212: Chapter 212 The First Line of Poem Written for the StarsOver the next few days, Alex and Taylor’s lives were occupied by a huge, sweet puzzle: how to create a few-minute ”poem” for the starry sky?

They sat on the study’s carpet, surrounded by scattered notebooks, tablets, and abstract waveforms Taylor had sketched out.

The discussion began with the most fundamental question: what exactly did this ”poem” want to say?

”It cannot be a resume listing what technologies we have,” Taylor said, poking the notebook with her pen tip. ”Nor can it be a distress signal that makes us look desperate. It should be a sharing of... a state of existence. It’s like someone standing on a mountain peak, not because they need anything, but just wanting to feel the wind and let the wind know they are there.”

”A declaration of ’this is how we exist’,” Alex nodded. ”It needs to contain our rationality and sensibility, our order and chaos, our observation of the world, and our inner creativity.”

Taylor’s eyes lit up: ”Rationality and sensibility... order and chaos... that makes me think of Bach. His music has the most rigorous mathematical structure, perfect like a crystal, yet what flows out is the deepest emotion. How about using Bach’s music as the skeleton of ’order’? For example, the theme of the ’Goldberg Variations’, that simple yet infinitely changing fundamental bass line, is itself a mathematically perfect statement.”

”Good idea,” Alex mused. ”But human order alone is not enough. We are also part of nature. We need to add the ’sounds’ of the Earth itself: a segment of raw, unprocessed ocean waves, wind, or... birdsong? But we must choose something with universal aesthetic appeal, like the song of a nightingale, which in many cultures is connected to poetry and the distant horizon.”

”Bach’s ordered bass line, paired with the pure sounds of Earth’s nature...” Taylor pieced it together in her mind. ”This is a strong metaphor in itself: human rational construction built upon the foundation of natural life. But it’s still not enough... we also have science, our understanding of the universe.”

Alex pulled up the data on the tablet: ”We can encode some of the most fundamental universal constants. Like the speed of light, Planck’s constant, the circle ratio π. Using their corresponding frequencies or rhythms, we can weave them into the sound background in a minimalist way. It doesn’t need to be audible, but it is the ’digital signature’ of our cognitive framework.”

”And what about art?” Taylor pressed. ”Besides Bach, what is our latest creative expression that belongs to this era? We can’t just cite the ancients.”

Alex looked at her: ”Your ’Resonance Chamber’ work. The concept of ’shaping’ sound using virtual space is itself a cutting-edge, brand-new language that fuses technology and art. Perhaps we can create a unique ’Universal Resonance Chamber’ model specifically for this ’information package’, using it to process and fuse Bach, birdsong, constant encoding... letting all these elements blend and morph in this symbolic ’chamber’ to form the final sound. This itself is the embodiment of our current creative state.”

Taylor was struck by this idea and couldn’t speak for a long time. It was too perfect. Using the brand-new artistic language she was exploring as the representative of humanity’s latest creativity to weave a poem for the starry sky. She felt an unprecedented sense of mission and creative passion surging in her chest.

”We might need months, or even longer, to polish these few minutes,” Alex reminded her. ”The selection, proportion, encoding method of every element, and the final ’chamber’ design all need careful consideration. This isn’t like writing a song; it doesn’t allow for any sloppiness.”

”I understand.” Taylor took a deep breath, her eyes infinitely firm. ”This might be the most important ’work’ of our lives. I am willing to spend all the necessary time.”

They gave this unformed sound poem a temporary codename: ”the wind on the mountain peak”.

Meanwhile, good news came from the ”sound coordination” experiment in the Seattle community garden.

With the one-month test period halfway through, the community committee organized a simple feedback collection. The results were encouraging.

The elderly and parents using the rest area generally indicated that during the ”selective focus” periods, the environment indeed felt more ”peaceful”. Laila’s music felt more like scenery in the distant background, no longer interfering with conversation or reading. Some even said they could now occasionally notice birdsong and the rustling of wind through leaves that they had previously ignored.

Laila fed back that her performance experience was not negatively affected; on the contrary, knowing her music was integrating into the community in a more considerate way made her feel a more special connection with the audience. She even tried creating a few more soothing, ambient-fused improvisational segments, which received smiles and greetings from quite a few passing residents.

