224: Chapter 224 Anonymous LetterTaylor didn’t try to replicate those ”unexpected gifts.”

She simply let the system continue running, adding new material—snippets from the children’s ”Sound Diaries,” new neighborhood sounds recorded by the Korean-American Grandmother, fragmented melodies she hummed herself, and even a faint sound of Alex tapping his keyboard late at night recorded from his study. She threw them into the Gift Library, letting the system decide for itself when and how to use them.

Then she observed.

After seven ”System Dreams,” the eighth appeared three days later in the afternoon. It was a moment of bright sunlight. Forty-four minutes into the system’s operation, in the gift slot following a window of silence, a snippet emerged. It was a mix of a subway announcement from the children’s ”Sound Diaries,” a Korean phrase from the grandmother, and the tail end of one of her own coughs. The subway announcement was stretched into a background, the Korean phrase floated above it, and the cough’s trailing sound acted like a small pause, giving the entire fragment an inexplicable, everyday solemnity.

The ninth appeared late that same night, composed of a fragment of Grandma Lupe’s folk song and electronic noise Taylor had accidentally triggered during debugging. The former was processed to sound as if coming from far away, while the latter felt like a breath close to the ear. They didn’t blend, but their juxtaposition created a strange sense of dialogue, as if one were asking and the other were hesitating to answer.

Taylor began to do something: whenever the system generated a new ”unexpected gift,” she would note the system’s parameter states in her notebook—the positions of the background field’s brightness, density, and complexity curves, the length of the window of silence, which window the gift appeared in, and what the material of the previous gift had been.

She wasn’t trying to replicate them. She was learning.

Learning how this system she had personally nurtured was more likely to ”dream” under certain states. Learning how those seemingly unrelated parameters collectively formed a moment where different materials could ”find a common frequency.” Learning how the rules she had set herself could give birth to something that transcended those rules.

A week later, she closed her notebook and said to Alex, ”I think I understand a little bit now.”

”Understand what?”

”It’s not random.” Taylor looked at the Parameter Flow running on the screen, her voice very soft. ”It’s more likely to produce these fusions under certain specific ’emotional states.’ It’s not that it actually has emotions, but those combinations of parameters—background brightness dropping below a certain threshold, complexity climbing into a specific range, the window length being just a tiny bit longer than the last—all of these together constitute a state similar to ’receptivity.’ In this state, it isn’t so eager to output something, but is more willing to let different sounds stay together and listen to them speak for themselves.”

Alex understood: ”Like a person who is too busy and can only deal with the outside world. Only when they quiet down can they hear what the different voices in their heart are saying.”

”Yes.” Taylor nodded. ”I used to think ’gifts’ were something it actively gave. Now I feel that those ’unexpected gifts’ are actually the echoes naturally produced when it allows different sounds to meet and converse within itself. I’m just providing the place and time for them to meet.”

She paused, looking at the slowly flowing parameter curves on the screen.

”I am not the creator. I am the guardian of this place.”

The ”sound diary” spread from the third-grade boy’s class to his family.

It happened very naturally. The boy would go home every day and continue recording his ”sounds of the way to school,” but there was only one recording device, so his younger sister couldn’t use it while he was. After the siblings fought over it a few times, their mother got annoyed and said, ”Stop fighting. My phone has a recording function too. I’ll give you each a folder, and you can record your own.”

A week later, the mother found herself recording as well.

The first time was accidental. She was cooking in the kitchen, the oil pan was sizzling, and she suddenly thought: if this sound were recorded in her son’s ”diary,” how would he describe it? She pulled out her phone and recorded thirty seconds, then played it for the whole family during dinner that evening.

After listening, her son said seriously, ”Mom, this sound is very busy.”

The mother was stunned for a moment, then laughed. For the first time, she realized that after cooking for over a decade, she had never heard the sound of the oil pan as being ”busy.”

From then on, she began to pay attention to other sounds in the kitchen: the rhythm of the knife hitting the cutting board, the sound of water splashing when the faucet was opened too wide, the faint ”click-click” seconds before the oven timer went off. She didn’t record every day like her son, but occasionally she would record a short snippet and save it in that folder. She didn’t listen to them a second time; she just kept them.

The father discovered this late one night while working overtime. He came home, the family was asleep, but the kitchen light was still on. As he reached to turn it off, he caught a glimpse of the mother’s phone on the dining table. The screen was lit, staying on the recording folder interface. Driven by some impulse, he put on headphones and clicked on the most recent recording.

It was the sound of his son practicing piano in the evening—intermittent, full of mistakes, a scale repeated a dozen times before barely managing to get it right. It was recorded for about three minutes, and the last few seconds were his mother’s voice: ”That’s enough, time to eat.”

