From American Internet Celebrity to God Among Men

225: Chapter 225 The Map of ListeningTaylor spent two full weeks creating an ”archival version” of delayed light.

This was not the ever-changing, ever-evolving system itself that she had originally envisioned. Instead, it was a carefully selected ”snapshot” representing the system’s current state—a ninety-minute recording composed of the most representative segments generated by the system over the past six months. It was not a live recording of a single run, but a collection of moments ”chosen” by the system itself from countless runs: those ”unexpected gifts,” those passages where parameter states happened to reach a certain perfect balance, those ”dreams” that appeared only once and that Taylor herself could not replicate.

She listened to the edited version three times from beginning to end, confirming there were no traces of human intervention—she hadn’t adjusted any parameters or changed any sequences; she was simply like an archivist, binding the ”diaries” written by the system itself into a chronological volume.

”It doesn’t represent it,” she said to Alex, ”it’s just what it said at this stage. If someone hears this ten years from now and thinks this is delayed light, they would be wrong. But at least they’ll know that this system once existed in this era, in this way.”

Alex understood what she meant. This wasn’t the work; it was the shadow of the work. But shadows, sometimes, last longer than the entities themselves.

The archival version was stored on the permanent servers of the Flashpoint lab, alongside the core documents of the Theia Project. Taylor didn’t set any access restrictions, only adding a line of explanation:

”This is a partial trace of a work that is always changing, from 2024 to 2025. It is still running now. If you want to hear what it is saying at this moment, you can come here. The address remains the same.”

On the evening she finished the archive, Taylor returned to the studio and sat in front of the monitors, quietly watching the pulsing parameter curves on the screen. The system was still running, still evolving, still generating new ”dreams” at moments she couldn’t predict.

She didn’t turn it off. She just watched for a while.

Then she opened her notebook and wrote a new title:

delayed light Vol. 2: Voyage of Echoes

”What’s this?” Alex stood at the door, though she hadn’t noticed when he arrived.

Taylor didn’t look back: ”Ideas for the next stage. Volume One was about ’Receiving and Guessing’; for Volume Two, I want to try ’Responding and Seeking’—not actually responding to that signal, but using music to imagine what a system would do if it received a sound it couldn’t understand.”

Alex walked in and stood behind her to look at those few lines of text.

”How will it respond?”

”I don’t know,” Taylor said honestly, ”but it will keep listening. Maybe that is the response.”

The Community Soundscape Project received an unexpected invitation for collaboration from the Los Angeles Public Library System.

The other party wanted to create a city-wide ”Listening Map” interactive exhibition—embedding a map of Los Angeles on the library’s homepage where users could click on any area to hear representative sound clips collected by the ”sound diary” project team over the past year, along with short descriptions written by the recorders. Each point on the map corresponded to a real person and a real sound memory.

The project team was somewhat hesitant: many of these sounds and descriptions carried strong personal emotions and even included private memories that people might not want to make public. They weren’t sure if it was appropriate to put these things on a public map.

They went to ask the Korean-American Grandmother.

The grandmother was already eighty-five years old, and her hearing had declined significantly, requiring a hearing aid and loud speech to communicate. But after she heard the Interpreter, she hardly hesitated: ”Put it up.”

The Interpreter said, ”Some people are unwilling to make their recordings public; we won’t include those.”

The grandmother shook her head: ”I mean, put it up. Let everyone listen. Not everyone will click on it, but those who do will know that this city isn’t just tall buildings and highways; it also has these sounds. They are breathing, too.”

The project team asked again, ”Then, should we also put your notebook up there?”

The grandmother thought for a moment and said, ”Not the notebook. It’s too old to withstand so many fingers flipping through it. But you can put the few lines I read up there—the one that says ’The first time I heard it, I cried.’ Let the people who click on the map hear how an eighty-five-year-old woman learned to listen to this city back then.”

After a pause, she added: ”Put the new recording I made this year up there too—the one that says ’I can’t hear it very clearly now, but I still remember.’”

On the day the ”Listening Map” project launched, there was no ribbon-cutting and no speeches. The library simply placed a simple graphic on the website’s homepage: dozens of light points were scattered sparsely across the terrain outline of Los Angeles. Beside it was a line of small text:

”Click on any light point, and you will hear a sound that someone wants you to hear at this moment.”

The first person to click on it was that third-grade boy—who had now entered the fourth grade. He clicked on the recording he had made of ”the ice cream truck parked on the street corner, the uncle opening the freezer to rummage through the popsicles,” and after listening, he sent a voice message to his mother:

”Mom, listen. This is what I recorded before.”

His mother was in the kitchen cooking. She clicked the link, heard her son’s voice from two years ago, and stood frozen in front of the frying pan for a long time.

The pan was sizzling. She hadn’t recorded it.

But that night at dinner, she said to the whole family, ”I want to start recording.”