The committee decided to turn this scheme (filter + minor physical adjustments) into a long-term setting and planned to share this little story of ”promoting harmony in shared spaces through technology” in the community newsletter. Marcus’s team was invited to compile this process into a case study and include it in the ”Sensory Empathy Design” toolkit’s example library.

”Look, this is the first little flower bloomed by the Theia Project in the soil of reality,” Marcus could hardly hide his pride during the report. ”Although small, it has solidly changed the daily experience of dozens of people. Moreover, it proves that our philosophy is actionable.”

Alex was very happy. This tiny success was like a warm shot of adrenaline, making him feel that those grand thoughts about information, the Interpreter, and empathy were not just castles in the air. They could, in a corner of a community garden, genuinely make life a little better. This feeling was very solid.

Taylor’s personal creation also gained new inspiration from the conception of ”the wind on the mountain peak”. She began trying to apply the concept of the ”Universal Resonance Chamber” to the subsequent movements of ”delayed light”.

For ”Third Movement: The Emergence and Loss of Meaning”, she designed an extremely unstable virtual chamber with constantly fluctuating boundaries. When the musical phrase representing ”decoding attempts” (the result of the second movement) entered this chamber, the sound would be randomly amplified, distorted, cut, or superimposed, simulating the difficult formation and instantaneous collapse of ”understanding”. Some accidentally formed ”moments of meaning” (brief and brilliant harmonies) would produce bright resonance in the chamber, but would soon be drowned out, stretched, and dissipated by the ensuing ”loss” and ”noise”.

This sound narrative based on physical models was more persuasive than her previous reliance purely on instruments and composition techniques, and also possessed a more depersonalized, almost cruel, objective poetry. She would stay in the studio for half a day at a time, completely immersed in the joy of ”doing experiments” with sound, often forgetting the time.

Alex began to systematically organize and prepare the ”raw materials” needed for ”the wind on the mountain peak”. He relearned basic knowledge of universal constant encoding, contacted algorithm experts at the ”Flashpoint” laboratory, and discussed how to transform mathematical concepts into minimalist acoustic elements that could be seamlessly woven into the musical background. He also began widely listening to and selecting recording samples that might represent ”Earth’s natural sounds”, looking for those segments with the most universal aesthetic appeal and the least cultural bias.

This was a massive, interdisciplinary preparation task. He realized that his role as an ”Interpreter” was elevated to an unprecedented height in this project: he needed to understand science, art, and philosophy, and ”translate” them into a unified sound structure with multi-layered meanings.

One evening, the two were walking home, holding recently bought coffee. The night sky over Los Angeles was rarely clear, and a few stars could be seen.

Taylor suddenly stopped, looked up, and said softly: ”Sometimes I feel... that what the two of us are doing now seems to be connected by an invisible thread. I am writing about the difficulty of ’understanding’ for listeners on Earth, and at the same time, preparing a gift about ’how we try to understand’ for possible ’listeners’ beyond the starry sky. Your ’Theia Project’, Team K’s research, my music... it all seems to be heading in the same direction, saying similar things in different ways.”

Alex squeezed her hand, looking at the same starry sky: ”Perhaps that thread is ’connection’ itself. Connecting different knowledge, connecting different people, connecting different worlds, and even connecting different times. Everything we do is essentially learning how to ’connect’ better, and letting these connections create meaning, or at least, create beauty.”

Taylor leaned on his shoulder, feeling the coolness of the night wind and the warmth from his palm. ”Regardless of whether there are ’ears’ on the other side of the starry sky, at least this process has already connected us more deeply.” She paused, then said with a smile, ”And, being able to do something so cool and so silly with you, it feels great.”

Alex also smiled and took a sip of coffee. Yes, regardless of whether ”the wind on the mountain peak” could eventually be ”heard” by anyone, the process of creating it had already endowed their ordinary lives with an extraordinary depth and radiance.

They continued walking towards home, their figures blending into the warm streetlights. Overhead, the stars blinked silently, like countless silent listeners, or merely distant points of light.

But at this moment, on Earth, two souls were beginning to earnestly, full of awe and love, compose the first line of poetry for them.
