suitable metaphor. ”Like the same bell, turned from bronze to iron. Darker, older.”

Taylor stared at him for a few seconds, then called up the system parameter history, pulling up the adjustment made before the eleventh day.

Global keynote frequency: -0.0001 Hz.

She gasped, then slowly exhaled.

”Eleven days, running two to three times a day, the system has cumulatively executed this ’darker’ keynote for thousands of hours. It started... getting used to this background color. It wasn’t passively accepting it; it was actively using it as a benchmark to recalibrate all its parameter associations. That 0.0001 Hz didn’t make any note lower, but it shifted the ’temperament’ of the entire system towards the dark side by a fraction of a percent. You heard it yourself.”

Alex understood what she was surprised about.

This wasn’t a preset effect. Taylor just lowered a value, and the system finished the rest of the work itself—in eleven days of self-evolution, it slowly ”adapted” to this new benchmark and, using it as an origin, reorganized its interaction with all other parameters. That imperceptible adjustment was like a stone dropped into a pond; the ripples had already spread to every corner of the pond, changing the way every drop of water met other water droplets.

”It’s not passively responding to your instructions,” Alex said. ”It’s collaborating with you. You provide a direction, and it walks the rest of the way.”

Taylor didn’t speak, just marked the recording at the fifty-second minute as a ”seed” and saved it to the candidate material library for ”delayed light.”

She suddenly realized that this system was no longer her ”tool.”

It was her conversationalist.

The story of the Korean-American Grandmother going to the elementary school to hold listening workshops slowly spread through the community.

At first, it was just sporadic reposts in parent groups. Then, a reporter from the community section of a local tabloid wrote a short feature titled ”The Person Who Teaches Children to Listen.” Then came invitations from two other nearby elementary schools.

The project team didn’t ”projectize” this matter. They didn’t formulate promotion plans, didn’t design standardized courseware, and didn’t even proactively contact any media. They just accompanied the Korean-American Grandmother to the schools she wanted to visit, helped her debug equipment, and acted as an Interpreter for her slow, occasionally pause-filled sentences that required recall.

The Korean-American Grandmother brought that notebook to every workshop. Some children asked, ”Grandma, you’ve been recording for forty years, do you still use listening to distinguish between fire trucks and ambulances?”

She thought for a moment and said: ”I don’t need to now. Now, as soon as I hear it, I know whose voice it is. But I’m still recording.”

She opened to the newest page of the notebook, which had the date and a line of Korean written neatly on it, translated as:

April 17, 2024, Class 2, Grade 3. A boy said he likes listening to Grandma speak Korean on the phone; it sounds like rain.

The boy was sitting in the third row. After hearing the translation, he buried his entire face into his arms. His desk mate patted his back hard and whispered, ”It’s you, it’s you.”

The Korean-American Grandmother looked at them, not smiling, just watching them for a long, quiet moment.

The project team’s sound engineer recorded this segment. But he didn’t put it into any public archives.

He just felt that some sounds didn’t need to be saved; they only needed to have happened.

Team K’s ”Thirty-Year Long-Term Monitoring Plan” passed internal review and was officially launched.

Alex read this document for an entire afternoon. It wasn’t the kind of exciting ”contact plan” that would appear in science fiction movies. There was no launch, no response, no grand declarations of first contact.

It was just an extremely simple, extremely long duty roster.

For the next thirty years, seven global cooperative institutions, seventeen radio telescope facilities, and a cumulative total of over forty thousand hours of aimed observation. Annual budgets, personnel rotation, equipment maintenance, data archiving standards. A periodic review every five years to decide whether to continue for the next five years.

There was a page in the document appendix called ”Personnel Inheritance Memorandum,” written particularly blandly:

”The expected observation cycle of this project is significantly longer than the conventional career of a single researcher. It is recommended to establish a master-apprentice knowledge inheritance system. Core observation parameters, calibration processes, and anomaly recognition experience must be retained in the form of both standardized documents and oral interviews. It is recommended to produce a ’Project Knowledge and Memory Archive’ every ten years for subsequent rotating personnel to consult.”