The father sat in the dark kitchen and listened to the entire three-plus minutes. He remembered that every time he came back from overtime, his son was already asleep. He hadn’t heard his son practice the piano in a long time—or rather, he hadn’t heard his son in a long time.

At dinner the next day, the father pulled out his own phone and said, ”I want a folder too.”

A month later, the Community Soundscape Project Team received a message from that mother:

”I don’t know if this counts as a result of your project. But our family now has an extra segment after dinner called ’What did you hear today?’ Everyone takes turns playing the shortest snippet they recorded. No explanation needed, just play it. Sometimes it’s three seconds, sometimes ten. After it plays, someone might laugh, or no one might speak. But we all listen.”

The project team forwarded this message to the Korean-American Grandmother. After listening to the translation, she nodded and said one thing:

”That is how a house becomes a ’we.’”

Team K’s ”Human Observation Log” received its first official submission.

The contributor was anonymous, only noting that they were one of the members who had participated in the core data analysis. The log wasn’t long and used plain language, like a routine work record, but after reading it, several people in the project team remained silent for a long time.

The log excerpt follows:

”Today it was confirmed that the 0.0003 Hz drift is not an error.”

”At 3:17 AM, it was raining outside. The data analyst called us all to his screen to look at that fitting line. We stood and watched for a long time; no one spoke. The coffee was brewed and sat there getting cold; no one drank it.”

”I was thinking about one thing then: if this signal is truly aging in units of ten thousand years, then how long has it been running like this? Tens of thousands of years? Hundreds of thousands? How many births and deaths of stars has it witnessed? Has it perhaps also witnessed some bipedal creature on this blue planet go from looking up at the starry sky for the first time to building an instrument that can hear it for the first time?”

”It wouldn’t know. It’s just a beacon, broadcasting according to its program, aging according to its program.”

”But we know. We, a group of creatures with lifespans of less than a hundred years, huddling in front of a screen at three in the morning, have identified the moment belonging to ’change’ within its long, near-eternal decay. That moment is our entire life.”

”I don’t know how to describe this feeling. It’s not excitement, not fear, not sadness. It’s a very strange peace, like confirming that a neighbor is indeed slowly getting old. You don’t get worked up because of it; you just think, so he is the same as us. So we are all the same.”

”It’s still raining outside. The coffee is still cold.”

”I think the person who opens this letter one hundred and twenty-five years from now, if they have also faced this curve at three in the morning, should be able to recognize this feeling.”

There was no signature at the end of the log, only a date and an addendum:

”P.S. I was the one who brewed the coffee that day. Cold coffee was the best cup I’ve ever had in my life.”

The project leader sealed this log into the folder marked ’To be opened in 2150.’ He didn’t try to track down who wrote it. The anonymity itself was part of the letter.

Late at night, Alex was in his study, repeatedly reading the screenshot of that anonymous log.

Taylor came over from the studio, saw him staring blankly at the screen, and leaned in to take a look.

”It’s really well written,” she said softly.

Alex nodded.

”Have you ever thought,” Taylor sat down beside him, ”that one hundred and twenty-five years from now, the person who opens that folder might also be like us, reading these words late at night and thinking, ’So they were just like us.’”

Alex looked at the words on the screen: ”’3:17 AM, it was raining outside... Cold coffee was the best cup I’ve ever had in my life.’”

”Maybe that person will also think,” Taylor continued, ”’So the people of that era, just like us, would fall silent before a curve at three in the morning, would remember the taste of cold coffee, and wouldn’t know how to describe that feeling, only able to use ordinary words like ”peace.”’”

Alex turned to look at her: ”Do you think they can understand? The people one hundred and twenty-five years from now, reading this?”

Taylor thought for a moment and pointed out the window: ”Listen.”

The night breeze was light, with the faint sound of traffic in the distance, occasionally interspersed with a siren that was hard to distinguish between a fire truck or an ambulance—long-short long-short, long-short long-short.

”This sound,” Taylor said, ”the Korean-American Grandmother heard it forty years ago for the first time and cried. Now that third-grade boy hears it every day on his way to school; he might record it and put it in his ’sound diary.’ One hundred and twenty-five years from now, if there are still people living in this city, they will still hear this sound—long-short long-short, long-short long-short. They won’t know who the grandmother was, they won’t know who that boy was, they won’t know who we were.”

She paused.

”But they will know that we heard this sound. What they hear and what we heard is the same thing.”

Alex was silent for a long time.

Then he reached out and took her hand.

Outside the window, that siren—indistinguishable between a fire truck or an ambulance—sounded once more: long-short long-short, long-short long-short.

Exactly the same as forty years ago.

And likely the same as one hundred and twenty-five years from now.