No one asked why. The father just nodded and handed over his phone: ”Use mine, your memory is full.”

The younger sister raised her hand nearby: ”I want to keep recording too. Since brother isn’t recording anymore, I’ll record until high school.”

The brother glanced at his sister, said nothing, but the corners of his mouth curved up slightly.

When Team K’s ”Thirty-Year Plan” reached the end of its fifth year, a routine review meeting was held.

The results were the same as always: no new anomalies were discovered. SPO-α continued its eternal, unchanging rhythmic broadcast, the window periods continued to open and close with precision, and the frequency drift line, which slanted slightly downward to the right, had dipped another 0.0002 Hz.

At the end of the meeting, the project leader announced a decision: to extend the plan to fifty years.

”Fifty years from now, the slope of this fitting line will drop a little more. Maybe we still won’t find anything. But perhaps the technology fifty years from now can capture things we can’t capture today. Perhaps humans fifty years from now will have a different understanding of ’listening’ than we do. We can’t make decisions for them; we can only ensure that when they want to keep listening, there is something to hear.”

No one objected.

The retired first director did not attend the review meeting but sent an email with only one sentence:

”Remember to let me know in fifty years, if I’m still alive.”

The new director replied, ”I will call you when you are one hundred and three years old.”

The anonymous log folder marked ”Open in 2150” received its third submission this year.

Still anonymous. Still very short.

”It rained again today. I don’t know how many times I’ve written this on a rainy day.”

”That line has slanted down a bit more. I stared at the screen for a long time and suddenly remembered what the first director said on the day he retired: this action itself is the meaning.”

”I think I’m starting to understand. But it took me five years. I wonder how long it will take for the next person who understands this.”

”I hope they write it down. I want to see it.”

On an ordinary weekend morning, Alex realized he hadn’t logged into the system backend for a long time.

He clicked in to take a look: cumulative popularity 278,500,000 points, available popularity 126,800,000 points. The numbers were still growing slowly, coming from the platform’s daily operations, the impact of community projects, and the occasional attention brought by media reports.

He didn’t redeem anything. He just watched for a while.

Then he noticed an inconspicuous link in the backend he had never seen before, labeled ”Theia Project · Community Soundscape Archive · Real-time Listening Map.”

He clicked in and saw dozens of light points scattered across the terrain map of Los Angeles. He clicked on one at random—it was a very short recording, only three seconds long, with a woman whispering: ”This is the sound of my front door lock being turned from the inside. Every day after school when I turn it, I know someone is home.”

He clicked on another—it was the sound of a sizzling frying pan, with the text: ”Mom is cooking. She does it every day. I’ve never listened to it before.”

He closed the page and walked to the window.

Taylor was in the kitchen making breakfast; the sound of eggs frying sizzled, mixed with the gurgling bubbles of the coffee machine. From outside the window, the occasional sound of a neighbor’s footsteps walking a dog and barks drifted in.

He watched for a while, but didn’t walk over.

He just stood there, listening to those sounds.

---

In the afternoon, they went to that community park again.

Fine ripples were blown across the surface of the small lake by the wind, and a few wild ducks swam in the water, occasionally dipping their heads in to find food. Someone was sitting on a bench reading, and people walking dogs passed by them; a dog barked twice at the ducks in the lake, and its owner scolded it softly.

They walked to the bench they had sat on during their first walk and found that the paint on the backrest had peeled off a bit more, but the bench was still there.

After sitting down, Taylor suddenly said, ”When I was listening to the system yesterday, it generated a new ’dream.’”

”What materials did it use?”

”The sound of you typing on a keyboard in my studio that time. And the grandmother’s line, ’The first time I heard it, I cried.’ And... a recording of my own breathing. And the sound of the door lock that girl recorded.”

”Does it sound good?”

Taylor thought for a moment: ”It’s not about sounding good. It’s... different. It’s starting to speak in a new way.”

Alex looked at the lake: ”Like what?”

”Like...” Taylor weighed her words for a long time, ”like someone who has listened for a long time and is starting to try and retell what they heard. It’s not imitation; it’s a relaying. In their own way.”

Alex nodded and didn’t ask further.

The sun slowly set, and the sounds of the city’s evening rush hour slowly rose—the hum of the distant highway, the occasional siren, the footsteps of people returning home nearby, the faint sound of wind blowing over the lake.

Another siren in the distance—long-short, long-short, long-short, long-short.

It was exactly the same as when the Korean-American Grandmother had heard it for the first time forty years ago.

”Forty chapters left,” Taylor suddenly said.

”What?”

”What you said before. Forty chapters left.”

Alex thought for a moment and smiled: ”Yes. Forty chapters left.”

”Enough to write many sounds.”

”Enough.”

Taylor leaned on his shoulder, looking at the lake in the distance.

”Then write it slowly.”