When Alex saw ”oral interviews” and ”memory archive,” he suddenly thought of the Korean-American Grandmother’s notebook that she had been recording for forty years.

Science and life, in some deep place, turned out to be the same thing.

He took a screenshot of that passage in the memorandum and sent it to Marcus, adding a sentence: ”The long-term archive approach for the community soundscape project can refer to this.”

Marcus replied quickly: ”Received. I’ll go find the project team for a meeting. By the way, shouldn’t we also make a ’Thirty-Year Plan’?”

Alex looked at the screen, not replying immediately.

Thirty years. At that time, he would be forty-nine. Taylor would be forty-eight. If the Korean-American Grandmother was still around, she would be over a hundred. The frequency of SPO-α would be about 0.001 Hz lower than it is now, still a shift imperceptible to the vast majority of instruments.

He typed:

”Let’s do five years first. We’ll see after five years.”

Send.

Then he put down his phone and went to the studio to find Taylor.

She was staring blankly at the slightly downward-sloping frequency drift fitting line on the screen—that was the SPO-α eight-year data chart he had shared with her earlier.

”I’m thinking,” Taylor didn’t turn around, ”if someone takes over this project in a hundred years and sees this line we’ve recorded now, what would they feel?”

Alex stood behind her, looking at the almost horizontal thin line.

”They will know that a hundred years ago, a group of people spent many nights confirming that this signal was aging on a scale of ten thousand years. They will know this is the first coordinate we left for them.”

Taylor nodded.

”Just like the Korean-American Grandmother’s notebook,” she said. ”She wrote ’September 12, 1978, first time I heard it, cried.’ If someone reads that notebook in a hundred years, they won’t know which street corner she was standing on that day, what color clothes she was wearing, or which direction the fire truck was driving. But they will know that a human being, at that moment, understood a city.”

She paused and saved the fitting line into a folder named by year.

”That is enough.”

---

Late at night, Alex stood alone in front of the study window.

He thought of the phrase ”like rain” in the Korean-American Grandmother’s notebook. He thought of Taylor’s 0.0001 Hz tribute that no one else could hear. He thought of the bland sentence in Team K’s memorandum: ”It is recommended to establish a master-apprentice knowledge inheritance system.”

He strung these things together and suddenly realized one thing:

The ”weaving” he had been searching for was never about weaving scattered information into a complete picture.

True weaving is one thread connecting another thread, one person connecting another person, one era connecting the next era. The thread will never break, but the picture will never have a day of completion.

The Korean-American Grandmother passed the notebook to the project team, the project team passed the method to the elementary school students; he didn’t know what kind of listeners these students would become when they grew up.

Taylor lowered the system by 0.0001 Hz, and the system transformed itself into a darker background color in eleven days; she didn’t know how many performances and how many listeners’ nights this background color would affect in the future.

Team K formulated a thirty-year plan, wrote down observation experience into documents, and recorded it into oral interviews; the young people who take over the project in thirty years will read their records from today on some late night—they didn’t know if that person would choose to continue for the next thirty years because of this slightly downward-sloping curve.

This is the weaver’s work.

Not to finish weaving a piece of cloth.

It is to hand the thread end to the next pair of hands, believing that they will continue.

He turned off the study light and walked to the bedroom.

Taylor was already asleep, a small nightlight on by the bedside. Her phone screen was still lit, lingering on a photo just sent by the community soundscape project team—a group photo of the Korean-American Grandmother and the children of Class 2, Grade 3. She was sitting in the middle of the first row, the notebook spread open on her lap, surrounded by faces crowding in, making peace signs and grinning with toothless smiles.

Alex gently turned off the screen for her and placed the phone on the nightstand.

Outside the window, the city was still emitting its noisy, rich, and never-repeating sounds.

The sirens of fire trucks and ambulances occasionally streaked across the night sky, long-short-long-short, long-short-long-short.
